I will consider and rule on the use of Ears of the City. The intent of the author, I believe, is to have to spend the time to discover each rumor, since Ears of the City had not been published when this was written. However, I don't want to short circuit clever use of a spell out of hand. I'll have a decision tomorrow.

If it's going to trainwreck the scenario to learn things too quickly, then yeah, don't allow it. Or put a ceiling on the number of rumors we could discover per day--it seems like a large party willing to pay a gold each could get 6 each evening, so maybe a max of 6 a day is reasonable.

Hectic here, I'll get caught up tomorrow.

My ruling on using Ears of the City:

You can use it, but you only get half as many rumors as normal, since you aren't getting complete information, only snippets. So, if you meet the DC 15, you only roll the d20 for half the number of successes you get. In this case, since you beat the DC 15 with all 4, you get 2.

If you roll a duplicate rumor on the check, you get a duplicate rumor. It just means you heard the same thing twice. This is true regardless of whether or not you're using the spell. Rumor doesn't change to suit your plans, after all.

EDIT: Almost forgot. If you want to learn more about a specific rumor, you can do Gather Information checks like usual.

Very cool, indeed. Tell her congratulations for me.

I will move us along shortly. I have to randomly generate the scrolls in the shop. The book says to tailor them to my players, but given that Necromancy is generally frowned upon in Talingarde, I'd think the availability of necromancy spells would be quite rare.

Is there anything you're looking for, Wraith?

We could do that.

I'm sorry it took me so long on the scroll write up, as well. Randomly generating magic items has always been my least favorite thing to do, potions and scrolls even more so.

EDIT: Or, if you wanted to do anything with the basement of the inn tonight, you could do that write up, if you'd like.

Useful, but in this case the book literally says, "He has 1d10 level 1 scrolls and 1d6 level 2 scrolls available for sale. Tailor the selection to your players." Except you're a necromancer, and I'm pretty sure that most of the spells you want aren't going to be legal or welcome in Talingarde.

I rolled up how many spells, then randomly determined their school and used Archives of Nethys' filter to narrow down the selection and picked some that seemed appropriate to a small village in a Lawful Good nation.

Detect magic and similar divinations, like Detect the Faithful have a visible magical effect. Are you sure you want to walk around like that?

You mean, after you cast the spell, the effect is visible? I'm surprised. The effects of other spells with durations, like Bless or Owl's Wisdom or Undetectable Alignment, aren't visible, are they? Why are divinations different?

Detect the Faithful wrote:

Area cone-shaped emanation

I read this as there being a visible cone-shaped emanation coming from your eyes, or your eyes at least having some kind of glow about them to register that a spell is active.

I specified divination effects, not all spells, because if there isn't any visible effect, nothing stops a Paladin from walking around with detect evil on all the time. Just like nothing stops a wizard from walking around with detect magic on all the time. It's a way to balance things out.

That being said, re-reading Detect the Faithful, it does specify that it can be used to find hidden members of the same faith in the general populace, which seems to specify there is at least some purpose to using it covertly. In that case, I'll go with the "specific trumps general" rule and say that Detect the Faithful is an exception to this rule. It still applies to detect magic, good, and the like, however.

I'll give you your results in gameplay shortly.

Thanks.

The main reason I see not to have Detect Magic and Detect Evil and the like on all the time is that they have duration: concentration, which means while they're using them, the casters can't take any other standard action--no spells, moving at half the speed of everyone who can take two actions, etc. I imagine it would be a lot like walking around looking at everything through your smartphone all the time--possible, but pretty inconvenient.

(Now I'm imagining Paladins playing Pokemon Go.)

See, I don't see that as an impediment outside of combat. Yeah, you aren't walking fast, but if you aren't in a hurry, you don't need to. It's not like you're actually taking your eyes off the crowd.

I'm trying to decide how a paladin would feel about a world where people routinely imprison possibly intelligent animals in tiny balls and make them fight each other. On the one hand, the whole world considers it acceptable. On the other, there are a lot of social implications in the lore of the world.

Yeah, it's like having a drawn weapon in your hand 24/7...there's no game mechanic that really penalizes it, so some players who don't care about roleplay will have their characters do that. To me it seems clear that spending every waking moment concentrating on a spell would be a terrible life.

It seems like ruling that Detect Magic etc. are obvious isn't an impediment to using them in the old dungeon crawl, which is 90% of the time when someone wants to have those spells up and running.

2. spying on the fort from a distance, with a spyglass if there is one available in town (especially if it can be stolen, as those things are expensive!)

I'm pretty confused about the ambush at the rock. How many days does it take to get out there?

You could manage the journey there and back in a few hours if you have horses. It would take a full day walking. It takes Captain Varning and his patrol longer because they have a less direct patrol route to follow, as opposed to going directly there.
