Seems I will be going to foreign parts for the rest of the week. Should be back by Saturday, and the conference hotel should have good Internet connection available for the guests, so expect unformatted quick posts from me for the next couple days.

With regards to the loot: If Rexus insists that we take his signet ring then Rowan would take it - if anything to show Laria if they ever need to make contact. I thought that Tillia took the bracers. If no one else wanted the dagger then Rowan would take it. I actually forgot about the loot when I was posting, so that's my excuse. Otherwise I would never leave loot on the table :)

Loot: Caleb deliberately didn't take the loot. The kid's mum left it to him so he could take vengeance. Nicking it is disrespectful, and frankly the kid is likely to need it just to survive. Certainly he should've kept his signet ring which is the reason for flicking it over. His mindset is that if they suddenly need money for the rebellion, they can go rob and kill Thrune sympathisers, rather than taking everything from some orphan.

Action 1
Prestidigitation disguise: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Just before they left the shop, Caleb closed his eyes and concentrated, and one by one his companions outfits changed colours. Sadly, there was only so much a few chromatic changes could do for such a distinctive group.
"Hey, Rowan" he asked "Any chance you can patch this lot up a bit more? Blood & bruises draw attention. What's your deal with that, anyway?"
Tag: Rowan?
Once on their way he concentrates on making sure they're not being followed "Remember - this is a rough district. Should be safe for us, but there's people here that'll kill you without hesitation. Not even 'cos they like it, just 'cos it's easier. Killers like that, they can sense their own. They should steer clear with broadsword here. If they don't, let me do the talking - then stab them in the back while they're distracted. If we get separated, meet at the store."

Caleb looked up at he sky "Heading into afternoon. We need to take cover soon. Good chance there'll be patrols, then curfew. Don't want to get caught in either." He took a breath, peered into the room, then slipped in through the doors, blending into the darkness the moment he was inside.

Human Cleric/2

Action 1

Kaldar stared at the innocent looking stable. Could it possibly bee connected with a vast and secret underground movement, right here in Kintargo?

He nods at Caleb's warning about this being a rough part of town. He had always avoided the Red Roof district, himself. He straightens, and keeps a close hand on his morning star.

Action 2

He keeps to the back, knowing he is not good at this sneaking stuff. At least not as good as the slippery seeming Caleb.

"What do you think of all of this?" he asks,to anyone who will listen.

Male Human Monk (unchained) 11

Oh yeah. If the bracers turn out to be those of armor for example, Eirik's naturally interested. But since their properties remain a mystery, no need to covet them yet.

"Agreed," Eirik murmured, frowning as he tried and failed to guess how sturdy the derelict building might be. "The two of us can look around - could the rest of you keep a lookout?" he murmured, not wishing to draw any unwanted attention by raising his voice. Without waiting long for a response, the big man followed Caleb inside, moving with grace and silence that belied his bulk.

male

So Eirik and Caleb slip through the 'semi-open' doors and start scouting inside while Kaldar waits outside.

I'll wait to see what Tillia, Rowan, and Vandomir are doing before posting results. However, my wait ends tonight so unless I hear something from these three, I'll assume they stay outside and wait for the results of the 'scouting'.

Rowan shrugged, "I guess my deal is that Milani has chosen to work through me. I may be able to help heal a few more of the injuries but there are also limits. If I deplete all the blessings that Milani has given me then there won't be anything for later if needed." Studying Eirik, Kaldar, and herself she quickly assessed any remaining injuries that might draw unwanted attention.

heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Fabian, do Eirik or Kaldar or Rowan need immediate healing to avoid attention from on-lookers?

Trying not to use all my heals in case we run into something bad at the livery. Also, I think Kaldar should have access to healing as well, no?

Female Human Warpriest/4

Fabian, Rowan will continuously cast Detect Magic moving forward. As soon as it ends, she'll cast it again, then again, and again...

Female Human Warpriest/4

Action 2:
Rowan eyed the chained door to the livery with doubt. She had no experience in sneaking into places where your life could be threatened if caught. It was one thing to sneak out of your house to meet some friends. It was quite another to sneak into a place previously used as a hideout.

"I think it best if I stay outside for now and cover your backs...unless one of you wants to help me get unstuck from trying to squeeze through that small opening."

Keeping her back to the door where Caleb and Eirik disappeared through, she kept her eyes moving from windows to alleys to roofs to doors. As she waited for the all clear from those inside the livery, she kept her hand ready on her morningstar.

Action 1

Vandomir mused, "Ahh the Redroof District, home to some of the lowest of the low people of Kintargo. How did I end up here, today, and with these commoners?" Still, he could feel a vibrancy in the walls and cobbles that had not been there this morning, as if the city herself was more alive.

Vandomir turned to Rowan as they walked, "is now an opportune moment for me to ask you more of your lady, I mean, our Lady Milani? If I am to fight, and possibly die in her service, I'd like to know her teachings."

Tag Rowan.

Vandomir looks around as the group arrives at their destination. Spying the narrow gap through which entrance could be secured he remarked, "I don't believe I can make that. Perhaps we could open it wider for all?"

If some go to scout: Vandomir heard the plan and states, "With some deciding to scout ahead, I shall stay and guard the rear."

If we all go: Vandomir took up a protective position near Rowan as the group entered the unknown.

Rowan inadvertently looked around for Elsbeth to answer but soon realized that there was only her. Still feeling unqualified to share about doctrine, she decided to share more about her heart knowledge of Milani rather than her head knowledge. ”Admittedly I wasn’t raised with the teachings of Milani and so I may not be able to quote you anything from her holy text, The Light of Hope. What I can tell you is this. Milani abhors oppression, slavery, and repressive regimes. She continually fights for freedom and has been a constant beacon of hope for those who choose to fight with her. She grants courage to those willing to do whatever they can to live a free life. Afterall, what value does life have if you aren’t free? If you live under the thumb of a tyrant then there is never peace because you always live in fear of them and their whims which threaten punishment for minor things...like fancy clothes or mint. But I guess the most important thing to consider as a new Milanite is that martyrdom is a very real possibility. Milani’s followers are drawn to troubled areas and where there is conflict, there is a chance for death. However, death in liberating the oppressed is honorable and will be rewarded by the Everbloom.” Rowan surprised herself with her long speech and hoped that Vandomir didn’t feel like he was being preached at. ”Does that confirm your conversion or bring it into question?”

Vandomir listens intently as Rowan describes the faith from her perspective. Action 1

As they prepared to leave for the livery, Tillia took the bracers and put them into her pack for now and said, "I'm not sure what these do yet, but I'll check them again after I've thought about other possible ways to check them." She looked to her fellow revolutionaries questioningly and asked, "Unless of course one of you would like to try?"

As they headed to the livery Tillia made sure to put her cloak on and pull the hood up to help conceal her features as they traveled. It wouldn't do for them to be caught after all, and this was the best she could manage on short notice. As they traveled through the redroof district she thought to herself, Home, I haven't been this far into the district since I was very young. My master never let me leave his tower and I was to young to travel far before that. Yet here I am again, I've come full circle. Once they reached the livery she took one look at the dilapidated place and said, "It looks like I good place to hide but I think I'll stay out here with Rowan for now, I'm sure you've noticed I'm not the most fit person around and what it'll take to get in there is not something I want to do until I know it's safe or I have to."

Round 2
With the groupd entering determined Tillia turned her attention to her familiar and said, Draconic"Help keep an eye out for us please Salina. I want you to let me know if any people are coming our direction."

Tillia 'would' know that the Juliacs was the family that took over the slaughterhouse and converted it into a stable. The family died during the Chelish Revolution (about 80 years ago) and the place was abandoned then.

Action 1

Hearing the dogs and seeing them moving towards the infiltrators that had gone inside the building, Vandomir considered what course of action to take. He remembered something that Tillia had said earlier and asked, "you said that the Juliacs converted this place from a slaughterhouse to a livery, but that it's now abandoned? Who are the Juliacs? And does this place look abandoned to you?”

Escape Artist: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13 to get through the door

Vandomir gripped the greatsword with both hands and moved towards the door, in anticipation of providing support to those that were inside. ”It’s a damn shame,” he said to Rowan as he passed her, ”those are some big dogs, and there’s a mint tea hater in town who would pay good money for them.” With a grunt and some effort that involved wrenching his knee hard, Vandomir pushed through the space between the two doors, and made ready to defend himself and his newfound compatriots.

If a dog gets adjacent to him:

Greatsword: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Action 1
Tillia nodded at Vandomir's question and expanded, "Yes, they were a noble family that was wiped out around eighty years ago during the the Chelish revolution. Maybe now we know why." About that time the great ruckus started inside and Tillia turned to see what was going on. With the sight of the dogs inside she decided to wait for the others to squeeze through before entering herself, the more people between her and them the better. As she worked her way through the doors an old nail managed to scrape her skin badly, while it didn't break through it hurt quite a bit.

Delay my turn until everyone else has gone through before entering.

Once she had finished squeezing through Tillia observed the scene...

If the dogs are still a fair distance away from here.
...and saw that the dogs still some ways away from her. Tillia reached into her shoulder bag and dug out one of the scrolls which she unfurled to cast once she got the opportunity.
Retrieve scroll of grease from my bag.

If they had managed to arrive unobserved, they would certainly now be noticed with all the noise. Rowan moved towards the opening intending to follow Vandomir and dispatch the dogs as quickly as possible. As she got closer, the opening seemed to get smaller. She really didn't like her odds but she wasn't about to leave the others to be eaten while she waited outside. Thinking that she still may be able to hit one of the dogs with her weapon even if she got stuck, she made sure that her left arm went through the opening first with her weapon drawn.

escape artist: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (10) - 3 = 7

As she feared, she got her arm and shoulder through but as she tried to move forward she couldn't. Her cloak had snagged on one of the rotting pieces of wood and whenever she tried to move, it pulled tighter around her throat and threatened to choke her.

Knowing that she was in a precarious position, Rowan called out for help from whoever was closest. "Help!"she croaked. "I'm stuck!"

Action 1
With Rowan stuck, Tillia's way was barred and so she did the only thing she could, she helped the warpriest get herself freed. Examining the problem quickly Tillia realized that greeing the cloak was all that was needed. "Damn, these dogs look much larger from close up," thought Vandomir as he stepped up to flank the one that had attacked Eirik. He swung his sword and...

Greatsword: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 4 + 2 = 19
Greatsword Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 1) + 3 = 10

... If 10 damage drops it: the blade cut deep into the dog's back, severing the creature's spine. It took Vandomir a moment to get his blade unstuck from the corpse. He points at the last dog, "finish it quickly and let us go further inside before someone comes to investigate."

...If 10 damage only damages it: the blade struck true, and gave the dog a grievous wound, "that is a tough damn dog, how about some help here?"

Eirik grunted in pain as the feral dog worried at his leg, its teeth biting through the fabric of his trousers. Although he was more alarmed at the prospect from help from the greatsword-wielding Vandomir, as the heavy blade came uncomfortably close to his own flesh as the noble sought to render assistance. But his aim was fortunately true, and the blood that went spraying all over the walls was not Eirik's.

Unarmed: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Attack Eirik's own foe, or if it's down, try to help Caleb... but, considering Eirik needs to move to do that and only gets one attack, he wouldn't hit the beast.

With the enemy so small and already attached to him, there was little call for finesse. The dog jerked around erratically enough for his initial blow to miss, but as the beast slowed down due to the horrendous wound suffered from the noble's blade, an Anvil Drop connected, as Eirik correctly anticipated the beast's movements and struck down with a heavy blow into the back of the hound's head.

Since Eirik now has both real and nonlethal damage, any chance of counting them separately somehow? To help figure out just how much magical healing would be called for.

Forgot about that lethal/nonlethal wound state division, Fabian? ;^)

Also, you did have to play my turn for me when I was busy frolicking in a conference, but may I assume Eirik would have kept up his trend of nonlethal damage? So one of the big dogs would be available for delivery to the Paracount, if we felt like it?

Would a Take-10 Climb check for a total result of 16 be enough to get to the ring? Eirik's not all that keen on the ring's monetary value, but wouldn't mind to see if it would offer some clue.

With the feral hounds dealt with, Eirik looked for some place to take his weight momentarily off his much-worried leg. He settled for a derelict desk that had lost three of its short legs, set his weight down carefully and braced his intact leg to keep his posterior from sliding off the leaning seat. As comforts went it was sorely lacking, but anything that allowed him to rest his muscles for a spell was welcome.

'First clubbed black and blue by over-eager bullies, then bitten and ripped by canines. One fun day this turns out to be,' Eirik thought sourly.

”Did anyone bring a skin of water for the protest?” the monk asked, gingerly rolling up the trouser leg to take a look at the latest in the series of his wounds."I could use some to clean this.

A coin, perhaps, or some small piece of jewelery, but its placing suggested deliberate intent – unless it had been thrown up by some bored customer waiting to be serviced, someone rich enough not to go to the trouble of admitting his mistake when the trinket didn't come falling back to his waiting hands but remained sitting on a beam.

'Only one way to find out,' the monk thought as he examined his surroundings in terms of footholds. He stood still for a moment, frowning, tracing his intended path with his gaze. He tested his bandaged leg, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. Then he moved.

He took a couple running steps towards the wall, building just enough speed to jump, then to spring again as soon as his boot met the wall, this time launching himself high enough to reach the rafters with his fingers. For a moment, the bulky man hung there, breathing slowly, then swung his body back and forth, building enough momentum to swing his legs up and hook them over a beam thick enough to support his weight. After that, it was the work of moments to reach the place where the mysterious item lay. Eirik anchored himself with his feet, dangled head downwards for a few moments as he reached for one of his kukri to carefully cut as the wood around the item – a heavy signet ring of pure platinum, it seemed! And lodged in good, as though driven by a heavy blow. That, considering the height involved, had taken someone some doing.

With the treasure in the palm of one hand, the monk gripped the beam with the other, long enough to untangle his legs, then dropped down lightly on the floor.

”A ring, and heavy enough to be of real value,” he said, holding out the signet for Vandomir to see. ”Do you recognize what's left of the crest? Whoever hammered the thing into the beam up there may have done some damage to it.

Turn 14
Action 1
With Rowan finally freed Tillia made her way inside the livery stable. The whimpers of the surviving dog drew her attention as it hunkered down and whined in it's pain. The poor creature suffering struck a chord with her and she said, "Does anyone have any idea what we can do for this dog? It seems wrong to leave him here to suffer like this."

Tag Anyone.

When she heard Eirik ask if anyone had a waterskin to help him clean off his pants leg Tillia replied, "I'm afraid not, I can clean the clothing, but not the wound."

Action 2
Somewhat dependent on the dog, I'll post more later today if no one's reacted to her question about it yet.

Female Human Warpriest/4

Action 1:
Relief flooded through Rowan as she was finally freed. Everything she had trained for and she was almost done in by the door of a livery. It was embarrassing to say the least. She slowly got to her feet and rubbed her neck to get the feeling back into her skin. She looked around at the inside of the building and wondered how this had ever been a hideout for the Silver Ravens.

Eirik wrote:
”Did anyone bring a skin of water for the protest?” the monk asked, gingerly rolling up the trouser leg to take a look at the latest in the series of his wounds."I could use some to clean this.

Rowan nodded. ”I have some with me.” She knelt beside him and assessed his wounds before cleaning it and bandaging it. "I can do more for you later when I have better supplies."

After she was done with Eirik, the warpriest heard Tillia speak.

Tillia wrote:
"Does anyone have any idea what we can do for this dog? It seems wrong to leave him here to suffer like this."

”I may be able to make it comfortable but I’ve never tried to heal an animal before.”

heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

The animal's whimpering seemed to subside as Rowan did what she could. Looking over at Caleb, Rowan noticed that he too had bite marks that were bleeding. "Would you like me to bandage you up too?"

tag Caleb

Action 2:
Rowan thought it weird the items they had found - ring where a ring shouldn’t be and a well-hidden key. Maybe the key opened a door that they hadn’t found yet. Hoping that maybe it was cloaked by magic, Rowan said the necessary words that Elsbeth had taught her in order to see magical energy.

will cast detect magic to see if it reveals anything we’ve missed.

Action 1 continued...
Tillia nodded her thanks to Rowan, "Anything you can do for the dog is appreciated." Once the animal was tended to Tillia carefully knelt next to it and held her hand out for the animal to sniff. If it let her Tillia's hand reached out and gently began to stroke the beasts ears.

Charisma check to befriend the dog: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

If the animal seems to still be aggressive Tillia backs off.

Action 2
Eirik's quick run and jump to get the ring drew a gasp of surprise from Tillia, she'd only seen something like that once from a street performer. She smiled and said, "Nicely done Eirik, you're much better than the acrobat woman I saw perform on the street one years ago." She realizes he found something and said, "What is it?" His reply told her all she needed to know.

If the dog acts friendly.
Tillia continued to kneel there and give the dog some much needed attention. She looked to see what the dog's gender was, if it let her but otherwise kept it occupied while her compatriots examined the place.

If the dog is still mean.
Tillia heard the animal's warning growl and knew enough to back off. She carefully moved away from the dog and then began to help search the building. Of particular interest was the grate, though she was very careful not to mess with it, she did look to see if it had a lock of some kind.

Some info for you (or me later in the turn recap) to elaborate on.

- the injured mutt is feral and does not take kindly to petting (Tillia's roll was not good);
- the 'big dog' that Eirik knocked out is waking so you must deal with that;
- Tillia recognizes the ring as a signet ring of the Juliacs;
- the southeast corner wall grate is locked but the key found opens it;
- nothing magical is detected.

I'll probably recap tomorrow and move this along.

More questions?

Game on!
