This is the discussion page for the Tales from the Yawning Portal campaign run by WhtKnt. Please use this area for all out-of-character discussion.
My rules are pretty simple. If it isn't addressed to you, don't open it. If you can't understand the language, please don't read the spoilers (unless someone translates). Under no circumstances should you ever read spoilers labeled "GM Screen".
Finally, I will try to check in at least once every weekday and update when necessary. The exception is weekends or vacations (for which I will provide warning). My weekends are very busy and I do not usually have time to check up on things during the weekend.
Oh, one last thing. My wife is 90% blind and I serve as her eyes. I do all her emails, as well as all of the driving. If I miss a day or two, it's probably just because I'm very busy. Please excuse the delay. She knows that I am running games online and respects that, so it should be infrequent, but the possibility still exists.
Just a note. Don't take Fyird's attitude with player attitude. He's just a bit of a nasty temperament, confrontational elf, who is more comfortable with wild animals than getting along with other civilized humanoids... and he's survived so far, by relying on his instincts, and dexterity.
This is a fairly slow posting game, so some inter-party role play to me makes it more fun. If you want it toned down, just let me know. It won't hurt my feelings :-)
Just a note to let everyone know that I am in the direct path of Hurricane Gordon. This should be fairly routine (I've weathered many such storms), but in case we lose power or I am otherwise out for a few days, that's what has happened. If you are in my game, stand tight and I'll be back. If I am in yours, please bot me as necessary.
This is a brief message to let everyone know that I am going to be on vacation from Sunday, 23 September until 1 October. As many of you may be aware, my wife is 90% blind from glaucoma. She wanted to see Walt Disney World through the eyes of friends who have never been (or haven't been in many years) before she can't see at all. So I, she, and 9 of our friends are all going to Walt Disney World for a week!
During this time, my posting will be greatly curtailed, if not nonexistent. If you are in my game, I will continue upon my return, just sit tight. If I am in your game, please feel free to bot me as required.
During this week leading up to my vacation, I will be very busy and may be slowed, but I will try to get a post out before leaving for the week.
Joxie> On Tool proficiency. If your background, race or class gives you proficiency in a tool, then you add your proficiency bonus plus the appropriate ability modifier. You must also possess the tools in order to use them. Just having proficiency doesn't mean you have the tools in question. Also if you have the tools but not the proficiency you can still try, but no proficiency bonus, and the DM might change the difficulty level depending upon the tool.
Anybody can pick up a drum and play it, but try that with bagpipes and we'll all have to make will saves.
Often in 5E it is better to assist someone else rather than make two attempts. In this instance if you have thieves tools you would be a+5. 3 for your dex, and 2 for your proficiency... however it would be mechanically superior for you to assist Fyird with his lock picking, which lets him roll with advantage. In this case he would be
+8 (+4 Dex, +4 Expertise proficiency), and he would roll with advantage if you assisted him.
It has been a very busy week, much of which was spent with my parents whom I was visiting. I have a con this weekend, and I have some family business to take care of next week. I may be a few more days between posts, but don't worry. When I get everything straightened out, I'll be back on the action bandwagon. In the meantime, sit tight, or if I am in your game, please bot me as necessary.
Update: My wife's elderly aunt has been moved into a care facility. My wife and I are tasked with clearing out her room of all her belongings and finding a place to store them. We have about 10 days to do this, and we have our own affairs to worry about as well. To complicate things, she has lost several savings bonds and other important papers (like her will) in her room, so we can't just go in and bulldoze the place. We have to look for the papers as we pack. It's slow going and very tedious, so until we get the room vacated, my posting will be limited, but I will try to keep pace as much as possible.
Posting this to all my games, so sorry if you see it multiple times:
This week both my office and I personally are going to be moving. It's been crazy busy and I am not going to be able to post until Monday at the earliest. Please bot me if I am in your game, and if you are in a game I am running, I will get a post up as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience.
So I am posting from work:
Apologies about not posting sooner, but I have been down internet wise for roughly a week, and will not have internet back up yet for a week or so.
This means that I haven't had internet for the last 4 days (as we had 4 days off at my work for the holiday).
It's been...an experience where I learned that I use the internet more than I thought I did.
With all of that being said, I will try to post from work as I can, but if I am in your game, please bot me as needed.
If I am running your game, please bear with me while I try to post when I can. Hopefully, sooner than better, but I want to be up front about this issue.
again, I apologize about the delay.
I am posting this to all of my games, so apologies if you see this multiple times:
Unfortunately, I have some bad news.
A combination of work-related stuff has lead to me having to take some time off from the forums. I am, in all honesty, going to need to be gone for several months, as I am going to be travelling for extended periods of time (weeks or more) and I'll likely not have good access to the internet.
As I am not someone who would want to have you all sit and wait for me here, I am going to be withdrawing/closing all of my open forum games.
I want to thank everyone who I have had the pleasure to game with over the last couple of years here, as I have immensely enjoyed my time on the forums, and hopefully, once my work stabilizes, I will be able to rejoin the community.
Thank you again for your time and energy, and I am sorry that I won't be able to keep things moving forward in any of the games that I am running.
All, I am in the midst of con season and I have two cons in the span of a month, one of which I am working as staff. If I am slowing things down, please feel free to bot me. If you are in my group, please be patient and I will check in as often as time allows. Things should be back to normal after the first weekend in March.
I'll be at Pensacon in Pensacola, FL in about two weeks, and I will be serving as the Game Operations Director for CoastCon in Biloxi, MS two weeks after that. The next one after that will be Mobile Comic Con in Mobile, AL over Memorial Day weekend.
Okay, problem. We've lost Jaynie and Fargus, and Tairdo hasn't been with us from the beginning. My question is, are the players interested in continuing this, or do we need to put a fork in it? I'm all for continuing if that is the choice, but we will need to recruit a new player. The module is written for four, so I'm not too worried having such a small group and if we recruit a warrior, that will cover most of the bases, I think.
