The recessed spot next to the small statue of a Wind Duke would allow for a large orange, small cannonball or decent loaf of bread to nestle in its space. Ill-defined for a rod, nowhere near large enough for a giant spider.

As Solrisa steps into the room, a strange sight emerges through the door painted on the wall. A large specter of some sort, black with red piercing eyes, adorned in black, misty armor. A semblance of its previous life, likely. It hangs itself partly-exposed, partly buried into the wall.

Mortimer steps into the line of hellfire, striking the Wraith twice. Eidi strikes five times, overcoming the creature's incorporeal state.

Eidi:

The creature's touch is powerfully draining 1d8 Con, and those who fall to the Wraith's attacks themselves become wraiths. The creature can normally sense the energy of Life within 60'. There are many speculations on what it takes for someone passing into death to transform into something so deadly. A wraith comes into existence when darkness and hate consumes the dying human. This Wraith was once just a wraith. Time allowed it to become something greater...

Solrisa meets the Wraith with equal strength, striking it twice, herself. No BoF attack this round. Eri tries to target the undead entity, and finds no purchase within its hollow form. Ascaria brings Cayden's Fervent Blessing to bear, hoping his friends will still be standing to benefit from it.

"Good. You are still here." A familiar voice echoes the large chamber, as Flycatcher returns, flanking the party from the rear. "Your brutes have met Zifforian. That leaves you to me."

Mortimer lands substantive, magical punches twice, again. Eidi brings several more missiles to strike the undead entity. Solrisa resists the pull of Death's touch, before sending the Dread Wraith Zifforian to its final rest.

Meanwhile, Eri lights up Flycatcher, while Ascaria heals his friends who just stood on Death's door.

The Shadow Spider once again reaches out, touching not one, not two, but all four of those wise enough to stay out of Zifforian's Room.

The chamber grows quiet, the dim light allowing you to see that your number has been reduced by one. Eri is gone.

Eri:

The world you recently engaged in slips away. Into its Shadowy Self. Color is diminished. Sound is muted. There is little to smell, nothing to taste, so the other senses are less noticeably affected. But all the hairs do manage to stand on end, as you stand before the Huge Shadow Spider, which twiddles its mandibles, and shifts its eyes, to observe you, as well as your friends.

The others stand in their current positions, blurred edges of their forms, but easily enough recognizable. As they stand in the grand chamber, you stand in something like a small cavern, with ill-defined lines.

"You are strong. You are not easy prey, but you have been separated from the others. Can you travel? Show me. Slip back to your friends now."

Allustan turns to back to Mortimer, looking to Eidi as well. "I'm afraid I don't have any magics that will slip us into the Shadow. I did prepare a couple of Dimension Doors, as that was what I used to cross the entry portal." The old man wears a worried look on his face, as he waits.

Almost as soon as Allustan utters his words, Flycatcher appears at the opposite side of the room, along the ceiling, staring at you with its multiple eyes.

"If you want your friend back, stay where you are, and listen to what I have to say."

It waits.

When the spider returns without Eri, Ascaria frowns. He listens to Mort and hopes that's the right tack to take. He doesn't feel like they have a lot of options but to listen and he keeps his mouth shut for now.

"I have been thinking on it for a time, but I do not know how to reach the Shadow Plane yet Mortimer" Eidi listens the spider when it appears.

"What is it you want in exchange Flycatcher?" the elder seems extremely serious while laying over his staff, but he is readied against any strange movement of the spider. Eidi is ready to cast a ray spell and the energy is even starting to crackle in his hand.

She's got Eri as a bartering chip.
She's unlikely to just hand him over, because there's nothing but our word to stop us from killing her out-right once she releases him.
There isn't anything to stop us from killing her and coming back to find him.
She's afraid of us.
She's more afraid of the Marquis.

"A River Marquis, huh? A big tough spider like you is afraid of the River Marquis? And what does Your Toughness think the five of us can do against the Marquis? What if we don't succeed? Sure, you'll still have our friend, and we'll be out of Your Toughness', uh -- ... " he takes a close look at FlyCatcher and reassures himself, "-- hair, but I can tell you he's not all that nutritious being full of nothing but booze and citronella cookies."

"Does Your Toughness like that sort of thing? No, of course not. Your Toughness is more sensible. If you want the Marquis dead by our hand, Your Toughness is going to have to return our friend to us intact now, for we're going need him to conquer this Marquis."

Solrisa spins to her companions, her face a mask of mixed feelings.

"We can't trust it. It's friends with the tricksy SalamandEarl. I do not think we should do anything but kill it." Solrisa had already given the Spider a chance to be good, but the spider pressed attack and worked with the tricksy salamander.

It may not be evil, but Sol would strike it down rather than trust it.

Ascaria angrily watches as the spider fades from view. He wheels on Sol, "Now what Sol? What do you propose we do now, while it's sucking poor Eri dry of all his precious bodily fluids?!"

"Damnation."

He swears a moment and fumes.

After a while, he starts thinking again and asks Allustan, "I don't suppose you have your teleportation magics at the ready do you? We need to get to a real city to buy some fairly high level scrolls to get him back and, I suspect, raise him. The spider has no reason to keep him alive, and I doubt poor Eri can face it alone and succeed."

"We'll need something to get as many of us as possible over to the spiders realm. Plane Shift? Shadow something? I dunno, but something that can take most or all of us and back. We'll have to fight it of course. Then we'll need a Raise Dead scroll, and more diamond dust for the needed Restorations. I have some..." he considers his supply, "but we'll need more."

"Let's get going. If Eri does, by some miracle, survive the fight, I dunno if he's got much in the way of food and water, so the clock is ticking either way."

He starts walking back to the entrance, hoping Allustan can get them all past the dimensional portal there too.
