That's -- that's enough of an objection for me!

Yah, you said that before, but we were told we didn't have a choice. Mortimer halts in his tracks and turns to face Solrisa, cocking his head.

Solrisa wrote:
"I think we should only fight those that move against us, striking back with fury when attacked," Solrisa says. "When someone attacks us, that's when we return the whatfor."

He smiles at her demonstration of the meaning of 'whatfor'.

"She's right -- we have no idea what awaits us up there... We're already good at what we do, we've been overthinking it," he looks at Solrisa straightening his head trying not to look sheepish, " or at least I have."

Mortimer does an about face, and refrains from engaging the Gnolls.

"I like the idea of prepping for a couple of rounds and then attacking. I say we start with the gnolls. We agreed to not attack Korush or the archers first, so that's just fine. Once we are ready I say we attack the gnolls even if they are attacking the other group. But, yeh, all this planning might be for naught if everything changes."

"Oh, yes, that was lovely" grins Eidi to Mortimer remembering the elven 'catch' at the manhood "If they would had come first, I would have undoubtedly given my word to those amazing elves"

"Your disposition honors you Solrisa, but we really need to define ourselves if we want to win" Eidi looks at the half-elf female worried "Let's try to win. Winning is a very good tactic"

After listening the different group ideas Eidi reinforces his agreement with both Korush and Krinn.

"Hey, Sol -- show him 'whatfor' -- maybe he needs to see that again."

Solrisa smashes her large manish left hand into her right palm, indicating what the 'whatfor'...she looks at Eidi in case the half-elf needed to see it again. She offers him a big smile.

"That's the 'whatfor'. That's what we do," Solrisa repeats. "We wait for whomever comes at us and crush them, then we see what happens from there."

"I don't care about defining ourselves, we should just do what's right."

Solrisa, as stated above, will go along with what the group decides, even if it's "wrong". ;)

Tynan, having taken in all of the various dealings, double-dealings and mis-dealings, speaks quietly through the message.

"At this point, we need to just follow through on the deals that have been made with the elves and Korush. If we turn on either or both at the start, they'll ALL turn on us and we'll be out numbered quickly. Keep in mind, that we outnumber each of the other teams, individually. If we can quickly take out the gnolls, Eri can drop a fireball on the other two teams as they fight each other. We will have held up our end of both deals by fighting the gnolls first, and hopefully the fireball will even the odds if we have to fight the other two teams together." Tynan looks around at the others. "Aside from that, we need to keep Ascaria and Eidi out of combat at all costs, so they can keep the rest of us alive and in the fight."

Ascaria wrote:
"We'll have to face each other eventually of course, but if you like, we could play with the gnolls first." he turns and waves at the nearby gnolls and smiles brightly at them.

One of the gnolls stabs his plate, skewering a yolk-covered piece of ham into view. He waves it at the gnome, baring its very-white teeth before separating the meat from the metal.

Mortimer:

Can't rightly place where you wanted the Perception check to apply. You looking Korush over, or is the Perception referring to the glance at the gnolls? I'll go with gnolls...

The gnolls seem fixated on who approaches your group. It's less about you, and more who engages you. When both Auriga Arcana and Black Opal have come and gone, their attentions on you wane. The gnolls aren't subtle about it.

Mortimer wrote:
"Tell us, Korush -- you have been through the Gauntlet before. What can you tell us of your experiences? Just how accurate are the odds... ?"

Korush half-listens to the giant. "The odds are ever-changing, Mortimer. They can be influenced by a golden tongue or two."

Mortimer wrote:
"I liked the way you 'handled' that Wildman. No, we have not already given our word to the Cavalry! Yes, what do you think Your Venerable-ness? Krinn has gotten your back at least once already this evening that I noticed. Korush -- I'm not so sure about him. I mean, he didn't even get our Team name correct. He seems -- unfocused -- at best.""

Krinn smiles and nods in a manner most courtly, excusing herself when it's clear the group means to deliberate about the upcoming skirmish.

Feel free to continue beating out the overall desire to ally or not with your competition.
...

No more than twenty minutes transpire before the 8th Hour competitors filter back into the Coenoby, accompanied by more Gold Cloaks. The victors? Preaching and Bleaching, the gaggle of gnomes. Word eventually circulates that Cerberus fell first, once it was clear that Ratking waited and watched, allowing More Demon Than Demon to descend upon them, taking advantage of a couple of well-timed spells thrown by the gnomes. Fighting through two full melees was enough to bleed the Demon Legio enough to topple them, especially due to the ratfolk and their swarming tactics.

Ratking was the only Legio to surrender, carrying two of their dead off the field in defeat. Both Cerberus and More Demon Than Demon were dragged off the field, the crowd thunderous in its appreciation for all the blood spilt.

...

The 10th Hour arrives, as do more Gold Cloaks. The next four Legios are escorted up the stairs, around the curving hallway, back to the elevator. It is only when you arrive at the elevator's shaft that you can hear the roar of the arena waiting for you on high. Korush and his Cavalry make way for Auriga Arcana to step onto the lift first. He offers you the next ride, if you so choose, while the Savage Hand seem to be waiting for something, leaving them last to rise to the arena floor. When they do, Joran is accompanied by a vicious-looking dire badger. Scriminaduro, you presume correctly.

Your senses are assaulted as soon as you step off of the elevator's platform. The stadium is filled almost to capacity, and the cacophonous cheering is deafening. You can't hear each other unless you're nose-to-nose. The arena floor is a study in forensics. Rat tail here, forearm there. Only body parts. No equipment is left discarded. To lend to the spectacle, large carrion birds fly above in lazy circles, every so often swooping down to pick up something fleshy. Birds large enough to carry off small humanoids...

As you are pointed in the direction of the central viewing stage, a robed figure steps to the front of the balcony. With his hood pulled back, you can identify the Gauntlet's main referee, a lithe, bald wizard named Talabir Welik, who addresses the arena with a magnificently loud baritone voice. The audience quiets immediately, as the magically-enhanced announcement resounds.

"Our next field of Legios has arrived!! Please welcome... Auriga Arcana!! Deadly bows, mysterious beauties each of them, led by Rennida, matron mother and master archer!!" He gives the crowd enough time to cheer and quiet for each team. "Next, we have the Savage Hand!! Ferocious and cunning, they represent the power of animal might!!" More applause, patience, then Talabir continues.

"Further, we have the Black Opal Cavalry!! Gallant horsemen, with powerful steeds able to trample while swords sing!!" Before the crowd can rouse themselves, Korush whistles loudly, summoning three black warhorses across the battlefield from a designated entrance. The horses remind you of the same animals purchased from Able Carter's, with the exception that these animals are far better equipped. The arena erupts in thunderous applause at both the animals' approach, and Korush's team mounting up.

"Last, we have the Artists and Outcasts!! An assortment of might and mysticism, striking a powerful balance between self-preservation and devastation!!" The crowd roars, then quiets, but less so, likely due to the last announcment promising imminent conflict.

"For their newborn status as gladiators, Queen Abrogail, Majestic Grace and All-Seeing Protectress has gifted the Outcasts a choice!! A Weal or a Woe?? Step forward, Outcasts, and provide me your choice!!" Talabir beckons the scroll-bearer forward.

All the while, during these announcements, both Rennida and Joran begin to cast preparations for battle. You have two minutes to do the same.

Ascaria is buffeted by the noise and space. He cannot see much, and so trusts his companions to explain how things lie beyond his sight.

As the announcements begin, he shouts, just loud enough for the team to hear, ”Crowd around and block the other teams from seeing what I cast. Eidi or Eri, can you make out what spells they’re preparing if any?”

When everyone is close, he casts, using his rod, an extended Bless (+1 attacks & saves vs fear (morale), 18 minutes), followed quickly by a Protection from Energy Communal (15minutes or 108hp of Fire damage, whichever comes first)

He then waits for the combat to start before plying his other spells - though he keeps his rod in hand for the first cast…

...when his thoughts are interrupted by the announcer asking for their scroll. Realizing he still has it, he hands it to Eidi. "You are our leader. Go ahead and give it over." he grins.

Moments before stepping into the arena Eidi casts heroism on Solrisa "I do not know 'whatfor' game is about, but you are our hero Solrisa you will defend us there and lead to the success"

Eidi takes the scroll from Ascaria's hands with a nod. As such he approaches Talabir with the scroll at hands "Our Majesty has been very kind on giving us this choice. Artists and Outcasts though wants to give our people a real show, with all the blood and all the sweat" he spins around pointing to the grades with the scroll "Artists and Outcasts does feel compelled to fight with no advantage over our competitors and so we would be pleased to fight without the royal boon"

He looks then to the Queen and kneels extending the hand with the Weal scroll towards Talabir "But we kneel ourselves to the Queen's will and we will accept the advantage if that is her desire"

During the last preparation minutes, Eidi casts blur on Tynan, weapon of awe and shield of faith on Solrisa, uses one pearl of power to recover shield of faith. The half-elf readies then his staff in one hand, hitting the floor and using it to cast shield on himself. He then touches Tynan and then Mortimer giving them guidance and finishes drawing a rod and casting an enlarged sun metal on one of Tynan's swords, and then safely stores back the rod and holds the staff with both hands.

Solrisa smiles and hops with giddy anticipation as they finally have their turn to gladiate. She is excited and does not carry a fear or worry with her...this was going to be an experience, win or lose, and she was just happy to be a part of it. Part of her had lost sight of the bigger picture in the excitement of the moment.

She stands tall and waves happily as her team is announced, her golden hair and silvered armor looking pretty in the sun. She blows a few kisses if any one section is cheer especially hard for underdogs like themselves.

1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 11 + 2 = 15 Diplomacy - Sincere, basic, humble graciousness.

"Oh! The 'whatfor' is what you do when you have to do what you have to do: to defend yourself, or your family, or your friends, or innocents. It's when you fight your hardest and your bestest because it's the right thing to do," Solrisa explains as Eidi blesses her with many magics. She smiles as she receives his gifts, grateful for them.

Moments before the actual start, Solrisa will be-shield herself, raising the protective blue light special shield before her. Her hand goes to her regular long sword, then to her new sword, dubbed BluespRae, then back to her regular sword, eventually drawing it. She raises it above her head, then imbues with mercy and power from The Dragon, so that none will die under her blows if it can possibly be helped. +2 & merciful.

Finally ready, Solrisa smiles happily. She begins to beat her sword into her shield, rhythmically, again and again. She is excited and ready to go.

Solrisa will do fight whatever group Eidi, the leader, suggests they should fight first. She believes in waiting and crushing those that attack them first, but will abide Eidi's decision.

I hope he means that figuratively. I will not abide a noise making sword.

Arms folded, Mortimer silently watches Eidi hand the Weal scroll over, and grunts a "Thanks." at Eidi when he casts Guidance on him. He arms himself with a couple of tanglefoot bags.

"I dunno, but I hope not. I wouldn't want Cinder to be hurt in here. While we people might understand all this, these animals surely do not. Seems...wrong to subject animals to things like this," Solrisa opines. Then she steels up. "But I might have to strike their horses down if they charge us, huh? Maybe. Maybe."

Artists and Outcasts does fe... to fight with no advantage... competitors and so... pleased to fight without... But we kneel... Queen's will and we will accept... that is her desire."

Talabir looks on the leader of Artists and Outcasts, barely hearing a word of the half-elf's attempt at diplomacy over the roiling noise of the arena. He smiles a grand, patronizing smile, accepting the scroll, waving it to the crowd, before cracking its royal seal, and snapping it to full length. With his booming voice, the Gauntlet's Head Referee informs all present.

"They have chosen... WEAL!! The Newborns have sought an advantage over the other teams, a benefit unto themselves, a way to better their lowly status!! Well, let's hear what our Queen has to provide, shall we?!" The crowd roars adulation, but also something that sounds like shared levity.

"So Says Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II, of the Thrice Damned House of Thrune:

And one of the slaves of the city said, 'Speak to us, Master, of the Good of Evil.'
And He answered:
Of the good of it, I can speak, with gilded and agile tongue.
For what is Evil but Humanity, tortured by its own hunger and thirst?
Verily when you are hungry, seek food even in dark caves and corpse flesh, and when you thirst, drink even of dead waters and drying blood.
It is good when you are one with yourself, and your needs.
It is good when you seek gain for yourself, at the expense of others.
For when you strive for gain you are but a slave that clings to the master and sucks at Her breast.
Surely the slave cannot say to the master, "Be like me, ripe and full and ever giving of your abundance."
For to the slave giving is an honor, as receiving is the right of the master.
It is good when you are fully awake in your speech, and intention.
It is good when you seize that which you desire firmly and with bold steps.
But you who are strong and swift, see that you do not limp before the lame, for they will savage you, weaken you to be one with them.
Pity that the stag cannot teach swiftness to the turtle.
In some of you there is longing, a torrent rushing with might to the sea, carrying the secrets of the hillsides and the songs of the forest.
In others it is a flat stream that loses itself in angles and bends and lingers before it reaches the shore.
Seize that which is in your grasp, claim it for your own, for it will not be given to you freely like charity.
"

Talabir grins madly, as the audience surges in volume. He turns and bows to the Queen Herself, sitting high on the platform, clothed in silk, and sipping from an onyx chalice. Below her, to the right, sits Loris Raknian, a high chair, almost throne-like in its construction, allows him an ease in shifting positions to view the entire battlefield at every turn. Next to him sits a very attentive woman, pale skin and predatory eyes. She traces an intimate swirl on Loris's arm, before nodding to you all.

"There you have it! The Queen has given Artists and Outcasts profound insight as their Weal! Only they can claim victory for themselves, they will prove themselves.. or not... but are they not wiser for our Glorious Queen's words of encouragement?!" Another equally thunderous stomping of feet, and howls of approval from the masses of onlookers. From the central viewing stage, a peal of laughter, amplified somehow by Talabir's magics.

"The time has come!! Take your places!! You will begin when the horn sounds, no sooner!! Ooo, the anticipation!!"

The party prepares itself, as the other teams do.

Ascaria provides his Blessing and Protection, while Eidi bestows several magical enhancements. Eri steels himself as well, while Mortimer handles a pair of small sacks.

Eidi and Eri:

You witness several preparations by your competition at odd moments between your castings.

Rennida and Krinn of Auriga Arcana both cast Mirror Image and Jump in the moment, while all the elves consume potions to no observable effect.

Joren of the Savage Hand casts several spells- Speak with Animals, Barkskin, Bear's Endurance, Cat's Grace, and Longstrider on himself. He produces a wand, and also casts Bull's Strength, then casts Greater Magic Fang on his dire badger. The gnolls drink two potions each, to no observable effect.

Korush, interestingly enough, also casts Speak with Animals.

All four elves become multiplied by mirror images. 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 each, to be exact. All the elves consume one potion apiece. Meanwhile, Joren of the Savage Hand gets to work in spell castings, with hand and wand at various moments, while the gnolls drink two potions apiece.

Gold Cloak Flagmen direct each of the Legios to their starting positions, just outside the main pentagram's borders, before hastening to leave the battlefield. The lights of the Catafalque dim swiftly, quieting the crowd, then intensify. At the same moment, a grand, deep horn sounds, energizing all that stand on the bloodied arena floor.

The 10th hour has begun.

Anslo slumps in his saddle, riddled with four arrows. His horse remains untouched. With one of his men down, Korush takes a single arrow strike as well, though he hardly acknowledges it. He waits to join Bernice in action.

The crowd cheers for Auriga Arcana's first successful salvo.

Ascaria listens to the treatise on evil and frowns. That’s just being selfish. he thinks as he looks to the Queen. He waits for some power, some ability from the weal, and when nothing happens, he grins. Ahh, excellent. It will be on our own merits then!

He grimaces as the elves decimate the cavalry and wonders what will happen when such a volley is sent their way, for surely they must win over the cavalry in the end. He shudders at the thought and hopes more than one of their bows will fall before that happens.

He goes over his checklist, and realizes he forgot a step. ”Nothing for it now.” he mumbles.

Louder he shouts to the team, ”Crash of rhinoceroses but it’s loud in here. Stay close a few moments, spells are coming as we planned!”

With that warning, he casts Prayer (+1 attacks, damage, saves, & skills (luck)). He extends the duration with his rod before putting it away (move) in his sack.

Tynan listens to Eri's report, and Ascaria's warning to stay close, and formulates his strategy. He quickly evaluates the defenses of the human caster of the Savage Hand. (swift action) Standing his ground, he turns his attention to the badger, and sizes it up as well. (move action)

Tynan readies his throwing dagger for anyone who moves within 30', paying particular attention the dire badger.

Korush and Bernice trample the ground between them and Auriga Arcana, scimitars at the ready. They just manage to close the distance, targeting the multiple, shimmering Krinns.

Scimitar: 1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 20 + 2 = 40 for 2d6 + 20 ⇒ (6, 4) + 20 = 30 damage
Miss Chance: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Scimitar: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 12 + 2 = 26 for 2d6 + 12 ⇒ (4, 2) + 12 = 18 damage
Miss Chance: 1d5 ⇒ 1

Edit:

Confirm Critical?: 1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 20 + 2 = 33 for 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12 damage

Both scimitars find their bloody marks, cutting deeply into the elven archer, despite the illusory cluster of like images. All Krinns collapse in a singular bloody pool.

The crowd cheers for the Black Opal Cavalry's spirited response!

Both gnolls delay, preparing a concerted advance in one direction or another, allied with the dire badger. Hard to say if they'll join Black Opal, or deal with the Artists and Outcasts...

Eri and Mortimer are up! As of your turn, Mort, you haven't consumed the potion of Cat's Grace.

Bald male Half-Elf elder

Eidi looks frustrated as his message apparently does not properly arrive to Talabir. But when the reading of the scroll completes he smiles comforted.

As the spellcasting unleashes Eidi explains "It seems Joren has his powers coming from the nature. Might be one of those secluding druids. Kurosh surprisingly has also some lesser nature magic"

Before the horns sound, last words from the half-elf are "Unless the elves or knights attack us, we are going for the gnolls." he does not like giving orders, but he does acknowledge the group needs organisation and focus if they are to succeed "We should start knocking down the badger. It is the worst armoured but maybe the most dangerous if it reaches our lines. And it cannot surrender if left for the last one. Then, Eri, if you can fire at Joren, you might disturb his spells, while we go after the gnolls"

When the horns sound, Eidi, for some reason, seems to freeze in his place, unable to react or further give guidance to his team.

Sorry, I meant Extend, thanks GM Rat Sass :)
I will react to what happens after the horns only when I leave flat-footed

Ascaria watches the big man get sliced, and sees Eidi take a hand at bringing the big man up to snuff. ”Well done Eidi!” he shouts, happy that everything is going more or less according to plan.

At the top of his round, he breathes deeply as he absorbs some of the big man’s hurt and Tynan’s too.* He then casts Blessing of Fervor, giving the power of Cayden to his friends, new and old.

”OK all, you’re prepped! Let’s try to stay more or less together as a group so I can keep us all healed. Let’s get those gnolls!”

Still concerned for Mort’s overall health as well as Tynan’s, he beefs up the healing, by quickly (move action) channeling to heal the group. He carves out the gnolls and their stinking badger just in case.

Round 2, Init 10+

With little more than a thought, Tynan snatches his whirling dagger from the air as it returns to him. (free action)

Assessing the scene, he senses Mort's weight shifting away from his attacker, possibly knocked back by the heavy blow. Calling on the power of Ascaria's blessing to enhance his reflexes (+2 attack and +2 AC), Tynan dodges behind the big man, tumbling acrobatically beneath Gnasc's halberd. (move action)

Observing Joren succeeds to continue his casting, Eidi moves towards the center of the arena looking for a clear shot "Oh look! Joren succeeds in shirking off your attempts to dissuade him from completing his casting. He can't help but notice the injuries, however.

Roughly thirty feet in front of him, a dire boar appears! It snuffles in the strange surrounds, before charging Eidi.

Gore Attack, Charge, Ei: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 2 = 14 for 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 3) + 9 = 15 damage

Joren himself transforms into a crocodile, and begins closing the distance towards the Artists and Outcasts.

Ascaria brings the Fervor of Cayden to Artists and Outcasts, healing shortly thereafter. Eri takes several shots at Joren, hitting him once, though failing to interrupt him. Mortimer taps out Thryn, too easily, leaving Tynan to tumble towards Gnasc, criticaling with a flick of his blade! Solrisa mercifully mauls the dire badger, while Eidi strikes Joren again, this time with acid, though it also fails to prevent the caster from finishing his spell.

Meanwhile, Auriga Arcana seeks to finish off the Black Opal Cavalry. They concentrate their full barrage against the already-injured Bernice, before turning their attacks on Korush. Rennida's first shot is all it takes.

Tynan:

Too many attacks there, good man. In this instance, the Bluff(Move action) disallows a Full Round Attack. Your first strike hits, however, and the sneak damage goes off. The 5' step is still valid.

Bald male Half-Elf elder

Eidi steps back looking for protection against the summoned creature and extends his hand to reach Mortimer sharing his essence with the great fighter.
Share essence: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Me: -2 AC, 9 non-lethal damage
Mortimer: Adds +9 temporal hit points 1 h

He then commands to his unseen servant "Run to the elves of Auriga Arcana, take the arrows from their quivers and bring them to me! Quick! Run!"
15' x 4. I draw a square in the arena. Unsure if this will work, but let's try. Arrows are very light-weighted :P

Joren arrives! The crowd's noise swells as it anticipates the end of the charging crocodile, hoping the maiden is mauled in the impact. They are not disappointed...

Tail Thrash, Charge: 1d20 + 15 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 15 + 2 = 32 for 1d12 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 damage

The boar does its own thrashing, appropriately irritated by the giant's overly warm embrace. It attempts to disembowel Mortimer with its tusks, beginning its work through the mesh of the same shirt that continues to punish it with fire.

Gore Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 for 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 1) + 9 = 16 damage

Ascaria manages mischief, but misses the gnoll's halberd. Eri plants a single arrow in the badger's side, staggering it! Mortimer sizzles and burns bodily into the boar. Tynan firmly bleeds the deceived gnoll Gnasc, which drops to the ground following Solrisa's swift strikes. Eidi strengthens the giant at his expense, before calling down the wrath of Auriga, unsure if his Servant has the means of executing the newly barked command. At the same time, the gift that keeps giving punishes Joren again.

Acid Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 2/6

Eidi:

The Unseen Servant has a Close Range(45' in your instance), after which it will cease to exist. Also, it can't perform any task that requires a skill check with a DC higher than 10 or that requires a check using a skill that can't be used untrained, so stealing or sleight of handing are out. It was a great idea, having a little sneak about, but the Servant doesn't have the power.

With Korush firmly in retreat, Rennida's head flicks in the direction of the massive melee, appraising the standings. Artists and Outcasts, with not a single gladiator of theirs having fallen in battle, draws her attention. Anetah and Eelyssa spread out, firing single arrows, while their leader targets yours, with magic.

Acid Arrow, Ei: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17 for 2d4 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6 acid damage, continuing

Longbow, Ei: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 13 - 2 = 28 for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 damage

Longbow, Ei: 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 13 - 2 = 28 for 1d8 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (6) = 13 damage

The smell of blood and burning boarhide is almost heady. The crowd almost undulates reflexively in the direction of soaring arrows and roaring crocodiles.
