Ascaria screws up his lip and bites his tongue as he attempts to decipher the script.

"A shrewdness of apes - these journals, they're serious business!! The language is Aklo, a tongue for otherworldly monsters." he sighs.

"It will take some time to sort though all the ramifications, but it defines the current state of infiltration of Egorian itself. There's a whole collective of dopplegangers conducting espionage here! I do not yet know to what purpose, and it may well be that we've broken the back of the thing, but it was vast..."

He looks at Mort, "This note is something else entirely. It is a missive. It states, simply, 'A task, my thrall. You will meet me in the sewer junction. I will show you their faces, you will show me their corpses. Do not keep me waiting. They will only be visiting for the week.'"

"It seems to be saying we were sent here to our deaths. By the master." he trails off, worried about who all might be in this insidious scheming. He has neither the memory or thought processes to winnow down to the truth, but he fears the worst.

Mortimer sits next to the waif and grows quiet as he ponders Ascaria's words. He takes out the pipe he found in his backpack, cleans it and props it into his mouth. In the process, he rubs his hand against his chin inadvertently, feels his "4 o'clock" shadow and frowns. He puts the pipe back and instead pulls out his worry stone and absently plays with it as he thinks.

Broken the back of the thing? Yah... it did seem like a lot of work.
"How long will it take to sort? Where did all of the Doppelgangers come from? Why flee to Westcrown? Do those journals mention Westcrown?"

"Who are the people they imprisoned? Starmane of Barrowood?" How far is Barrowood? "Was that insane old man that we helped the real Eligos? He did offer us aperitifs -- and he fit more into Allustan's -- age group." After a pause he adds," Then again, some people keep better than others."

He looks up hopefully.
"Does it say anything in there about that apparatus back there?"

"The master? Who else knew we were only coming for the week?"

He stands and paces back and forth a few times before finally asking, "Take the child -- " He stops suddenly, crouches down beside her and sweetly asks, "I'm Mortimer, what's your name?" He then continues, "Should we take her home, rest ourselves, then go back to Eligos's mansion and see what else we can find out there?"

Solrisa's head boggles over all of Ascaria's revelation and Mortimer's questions. She has no answers, but agrees with the plan.

"Tynan, are you sure there are no more secrety things around here? I think we should go back now. Let's gather all the stuff and maybe Allustan can help us. Maybe we can message him to come visit...there is so much I don't understand," Solrisa says, gathering all the stuff of value or might be useful.

"I think we're done here."

"I'm fairly certain I've spotted anything hidden here in this chamber, but I really didn't check the laboratory equipment. I'll give that a look."

Tynan heads to the lab equipment, careful to avoid the pressure plate, and scans the table.

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

Tynan finds nothing new in looking over the table a second time. The table remains a strange laboratory fixture, promising some kind of work that requires something or someone being laid out on the table, for what the restraints must mean.

Mortimer wrote:

The girl watches the giant fidget with his backpack items, then speaks. "Scout. My friends call me Scout." She watches the group, looking at the individual faces a moment at a time. "This is real, isn't it? You're not shifters, or spiders? Why, why are, how did you...?" For her condition, her eyes do their best to water in reaction to a sudden swell of emotion, though very little fluid is able to clear the reddening. Scout falls into quiet snuffles.

Feel free to retcon activity. Moving on...

As you backtrack to the octopus lair, it is much as you left it, with one exception. The bridge out to the central pillar is still secure, the pillar is still only 10' from the floor of the waterless room, demonstrating the exit hall you entered through from the well shaft.

Then there is a second doorway, now open on an adjacent wall, also on the ground level. The room is quiet. Roll20 map has been updated. Again, the map isn't perfect- both passages leading from the water chamber are at ground level.

"I don't yet have the answers Mort, it will take further study of these ledgers. Perhaps tonight while we rest and recuperate."

"Allustan knew we were coming for the week though. I don't know who he told. But he knew..."

Ascaria will follow Tynan, leaving the girl with Hourpen and Mort for the moment (though he checks his healing tether before departing).

He casts Detect Magic and sweeps the chambers.

He then loads up the party with all the goodies they can carry and marches out with the girl Scout.

The lab equipment radiates magic, as well as the rug and mirror in the personal chamber behind the throne. The two scrolls in the chest, as well. Solrisa waits and keeps guard as all the magics are collected and identified.

"So...for the most part, we stopped the shaperchangers and stopped Telakin from wanting Tynan dead, right?" Solrisa asks hopefully in a quieter moment.

On the way out of the laboratory area, Solrisa will go check that her stuck and pinioned door (the other entrance to the mirror room) is still stuck and pinioned.

"Eri, look!" Solrisa exclaims, pointing to the changed and new doorway. "I don't recall that? Was that there before?"

Solrisa marches for a sligthly closer look and to make sure the area is safe.

Ascaria:

The lab table school of magic is not clear to you, but there does seem to be a literal connection between the silvered helmet, and the faceted gems the party now has in its possession.

The rug is nifty. Its beautifully wrought, and the magics cast upon it allow the pattern to be ever-shifting within its threads. Other than the color/pattern effect, it's simply a rug. Worth 1000gp

The mirror is truly magnificent. Once a day, for 10 minutes, someone can view within the mirror's reflection the true nature of the creature that is physically disguising itself. It likely won't penetrate illusion, though, strangely enough. A creature like a doppelganger could maintain its current physical form, and still see itself as pure doppelganger, while looking into this magical item. Weighing 250lbs, it's worth 12,000gp

Your Take 10 fails to decipher the scrolls.

Solrisa:

The door remains pinioned until you unpinion it.

Let me know how the party descends into the octopus lair, proper.

Male, Gnome

"The rug is very nice, but just beautiful, I suggest we sell it. The mirror is odd but, Mort, we need to take it with us. Once a day, for some 10 minutes, you can view within the mirror's reflection the true nature of the creature that is physically disguising itself. It's worth a lot on the open market so don't break it!"

It is however 250lbs, so we're not moving quickly out of this lair...

He hands the scrolls to Eri, "I don't know what these are, nor do I know what the lab does, or the helmet. I'm loathe to leave it behind though as I'm sure it's no good. Eri, can you suss it out?"

"Yes Sol, I think we've done what we came here to do - but we should definitely see where that door leads. Might be a back door out of here!"

Still sulking a bit for having to have his style cramped by an Unsightly Huge and Heavy Ugly Excuse for a Reflective Surface, Mortimer gazes down the octopus lair.

He turns to Eri. "Here, hold this," he says, trying to hand him the mirror.

"I suppose one of us -- or me -- could go down there using the Rope of Climbing, take a look out the door and make sure it doesn't lead to some Hell or other -- shut it -- then climb to the platform and flip the lever to see if the chamber fills with water. If the pillar rises again, we can all climb on and re-flip the lever and use the door if it is safe."

GM Rolls:

Scout remains close by Ascaria, waiting for the group to continue the exiting of the doppelganger complex.

Tynan GMPC takes the Rope of Climbing, securing it to the bridge and descends to the floor below. Following Mortimer's instructions, he inspects the new doorway.

Tynan:

The hallway extends into darkness, but you're able to spot two sets of recent tracks, humanoid in nature, that both come to the doorway, then return back from where they came. There is a light trace of yellow fungus that laces the edges of the wet prints.

Finding no obvious way of closing it, he returns to the central pillar, where he proceeds to flip the lever. As expected, the pillar begins its ascent, as well as the waters that begin to fill the chamber once more. The new doorway snicks shut as well, before the water can find its way into the hallway.

Now seems a good time to Level to 8.

Eri:

Nice rolls :)

Your study of the scrolls proves difficult, your mind almost understanding its purpose. Perhaps with more time, and more calm surrounds.

The table's study proves more fruitful, as you can see the weaves of magical energy that pulses through the lab equipment. The helmet and tubes are constructs, meant to represent connections, allowing the rites a physical manifestation to enact their focus. It appears that a person strapped to the table can be... channeled? into the gems, three of which you now own. What the gem contains is hard to say, but it doesn't seem to involve the capture of a soul, as much as a mind. Perhaps echoes, or memories?

Mortimer straightens up and turns to Solrisa taking the ungainly mirror from her. "Here, let me have that back, please. ' had to tie my boot," he explains. "It would be a shame if I were to trip, fall and break this thing," he says with a wink.

He waits for the pillar to finish it's ascent, then carefully crosses the bridge to the center near Tynan and the lever and waits for the others to join them.

He looks at the mirror, then at Scout. "What do you think, Scout. Is this mirror big enough or what? Maybe since it takes up so much space, we should name it. What do you think of the name 'Bozo'? Is that a good name for an unusually large mirror?"

When they get to the bottom, he will use the muleback cords and rope of climbing to gently lower the mirror down to the floor with the assistance of the others. He lifts it again before asking, "Which way are we taking this again, Tynan?"

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

The gnome slips into quiet contemplation.

Ascaria:

One scroll of Dominate Person. The other scroll does look awfully similar...

The satchel. Oh my. The metal bar is a peculiar mixture of ongoing magics. There is divination, as well as transmutation. Oh, and abjuration, as well as conjuration, too. The muddle of magics clears as you study it. The metal bar is arcanely locked, and appears to be the mouth of a bag of holding, best you can tell.

Faintly etched along the underside of the bar itself are three words, etched in Infernal- Long Live Thrune. Hard to say why you missed it in your first goings-over, but there they sit.

Do you speak the words?

Mortimer wrote:
"What do you think, Scout. Is this mirror big enough or what? Maybe since it takes up so much space, we should name it. What do you think of the name 'Bozo'? Is that a good name for an unusually large mirror?"

Scout looks into the mirror, which prompts her to smooth out her hair, and rub dirt from a cheek, which has rounded slightly into showing a smile at the giant's obvious silliness. "You want to name it? Like a pet?" She quietly snorts, and shakes her head. She looks at the others, as if expecting looks of tacit agreement. She shakes her head as Ascaria inquires. "I live on the streets. They took me, when I slept."

Male, Gnome

Ascaria holds up the magic satchel the party found earlier and peers closely, nearly sticking his head in the bag as he does so he gets so close.

Huh.

"Long Live Thrune." he says, turning to the party, "That's what the bag says, right here!" he points to the bar affixed inside the bag.

He looks up and sees Scout. He stops, and looks at Mort, "Aw! You got her to smile!" he grins widely.

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

A small ping erupts from within the satchel, as one straight bar becomes a circular ring, the size of the entire opening of the satchel. What lies within is... impressive. A small room presents itself, roughly 3'x3'x3'. Its contents- several chests, and two shelves teeming with papers. Contracts. Liens. Business arrangements. Tax ledgers. The chests are hefty, filled with coinage and precious gems alike. The coin is a mixture of dirty and clean, the gems a wide variety of value. But make no mistake- it's a small fortune. A mere drop in the well of House Thrune, surely. Sorting through the paperwork, even cursorily, is enough to determine that you are in possession of an Egorian Tax Collector's Attache Case.

Spellcraft, DC 16:

The opening of the metal bar/bag of holding appears to have set off an Alarm. Someone or something is aware of the Bag's opening, and likely always receives a notification of the openings...

Ascaria shakes his head. ”There is no higher authority than Thrune. Their family runs Cheliax. They are the government. I hear what you’re saying though - there is corruption in the government, that’s for sure. And we might not get any awards for turning it in.”

”But I think we need to give this over, it’s nothing but trouble. Look, I’m really worried about this. This is bad.” he looks shaky.

He turns to the others, hoping they agree with him.

Solrisa thinks.

"Maybe the original Eligos is sitting in his manor waiting for us? Maybe he's not dead and is just fine. Maybe the shaperjerks just copied him and he's fine. We should go check," Solirsa offers an alternate idea.

Ascaria wrote:

Solrisa smiles because Ascaria is somewhat wrong. Not that he knows he's wrong, of course, but Sol knows. Sol knows that there is a higher authority than Thrune...and that's the Dragon. Sure, it's possible that Ascaria meant 'civil authority' or 'mortal authority' or 'gnomic authority', but not true authority. For that, there is only the Dragon and what he says in her dreams.

Solrisa smiles at Ascaria.

Mortimer wipes the sweat off of his compromised brow and heaves the mirror towards the hallways.

"Maybe," he pants. "Maybe we focus on getting out of here first. We definitely need to unload this monstrosity at market and rest." He sets the thing down for a moment, trying to assess which way to go.
"Let's see where we stand with things then -- lots of things could happen between here and there. But no matter what, I think the six of us should all go to the mansion together sometime after we've had a chance to eat and rest."

Before the group leaves the octopus lair, Mortimer manages to find a switch in the wall, subtle of course, but made easier knowing where the doorway is. He depresses it, opening the hallway again, allowing him to peer into darkness, as the hallway extends much further than his sight would allow. From the smell, at least, it wouldn't be unreasonable to believe it has a connection to the sewers of Egorian proper. Perhaps it's only seepage from the Adivian.

Scout smiles quietly from the eyes, shaking her head a little more as the giant feigns imbalance. "You should be careful, or you're gonna break it." As Mortimer angles the mirror oddly to reflect the satchel's contents, she starts a little, only slowly understanding the giant's upper body strength.

The satchel's contents reflect genuinely in the large mirror, though it's hard to say if the magic of the mirror has been activated to really understand a difference.

It garners another smile, her body language suggesting a minor restoration in her self-esteem, as her shoulders roll back, and she stands a little taller.

Everyone please take 6,846gp and add it to your character sheets for the stuff we've sold so far. There may be more, but let's get the bulk of our stuff out the door.

As the group leaves the merchant district, Ascaria quips, "Boy, I've nearly enough." He walks along grinning from ear to ear.

"Hey, I don't suppose any of you might want to loan me a grand or so? I have my eye on a Phylactery of Positive Channeling - a real boon to my healing capabilities. I nearly have enough to buy it, and I'd like to get it while we're here in Egorian. I won't find anything like it at home - the town's too small."

"Of course, I want to make a few trips to the Sodden Hold for all those clothes - or at least the really good stuff. We should look into buying a bag of holding for the group at some point too. Save us trips, and Mort's poor back." He conveniently forgets the bag of holding they already carry as, in his mind, it's going back to the law anyway...

If anyone can loan Ascaria a few quid, he'd be appreciative and will pay you back. Eri and Sol - can you pay me the gold you owe as well?

With Ascaria's help, Eri is able to ascertain that most of the garments are local accoutrements of Egorian government and court. A handful of outfits are dignitary, representing foreign interests. None of it is specific to the Royal Family, nor to high functioning priests or magistrates.

For the mirror's liquidation, you spend the better part of the early afternoon trudging back to Thorntown, where the vendors are much more willing to look it over. It is eventually purchased by a magic dealer who seems to insinuate that a good number of houses might take an interest in its power.

You inquire once more with Lavinia, and find her amenable to locating such an item, though she does ask you to wait a day to do so. She doesn't have it on hand immediately.

More than happy to unload the enormous unsightly mirror, Mortimer collects his share of the gold and heads directly to the barber.

!!! Well, O.K.! That's two bits and ... 7500 gp left to go...
He frowns.

What am I going to do with $7500 gp? Maybe the orphanage could use it.

You can't give them all that. It'd be bordering on pretentiousness -- at least as far as perceptions go. They'd probably be overrun by ... shapeshifters wanting their kin's stuff back or something. Nope, face it Mort. You're just going to have to spend some of it.

From the center of Marketplace, Mortimer looks around and becomes dizzily nauseated by all of the people scurrying to and from one shop to some other on some quest for who knows what.

I hate shopping.

He somberly but determinedly wanders off in the Marketplace in search of Belt of Dex +2 (4kgp), Cloak of Resistance +1 (1kgp), and Armbands of the Brawler +1 (500gp).

"I have an idea for my special blue light!" Solrisa looks down at her special blue light that she got from the wall in the shaper den.

Provided Mort can tolerate shopping with Solrisa (and after Mort's shave), she will purchase a belt of strength +2, and a new MW darkwood heavy shield with illumination boss.

Ascaria thanks Lavinia profusely, and offers to help her open the shop the next day until he learns she means later in the day, not the crack of dawn. He sighs, It will be mine soon enough! he hopes and decides to try patience.

He does inquire about bags of holding, just to get prices, though he lets her know that’s not an immediate purchase.

”Yes, let’s eat! Scout, won’t you join us? You’ll need to eat lightly or you’ll make yourself sick, but I think you might handle a morsel or two with us.”

Ascaria joins the others shopping, and admires Sol’s new shield, though he feels a pang of, maybe, jealousy when she fits it with a blue stone and not yellow or green - his normal colors and castings.

”I agree, let’s eat, and get some rest. Scout, join us and tomorrow we’ll try to find you something better than the streets in which to live.”

”Then maybe we can return the satchel to the government.” he says between mouthfuls.

He swallows his food quickly, and watches Scout's intake carefully, cautioning her when she's had enough. When he's done eating, he takes out a fresh sheet and draws her.

Drawing Scout eating: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29

Scout accedes to the gnome's healing wisdom, her eyes darting to and fro down streets and alleyways.

Ascaria takes liberty with the couple of hours before dinner to chat with Tarquin, back in the Crooked House Tavern. The patrons are largely absent, including Tamash the half-orc bouncer, and Axton, the local alcholiphile. In Tamash's place sits a new bouncer- a surly, bald man in his fifties, with a couple of missing teeth.

"Well, as it stands, for a girl like that, you'll find, uh, three options, as I see it. You can give her over to the Church, for all of its work, I'm sure they'll find a role for her. You could also find her work on the river. I hear there are docking crews who experience a good degree of turnover. She's a little old, but you might inquire with the Haven, the orphanage over in Thumbtown. They'd likely take her if you paid them to."

The Crooked House Tavern will readily provide dinner, unless the crew is interested in taking in city sights, elsewhere.

With the exception of Ascaria's Phylactery, which will be ready tomorrow afternoon, consider all purchases verified.

Solrisa eats and eats some more. She breaks apart the bread with her delicate man hands, and begins to dip portions of it into her stew. She loves food and to eat, because food and eating is good, duh.

"...so I hope Ilya made it home okay. She was very nice," Solrisa says, helping herself to some meat. She has changed out of her heavy plate and now eats in her resting leathers. Her long sword lies nearby.

"Ascaria? I think we should check on Eligos before we head back down. We should have gone today, I think," she inserts into Ascaria's plans. "If he's okay, he might be know something or someone who can help with Scout."

Solrisa chew some more, thinking.

"You know, if Eligos is gone, then he can't help us find the evil Dragon, right? Or the green wormies? Then we should probably go back to Allustan. There is no reason for us to stay in the city. We have to find that bad dragon, that's the important thing. That's the only thing, mostly," Solirsa opines aloud, looking at the others for thoughts.
