Sitting on a rock before a stream, Mortimer closes his right eye and looks out of his left eye. He sees everything within the one hundred and eighty degree hemisphere that is around the left side of his head -- including everything behind him -- at the same time. He closes his left eye and opens his right eye, experiencing the same effect on the right side of his head. He opens both eyes, and sees everything around him at once.
A bit dizzying, but I think I got it. Is this how gnomes see?
He spots a Giant Cricket approaching him head on. His stomach growls, and he gasps. As he does so, his unusually large tongue shoots out of his mouth to an unprecedented speed and distance, clocking the Giant Cricket square in the thorax where it sticks and -- much to Mortimer's horror -- pulls it whole straight into his face. All of this happens within the blink of an eye.
Suddenly, he sees The Maiden crossing the fen on her way to collect rare wildflowers to decorate her armor. He swallows the cricket whole, and tries to become invisible. Maybe the cricket, maybe the tongue. He doesn't know why, he just knows he doesn't want her to see him right now.
"Oh, look at this -- isn't this the cutest little frog?" She taps him on the head, and as soon as she makes contact Mortimer instantly becomes aware that he is transforming from a toad into *Salon Mort*. He wakes up, feeling extremely calm and refreshed.
That happened though! That wasn't a dream! She let me kiss her, and what's more she didn't seem to think I was a toad at all!
He freshens himself and is armor up, ready to face the day, born a new man.

Breakfast/
~~~~
”How are you feeling today, up to snuff?”
"Immmm," Mortimer nods affirmatively, grinning while trying to chew bread.
He pokes and prods a little, and when he’s dissatisfied, he casts Lesser Restoration upon him.
As Ascaria prods, Mortimer quickly chokes down the bread in between fits of laughter. " ...tickles ..." As Ascaria casts, he slumps and slides off of his chair; as suddenly in his mind he's floating in a giant, translucent bright green bubble, blissfully cut off from pain, anxiety and tension.
As spell expires, he slowly re-solidifies and returns to his seat. How'd I wind up on the floor?
"Yes, that's even much better, actually! Thanks!"
He nods and smiles in reassurance at Scout as they leave for Eligos'.
Reginald meets you at the front door of the estate. He seems to perform his job in stride, bringing you into the mansion's sitting room, and bids you wait. Roughly ten minutes pass.
Mortimer, not sitting in the sitting room, spends that time looking around the room for signs of what he saw in Sodden Hold. He looks for shifting carpets, blue torches, ugly oversized mirrors, mirrors of any kind, octopus or tentacles or sigils of either. He looks not only in the room as a whole itself with objects therin spaced, but in the various paintings and other decor patterns of whatever objects are actually in the room.
He also looks for annoying invisible floating (or otherwise) spheres.
He says nothing when Eligos himself arrives, but studies the man to see if there is any deviation of his aspect from the last time they met. Is he wearing a pant-coat? Gloves? Is he smoking? Carrying a skunk?
Solrisa, seeing a moment of quiet, peeps up again with part of the story she forgot to mention earlier: the imp and the satchel.
"...but I didn't think much of the satchel, but the imp wanted it badly."
Solrisa smiles happily at the conclusion of second story.
GM Rat Sass |
Eligos listens, a look of strain slowly tightening on his face. He doesn't look away from Solrisa, as she accounts for most all recent activities. Moments later, a light clicking sounds on the hard wood floor, as Felix makes his way into the room, and secures line-of-sight on his master. Eligos himself takes a seat, giving himself some time to study over the chain of events.
"You are marked. For what, your current inquiry? You brought this into my house, asked me to help you, and now... now... They used my face. My face." Eligos rubs his face, from forehead to chin.
"You dealt with this Telakin?" He looks to each of you. "You mentioned 'thrall'. Well, you mentioned so much. The sensor! That too! Oh, my. Alright." Eligos stands up.
"Take me there. I need to see this table you describe. You didn't destroy it, did you? You're sure it's abandoned, this Sodden Hold? We need to be quick about it."
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
"Take me there. I need to see this table you describe. You didn't destroy it, did you? You're sure it's abandoned, this Sodden Hold? We need to be quick about it."
Solrisa wonders if she should answer or if the questions are rhetorical (like Rae's childhood 'Sol, why are you hitting yourself? Why?') and she dithers for a moment before responding.
"Yes, we think it was Telakin, but how can we really know for sure? We killed so many of the shaperchangers, that who knows. Especially the one that was you. We killed that one...we think..." Solrisa explains about the orc/wizard with the clothes again in case it wasn't clear.
"Yes, we should take you there! We need to go back down there anyway," Solrisa explains. "And don't worry, Eligos, I'll protect you. I'm very good at protecting. But also, we might need to breathe underwater and swim...so be sure to be prepared to do that."
Ascaria |
Ascaria isn’t surprised that Eligos is annoyed at being dragged into this. He’s not the only annoyed. He is surprised when Eligos suggests coming along. ”That’d be great! There was much there that wasn’t clear to us.”
He links the man into his healing network and hopes for the best.
”I think we have a way around the water, but yeah, we had to use Water Breathing the other day.” He walks along with Eligos back to the Sodden Hold. We need to grab more loot while we’re there too. he thinks. He tries to pick up his pace and moves more quickly.
Mortimer relaxes a bit as Eligos absorbs their story as Solrisa narrates it, appearing to be genuinely upset by the whole thing. He's not convinced that this Eligos is anymore real than any other Eligos he's met up to this point, but is willing to entertain his desire to go to Sodden Hold and find out.
As they turn to leave, Mortimer points to Felix and inquires, "What about him? Are we taking him with, or leaving him behind?"
As they go, Mortimer says, "And if you can climb, don't worry about the water. I can probably handle that again."
This whole thing is perplexing. Shape shifters! I hate em. Maybe we're on our way to fixing it. Maybe we are just going deeper into the den. Ah, well, beats sitting in a puddle.
Eri watches silently, his face turning to a scowl, then passive then a scowl again.
Tynan Swale |
Tynan reads the note from Hourpen, and gives a smile.
Fly free, little one, and don't look back.
Tynan eyes Eligos with some trepidation, and joins the others on the return trip to Sodden Hold. He ponders his place in the group, as he was neither asked to leave, nor asked to stay.
I guess they're leaving the decision up to me...
GM Rat Sass |
Reginald enters the room, bearing a large tome. It has several parchments pressed between its own pages. Setting it down, the butler produces an empty scroll case, and waits for Eligos to make his selections. The older man's hands seem quite familiar as wrinkled fingers find unwrinkled scrolls. He pulls four of them, which curl upon themselves, allowing them to be easily squirreled into the case.
"Felix stays. I only wish to see the table. Lead the way."
...
Re-entering Sodden Hold is easy enough, as it continues to maintain an air of foreboding to those who come and go along Riverside Road. The well is still drained when you return, allowing all to descend and ascend. Eligos levitates, himself.
Making your way along the floor of the octopus lair, you are aware of several sets of footprints that seem to maintain an outline of some kind of yellow fungus. Likely, those who came and went have done so within the last 24 hours.
Returning through the doppelgangers' quarters, through the meeting room, through the mirror maze, and once more into the grand hall, you find nothing changed from your last visit.
It takes Eligos no time at all to recognize the table and apparatus you've described earlier. He moves towards it, cautiously, at first studying it from a distance, then closer. Those comfortable with magic in the party understand the detections. Something gives him pause, so he produces one of his scrolls, and casts a spell.
He's cast Identify.
He seems to relax from some gained understanding, but it's fleeting, as he walks from the foot of the table, to the silver helmet.
"This is... is... cannibalistic. It must be destroyed. All of it."
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
"Ooh...smash it all?" Solrisa asks, her face breaking into a smile.
Not for the first time, Solrisa wishes her beautiful and wonderful sister, Rae, was there to help. Rae loved to smash things and she was very good at smashing things. However, once the request was made, Solrisa was happy to oblige.
Solrisa draws her silver morningstar, her hammer, and her pitons...and begins to rage (without the trademark Rae-rage) upon every item that Eligos says needs to be smashed.
I'm not as good as Rae, but I'll do what I can.
Solrisa smashes and smashes more. And then again, and uses her hammer and piton to drive wedges so she might smash even more. If Mort helps with his crowbar, then even more smashing smashing will occur.
"What next?" Sol asks, breathing hard after the smashing is done.
"This is... is... cannibalistic. It must be destroyed. All of it."
"Ooh...smash it all?"
"Just a second Solrisa --" Mortimer attempts to stay Solrisa's smashing frenzy before it begins. He turns to Eligos, "What is the table and equipment? What do you mean 'cannibalistic'? Why must it be destroyed? There are people out there -- people whose memories have been stolen! Shouldn't we preserve this to fix that -- put things back the way they're supposed to be!?"
Ascaria |
Ascaria worries about Hourpen a little, off on his own with all this going on around them. He's sly, I'm sure he'll give them the slip. he thinks to himself, and smiles at the thought of them trying to even find Hourpen if he doesn't want to be found.
Later, "Good eye Tynan. I agree, we should definitely check that out when we're done escorting Eligos. There might be other dopplegangers down there." he shudders despite himself.
Still later, Ascaria asks Mort to kneel and, assuming he does, roots around in his pack producing the three pulsing gems. "We think these might be memories. You can see where they fit, there." he points to the device.
Mortimer Smith |
Sorry, it just occurred to me that Mort would really have wanted to try this.
GM Rat Sass |
Eligos takes one of the gems in hand, running a long finger up and down its length, as if expecting to see something more clearly inside. "Ah. I wondered what the end chamber might have stored. It is this- a gem, fine quality one at that. This must be at least 2000gp, each. Your only problem is what is echoing within. This machine, from what I can discern... writes a copy of a mind, which then funnels into a receptacle." He waves the gem. "This likely contains a majority of a person's memories and abilities. What it must do to the original mind, I shudder to imagine. I'd prefer to deny someone the chance to learn from this, here in Egorian."
He seems genuinely concerned, and seems repulsed that this table exists.
Seeing the look on Mortimer's face, Eligos gives pause. "I may be wrong, I have been before, but these gems feel like impersonations. I'm not altogether sure the original minds are vacant, like tipped bottles. I would worry that any mind subjected to this would be fractured in the process. I suppose that you could take your three gems, and use this... table... to 'wear' one of the minds you possess. I'm not sure what you hope to gain from this. You don't even have the victims."
Eligos looks to Solrisa to complete her missive, actually waiting to see the work done, before leaving.
Mortimer Smith |
Is it me, or does the voice of Christopher Lee pop into your head whenever Eligos speaks?
"I suppose that you could take your three gems, and use this... table... to 'wear' one of the minds you possess. I'm not sure what you hope to gain from this. You don't even have the victims."
"No, we don't have the victims. If we did, I'd like to think we'd use the machine to give back to them what's been taken from them. I'm loathe to have this destroyed when we know so little about it and upon who it was used. Anything in there --" Mortimer mimics Eligos casting a spell " -- to indicate who built this, and if there could be more of these Table Things laying around somewhere?"
Ascaria |
Seeing the look on Mortimer's face, Eligos gives pause. "I may be wrong, I have been before, but these gems feel like impersonations. Eligos looks to Solrisa to complete her missive, actually waiting to see the work done, before leaving.
"So Eligos, you're saying this is not reversible, and the table destroys the mind of the victim? I want to make sure we're not able to reverse the process somehow before we destroy the table."
GM Rat Sass |
"If we had a magnificent pleasure ship, I'd like to think we'd set sail tomorrow for Westcrown." Eligos looks at Solrisa, with a bemused smile, before turning back to Mortimer. "But we do not. What little I do understand about it should be cause enough to destroy it, I would think. Whoever constructed this is no small player here. I'm not sure why you'd ask about more tables, when you haven't dealt with the one in front of you."
Hearing the gnome pipe up, Eligos turns to address his question. "I didn't say it wasn't reversible. In a way, you reverse the process to overlay the resonant mind over an actual one. If you had the original mind, I'm not sure what it would look like to overlay the mirrored one."
Mortimer Smith |
"If we had a magnificent pleasure ship, I'd like to think we'd set sail tomorrow for Westcrown."
Pompous fop. Mortimer shakes his head.
"I'm not sure why you'd ask about more tables, when you haven't dealt with the one in front of you."
"Are tables evil now? Its intended use, sure, but not the table itself. I would rather destroy those who would use it to steal minds. You can't or won't say who made it though, so you can't help us narrow that down. You admit that you don't understand it much, so you can't say or speculate how the 'mirrored' one would 'overlay' the original. In other words -- the process could be totally reversible, you're just not powerful enough to be able to tell. Why are you so determined to have it destroyed -- to be here to see it done? What will you get out of that?"
Solrisa looks from speaker to speaker, trying to decide if she should smash more or not.
"I'm just here to get information about killing the wurms and the bad dragon," Solrisa answers, trying to keep her eye on the prize of her dreams. "I'll do what I can in the meantime, but sometimes bad things just happen."
Mortimer turns to Solrisa.
"Me too, Sol. I'm not at all suggesting that we drop everything to go hunt for the table's previous victims. I suspect one of them was the old man in the prison upstairs. Starmane of Barrowood might have been next, they might have been targeting more well to do people -- like Eligos. I'm just saying that at this particular point in time, there's no immediate need to destroy the table in my opinion. We could just escort Eligos back to the door and move on to the sewer tunnel."He turns to Eligos.
"What I really want to know, is why Eligos insisted on coming here, and why he is insisting that we destroy this table now. After what we've seen here and been through, it's possible that this is some kind of evidence that needs to be preserved, and that destroying it is the kind of reaction a guilty shapeshifter might have."
"Sol is right."
Solrisa smiles at Tynan, not understanding all the depth of what is being said, but knowing the broad strokes of what is important.
"Well, maybe when we finish with the bad dragon, we can come back. Maybe." Solrisa suggests, thinking about going to find her sister and Mum.
"Mort, if you want want to take responsibility for these evil devices, I'll leave them to you. I trust you to take care of them. If not, we should destroy them so the shaperchangers don't come back and use them again," Solrisa says. "I trust Eligos because the Dragon doesn't give me reason not to."
Unless Mort continues to object or agrees to take full responsibility for the devices, Solrisa smashes it all, as noted above.
When others are ready to move on, she will happily go to the new door and be ready to explore more.
Eligos looks at Mortimer almost apologetically. It is only when he speaks that it becomes clear that he regrets engaging with the giant. "It is magic, sir, ill-defined by your associates. It is an organization of doppelgangers, below my city's streets. I'll get peace of mind, knowing that it stops to exist for a time."
"Sol is right... we're here trying to figure out how to stop the wurms from infecting and killing, well, everyone."
"Mort, if you want want to take responsibility for these evil devices, I'll leave them to you. I trust you to take care of them. If not, we should destroy them so the shaperchangers don't come back and use them again."
Eligos nods. "If you leave it intact, for very long, I certainly won't hesitate to disassemble it myself, if you're unwilling to do so."
"What I really want to know, is why Eligos insisted on coming here, and why he is insisting that we destroy this table now. After what we've seen here and been through, it's possible that this is some kind of evidence that needs to be preserved, and that destroying it is the kind of reaction a guilty shapeshifter might have."
"The table disgusts me, blaggard. As do you. I promised Allustan that I would help you in your research regarding the worms, and I will keep my promise. As for the unwanted attentions you've garnered, I suggest you tie up loose ends, and meet me tomorrow, when we can finish our business."
Eligos doesn't wait for a response. He walks from the grand hall, leaving the party to conclude its debate.
Ascaria |
Ascaria watches the wizard storm off in a huff. I wonder what his problem is? Those were reasonable questions.
Unsure how to proceed he suggests, "Well without his help, I don't know how we're going to reverse this process." he looks at the door where the man left. "Apparently he doesn't care to heal the sick, only prevent future disease. Too bad. With his knowledge and skill, maybe we could have done both."
He looks helplessly at Mort, "I don't think there's much we can do here. I'm not comfortable with my knowledge of this table to strap anyone to it and use it. Might do more harm than good."
"The bigger problem is you thinking Eligos might be another doppleganger. I dunno. We could try talking to the law about this. Bring them down here and explain everything. Have them investigate. I'm not sure what to do really." He seems uneasy at the thought of involving the legal authorities.
"We have a day before we meet with him again. What can we do to assure he's not a doppleganger? Sol, I know you have the dragon sight and all, but remember, the other dopplegangers didn't register strangely enough. So I don't think we can completely trust that."
He shakes his head sadly unsure how to really gauge people when they can change shape. It blows his mind a little, and makes it hard to focus.
Mortimer Smith |
Mortimer watches 'Eligos' leave in a huff.
"It's O.K. 'Eligos'," he continues to try and goad the old 'man'. "I'm sure you already know exactly what I think of you without me having to say anything."
He turns to Sol after 'Eligos 'leaves. "Sorry, Sol, I don't have the benefit of your dragon sight, and I can't remember anything past five or so years ago.. Maybe he just rubs me the wrong way, but I don't really know who that is, and he seems to me to be acting more rash than I would expect of a scholar friend of Allustan."
He turns to the table. "It doesn't matter if we leave it or destroy it now. Either way the way I see it -- we're taking the responsibility for it."
He leaves Sol and the party to do what they will, satisfied that his voice was at least heard.
The group gathers at the second groundfloor doorway of the octopus lair. With Tynan taking the lead, the party begins its investigation of the hallway that lies beyond. The ashen man easily manages to follow two sets of tracks from Sodden Hold's occult architecture, into the Queen's builds, underlying the Her City, in its civil engineering.
You find yourselves in the Sewers of Egorian.
For its organization, you get the sense that less work has been accomplished in this section of the sewers, either for its proximity to the Adivian River, or its association with the Riverside District, not considered itself a wealthy section of the city.
After a good hour's travel, Tynan holds the party up, as the concentration of the tracks grows, as does a faint phosphorescent yellow glow. The tunnel heads forward 40' to a T-intersection, in dim light from the party's various light sources.
How do you proceed?
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Solrisa quickly admits that she's not very good at following the trail that Tynan so easily follows.
"Honestly, Tynan, I don't know how you do it! You must be part tracker dog!" Solrisa smiles as she blindly follows the man. "Do you think we need to track all this down? After all, we'll be gone from the city tomorrow. I'm sure whomever is mad at Tynan or us won't care after we leave the city, right?"
Solrisa looks to the intersection that someone points out.
"Ooooh...didn't the note mention an intersection? Hmm. I guess that if we're going to find something, we'll find it here, though. Maybe we'll just check this out then go get ready to leave the city."
Solrisa dons her shield (she usually walks with it unclasped) and moves forward (unless someone stops her because they want to be sneaky sneaky, which is fine, but not Sol's way).
GM Rat Sass |
Your eyes won't let you penetrate the darkness that awaits you to the left and right of the intersection, but you can hear small conversation coming from your left. In the next moment, the talking stops.
"I think I might be hyper paranoid here, but might scout be a doppelganger? If she wants to nanny maybe she is looking for a nice place to plant worms in young children. Can we maybe find out where she is from?"
"Not unless she has some way of overcoming The Mirror's magic. She showed as her waif self therein. I think she's a perfectly normal little girl."
"Wait here for a moment Sol, while I check this out."
Mortimer nods, hangs back with Solrisa and Ascaria and waits.
Delay.
Tynan Swale |
Stealth: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33
Tynan attempts to move quietly back to the group, finally growing accustomed to moving in the muck of the sewer. Once reunited, he whispers to the others.
"I heard voices ahead to the left which abruptly stopped as I got close. Be ready for enemies from that direction."
With Tynan returned, with no overt alarm raised, you are free to proceed collectively. Roll20 map has been updated, once the light source comes to bear upon the T-intersection.
A little ways in the direction Tynan indicates, to the left, there is a break in the northern wall, allowing passage.
The yellow fungal material coating some of the sewer floor is in fact Beggar's Gold, a harmless thing, and something found commonly in the darker corners of city streets. It's somewhat similar to its more harmful cousin, the yellow mold.
Single round actions, please. Eri, feel free to post two rounds of activity, if you're so inclined. Oh, also- who is bearing light sources?
As the sewer crew moves up to the T-Intersection, they arrive at the same time as a curious fellow, who has just stepped through the opening in the wall. He is wearing a chain shirt, with a hand crossbow in his right hand. The man looks to be an elf, but his skin is dark, and his eyes fail to reflect the blackness of a pupil. He looks towards you, startled enough not to be able to introduce himself first.
This creature is a drow, a vile cousin of the elf, known to prowl the darkness, living in the depths of the earth itself, in the realm of the Underdark. 1 Question, another for every 5 points 20, and above
"Hi!" Solrisa chirps to the elfy-thing. "I like your ears. We're just passing through, looking for something. Have you seen anything?"
