It's crazy Lovecraftian fun! On Golarion!

Liberty's Edge

So, going off of all that, I'm one of those weird cultist bread half-alien weirdos. And I hunt down and kill all of those beings myself, drive a silver stake tipped with wood (or the other way around) through their heart (which is most likely not in their chest) and then pretend im normal (which is to say the same kind of crazy as everyone else)... this sounds FUN!

Inside the cities are things that are Really Old (don't mess with them, they want to kill you), sciences and researchers (usually foreigners), foreigners, and dreamers. All of these are dangerous and invite the Mythos in. Especially foreigners (for some reason, accents = evil. Again, ew)

Plus Lovecraft is really big on that nasty nasty race mixing. Keep the anglo-saxan line pure

Yes, and for some reason, Celts are OK. So, basically, if you were a WASP, or at least came from England, you were OK. If you were from the wrong part of Europe, you could be OK, but it's best to hold you at arms lengths. And... Ya... Far less pleasant implications for anyone from any other place.

These are NOT tropes we will be using in this game, btw. I adore his fiction, but not his particular brand of crazy.

This sounds like a lot of fun! I'd like to submit Machaera Selanna, whose profile can be found here. (She's a character from a Reign of Winter campaign that ended early, bumped back down to first level, so I just had to tweak her character sheet.)

She's an elf magus (a hexcrafter), planning to dabble in various streams of magic (I've got my eye on the Sacred Geometry and Ritual Hex feats for later on) as well as firearms. I had originally envisioned her as vaguely like what Dr. Livingstone might have been like as a magical elven heiress rather than a colonial missionary, her wanderings accounting for how she might eventually acquire an exotic familiar, or an Alkenstar pistol, or familiarity with any number of odd magical practices. Honestly, even without the memory loss, I had imagined her as getting around enough that she could pop up just about anywhere, having seen who knows what. (Though I wasn't thinking cosmic horror at the time.) :)

On that note:

Dragonofashandflame wrote:

A Lovecraftian elf would probably eat your face off or be some sort of bizarre creature that fed off your dreams. ...

So to sum up: anything unusual or not at all "normal" is bad; dreams are a necessary evil, and you really need to be careful with them; nature is just another word for "place where everything wants to kill you"; poor peasant farmers are dangerous inbred cultists who want to eat you or sacrifice you to an unspeakable horror or turn you into a horrible monster (or all three); and the everything buried (books, dead bodies, even gems and metals) should stay buried.

Soooo, an elf witch who loves the woods and wants to read all the books... Machaera might be a bit off, but she doesn't eat people. She's quite lovely once you get to know her. Reallyreally. ;) (I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.)

We could always go for a fun Pulp game. Luchadores that suplex Deep Ones and trencharmored coated Investigators who duel wield guns. ;)

I actually have issues with bombs and guns in my fantasy, so you'll never see me play an alchemist(unless its an archetype that trades out bombs), or a gunslinger. All those loud noises, you know. Again, fireballs are perfectly fine, so I might be biased.

Ran a game with a friend who played a mermaid alchemist. Her take on the whole thing: What if Ariel had sided with Ursula? She was wonderful! The bombs were bizarre concoctions from throngs she gathered in their travels (- lot of it was guano) but it worked surprisingly well.

Well I hope I get a slot. It will be fun to try out a vigilante in a game of sanity-stakes intrigue...

And he has the 'walks the line of dabbling in dark powers' flavor that is the warlock archetype. I've never gotten the chance to do the memory loss angle before. This is exciting!

Description:
Dvarin is a young man who appears about nineteen years with dark brown hair, skin slightly paler and grayer than normal, and gray eyes. He is of fairly slender build, with generally rather soft features, cruelly arching eyebrows and intense eyes. His eyeteeth and ears are both slightly pointed though not enough to draw too much notice. His clothing, while clearly expensive and fashionable at one point, is beginning to fray at the edges and the color is fading fast; he looks increasingly like a vagabond, a fact he does not entirely disapprove of.

Fluff:
Dvarin was dreaming, he was sure of that, dreaming of someplace further from home than he had ever been--but where was it? And where, for that matter, was his home? He couldn’t remember that either, it seemed. Maybe this place was his home--but if it was, what had happened to it? He thought perhaps he would linger at the fountain, try to guess at what had emptied this city--the thought of the minstrels who played here, who he remembered playing here filled him with melancholy and with a strange kind of hunger too--when he saw the fog, pulsing with the yellow of sickness, something stalking within it and before he can react he found himself running, his feet compelled to run through

“Hello?” he called out in the darkness as he raced between the streets. This had to be a dream, his feet running of their own accord, his body acting as the dream logic compelled him but everything seemed so real, the sound of footsteps trailing behind him, the crumbling city beneath his feet, the gray of his skin--why was his skin gray, he wondered? Had he died in this dream? Was he dead already? He yearned to stop, if only for a moment, with each wonder and monument he passed--this was a city built on secrets, wherever it was, whatever it was, but each time he slowed his steps the fog drew closer, hungering after him, heightening the strange pangs of hunger he felt in his stomach, and he quickened his pace again.

At last he reached a split in the street--one path leading up and another down. He could still escape. There was still time. He just had to run. But he didn’t.

Either I am dreaming or I am trapped here. Whichever it is, I will run no more, he thought, turning back to face the fog and let it overtake him.

I personally like it, at least for stuff like this. Honestly, swords, sorcery and heavy armor feels a little out of place for me in this sort of story.

But then again, I agree that pathfinder generally and golarion specifically has become steadily more schizophrenic as time goes on.

You could easily divide it into several games, one with ninja, monks, samurai and kineticists (maybe witches?), one with gunslingers, alchemists, investigators and occult classes, and one with all the standard high fantasy things.

I've always had the idea of running a game where the only classes allowed would be martial or occult (or occult archetypes). Maybe even not allowing kineticists as they are more wuxia than occult. Would completely change the feeling and tone. Especially if you plop them down in a historical themed setting.

Of course I should actually GM something first...

Hello DM.

I would like to submit Theo here, although I need to make adjustments.

Thank you.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of my favorite books!!!

Nice crunch, remember to add your prompt response! It's your very first action in game, should you be accepted

Thank you. I have always wanted to do a mad hatter type character and this seems like the right AP for it...lol.

I shall get my prompt response done asap.

Prompt:
The city is ancient, older, even, than storied Absalom, the City at the Center of the World. The entryways to stately mansion of crumbling black and silver brick open, unseeingly to the cobbled street. Above, black stars sparkle in a viridian sky, and the whole city is bathed in the harsh light of a vermillion moon. Not a soul stirs on the streets in this nameless city, save for you. You know not how you have come to this fabled unnamed city, but this strange city is hauntingly familiar. At the fountain, long gone dry and dusty, in the plaza around the bend, you sat and listened to minstrels sing ancient tales of far-off Lomar and Oriab. Your feet slow, drawn by the haunting remembrance, not quite a memory, but far more than a vague feeling. You can still hear the lyres play, the bard’s songs. But, then, unease fills your heart, and you look back.
Behind you is a wall of sickly yellow fog, tumbling through the street’s canyon of crumbling, leaning manses like some jaundiced flash flood. Ahead, the oddly familiar avenue, curving to the left and right. Behind, from the silent swell of mist, emanates the sound of footsteps--slow and staggered, but somehow keeping pace with the careening, hungry wave. And always just behind. Ever out of reach, but close, and drawing closer. Within, you can discern faint shapes. The fog swirls and billows in opposite ways, as though stirred by the beats of wings and or animals deep within. And always, there are the footsteps.
Still you run, fleeing the plaza of your half-remembered songs, across a courtyard of pillars top by cerulean orbs that fold in on themselves in an alien geometry. Your flight takes you down another avenue, and the battered buildings appear almost ruinous, they slump over the path, nearly blotting out the bruised twilight sky. Again, the grimy cobblestone street splits. This time, one route curves uphill, while the other recklessly descends. Behind, the yellow fog and the relentless sound of pursuit grow closer…

The slow, tortuous bead of perspiration sluggishly slides down his scruffy cheek; easily eager to erase any sense of his self-confidence. Lifting his top hat, he swipes his coated arm across his temples. A small victory. Replacing the hat, he leans warily upon a broken, ruined fence. His ragged breath matching his appearance, the lone gentleman warily watches as the murderous fog creeps ever closer. Glancing furtively at the indifferent sky, his faded blue eyes reflect a hopelessness that his body begins to agree with. The tapping, tapping, tapping of hidden feet impress upon him a resolution to this ordeal. The choices for survival having been lessen by the moment, he peers intently at the two roads before him.
Alas, it seems they finally found me!, he whispers to the fog. With a sudden change of resolve, the lanky gentleman doffs his top hat at the ghastly fog.
Not yet, not yet!, he defiantly announces, as he stumbles up the hill....

Ok. I can go longer if you want. That was fun!

So themed classes can be fun. I'm in an iron gods game with only "savage" classes. It's a hoot.

As Amnesia means he does not remember his name, I present The Oldest One. Everything should be in the profile.

Hi. This looks interesting so I would like to show my interest and bring forth an interesting idea. Cause im interested :)

Anyways! I had the idea of creating a terrified little halfling who is all alone in the big, scary world. sniff :,(
So a Halfling with the Craven racial ability and then to really play up the fear and sanity rules. Honestly I realy have no idea how quickly he might devolve into an unplayable gibbering wreak mostly because I havent read through the system yet, but we can cross that bridge when we get there. (or if he gets unexpecetedly lucky with his paranoia keeping him the most sane of the group :p)
Is there a specific gibbering horror, or a generic type of monster that I can be especially afraid of? I am thinking of having it promise to eat me, and thinking of using the Oracle as my class (yay curses!) and its power coming from that creature.
Something like; It promised with a malviolent smile that it WILL eat me someday but first it wanted to wait while I ripened, and it laughed hidiously while I fled in terror. When I woke, I could not remember for the life of me, and indeed my life depends on it, what it was but I remember with crystal clarity that laugh and I trust whole hardedly that it will keep its promises. I must flee. It might catch up with me at any moment. I must flee! Faster! I must flee, Imustflee Imustflee Imustflee Imustflee.. mustflee... flee...
:p

I also had another idea, this time a human caveman(ish) using the True Primitive Barbarian archtype with this snipet in mind;
Isolated and xenophobic tribes that dwell in areas untouched by civilization often see anything from cities and organized settlements as strange, dangerous, and decadent.
And using the amnesia aspect to gloss over how he came to be at our location, be it slavery or exotic pet or teleportation or something.
The basic premise is that of how a prehistoric man would react differently then that of a modern man. Where we would find something very unsettling because of our knowledge of the world around us, he would simply brush it off as "something strange, just like the rest of the big, strange world out there," yet sometimes even basic, everyday things in life are a wonder and a danger for him. Like a toaster :P (there are still many things that man fears regardless of the years apart, and it would allow me some fun leeway on passed/failed fear and wisdom checks) Plus I intend to make him very superstisious and distrusting of many things >:D
I figure he will fight with a stone spear, or three, wear hide armor, high Will save and distrusting of magic (so he will survive the sanity strain better then most), speak giberish half the time (and have common as a learnt language via linguistics. Maybe with a very brittish accent gained via magic :p)
Thinking of Power Attack and Iron Will for his feats, Giant Ancestry and Tribalistic racial traits to represent his hulking, brutish nature and tribal background (even though they probably wont be that useful).

Well thats my starting point, thoughts?

Wow both ideas sound really interesting!! Go for which one you like (or both). As for the eater thing, it could be a vague voice in the dark. A ghoul.

He turned and ran. Great as his strength was, there was no hope against that eldritch might. As the breath fled from his lungs in ragged gasps, he stumbled on the cobblestones. Falling to his knees, he glimpsed his visage in the puddle.
That horrid face. That jutting brow, sallow skin, and monstrous protruding canines. The feeling deep in his breast that even more bestial aspects lurked within, ready to break out. What vile sorcery had a progenitor worked, to befoul his bloodline in such a manner? To what fell demon had he been desecrated? Or something beyond a demon, beyond our understanding?
And it called to him. The dark whisper within. "Free me," it said. "Free me, and we shall smite those who pursue you. We shall rule this realm."
And he spoke back to the whisper, and he said --

Half-orc aberrant bloodrager, the monster kept in chains in the asylum. I have an idea about his ancestry that should fit well with the AP's themes, I think, but suffice to say neither "the rare happy union" nor the most common origin as laid out in Orcs of Golarion.

Question for Dragon: Once recruitment is closed and you've made your party selection, whether I make it into the game or not, would you be willing to send me a PM or something with your take on the build? I'm always interested in knowing what makes the characters I post make (or not make) the cut so that I can apply it to subsequent PbP applications.

description:
Description: Connie stands only a hair above five feet, joking that she is simply due for a growth spurt (despite being in her early 20’s). Her long, olive face seems ready to smile at the slightest chance, and she flicks a bracelet of silver coins around her wrist while she walks. Her hair sticks out messily from under cap she rarely removes; a long jacket completes her usual attire, hiding her from the cold, as well as the baton from eyes that would see her merely as prey.

Opening Scene:
Opening Scene Reaction: Whoever was following Connie, she was sure she hadn’t lifted anything from them. At least, that’s what kept repeating in her head as she slowly made her way through the freakish city. As far as reassuring thoughts went, this was far from the top, she was sure of it. Something in the back of her head told her it may not be the wisest thing to stick around and explain it to her stalkers - not that the broken city was any more inviting. Whatever had happened here, it’d left it a frightful, mad place, full of half-forgotten ghosts, and symbols that pained her to stare too long at. Her shadow flickered about her feet as she strode just far enough in from the mist that she could break sight from it, only for it, and the footsteps, to stay hot on her heels. A sturdy iron baton hung at her side, and for a moment - just a moment - she envisioned meeting her pursuers head-on. The palpable feeling of dread that clutched at her bones when she stood her ground convinced her that was a particularly poor decision, sending her flying through the streets. Of course, no matter how many twists and turns she took, the mist and its inhabitants were always right behind her, all the way to a split in the path. Without hesitation, she charged uphill, something almost tugging at her limbs, urging her further and further forward...

I thought I replied to this but I think I only did it in my head.

Yes, I'll give feed back at the end if you want.

Settled on a concept. I'll be doing a halfling enigma mesmerist built around sneaking and debuffing, but also with a melee sideline and face skills.

The formless adept psychic was too MAD to make into a good sneak and still have be good at anything else.

Kaspin is my submission for this AP; for now, he's an Inspired Blade, Noble Fencer Swashbuckler. I foresee him going down the path of a Cavalier later in his adventuring career, however!

Kaspin is Driven by Guilt, and may be a little afraid of what's waiting in the dark.

Intro Response:
Kaspin was uncertain which was worse - the dreary emptiness of the city that was once so full of life, the terrifying fullness of the putrescent cloud that almost boiled after him, or the dark shadows that seemed to fill every yawning nook, stone buildings like teeth waiting to close at any moment.

Everything was wrong, of that, Kaspin was certain. Not just the city, which... somehow felt like home. Not only the sky, the architecture, the streets. No, something else was deeply wrong. Maybe Kaspin was wrong in some way. Down... down was madness. Down would lead to darkness, and the sandstorm that traveled in his wake would turn any safety he found below into his burial chamber. Only up could lead to safety, only up to freedom. Or at least better odds.

Love your GM style... Hellknight game
I just joined a SA game... but tempted to apply here too

scene response:

Cecillia ran, a sense of unearth fear resonating through her body, the yellow fog seemingly pursuing her as she moved. higher, I must get higher she whimpered, but the path seemed to stretch forever, and her feet were shoed in lead, her footsteps slow and heavy.
Suddenly, moving beside her was a transparent figure, a woman who looked exactly like her, except her hair was blond and tied back, Cecellia’s was silver, and with two piecing ice blue eyes. So unlike hers, one of which was emerald, and the other sapphire. Moving easily, the spirit kept pace with Cecellia’s desperate efforts. By the gods, you are slowing. If you don’t hurry I will catch you.
Cecillia staggers at the unexpected voice and trips. The cobble stones on the ruined walkway seem to tear at her flesh. She rolls over and stares at the apparition. In the fog, still approaching, a horrifying howl echoes, an echo from a hunt beyond human thought, not exactly heard but felt over her skin. She shuddered and tried to stand, falling again.
Oh you seem to have stopped the ghost said, and then turned, cupping its hands to its face. SHE’S OVER HERE! she called out to whatever horror was chasing Cecillia.
With that fear gave Cecillia the strength to get up. don’t do that, it will hear. Who are you? Why are you tormenting me? she said as she started staggering along the road. The shadows of the buildings seemed to clutch at her as she moved, and a noise of footsteps echoed behind her, if the feet in question had claws.
Why? You know why. Or don’t you? Oh this is grand, the thief doesn’t remember the theft, the murderess the kill. The apparition laughs with gay abandon, so out of place in these grim surroundings. The laughter echoed back, changed into a hideous, insane chuckle. Know that you have wronged me, stolen from me, killed me, and desecrated my memory. This here is the merest taste of the punishment I wish for you.
why? I don’t remember you.
But I remember you, dearest one. I remember you. The spirit gestures and a cobblestone dislodges, sending Cecillia tripping again with a cry. oops! Times up!
Cecillia looked back and saw it was too late, it was too late by far. She screamed as the fog washed over her, caressing her with promises of prolonged doom. A clawed had hefted her up into the air. As she came down she saw a great toothed, maw open to receive her.
Then…
She woke with a scream

I'm really excited by all these ideas cropping up! So many unique takes on the idea of what do with a character who doesn't remember anything.

Hello, I am Samnell's mesmerist.

Love your GM style... Hellknight game

I just joined a SA game... but tempted to apply here too

Loving having you in Hellknight! You're welcome to apply, but I'm not sure how much different it'll be.

Awesome. Thanks. Will get something together

Oops, forgot my alignment. It is NG

I got a response to the scene up, under background on my sheet. I think I'll add more to description/appearance though.

I also found some music that I think is quite fitting.

Wait, what? That's like, UTC-11, right?

I've got to go look on a map, I wasn't aware that there was anyone living in that timezone. Silly me. I guess you learn something new every day.

I guess? It's UTC -10. We don't have daylight savings time, which makes things weird for the already weird US (which thinks you can control time). According to Google, it's currently 4:34pm but it's 6:36am where I am. That's -10 hours. It appears we share the time zone with Alaska and a bunch of islands.

Alright updating kenderella to completed status.

Brief update, I have some flavor up concerning my character's abilities, traits, and feats. It includes her take on them (especially her concerns with how she got the abilities). It's been up for a couple of days but I figure I may also work on other things before the deadline as well.

I added a section on Kendrella's appearance.

With the more westerly Aleutians, except during DST because they go on it and you do not. You also share the zone with French Polynesia and the Cook Islands and, most importantly, Johnston Atoll.

So many great applicants. Good luck all.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have my crunch finished and responded to the scene. I plan to create an alias before I head for bed, but may not get the chance.

Appearance - Nathaniel is tall and imposing. His features are a strange amalgamation of his ancestor races: the pupil filled eyes, long limbs, and large pointed ears of an elf, the square and bearded jaw, large nose and broad shoulders of a man. His arms seem slightly longer than to match his body and one leg seems off balance with the other, giving him a slight limp as he walks. Criss-crossing scars litter his body. His expression is commonly one of deep contemplation and self-reflection and a smile is hard to come to his lips. The perceptive that look into his eyes see a deep sadness and a pity for everything around him.

Personality - While he might not remember his past a deep-seated pessimism and pity for the world and its inhabitants bubbles just beneath the surface of his solemn facade. Nathaniel is a man who loves the world and all its beings and yet knows they are doomed. He may may know that everyone and everything is doomed in the end, but he will still fight for good until the day he dies. He attempts to draw a sketch of every person and place that he comes across, a memory of them kept in his journal, even after their inevitable death.

Resolve, doubt, pity and valor are the key words at the core of Nathaniel's personality.

Fluff Response:

Nathaniel sighs wearily as the path splits before him, he runs a battered hand through tangled hair. Whatever path I take the footsteps of death and their perverse fog will follow. He looks from one path to the other, neither gives any hint of true salvation. Not a scent of memory dredges itself from his cloudy mind to help. With a sharp nod to himself he turns his back on both paths to confront what comes behind. "You take my memories and leave me only this perception of endless tragedy. I will not let you take my diginity as well!" His voice echoes through the streets as the fog propels towards him. Even if you win in the end, I will not let that end be here! He draws his worn blade in steady hands and defies the fiendish fog with a final wordless bellow.

Only *checks time* 4 hours until recruitment closes! Good luck everyone :)

Presenting Sorala for consideration, Varisian midwife/amnesiac whose past is lost to some great failure and shame. Mechanically, she's an interrogator alchemist (I figure she was using the injections/alchemy in whatever horror befell her and her village, and bombs/mutagen don't really fit the concept). At second level, the preservationist archetype comes online as well, and with the planar preservationist feat, I figure if selected it could be fun to have Sorala summon some creatures refluffed to be filled with aberrant squickiness (in terms of fluff only, not crunch).

Requested fluff, as well as some potential plot hooks, are in the alias.

Thank you for the consideration, and good luck to everyone.

Good luck!

Great submissions, good luck to everyone

Crossing toes and fingers for this one.

Sorry. Not enough time to get one in. Enjoy the game folks
