Eirik Clausen |
"We need to keep moving. We can't just let the skum sorcerer get away. We should follow."
Eirik nodded emphatically at the Inquisitor's words. Tillia's spell might have driven the creature away for now, but it would surely be gathering more forces for another attack, or setting up an ambush for them. Until and unless they could be certain the sorcerer had been driven away for good or defeated, they dared not count the level safe. He just wished the tunnel the enemy had retreated into would not lead to another such an open chamber - with his novice skills at swimming, getting close to the creature would no doubt be just as futile as it had been here, if it had plenty of room to manouver around the slow surface-dwellers.
By all means, let's chase the enemy.
Caleb Cage |
Caleb looked shaken. "I'm... I'm not sure how much use I'm going to be. My control is slipping. I could probably do one more battle, but if the blackness comes again... run..."
Tillia |
Tillia considered the situation and said, "Iiff wwee ggoo aafftteerr hhiimm II ccaann'tt kkeeeepp uupp. Ggoo kkiillll hhiimm."
Noravia Jeggare |
"Iiff wwee ggoo aafftteerr hhiimm II ccaann'tt kkeeeepp uupp. Ggoo kkiillll hhiimm."
Noravia nodded, "It's true that some of us can't move as fast being affected by its spell but we'll come as fast as we can."

She turned to Caleb and said, "I think you're stronger than you give yourself credit for. We, or at least I, won't abandon you if things go sideways."
Eirik Clausen |
Swim: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Hmm... I think it's a bit risky not to move in a tighter formation, especially with the slowest of the slow (who like Eirik just now can't really make any headway at all) are rounds away from joining in combat. But if this is how the cookie crumbles...
Unable to even call out for Caleb and Vandomir to slow down and allow the rest of them to catch up, Eirik battled against both the spell slowing his movements and the water that resisted every action he attempted. Not with much luck, again, as seemed to be the norm, he thought glumly, not even able to sigh in irritation, as he did not have the breath to spare.
So... I guess it's one 5' movement towards the secret door this round.

Question: is it possible to do a Coup de grace with coin shot? It says crossbows are okay.
I think coup de grace is done with a weapon.
Can it be done with spells?
And don't forget that there are six of those images and they are shimmering...
BTW, I'll be out all day so don't expect anything from me until later this evening. Please bot me as necessary.
Tillia |
I would think that if it is a touch range spell, you could cast it one round and hold the charge then take the following round to do a full-round action and coup de grace with it. A ranged touch spell though I would have to say that no you couldn't as you can't hold the charge.
I would also wait for the images to vanish before trying it.
Caleb Cage |
Caleb darted through the water like a black shadow. He vanished into the cave, losing himself on the murky bottom, just north of the entrance, and waited. Waited for Vandomir to strike - and the sorceror to respond!
stealth if needed: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 23
5ft up so Vandomir can get in. Readied action to interrupt sorceror's casting with MIND THRUST I!

Caleb Cage |
Sure - makes sense. Wasn't sure given coin shot gives the ability to use the coins as a weapon. Happy to wait.
Vandomir: this is your time to be a hero! Er, again!
Vandomir Jarvis |
Can you send me the file please?
If there are multiple images, and he's sleeping, I don't see why multiple coup attempts couldn't be made. If an attempt hits an image, that shouldn't wake the caster, right?

File just sent. We need to try and find another way of doing this. Can't you download from a smart phone and email it to yourself?
I would rule that the suggestion is broken if the skum sorcerer is attacked.
Let me know what you want to do and I'll move this along tomorrow.

Vandomir Jarvis |
In round 11, Vandomir will just continue swimming, I'm still slowed, but not in 12. When we get to 12/13 Vandomir will close his eyes and coup. With complete concealment it takes 2 rounds to coup, but the mirror images won't stop me.

You're still slowed bu the movement rate of the manta ray is 60'.
I'll figure out what happens and post later today.
However, you'll likely coup the grace in round 12 with just you and Caleb in the cave.
Questions or last minute changes?
I intend to recap later today.

Caleb Cage |
Uh, Mind Thrust targets the mind. Mechanically it's a save rather than a targeted attack. Didn't think that interacted with Mirror Image (if that is what it is).
Caleb Cage |
Caleb swallowed as he felt the darkness return. Rather than risk falling into the Dark again, he pushed forward through the water, surging up against the sorceror, then back as he realised his helplessness.
"Vandomir! Strike!" he urged.
5ft step forward. Hold action to Mind Thrust I if it casts again.
When the Sorceror's eyes bulged even more monstrously, Caleb read the 'tell'. 'Damn thing is going to try to cast again!'. Heedless of the danger he lashed out with his mind.

The creature wavered for a second as the darkness invaded its mind, disrupting the delicate concentration needed to rip apart reality itself.
Eirik Clausen |
Swim: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Hearing what he must take as sounds of ensuing battle further ahead, Eirik did his best to hurry onwards, using his hands and feet to drag himself along the narrow corridor, hoping he would arrive in time to help.
Keep moving, a little bit further this time around.
Vandomir Jarvis |
I don't have the file, but I gather I'm in a position to strike, and since the creature is awake, there will be no coup de grace, so my intent is to attack twice.
Vandomir had come up on the creature, and there was now nothing for it but to strike the creature down with his blade...
+1 Greatsword: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 9 - 2 = 142d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 4) + 4 = 9
+1 Greatsword: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 - 2 = 52d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 2) + 4 = 9
... but alas, his swing was not true, nor was he able to destroy any of the ghostly images dancing through the water around the skum.
Tillia |
Tillia knew that she was going to have to catch up quickly and it was then that she felt the effects of the spell wear off. She began to make her way down the passageway the others were in and tried to get as close to the sorcerer as she safely could.
swim: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
My goal is to get to 10 feet from the sorcerer if at all possible.

Tillia |
In place now to deal with this creature Tillia took the chance to cast a spell and then swam close enough to reach out and try to touch the sorcerer. Her hand was wreathed in a strange, sickly pink, energy, one she hoped to push upon the sorcerer.

Eirik Clausen |
Swim: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Lovely...
Seeing the enemy driven against a wall and already engaged in battle, Eirik decided against putting even more targets within a single spell's range and instead blocked the exit from the chamber, just in case the sorcerer had some magical means of escape up it's sleeves.
Movement is pretty much out of the picture, so might as well stay and block the exit this round, in case the enemy manages to get past Vandomir and Caleb, or tries some teleport trick.
Vandomir Jarvis |
Vandomir waited for his sluggishness to end and smilked as he neared the sleeping sorcerer. Holding his sword with two hands, he pierced the skum’s heart… only to have one of the images disappear and the sorcerer startle awake.
So that's not what I said I'd do, but obviously we'll move on from that now.
Did the creature try and cast in 238?
Vandomir stayed right with the skum sorcerer and continued hammering at the creature's defenses.
+1 Greatsword: 1d20 + 9 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 1 - 2 = 232d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 = 81d4 ⇒ 4 Splash an image?
+1 Greatsword: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 - 2 = 62d6 + 4 ⇒ (4, 4) + 4 = 121d3 ⇒ 1 Miss
Tail: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 261d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 71d3 ⇒ 3 Splash an image
When he was done, he had not connected with his opponent, but he had destroyed two of the images, leaving only the creature itself and one phantasm.

Close your eyes and take two rounds to 'coup' to me means that you start poking around, which was enough for the sorcerer to wake up, hence my description (which should have said 'smiled' and not 'smilked'). :)
Yes, the sorcerer tried to cast in Turn 238.

Vandomir Jarvis |
This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving so my posting will be quite spotty as family is visiting. Please bot Noravia as needed.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving, even if it is held in the wrong month entirely!
Caleb Cage |
Thanks for jumping the fight, it had started to drag. I think we had him, given the numbers and the counterspells.
Action 1
Caleb clutched at his head, then bent over and wrapped his arms around his middle "I'm done." he panted. "I know this spell of Hetamon's isn't going to last much longer, but at this stage you might as well give me a trident and put me with the elves. At least I can look tough."
He turned to Vandomir "I think it's on you, Vandomir. You up to keep going, with less backup? At least we know the fish-men are gone."
Action 2
"Can anyone actually read those scrawls?" Caleb asked curiously "I'd suggest we write them down, but I can't see how to use paper down here."
does Tillia identify the items?
Vandomir Jarvis |
Vandomir responds, "I don't think going on is wise. I propose we fall back and rest, but that we camp with the elves down here while maybe one of our teams rounds up decent arms and armor for them."
Tillia |
Sorry, been busy with wedding rehearsal yesterday and my best friends wedding today. I'll get something up in the morning.
Eirik Clausen |
Vandomir responds, "I don't think going on is wise. I propose we fall back and rest, but that we camp with the elves down here while maybe one of our teams rounds up decent arms and armor for them."
Eirik shrugged his shoulder in answer. He was ready continue, but that readiness had come with the cost of other people's spells and prayers. One had to wonder just how many different groups of powerful individuals there could be in these flooded cellars, but just in case there was one more to be found, perhaps taking a moment to rest wouldn't be uncalled for.
Tillia |
Action 1
With the death of the skum Tillia felt enormous relief. She'd begun to fear they couldn't handle the thing but it's death proved that they could. The discussion then began about whether to push on or not and Tillia had to emphatically agree with the group consensus, "No! Going any further would be foolish and courting disaster. I think the three of you are quite correct in that assessment. If the elves are willing to wait one more day then great, they could be very helpful in clearing out the skum threat in this place, if they aren't then we'll just have to do without."
Action 2
As they rifled through what they could find there were several items of interest. Most of them were readily identifiable and the rod in particular was going to be quite useful so she decided to simply ask, "Would you all mind if I kept hold of the rod? It will extend the duration of some of my spells to a point where re-casting them won't likely be needed. There is even one spell I can use it with that will benefit us all with just the one casting and it will now last long enough that it will be well worth having down here."
The mural was interesting as well, though she couldn't understand what it said. She knew that she'd need to take care of that issue, there was a spell for that and she resolved to track a copy down so she could add it to her repertoire.

Action 2
"Can anyone actually read those scrawls?" Caleb asked curiously "I'd suggest we write them down, but I can't see how to use paper down here."
One the elves, the girl who seemed to be in charge, neared the carvings. "These are obviously fresh. And while I am no expert of the tainted language, I can make out some words here and there."
She paused for a moment while making gestures with her face as if that would help her decipher the writing on the wall.
"There's mention of a 'Menotheguro' with awe and fear. They pray to this ... thing. They also talk about the 'Silver...Hawks' and how their actions 'change things'. The only other thing worth of note is some sort of ancient guardian of this place and how they made a 'promise'."
She quickly corrected herself, "No, not a promise. They made a pact with the guardian."

OK, it looks like you will retreat, lick your wounds, and come back the next day. What will you do with the elves. Let them leave. Ask them to wait. Ask them to explore.
I'd like to know what the elves do so you can find out (or not) in the morning when you come back.

I'm back from my two days filled with family and turkey :)
Noravia agreed with the others that it would be best to regroup and reacquire resources before continuing. She felt even more strongly once some of the scribbles had been translated.

She quickly corrected herself, "No, not a promise. They made a pact with the guardian."
"Wait, Silver Hawks? Do you think that's a reference to us?"

Noravia pondered the mention of a guardian. "Does anyone else think that this guardian may have something to do with these levels having been dry at some time? If there's an ancient guardian of the Lucky Bones then maybe it was capable of either keeping this area dry or flooding it."
tag ?
"Does it mention what kind of guardian?"
tag Aquatic Elf
I think we should ask the elves to explore as long as they don't endanger themselves. It would speed up the process moving forward tomorrow if we know kind of what to expect. They'd need to be stealthy and not engage.
Fabian Benavente |
"Does it mention what kind of guardian?"[/ooc]
The elf looked at the carvings once more, "The pact is more like a contract it seems and it's been made by this 'Menotheguro' and the guardian. The guardian is a... water-death devil."
She shrugged and apologized for her lack of translation skills.

I will leave the elves doing 'safe scouting' and have you guys come back the next day and continue your exploration.
I intend to recap later today.
