As Hourpen brings more light to bear upon the room, another raging ball of fire erupts above your heads, as Eri brings his full might to bear for a second time. It manages to bring one of them crashing to the ground, singed and dying.
The two dangling from the walls above Solrisa and Eri size up the threat, and both of them disappear from sight, before the group hears more skittering along the walls on high, and through the doorway. Their last positions are marked on the map, though for those in the party with decent perception, it's obvious enough that they're beating a retreat through the only door in the room.
Solrisa, Mortimer, and Ascaria are up!
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Round 3, Init 10
Solrisa sidles closer to Eri, protecting the suddenly and obviously useful human.
"Oh, Eri! That was wonderful. All that fire makes me wonder how they have webs to even hide in anymore! I would think the fires would have burnt them all away, it was so bright and hot!" Solrisa says cheerily. "I'll protect you!"
Solrisa readies to strike at the first foe to come within reach.

Hourpen brings more light to the problem, while Eri ignites the crowd, bringing at least one of them to dying unconsciousness. Tynan readies an attack, as does Solrisa. Mortimer and Ascaria gather over the waif, trying to understand her condition.
The girl is in the advanced stage of starvation. Her fatty stores, so adorable on gnomes, are almost all absent, revealing the underlying bony structure of her chest, as well as arms, indicating that the muscles have also been tapped for nutrition, as her body slowly consumes itself. This is likely 6 weeks into the starvation. Healthy humans can last for roughly 8-12 weeks, sometimes longer. Who knows how healthy she was to begin...
Mortimer, you still have a standard action, should you wish to apply it.
From above, chittering can be heard as two of the spiders fall from above, both choosing to attack the giant for his attempted robbery.

Meanwhile, all four spiders drop from the wall in the octagonal room, angrily targeting the fireballer.

Unless Solrisa can See Invisibility, you can't execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with total concealment, even if you know what square or squares the opponent occupies.
On another note, Paizo was wonderfully kind enough to rework my last set of rolls as my critters swooped in to attack. In preview, Mortimer was only hit once. Now, he's hit twice. And the damage rolls shifted. I'll enjoy cleaning up the calcs with the next update!

The central lever has been switched on the central pillar. The pillar itself is lowering as the water lowers. In less than a minute, the chamber should be fully drained.
The poison in Mort's frame takes another round of toll on his body. Another 3 points of Strength Damage. The same poison begins its work on Eri's frame. 3 points of Strength Damage.

Ascaria takes out his flagon and casts Create Water, filling the receptacle and soaking the biscuit. He then offers the child a soft soggy morsel or two. He only gives her a little to eat and drink for now however so as not to overwhelm her system.

Yah. Like, maybe -- my leg... ? He frowns at the sudden numbing and weakness that overcomes him. He fights it.

Mortimer looks down into the draining pit. "Well, for some reason I'm not surprised. We'll need to get the child out of here anyway."
He sits for a moment watching the pit drain, and absently starts pounding on his thigh.

Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
"Do you need any help, Ascaria?" Solrisa moves to Ascaria and the child, offering a hand if anything is needed. She sheathes her sword as she moves closer. One round.
She eyes go to Mortimer pounding on his leg, her eyes go wide.
"Oh no! Are you okay, Mortimer? Did the 'down there' itches come back?" Solrisa points out Mortimer's problem.
Solrisa's eyes go to Mort's face as he claims that he's better, but then down the itchy area that clearly isn't.
"Mort, is there anything I can do to help?" She looks to Mort with a helpful and hopeful expression. Delay.

"Ah! That's better," Mortimer says.
"Oh no! Are you okay, Mortimer? Did the 'down there' itches come back?" Solrisa points out Mortimer's problem.
"I mean, at least it's not getting any worse..." Mortimer, in mid-stand, looks down again at his leg, still unsheathed from his rolled-up trouser. He tilts his head slightly in alarm.
I've never seen purple like *that* before.
"Mort, is there anything I can do to help?" She looks to Mort with a helpful and hopeful expression.
He looks into her green Bambi eyes, and his grey eyes flicker.
Right! The Lizard Folk Incident!"Itches"? "Well, it isn't..." Itchy! " -- I mean..." He tries to work his arm. Itches? No... I can't quite ... feel ? It's as if I've lost track of my muscles somehow... He shakes his head and drops his voice, so as not to alarm anyone. "I don't know. It is not tiring -- like when I was bitten by the Zombie Hatchling at the Lizard Folks'. It's all going kind of numb instead. It's just much harder than usual to move normally at all for me right now! Those spiders -- they got me here," He points to his thigh just above the knee, where it is all black and blue and grey and -- an especially disturbing shade of purple. "I think yes -- you can help!" He looks at Solrisa with an equally hopeful expression.
"Please?"

Eri continues to fight the poison and stay sharp. He tries to pull back his bow and knows immediately that he can’t.

Ascaria spends time carefully tending to the girl, who finishes swallowing the first piece of bread to make room for the next. She reaches listlessly for the flagon, her cracked lips smacking from dryness. "Water. Please water."
Mortimer's constitution finally manages to halt the poison's advance, as does Eri. Another 2 points of Strength damage, Mort old chap.
The water chamber finishes its flushing, leaving the central pillar only 10' tall, with a damp floor demonstrating four solid metal grates covering the outflow pipes. For those looking on from above, no sign of the pair of spider-like creatures can be found.
Tynan GMPC moves up to keep an eye on the doorway now being guarded by Hourpen, giving the others time to tend to the poisoned and the malnourished. No sounds emanate from beyond the double doors.
We are daintily out-of-initiative.
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
"I think yes -- you can help!"
Solrisa claps with glee and removes her shield so that both hands might help Mortimer. She calls upon The Dragon for a singsong prayer of health and renewal.
She sings and prays and thinks, trying to heal the effects of Mort's sapped strength. It takes a while, about 20 seconds before she is finished...and she looks to see if Mort feels better.
Lesser Restortation: 1d4 ⇒ 4 Str healing.
"How is that, Mortimer?" Solrisa says from her knees, removing her hands from Mort's leg. "Is that better?" Her big eyes look eager to please and happy to be of help.

Ascaria takes the shot-glass sized mug from around his neck and pours some of the water into it offering it to the girl. ”Just a little for now, your body needs to get used to it again.”
Still holding her, he shifts over to Eri. ”Let me see what I can do for you…” He duplicates a lot of the same gestures Sol does, and he works hard to mimic her. He casts Lesser Restoration on Eri.

"Whew, thank you! I did *not* like that. Let's keep searching this floor. Those spider things can still come back, but I don't want to chase after them right now."
Eri pulls out his trusty bow with smile.

As Solrisa places her hands on Mortimer's thigh preparing to restore him, he slowly slides down the wall back into a sitting position as an explosion of color fills his head.
He sees himself sprawled out on his back on a sandy beach as the soft golden light of dawn soothes his sore muscles.
A zephyr plays with his hair, and each wave that gently washes over him fills him with renewed strength.
Wow! I could do this again!
"How is that, Mortimer?" Solrisa says from her knees, removing her hands from Mort's leg. "Is that better?" Her big eyes look eager to please and happy to be of help.
Aw boy!
He slowly opens his eyes and gently wraps his arms around her soft solidy armored shoulders. "That was great! I feel almost 100%!! Have you --" His reverie is derailed as Ascaria speaks, and he stares at the gnome briefly in annoyance.
”How is everyone? I can do that again if either of you need it.”
He drops his arms reluctantly and turns back to Solrisa. "I think Sol's got this -- " he says then adds more quietly, "You've got it, right? If not, he's going to want to, and those day dreams aren't nearly quite as enjoyable."
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Solrisa looks back at Mort with a mixture of smiles and confusion. She has no idea what Mort is talking about in detail, but the base joy and happiness is something she likes...so she squees and enjoys the moment as much as she can.
"No, I can't do that again until tomorrow, Mort!" Solrisa chirps back, still caught up in the happy, excitable moment. "But I can try again tomorrow if you want. You'll be okay until then, right?"
Mortimer Smith |
"But I can try again tomorrow if you want. You'll be okay until then, right?"
"Sure, I'll be right as rain tomorrow!" Mort says cheerily, once again standing and offering to help the Maiden back to her feet.
Mortimer turns his attention to the door.
Ascaria |
Ascaria nods to Mort, and thanks Sol.
"Whew, thank you! I did *not* like that. Let's keep searching this floor. Those spider things can still come back, but I don't want to chase after them right now."
Ascaria looks up, "Well, I'm not sure how much further we can go with her." he points to his recent charge as he gives her another tiny sip of water. What she needs are ice chips...
He gestures toward Hourpen and Tynan, "We should check what's behind the double doors. I'll wait here with her. If it's all clear, we'll search it and, I dunno, maybe get her to safety before returning."

Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Solrisa smiles to Mort as she walks over to the double doors, opening them to see what is inside.
"C'mon Ascaria and Mort, Eri and Hourpen! Let's see what is over here!" Solrisa chirps happily with the glow of helping Mort (or the blue light coming from her belt, it's hard to tell).

Tynan GMPC searches the deep, waterless chamber, finding nothing out of the ordinary with regards to subtle traps, now that his vision is unobstructed from the salty waters. When the grey man gives the all-clear, the party members present at the double doors pass through and into the planning room, where once roamed the gnome.
The door on the eastern wall remains closed, and all who listen don't manage to hear anything. Tynan GMPC checks the door for traps, and, finding none, steps back to allow Solrisa to continue forward in the investigation of the rest of the complex.
Beyond the door is a dizzying array of lights and reflections. Polished metal mirrors stretch from floor to ceiling, forming a maze of endless corridors and reflected images. The hall continues east to the opposite wall of the large hall, while your sight lines allow a small look towards the northeast.
I reduced the token size for most of you, only to accommodate the slightly off sizing on the map.
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Sol looks down the corridor of mirrors and looks back at that party with a big smile on her happy face.
"Mort, look! Mirrors! This must be a funhouse! Oh, I haven't been to a funhouse in *so* long!" Solrisa says, pointing on...but then she yawns, a bigger not-smile momentarily overshadowing her smile.
"But I'm also tired and I want to enjoy the funhouse. Should maybe we rest first? Maybe someplace? That room that Eri thoughtfully cleaned of webs seems nice, maybe? Or should we go on?"
I think that Mort is pretty weary, and Sol would continue, but think we've done a lot already. Sleep or press peeps? GM do we have good sleepy options?
Mortimer Smith |
"Mort, look! Mirrors! This must be a funhouse!"
'Funhouse'? Is this a new definition of fun?
Disturbed by all of the mirrors reflecting infinite images of the party in every direction, Mortimer finds his mouth engaged in making noise once again.
"Funhouse? What's that? This is not as much 'fun' as I'm accustomed to having."
"But I'm also tired and I want to enjoy the funhouse. Should maybe we rest first? Maybe someplace? That room that Eri thoughtfully cleaned of webs seems nice, maybe? Or should we go on?"
Mortimer glances over everyone lined up behind him back at the gnome and the waif.
We probably shouldn't start something with her in tow... and what if we get too far away from the gnome? It'll take FOREVER for him to catch up so encumbered."I'm all for resting, I'm tapped. Maybe we could -- or some of us who don't stand out so much -- take the child back to -- whereever she came from -- or the Inn for one of the Inn Keepers to look after while we come back and finish sacking exploring this 'Funhouse'? I guess if I where in her position, I'd want to be out of here as soon as possible."
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Not sure we're going to get anything from Hourpen or Tynan. Pushing on...
Solrisa looks at Mort and then at the child and then at Ascaria.
"Yes, you're right. We should save the child," Solrisa says decisively. "Let's go upstairs and rest. Maybe...maybe Hourpen can take the child back to the Inn? See it to safety? I'd like to guard the hole in case the bad people try to get out."
Solrisa moves to go back upstairs after she shuts, then pinions the door to the mirror area closed. Unless the GM wants to alter plans.
Tynan Swale |
Tynan looks at the frightened little girl then thinks back to the swarm of spider who had captured her.
Why do they always seem to victimize the children... Tynan shakes his head ruefully, then turns to Ascaria.
"Has she said whether she has any family in Diamond Lake?" He pauses briefly. "Has she said anything at all?"
Ascaria |
"Has she said whether she has any family in Diamond Lake?" He pauses briefly. "Has she said anything at all?"
"No." he responds, "She hasn't really spoken, but she is likely to make a full physical recovery. It'll take her some time to get over the trauma though I suspect."
He carefully gives her another tiny sip and a morsel of food. "That's it for a little while now. Let your body acclimate. Uh, I mean get used to the food. You'll be fine now."
He motions to Mort to take her if he's willing. Ascaria is soooo slooooow with her in his arms.
"Indeed. Let's get her out of here and return to crush those who would enslave her. I too am low on resources, but I could last another fight, maybe two if the first wasn't too tough. I'm loathe to let this guy escape, so I agree with Sol - maybe one of us could take her out to safety while the rest, uh, rest here and guard the exit."
Mortimer Smith |
Mortimer easily relieves Ascaria of his wee burden of a child. He remembers the two rogue spiders that might still roaming around and frowns.
"We should all head for the entrance together," he says, deliberately not mentioning the child's free range tormentors. "You know, in case there are others who might have accidentally wandered in and are lost... they might need our -- mercy -- too," he says, with a wink to the party.
He starts heading for the water chamber with the child.
GM Rat Sass |

What follows next happens quickly. As Mortimer approaches the corridor to the water chamber, two doppelgangers in their unchanged forms suddenly appear out of nowhere, stabbing at either Mortimer himself, or the little girl. It's hard to say what their target is. Presuming Mortimer doesn't use the girl as a human shield, then the giant receives the brunt of the hostility.
