Totally understandable

I figured it was something like that - all cool. In retrospect a reason to break stealth would be good.

@Tillia: Alinza (along with a few other protesters) is being 'detained' by a few thugs and dottari.

Oh, then Caleb's second action might need to be changed. Do we need to break them out - in which case, I guess where are they - or does this mean we need to keep all the dottari busy enough that they leave (ie win the fight)?

If the latter, Caleb will keep killing I guess.

I can't tell you what to do. :) I can only describe what's going on and hint at what might happen.

Put yourself in your PC's position. There's only a few of you that remain fighting when everyone else has mostly fled (a few have been detained). Remember that the detained have not been 'hurt' but only enough force was used to 'capture' them.

You seem to have managed to piss off the 'big dog' and somebody is 'taking notes'.

Ah - I see.
Okay - are the squares still full of crowds, or have they cleared? I'd assumed cleared.
Sorry if I'm a bit out of it, I've been home sick. I keep making silly mistakes.

So needs to say
"We have to get to cover! Now! THRUNE doesn't do things by half!"

And in which case, if Tillia is reluctant to go, Action 2 is:

"Is she your partner?" he pauses, obviously thinking, then sighs "You working girls... Alright. We should mob up with that hard-ass."

Accompany Tillia (presumably towards where Alinza is being held - although he'll try to get them to meet up with at least one other fighter first). I'm assuming we'll be in range of a dottari at some point. If it is a thug he'll just use Daze.

Caleb raised his finger to his lips and shushed the dottari.
damage: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 2) = 18 will dc 16

She continued towards them for a step or two, momentum moving her on. Then she fell face forward onto the cobbles, making no effort to protect herself. The 'thu-THUD' when she hit was painful to hear.

Female Human Warpriest/4

In case I forget later, even if she has to flee in a hurry, Rowan will take one of the Chelish arm bands that marks them as part of their faction off one of the fallen thugs.

I think we only have one action this round. the re-cap only asks for one anyway. I'm assuming something happens on the next round that has caused the change.

Might as well add third option for 4th round: assuming no enemy IS within charge range, Eirik will be most eager to encourage his fellow protesters to vacate the premises posthaste ;^)

Semantics and poor communications. :(

I want actions for Rounds 3 and 4 so 'two' actions.

If something 'significant' happens at the end of round 3 or beginning of round 4, then we'll void any intended actions for round 4. I will then present this new 'significant situation' and ask you again for actions for Round 4, which may the same action you had posted before (in that case, just cut and paste it).

Clearer?

Occurs regardless of whether her spell or request of the enthralled works.

Tillia looked on hopelessly at Alinza, the woman now in custody of the Thrune guards. I can only hope that they won't harm a priestess of Shelyn, most won't risk such a thing. I'm sorry Alinza, I'll find a way to help you. With that done Tillia quickly began to retreat from the area, trying her best to get away from the guards.

Full withdraw towards the nearest exit from the area directly behind me in relation to the opera house. AKA "Leaders dead, RUN AWAY!"

Action 1 , Round 2

Kaldar laughed a huge booming laugh as the poorly armed thug turned tail and ran away. Turning into a roaring, angry giant usually worked, although his own fear had seldom let him test it in public. His laugh died as he saw a fully armed and powerful guard rush towards him. Feeling a bit clumsy, Kaldar turns towards the man and attacks, with full fury, yelling out anti-Chelish phrases.

Power Attack with Morning Star on Guard.

Morning Star Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2) + 3 = 9 +2 for Power Attack and plus one for ‘Axe to Grind’

Round 2

Roaring with rage at missing his target, Kaldar smashes down again with his morning star. He is so caught up in his fury (finally released after years of hiding) he ignores his own safety and attacks with pure brute force, his yells echoing across the plaza.

Morning Star Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 2) + 3 = 10 +2 for Power Attack and plus one for ‘Axe to Grind’

His weapon hits true, ringing the guards head like a bell. Joy of a giant fills the square.

Turn 004 – Action 1

Attack Roll:

Greatsword: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 2 = 22
Greatsword Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 + 2 = 9

”I’m glad I didn’t wear any of my best clothes today,” thought Vandomir as he noticed the blood from the two downed thugs all over his pants legs, and the spray on his arms. A quick glance towards the attractive girl showed a dottari had moved up to accost her, ”well, I’ve got one to handle myself, so she will need to survive on her own for a few.”

Vandomir swung the greatsword around in an arc, connecting solidly with the she-guard that had come up to threaten him.

If the dottari drops: Watching the life begin to ebb from the eyes and the veins of his opponent, Vandomir again cried out in the direction of the young girl, ”get out of here you fool, this is no place for tarts and trollops!”

If the dottari didn’t drop: Surprised that his opponent was still fighting, Vandomir kept up his guard, unable to spare a glance at his surroundings.

Turn 004 – Action 2

Attack Roll:

Greatsword: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 2 = 22
Greatsword Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (6, 3) + 3 + 2 = 14

If his action 1 opponent is still up: "Still game are you," questioned Vandomir as his sword lashed out cutting through armor, sinew and bone.

If his action 1 opponent is now down: Watching the life begin to ebb from the eyes and the veins of his opponent, Vandomir again cried out in the direction of the young girl, ”get out of here you fool, this is no place for tarts and trollops!”

If his action 1 opponent is STILL up: Vandomir could not help but start thinking he might be water a bit above his head with this opponent.

If his action 1 opponent is down, and there is still a bad guy on Tillia: Weaving through the crowd, Vandomir came up on his next opponent, "Hey! I'm the threat, not her," challenged Vandomir, unwilling to strike the guard from behind. As the guard turned to face him, Vandomir's sword lashed out cutting through armor, sinew and bone.

If the dottari didn’t drop: Surprised that his opponent was still fighting, Vandomir kept up his guard, unable to spare a glance at his surroundings.

If the dottari did drop: As his opponent's body and arms clattered to the ground, Vandomir nodded his head curtly to Tillia, "shall we away from here?"

Some of you guys aren't rolling the perception check which is a shame because I wanted to read about your reactions should you make it.

Maybe I'll roll those types of checks at the end of the turn recap and let you know what you perceive or not.

Thoughts?

For this turn though...

Perception Kaldar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17, fail
Perception Vandomir: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14, fail

Thanks for letting us know. I think there were two more potential absences.

While we can't wait for everyone, we will wait until at least 4 of the 6 players post and bot the 'other two'.

Caleb wrote:
The moment the guard collapsed Caleb flashed out, grabbing at Tillia's hand. "We have to go!" he shouted over the noise.

’That man has the right idea,’ Eirik thought as his opponent finally went down. And a tough one he had been – Eirik had thought he would make short work of the thug, but had been proven wrong and got the bruises to prove it. At least the thug, just like Eirik, had only intended to knock his opponent out, not strike to kill.

He opened his mouth to urge the others to take the yellow-coated man’s advice more dottari burst out of the doors... followed by some hell-spawned beast in leash. ’Oh, this is just…’ Eirik thought glumly, then shut his mouth, ignored his aching ribs and sprinted away at best speed, following the example of the man who had shouted earlier. If it hadn’t been clear enough that staying put would just lead to one being arrested, getting eaten had just been added to the mix of dangers.

Action 6

Risking a glance behind him, Eirik was pleasantly surprised that the hell-beast was *not* right at his heels. It was nowhere in sight, as if happened. Nor were the guards who Eirik had assumed would be following the hound closely, to pick up the pieces intact enough to be arrested and prosecuted, as it were.

”Hold on,” he wheezed at the people he had fled the park with. ”We got away.” He thought, but his sides were heaving too hard for him to squeeze out more words just now. Running with very recently bruised ribs. Not fun. But better than becoming a slight snack or a chew-toy for the beast.

”Well,”*wheeze* ”That went well,” Eirik said once he got his breathing under control. His robe’s hood had caught the wind at some point of their heedless escape. He made a half-hearted attempt at pulling it down again but decided against it – if any of these people were of a mind to tell tales to the authorities, they had seen enough to recognize him already.

And off I go. Don’t expect any long posts from me for the next 72 hours. Quick replies I should manage just fine.

Just for interest’s sake… where did we run to? Where, approximately, we are?

Slight suggestion… that enemy status table on the Google doc breaks slightly… enemy name on the end of one page, the rest of the info on the following one. Might want to insert a page break there somewhere ;^)

Turn 005
Action 1

Tillia didn't resist Caleb's efforts to get her to safety, not after her last chance to save Alinza failed. She realized they had fled just in time when the beast appeared from inside which caused Tillia to pale and run even faster. Her lack of physical training, and her dress twisting about her ankles caused Tillia to stumble every so often, but fortunately for her the stranger's hand helped keep her up and running.

Action 2

After running for a minute or so, the only thing that stopped her was her lack of breath. Tillia stopped and bent over, her hands braced against her knees as she panted heavily. Her hand had slipped out of Caleb's, not even realizing he was there. After a moment of this she began to cry, it started quietly but quickly became wracking sobs of horror and loss over the recent events.

I'll likely expand my Action 2 once I know what Caleb does and such, that, and I am running out of time to type right now.

'My' inclination would be straight south trough the park but I suppose that you could be anywhere. Look at the map and districts and someone let me know. With regards to distance, there are some slower (armored) people so after a minute (10 rounds) of running you are about 600' away.

I'll try to remember the page break issue for future posting.

I was thinking Caleb would run NE - run to the path along the lake. If this thing throws fire, a nearby water source could be a godsend.

Plus, we can then run through T6, R6 and R7:
T6 - the temple of shelyn (which might slow them down, and we might be able to seek refuge).
then we're into the redroof district, with its lower streets. If there has been some rain we might at least get puddles which might help with tracks and fire beasts.
We're also into the Tiefling area. That sounds like a place the Dottari might hesitate to go. Plus, I sorta figured Caleb might have a squat there, though I hadn't checked that in advance.
If that sounds okay, I'll work it into my post. Sadly that'll have to be in the morning (or later tonight if I get another bout of insomnia).
If people have other ideas I'm very happy to hear them - not trying to push anything on people.

Edit: I do need to say thank you to Fabian for so nicely giving the downlow on the lowdown parts of the city :)

Turn 005 - Action 1

Caleb knew exactly what he was looking at when the pony sized flame-dog slavered out of the door. THRUNE.

The true face. Not the semi-civilised, arrogant sneer they showed in public. The True Face of THRUNE that would burn down a city rather than let anyone cross them. Brutal. Sadistic. Corruptive.

He glanced around, weighing options in the split-second manner he'd been trained to do.

Somehow he seemed to be the only one not injured or captured, presumably because he'd hid. When he looked to his right he noticed one other man uninjured. He'd missed it at first, as the man was covered in blood, but none of it was his.

A moment for a closer glimpse revealed the man looked upper class - a good haircut and a better shave, good quality clothes though not some flashy embroidered noble's gear, and most tellingly the way he looked about himself as though he were on some higher level even though the ground was flat. The man had obviously been backing away before the fight broke out - which said he had good instincts - then been attacked and just killed everyone who came up against him. Two dottari down, a thug literally cut in half, and the man hadn't taken a hit.

Now he was closer he could see the girl he was dragging wasn't wearing the colours. What he'd taken for lacquered yellow bands in her black hair was some sort of white gold reflecting the light strangely. Still, she'd taken a hit, and everyone who'd been in this crowd was an ally, if not an actual friend.

An Ulfen giant of a man in an outfit that suggested he'd never heard of colour was still trying to fight unarmed - though the fact he was still standing suggested he'd make a good bouncer... In fact from the number of the thugs he'd taken down Caleb reckoned he could find the man a job. The thug Caleb ran from had gone after this guy, so he sort of owed him.

The actual giant, nine feet tall, had been too clear a target. Obviously passionate about hating THRUNE from the way he'd been yelling. Impressive as hell, especially when he grew. But he'd been too obvious a target. Still, magic and combat suggested a Divine, and that meant he might be able to heal everyone.

The last fighter was a serious looking girl who'd just dropped a thug to the ground.

His instincts said he should look after them. It was hard to tell if it was his own mind, the Blessings or the Curse - but either way he always listened to his feelings.

A map of the city flashed through his mind. He'd run from dogs and dottari enough in his life. Enough to know every second before the slipped off the leash was worth thirty later.

"RUN!" he screamed, with a voice trained to project to the back of a noisy pub. "THIS WAY!"

He half-ran, half-dragged the young woman south and east, down towards the lake. Put the trees between them and the dottari. Break line of sight. The water'd let them hide their tracks if they needed to. Curve south, as if running towards the rust gate.

"Lose the height!" he directed the enormous man, then cut through the gap between the houses of the two Joranson brothers. As was normal the gap between their houses was a shared yard where the twenty Joranson kids had left their toys and half-completed projects to block the way.

working on the theory that at 40ft Caleb is nearly twice as fast as the slowest member of the party

Through the strip of trees, straight toward the temple of Shelyn. Leave a good strong track... then down the road an into the alley. Caleb took a moment to pull down the display of flowers Adelia the florist outside the temple, scattering roses and sunflowers over the last part of their trek. See a dog - even that one - track them through that much scent.
Don't want to offend Shelyn - or Adelia, if I can help it he thought, flipping an entire gold to the furious florist and shrugging "good cause?"
While I don't know how much flowers cost, A gold is about the profit most merchants make in a whole day.

Then quickly back after the others, who were still running down the alley. They were heading into redroof now. It'd been raining and the roads here were never kept as well. The cobbles were slick, muddy - well you couldn't really call it water anymore - something covering the road and clogging the tiny gutters. The dottari didn't like coming into redroof, and a dog'd have trouble with scent in this muck. As he ran he changed his coat to yellow and pulled up his hood. Messed with the colours of the others as best he could as well.

Down towards the Cloven Hoof Society hostel, then east, into the devil's nursery. Old buildings no-one wanted to live in anymore, but some didn't have a choice. Through the shacks and lean-tos, past tieflings who very definitely wouldn't have seen a man in yellow come through if dottari came asking.

I guess in a minute we'd do 800 to 1600 ft? If we're okay to a bit longer, I'd like to take us to Caleb's home, before he has a chance to think it through. If not, Fabian, can you cut the next bit

Away from the shacks and into the old 'abandoned' buildings where families of tieflings tried to form a community. Up a ladder onto a second story building that'd once been a tannery. Then across a plank bridge - "Watch your step" to another brick building where a low-cieling'd shack apparently built out of compressed trash mortared with some sort of wood paste had been built into the gabled roof.

There he stops.

Turn 005 - Action 2
Caleb turned, panting for breath. He'd run faster, and longer when he had to, but the energy fear and hate had left him was guttering. He blinked, seeing the others, and proceeded to let out a long string of truly impressive swearing in three languages that ended in "THRUNE!"

A wasp wandered by, apparently unconcerned by the group, and Caleb sighed.

"Well? Yeah. Realllllll well. THRUNE provoked us, we responded, he shut is down."

He then proceeded to let loose another stream of invective.

"What did you expect? That he apologised and went away, after the very first protest? After showing how much he cared about the people's feelings by issuing those proclamations of his?" Eirik grunted, probing his injured ribs gingerly. "I'm more surprised he hadn't prepared better, hadn't got his troops in place to make arrests if and when given excuse by the protesters' actions... Our actions."

Perhaps the Paracount was an idiot after all, Eirik mused. That would just make him even more unpredictable.

"We can't stay here, though. Too close. We need to vanish." Eirik went on, looking around to figure out where they were - as they ran, "away" had been the only direction he had cared about.

"We are going to need to lie low for a while, though.">

"Agreed," Eirik said, casting a look at their surroundings. A charge of guards, weapons drawn, into these parts might not be a smart move. But was the Paracount thinking straight? He was said to have a mercurial temper, and his recent behaviour certainly supported the rumor.

"A change of clothes wouldn't go amiss either," he said, taking his own advice to get out of his robe. He wrapped his sash around the bundle of dark fabric, satisfied it might from a distance be seen as a shoulder back. "I don't know if those people saw our faces, but if someone out there had the brains of a lark, that someone was taking of notes about the people who stood out the most. And I'm afraid we did."

Indeed, I might be wise to requisition for a cleric's white robes and stick to them for a spell, the first thing he got back to the temple, Eirik mused. He really did think his hood had hid his face, but the dark robe and the white sash he preferred might be best to keep shelved for a time. Just in case.

You're right we do need to hide, and if you have a safe place then so be it." Tillia was obviously still upset but she was beginning to get control of herself. "I guess it's good that I have few possessions to keep track of. I have everything I would need, do the rest of you need to retrieve anything beforehand?" Tillia sent a feeling to Salina to come to her and a few moments later the little thrush came winging in to land on her outstretched finger. You all ran for about 1 minute, figured out that you aren't being chased, and are 'chatting' about what to do next.

I want you and Kaldar to 'weigh' in and then I'll present another situation for you all to roleplay.

Other questions?

With no more enemies near him, other than the ones he had bloodied, and the attractive woman being dragged out of harm's way by one of the other commoners, Vandomir's decision came quickly, "enemy of my enemy and all that." He gestured to the others, one of them was huge, and most all were grievously injured, "lead on, I shall cover your movement." As the group moved, Vandomir sized them up, Humans, a couple with magic in their veins, some attractive females, a bossy male, but at least that one could make decisions on the fly. "How did this happen," he wondered? "I didn't come to protest, I was just there for business, but those thugs didn't care, no, nor the dottari. They'd have broken my skull if I had let them. Well, they chose the terms, and I met them with steel."

As they moved through the back ways of the city, Vandomir was impressed with the man in the lead. "Excellent escape route. Not quite what I'd have chosen, but very good." At each opportunity, Vandomir made quick adjustments behind himself, to disguise their tracks and throw off their pursuers, except for the fire dog. "That thing will catch us if it tries, hopefully they are too busy to chase us."

Finally the group came to a halt. Vandomir's senses felt the city. It was awakening in a way he'd never known. It was a rush like the first love of summer, and he drank it in.

"Hide? Lie low? Thrune shut down? Do you idiots know what you've done? You've provoked the government. Before it was all talk and edicts about mint and tea, but you've, we've taken up arms against them!" He looked at them, "you act like you've won some great victory, look at yourselves, bloodied and senseless. Be reasonable, you can't fight city hall! Best you all disperse and go back to wherever you came from, and act like you never came to the Park today!"

During his speech, Vandomir was making every effort to scrape and rub his clothes, to try and blend the red blood in with brown dirt to disguise what it really is.

Humans? Are we really all full blooded humans? I cannot begin to recall the last time I was in a party with 6 humans, probably back in the Red Box when "Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, Thief" made a party.

Human Cleric/2

I said to bot me please. Kaldar ran away. I won't be able to post today. It is a holiday and my family unexpectedly visited. Don't hold things up for me. I'll post my reaction, don't worry GM!

Ok, I misunderstood your Saturday post. I thought you would be able to post before Monday.

No worries, I'll recap later today and move this along.

Turn 6

Action 1

Vandomir kept scanning the way they had come, concerned that they might have been followed. The excitement of the last couple minutes had overrode his naturally calm demeanor, but it was quickly re asserting itself. "Several of you are seriously injured. You're lucky to not be dead like those we left behind. Do any of you practice the healing arts? My skills lie elsewhere." He pointed at Eirik, "you are not of this city." It was a statement of fact, not a question. "Why are you here? An instigator brought in from elsewhere? I may not like what the Thrunes did today, but I am loyal to Kintargo, so let's hear it foreigner!"

Vandomir awaited Eirik's response.

Action 2

Warned by Caleb's raised hand, Vandomir brought his sword up to the ready, the blood of his earlier opponents still staining the blade red.

The impertinent tone of the low class thug, combined with Vandomir's recognition that they had a fellow Noble in tow was just too much.

Brandishing his greatsword, Vandomir smiled, "you're just in time, I hadn't yet cleaned my blade from the last scum that spoke such to me."

If I can't reach the man carrying the noble, then the nearest one is fine, preferably the speaker/leader.

Reasoning that the diplomacy of steel was best called for in this situation, Vandomir rushed the man holding the noble and slashed at him with his blade.

Charge?

Greatsword: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 2 + 2 = 22
Greatsword Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4, 6) + 3 + 2 = 15

If I hit and drop the thug: Watching the thug's body slide from his blade, Vandomir looked at the others, "take your wounded and go, but your prisoner stays with us."

If I miss, or hit and the guy doesn't drop: Vandomir looked at the thugs, "that man is of noble blood. Gently leave him, and we shall forget this ever happened."

Eirik glanced at the man askance. ”Of the mind that the king equals the country, are you? he asked. ”Personally, I don't subscribe to that school of thought. As to what I do here... I live here. Yes, I'm not a native born. You think this makes me an agent of fell forces from aboard? Do you also rush to appease the gods if you catch a raven flying across your path?” The monk was more than slightly irritated at the man's instant accusation that just because they had been present at the protest, it was all of their doing. And now this. Really, how paranoid could one get? Or were those merely nerves talking?

"It would be disingenuous of me to claim that the thought hadn't crossed my mind. The latest edict will have a disproportionate impact on outlanders such as yourself," Vandomir responded. "With that said, I will presume to take you at face value then for the current period, and until circumstances dictate otherwise."

So how do we conduct conversations in this format? Do we just do it and Fabian will piece it together in the turn recap?

Yep, that's exactly right. We all (me for NPCs) get to talk and I'll sort it out later in the recap.

I'll get to the results of Vandomir's actions after I hear from a couple of others.

BTW, if character 1 acts 'too quickly' (i.e., player 1 is quick to post), I usually just let it go 'unless' someone objects that their PC wanted to do something before character 1 acted.

So if someone wanted to do something before Vandomir acted just let me know and we'll sort it out. It may require rolling initiative.

Questions?

Female Human Warpriest/4

I'm back!
Action 1:

Rowan was relieved when they finally quit running. She was pretty sure that she had been running with a few broken ribs but the flame shooting hound had been great motivation to suck it up and keep moving.

As was her habit, she made no show of her goddess’ favor in order to keep her abilities disguised. While the others were talking she placed her left hand over her side, closed her eyes, and said quietly, “Praise Milani for her healing touch.” Warmth spread into her side and she could feel the bones knit back together.

will cast cure light wounds on herself

Feeling better, she listened to the tail-end of the conversation while the others discussed their situation. They made sense in that they were all in this together. Most likely their faces had been noticed and now their lives were in danger. She couldn’t go home to Elsbeth and so it seemed prudent to begin trusting this lot. Rowan felt that Milani had brought them all together and that she needed to help protect them.

Vandomir wrote:

”I may be able to help with that.” Turning to Eirik whose face belied the pain he was feeling she asked, ”May I?"

Tag Eirik?

Placing her left hand on the monk's body, she once again called on Milani's blessing for healing. As the healing energy flowed from her into Eirik she said, "They call me Rowan.”

Action 2:
Rowan prepared herself as Vandomir and Caleb reacted strongly to the capture of the man that was being carried. If they believed that they needed to fight then she had no choice but to back them up. Her morningstar found its way into her hand and she kept it under her cloak until it was needed.

I do!
I'd like to take more time to write a post, but...

I missed him. Callistria, please give me a second chance! I'll double tithe this week!

In response the thugs came through.

Here? They came here? I guess I'm supposed to tithe in advance...
Caleb reached deep inside himself, feeling the thing inside him responding and...

OUCH!

Caleb felt the Blessing coiled under his coat nip him.
What the hell? What am I... "Oh..." the one gloved man.

There must have been some sort of identification phrase in Thaeldriel's note. I figure might as well be 'cinnamon'.

"Not the nob!" Caleb shouts at Vandomir "He's my cinnamon supplier!" Cinnamon supplier? Really? That's the best I can come up with.

"That's how THRUNE works - 'you can't win by yourself so don't try'. But I'm not out to reform the nobles of Cheliax. I'm looking for Revenge. My goddess likes us to live, but I'd make an exception for THRUNE." Caleb all but spits the answer, but every time he says THRUNE there is something wrong with the word. It's deeper than it should be, and there's a buzz faintly underlying it.

Concerned at what the answer may be, Vandomir asks the obvious question, "just which goddess is that, may I ask?"
