Sorry for the quadra-post, but I have an exercise that I want all of you to participate in. Please do so as soon as you have a character figured out:

I'd like each of you to pick two of the others and come up with one of two things: one, if you think your characters would know each other already, go ahead and write about how. If you think they wouldn't write about how you think the two characters would get along, or what their relationship would look like.

leinathan wrote:
How do the people of Sandpoint feel about him? Does he interact with the town a lot? Does he live there, or out in the forest? How long has he known Shalelu?

Kroob has lived on the outskirts of Sandpoint for a year or two now. He keeps to himself and rarely enters town. The townsfolk don't particularly like him, but they don't bother him much since he doesn't cause any trouble. Kroob does earn a little coin by selling arrows and bolts outside from a makeshift stall outside the city gates. He's known Shalelu for ~3 years. He is 15 years old now (Goblins reach adulthood at age 10).

Yorick here. I still need to make up the crunch (reusing this alias so please ignore everything in it for now) and I’m going to flesh out the backstory more, but especially with the ties to other characters, I want to at least get the barebones up (partially for feedback from leinathan since I take some decent-sized liberties with Ameiko’s background). Definitely would love feedback.

Rae:

What does your character look like? What kinds of clothes do they wear? What weapons and armor do they carry?

I actually would probably model her after Ameiko’s sister Amaya - http://pathfinderwiki.com/mediawiki/images/b/be/Amaya_Kaijitsu.jpg - with the single exception that she’d carry a rapier instead of the quarterstaff. Definitely dark haired, attractive, and with a cloak over armour, Her primary weapon is the rapier, but she tries to use her brain more than brawn (though she can also be impulsive.) She also has a few... other tricks up her sleeve

How is your character acquainted with Ameiko Kaijitsu? Why would he care about traveling with her across the world?

What I have in mind - and I want to elaborate on this more - is that Ameiko and Rae grew up together in Sandpoint. Rae’s parents weren’t upper class like Lonjiku’s was, and he’d forbid them to not spend time together, but of course, Ameiko has never really been one to respect authority, and would do it anyway, even if it meant sneaking away.

Rae’s father would have been a sailor, with her mother dying in childbirth (or something? I want Ameiko to be the strong female figure in her life, even in the early years). The father would probably have died at sea, or possibly had problems with gambling or alcohol. Still working on that bit. It might be as simple as “He’s away at sea and she has no idea if he’s alive”. In any case, it’ll leave her fairly alone on the streets, so when Ameiko runs away to Magnimar at ~13, Rae actually goes with her, and remains in Magnimar when Ameiko returns for her mother’s funeral (expecting Ameiko to come back afterwards).

Instead, she’ll get a simple “I love you very much but I’m not coming back” letter sent to her. And she won’t hear from Ameiko basically until now, which is… what, ten years later? So there should be some interesting feelings on both sides there. A hurt that hasn’t completely faded, abandonment, but also Rae clearly still has some feelings of dedication with dropping everything to help her immediately, and of course hopes that they can “get it right this time”. Though, she’s probably also terrified of the notion.

4. How did they become whatever class they are? Were they trained? Did it come to them magically one day?

So, a level of Swashbuckler to represent time spent on a ship with her father in her youth, as well as being something of a vagabond. The rest of her levels will be in Investigator (psychic detective). A lot of social skills and rogue-like skills to represent some time on the streets.

The psychic powers would be innate, and would be one of the things that had helped her to survive. She could tell who was an easy mark by how they were thinking, whether they were buying her story, telling them what they wanted to hear. It’s the only thing that’s kept her one step ahead.

Knowledge of arcana and spellcraft would be from having done some jobs tracking things down for a wizard. She’s a bit known as something of a “problem solver” in Magnimar now. Think less the “I need someone killed” and more “I need this object / person tracked down”. Leaning towards a Jessica Jones style private investigator (with slightly less substance abuse).

5. What is your character like? How do they treat people?

She is straightforward and intelligent, but clever and secretive as well. She wants to help make the world a better place but isn’t sure where to start. In a city like Magnimar, it seems that corruption is wide-spread. She tends to act a bit “proper” in a way that sometimes puts people off, because of people like Lonjiku who judged her for her family’s status, but she does actually care about people.

6. Why is your character whatever alignment they are? Explain what their own ideas of ethics or morality mean to them.
7. If you have a character with a Code, like a paladin, be explicit about what that Code means.

I’m really not sure what her alignment will be, I’m going to keep musing on it a bit.

She probably doesn’t have too many rules, and certainly has no problem operating outside of the Law itself, but I think the big one would be “I don’t kill for money”. She’ll point you to the person, but she won’t pull the trigger. If she’s, say, doing a job to rescue someone who’s been sold into slavery, she’ll kill to protect them and herself, but she would never accept a job that was a hit.

I may come up with other personal rules that push her towards being LN. She definitely WANTS to be LG. An interesting challenge for her as a person / character will be if Ameiko falls for someone else. It's not always easy to be the person that you want to be.

Relations with Others
Being from Magnimar and being recruited specifically for this, I’m not sure I’d know anyone already (unless someone submits a story that they also grew up with Ameiko as a friend or sibling) but right now I think the two that I have the best relationships with would be Kara the Oracle and Kroob the Goblin.

With Kara, I think we’d have some similar feelings with regards to homelessness and being lonely. I also think that Kara would succeed more at actually being a good person and trying to change the world, which Rae would find inspiring.

As far as Kroob goes, one of the reasons that Rae is so hesitant to kill in general is that she very much believes in the idea of redemption. Kroob would be an interesting companion for her to interact with because of a juxtaposition. He is someone who has left behind what he was and has learned to be more, but at the same time, he murders for money, which is something that she’s never done - or is it that she's never HAD to?

Oh well, might as well post what I got since it's mostly written. Still need to cover personality and attire, as well as finish buying travelling supplies, but too sleepy, later.

Background:
Rumor was, Irissa's mother used to be pretty strange way back before she just got up and left for the forest in the middle of the night. Nobody had seen her since, but nobody had forgotten either, because the clearly daughter inherited this strangeness. As her father was unknown, and Irissa had since stayed with a distant cousin's family. At first things were tame enough - the girl stood out thanks to her beauty and natural gift to sway people, but the strangest things she'd shown were bouts of odd behaviour, dreams and atypical perceptiveness. As she grew, however, signs of considerable magic ability started to manifest.

Strange noises and lights were harmless, if irritating. Melting through the table with some sort of acid in a fit of anger was not. And controlling her emotions was becoming harder with each day - she'd been growing increasingly whimsical and prone to acting without thinking. The worst incident by far was an argument with one of her relatives, a girl two years older. One moment they were nearly yelling at each other, both too stubborn to back off, and then in a sudden bout of inspiration Irissa reached out with something she wasn't sure she had before and observed, stupefied, as her opponent froze and broke down into rushed apologies for starting a quarrel over something meaningless. The worst part? Irissa could tell that she fell far short of the full effect, lacking power to truly assert control.

Within an hour she packed her belongings and ran. Shalelu found deep in the woods almost two weeks later, dirty, scared and starving. That was the start of her sort-of-sibling-sort-of-apprentice relationship with the elven ranger.

Over the next year, Irissa got to know her big sister figure closer as she learned to live off the land with a certain measure of comfort, and more importantly, learned to control her impulses, attempting to emulate her mentor's patience and discipline, if with limited success. Eventually, to Irissa's distress (at least until proper explanations were given), Shalelu had to leave her behind for a couple months to make one of her regular trips to other regions. Before setting out she suggested that the girl should stay at the Rusty Dragon.

Until then Ameiko had been but a distant acquaintance, however over the duration of her stay at the inn the bard had quickly grown to be Irissa's second most favourite person, not in the least because she took upon herself to provide the basics of magic education the girl lacked to truly wield her abilities. It was clear that Irissa had considerable talent for enchantment magics, however, feeling uncertain about relying solely on something that drove her from home in the first place, she also took to studying illusions as something of an adjacent, but less invasive discipline, at least in her experience.

Magic instruction aside, she picked quite a few more mundane skills from Ameiko, in particular during her work at the inn - something she initially volunteered to do to repay her new friend's help, yet found herself enjoying. Merriment and admiration of the guests felt... appropriate and brought an odd sense of flattered satisfaction. Since then, even with Shalelu back at the town, Irissa continued to regularly visit the Dragon. She was, frankly, enjoying this new life, which is why the rumours of her friends possibly leaving Sandpoint behind alarmed her so. Still, this place would be meaningless for her without Shalelu and Ameiko, meaning that should they choose to leave, she was going with them.

What for? Why did she get power?

hmm.... thinking about it. the fey are chaotic and unpredictable beings who tend only to care about nature. her family had a bad rep often killing humans in order to be left alone. it could be simply they gifted a mortal of this family as it could benefit them.

Thank you! That's a good answer :)

I only have one real clarifying question for Irissa (in addition to the query about connections to other characters):

How would she react to the assertion that Ameiko is royalty? Given that the trip involves thousands of miles of overland travel followed by what is possibly political intrigue up the wazoo, is she committed enough to Ameiko to support her through that?

I don't know if that's true - using your profile as an example, there are lots of things that are out of date or incorrect. She has one too many feats, her ability scores are purchased using 20-point-buy rather than 17, she has either 1 too many or 3 too few hit points depending on where her favored class goes, she has too many spells (probably because she has the spells of a 5th-level sorcerer), and you don't have enough equipment.

You are absolutly correct, we had a internet crisis in germany and I didn´t notice that it had not been updated. It is now.

I apologize for that misunderstanding!

Mix of amusement and astonishment over Ameiko ending up being an actual bard's tale character in real life. There might be teasing, depending on Ameiko's feelings on the matter.

She's entirely unconcerned about travel. It's nothing new for a varisian - one's home is with one's people, and it'll probably be a lot like living with Shalelu in the wilds, except always heading in one direction rather than around a single place. There might be danger, but there also might be adventure and wonders to see, so she's pretty eager.

As for the fighting at the end, it's a bit too far in the future for a part-fey teenager to seriously consider planning for. Still, if Ameiko sticks her neck in trouble, obviously eveyone's going to help her, that's how friends work.

Sorry, I should have said foster child. Inashi is a foster child of Koya's. She found him when he was little. He was half-starved and beaten and bruised. She took him in and both her and Niska raised and trained him.

I have raised his age to 23.

Alright, late night typos mostly fixed, gear, appearance and personality added, looks like I'm good to go.

AC16 (+4 Armor, +2 Dex)
Abilities Str 9, Dex 14, Con 10, Int 12, Wis 8, Cha 20
Condition None

Appearance:
Despite having some clearly varisian features, Irissa is very obviously of mixed descent. She is much shorter than average, being just a notch over five feet tall, and is unusually slim and graceful, especially for somone that curvy. Combined with relatively pale complexion, slightly pointed ears and delicate beauty it's not hard to guess her ancestry.

While she has some sensible travelling clothing in green and brown, typically Irissa wears variants of a traditional varisian outfit - a short, often sleevless blouse, loose trousers, a scarf tied around her waist and sandals or cloth shoes, usually in various shades of blue. Sometimes, especially when working at the inn, she'd experiment with a southern style dress, except shockingly skimpy by chelaxian or taldane standards, somewhat to Ameiko's exasperation.

As of late Irissa has been considering wearing a bright red outfit next time she'll be dancing at the Rusty Dragon, although she's uncertain if Shalelu and Ameiko would approve.

Personality:
Like many other descendants of the fey Irissa is wildly emotional. Having struggled with that when she was younger, she has since learned to maintain optimistic and carefree outlook, freely enjoying all the nicer things in life and accepting hardships with good humour. As a downside, she can be pretty flippant and dismiss important matters. It would take something quite serious to truly upset her, but should such a thing happen, she will hold a massive grudge, seeking to harm the source of her ire through any means possible.

Irissa greatly enjoys attention. Adoration of the crowd or more personal interactions with her friends never fail to leave her in a pleased, giddy mood. She is somewhat succeptible to flattery and likes to be pampered. The latter is occasionally used to great effect by Shalelu when she wants to smoothly derail one of her ward's more outlandish impulses.

Lastly, the connections.

- Calder Brandson - I'm guessing Sandru's caravan members would be welcome guests at the Dragon. It'd stand to reason that between the rush of extra clients and said clients being valued regulars Ameiko would draft extra hands and break out the best service, meaning that Irissa would be present either as a serving girl or as entertainer and get to meet with the travellers, in particular sticking around to chat with the more exotic and accomplished ones. Presumably, Calder qualifies and would be pleasant enough company.

- Inashi Strama - Koya's being a skilled medic and well-known community member in general, I'd expect Irissa to visit on personal business or with an errand from time to time. Business relationship aside, they'd be friendly enough, I reckon, but Inashi seems a bit too pious to have much in the way of common interests, so Irissa would likely feel awkward and excuse herself before too long.

Thanks for choosing me Tavarokk.

Even though he's resigned from Sandru's caravan Calder takes pride in being professional. So when in a tavern, especially one owned by someone important to Sandru, Calder is always polite and easy going.

Irissa Fiore. - Calder enjoys chatting with the young girl, finding it ironical that he's moving into what could be taken as an older and wiser age group when compared to Irissa.

He worries about her youth and impulsiveness, particularly with such a long, dangerous journey ahead. Hoping she will keep that enthusiasm as she grows in experience. Despite her looks Calder feels akin to an older brother with Irissa.

Kara Reinhart. - Calder has met Kara several times during his travels through Varisia. He finds her a kindred spirit, like Kara Calder seeks danger and adventure.

Her desire to become a great hero is something he finds admirable, Kara is one of the reasons Calder resigned from Sandru's caravan to become an adventurer. He is delighted to find Kara hoping to join the expedition, working with someone who has given him the spark to begin his new career as an adventurer would be a fitting way to start he feels.

If you're still taking applicants I'll dot in. Still considering my character options but I'll probably go with either a psychic caster or a paladin. ... maybe the psychic paladin.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The seven questions:

1. What does your character look like? What kinds of clothes do they wear? What weapons and armor do they carry?
Miyuki wears soft deerskin shirt with with golden stitchings and mink lining and a leather kilt, with supply walking boots. Around her belly is a silken belt with some coins worked in it for protection. Stuck in it is a simple single-edged dagger with wodden hilt and on her back a hardwood crossbow.
If just in her underwear, one can see a pure white hare sitting on a lotus leaf and a reed whirling around tattood on her skin.
2. How is your character acquainted with Ameiko Kaijitsu? Why would he care about traveling with her across the world?
Miyuki knows Ameiko and loves to listen to her songs, they booth know each other and share the same tattoo artist, but it is someone else she would follow across the world. She fancies Sandru.
3. Alternately, is there another reason they want to join the caravan? Perhaps they just want to travel to a faraway land, or perhaps they're from Minkai and wish to see its rightful ruler reinstated.
Miyuki is from Minkai and would love to see the land of her ancestors. But in the last months she felt wanderlust, the understanding that she needs to see more of the world, to gain experience, to find answers to questions not yet asked.
4. How did they become whatever class they are? Were they trained? Did it come to them magically one day?
Her powers are a combination of a prank done to a fey lord, who was so impressed by her ancestor that he blessed them, her Kitsune heritage and her believe in the teachings of the empyrial lord Korada. So while in her heart she is strong in Enchantments, her mind follow the transmutation path.
5. What is your character like? How do they treat people?
Miyuki is a prankster at heart, but rarely does so, only with people she likes. She knows she is a shapeshanger and is weary to offer that secret. On the other hand she is complementiv.
6. Why is your character whatever alignment they are? Explain what their own ideas of ethics or morality mean to them.
Seek to aid others and you will be aided. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Magic is a tool, but shall be used to help others.
7. If you have a character with a Code, like a paladin, be explicit about what that Code means.
No Code.

Relationship:

Alex Zaven:
Miyuki likes the young boy and understands his feelings of unanswered love to someone just too well. She is always willing to grace him with a smile or a kind word, encouraging him, not knowing if it makes it easier or harder for him.
Kara Reinhart
Miyuki defers to Kara, as she has a much stronger connection to her race. She understands her curse and tries with Tien mentality to ignore it, although she knows that it hurts her kin. She understands that Kara is meant for greatness, and knows if she stays close she might one day help her achieve it.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I'm still interested. I had thrown my hat in the ring of another Jade Regent PbP before I saw this recruitment. I'm waiting to hear on that one before I put in an offical application here. The answer should come soon.

I would be applying with a human sorcerer with the elemental bloodline. This game looks like it will be super fun.

So i need one more person to coordinate with if anyone's interested

but for now here's one

Calder Brandson

Calder is one of the first people Kara met upon joining the world outside her families compound. He is one of the few people to not immediately associate her with her family. Kara enjoy's his company as the two seem to share similar beliefs and goals.

I'm working on a character... Likely Investigator (Psychic Detective).

GM:
I'm working on a character that developed a psychic bond to the spirits of Lonjiku and Tsuto (I got the idea from a player in one of my previous game who was trained in martial arts by the ghost of Tsuto), then with others, more remote spirits of the same family. The character is possibly a member of this family, but he never got confirmation.

Unfortunately, I've had something come up that's going to preclude me taking another PbP right now, so I'm going to withdraw my application from the game. Good luck to everyone!

Can I stalk this story line? Sounds awesome...just don't have any 4th level characters or time to put one together...but would love to read and follow along!

Grand Lodge

When are submissions due?

I can make a character I have done up already to 4th and rejig a few things.

Dreaming Warforged, that's a cool concept, I look forward to hire you write it up.

Leinathan, I'm working on a gnomish alchemist. Starting age would be between 50-90 years old, which makes some of the traits a bit odd chronologically. Could I take Younger Sibling for Kora? As written it's for Ameiko, Sandru, or Shalelu...but I'm older than at least the first two. My thought is that my young gnome was the child of a Magnimar confectioner that Niska did business with. When the young gnome's parents were slain in the Irespan shreizyx outbreak of 4623, Niska happened to be in town. She adopted the young gnome and patiently raised her beside Kora (though of course the human daughter came of age far faster). When Niska helped to found Sandpoint, she brought both her biological and adopted daughters with her.

If that works, do you have an opinion on which Save Kora/Niska would give a bonus to? I'm thinking Will for the Seer & Cleric, but happy to go with whatever you think.

Thanks.

Submissions are due by the 6th. So you've all got a couple days to be sure.

@gyrfalcon - Sure, you can take Younger Sibling for Koya. Though only if you're actually younger than her. And yeah, Will makes sense for her. Sounds like a fun concept, I'm excited to see it realized.

Oh, no I was just sorta waiting for you to be done. So, if I understand correctly the idea is that Rae went with Ameiko when she went to Magnimar. Did she strike out adventuring like Ameiko did?

And then Ameiko went...back to Sandpoint for her mother's funeral, and stayed there instead of moving back to Magnimar. Has Rae just been living in Magnimar for the last ten years? How did they get back in contact?

My primary question involves Amaya - would Nik'olo have ever told Ameiko about her? And what would have stopped Ameiko from going to establish contact with her sister?

My second question is: What is it that makes Nik'olo "Good"?

- - - - -

I've gotten to the point where there's enough applications for me to pick a party if I wanted to, but I'll wait and allow those who have expressed interest to apply if they're going to.

And, to update the roster, we have:

Calder Brandson, an Ulfen fighter

Kara Reinhardt, a kitsune Battle oracle

Alex Zaven, a human aetherkineticist

Kroob, a goblin crossbowman fighter

Inashi Strama, a human Varisian Pilgrim cleric of Desna

Irissa Fiore, a human fey-blooded sorcerer

Matsu Miyuki, a kitsune fey-blooded sorcerer

Rae Keisinger, a human inspired blade/psychic detective

Nik'olo Gaczi, a human inspired blade/psychic detective

Are you still interested in completely new submissions, or would you want to keep it limited to those that have expressed interest? I have a character concept I whipped up for PFS that might be fun to tweak for Jade Regent, but I don't want to step on any toes. :)

Answer to your questions:

I've added the following parts to my profile. I hope they answer your questions.

Nik'olo is aware that Ameiko knows her sister, if only vaguely, as they corresponded through letters. However, he's never told her of his past relationship with her half-sister. He wonders if Sandru did.

Raised mostly by the street and a witness to oppression, Nik'olo was nevertheless mainly influenced by his mother's generosity and the chivalrous tales in the books she fed him. As a result, he grew up in reaction to oppression. He never wanted to be like the ones who would prey on the weakest, making use of the law or otherwise, and became fast friend with those who would defend the weakest or speak for them.

What makes him good, if somehow ruthless, is that he fights oppression. Sure, he cares about his honour and pride, but deep down, he knows he is playing a character. What makes him tick, what drives him to excellence, is when he gets a chance to fight for the oppressed and to feel like he is building a better world.

Answers:
Good questions!

Yeah, so they move to Magnimar for a year or so together, and when the mother dies / is killed, Ameiko chooses to go back "briefly". Because of travel times (they were quite poor, so I imagine it took a bit) and knowing Ameiko would have to get her mother's affairs in order, I think Rae knew it would be a while before she came back. Several months, most likely.

What she didn't expect was that Ameiko wouldn't be coming back.

I think it probably would have been close to a year before she got a letter from Ameiko saying that she wasn't coming back to Magnimar (still a while before Ameiko decided to go adventuring). And at that point, I think Rae just didn't know where else to go. Because of Ameiko's father (and that Ameiko didn't ask), she couldn't really go back to Sandpoint with her, so she stayed.

I think she may have done a bit of adventuring outside, but probably minor things, and not far. I think there's a degree of trust that you have to have for people you adventure with that she wouldn't, with everything she'd been through. I also think that Ameiko was the stronger one between the two of them (though recent years have certainly hardened Rae more)

There are people she's on good terms with, but going adventuring means putting your life in the hands of others. I think she's largely been working solo in the Underbridge area of Magnimar. (I don't know if the events of Rise of the Runelords have happened in our timeline, but I like to think that if they did, Rae would have been a help to the PCs when they came to Magnimar. Maybe at Ameiko's mention, maybe not.)

I think, too, that with Ameiko's impending trip, and what happened in the past to make her give up adventuring, that she'll also recognise the importance of having people around that you can trust, and that she'll reach out to Rae by letter saying, you know, I know things between us still aren't great and it's my fault, but I need you.

Are you still interested in completely new submissions, or would you want to keep it limited to those that have expressed interest? I have a character concept I whipped up for PFS that might be fun to tweak for Jade Regent, but I don't want to step on any toes. :)

If you can do it within a day or two and want to fill a niche that hasn't already been done, then go ahead ;)

OK, gyrfalcon here submitting Clarabibulus Flingflopsparkfizz, adopted sister of Koya and a gnomish alchemist. Backstory is complete. Crunch is 90% done (in profile). Her fluff is there in the profile as well but I'm pasting it here for ease. Will post later with connections.

Background:
The Flingflopsparkfizz clan got their illustrious name in the bygone Age of Destiny when great-great-great-grandpoppa Umbilicus first brewed the Ultimate Fizzy Drink. Umbilicus was bold and clever, and family lore tells that he often adventured side-by-side with Nivi Rhombodazzle before she ascended to godhood, but the most glowing stories always return to his fabled fizzypops. There's some debate in the family as to whether the Ultimate Fizzy Drink was best enjoyed as a beverage or thrown at one's foes, but all agree that it was zesty, uplifting, and very very fizzy.

Tragically, the original recipe for the Ultimate Fizzy Drink was lost during the Tarrasasque invasion of -632 AR. Since then the Flingflopsparkfizz clan has worked frenetically -- but fruitlessly -- to try to replicate it. Her parents Guplibcriggit and Fess continued the family quest while operating a confectionary in Magnimar, specializing in unusual sweets and fizzy drinks. When Niska Mvashti came to their shop one day for a treat for her toddler Koya, Fess and she got to talking. Minutes turned to hours, and eventually they were cooking the Desnan seer dinner and seeking her counsel in their efforts to rediscover the recipe to the ultimate fizzy drink. From that day on they were fast friends.

One afternoon as Clara's parents scoured the markets of Magnimar for exotic ingredients for their confectionary (and reagents for their alchemical experiments), they met an untimely end in the mandibles of a dreaded spider-like shriezyx that escaped the cracked foundations of the Irespire. As she did a couple days a week, Niska was caring for four year old Clarabibulus along with her own five year old Koya while her friends worked. When nightfall came and the Flingflopsparkfizzes had yet to return, Niska began to worry. The seer consulted the Song of the Spheres and was able to locate their grizzly remains...but it was far too late for her to save her friends Guplibcriggit and Fess.

Knowing that the couple had no family in Magnimar, Niska adopted the wide-eyed gnomish girl as her own. When she felt called to help found the town of Sandpoint a few years later, she brought her daughters (one biological and the other adopted) with her, and so Clara has been in Sandpoint since its first days...but (as is the way with gnomes) has only recently come of age. Koya, who is only a year older than the gnome but who grew up as fast as all humans seem to, transitioned gradually from playmate to more of an auntie role. Meanwhile the little gnome continued to play with joyful abandon, amused by her sister growing up and adopting a son of her own, Sandru. When Clara showed a predilection for alchemy, Niska sent her to Magnimar for an apprenticeship.

Clara returned home to Sandpoint when she heard Niska was ill, so when her adoptive mother passed to the Boneyard the sisters were able to mourn their mother together. Later, when helping Koya to go through Niska’s belongings, they discovered a folio with tattered scraps of Umbilicus’s journals and notes..with scribbled additions from countless generations in the margins, trying vainly to fill in the gaps. For the last few week’s she’s poured over them. Too many sentences end as burnt, stained, or ripped fragments...but Clara has found several references that she suspects might be to the flora and fauna of Tian Xa!

Clarabibulus has decided that her own parents has gone about their Great Quest all wrong: staying at home, trying recipe after recipe. Great-grandpoppa Umbilicus had adventured beside Nivi herself, and had clearly found interesting ingredients to add to his soda pop in the wild reaches of Golarion.

Clarabibulus is going to succeed where previous generations have fallen flat. She's on a quest to discover the legendary missing ingredients and create a new recipe to brew the Ultimate Fizzy Drink.

When she hears about a chance to travel over the Crown of the World to the continent of Tian Xa--accompanied by her sister as well as several tougher members of the Sandpoint community--she jumps at the chance!

Appearance:
At 3’ tall and 34 lbs, Clara is slight even for a gnome. Her hair, eyes, and skin color tend to change weekly--likely based on what the latests barks, minerals, fruits, reagents, and other ingredients she’s been experimenting on herself with. This week, her skin is a light milky blue, her eyes are pine green, and her hair is a fiery yellow-orange. However her own coloration shifts, her stained and sticky apron--and the various vials at her belt--are an easy giveaway of her passion for alchemy.

Under her thick leather apron she wears a mithral chain shirt. The main weapons she carries are her fizzy bombs, but she has also packed a dagger and a light crossbow for the caravan. In combat she wears a steel masterwork buckler.

Driving forces:

Clara has a clear mission: to reinvent the legendary recipe for great-great-great-grandpoppa Umbilicus' Ultimate Fizzy Drink. I don’t have any idea if what the mechanical form of this would be (if any) and expect it to be something that would take a long time to complete (if ever). Along the way I imagine plenty of hooks, from the promise of finding other scraps of great-grandpoppa Umbilicus’ mostly destroyed notes, to searching out rare and unusual ingredients.

DM Questions:
1. What does your character look like? What kinds of clothes do they wear? What weapons and armor do they carry?
See Appearance section, above.

2. How is your character acquainted with Ameiko Kaijitsu? Why would he care about traveling with her across the world?
3. Alternately, is there another reason they want to join the caravan? Perhaps they just want to travel to a faraway land, or perhaps they're from Minkai and wish to see its rightful ruler reinstated.

As Niska’s adoptive daughter, Clara had been in Sandpoint since it was first founded. Clara has always appreciated Ameiko's irreverent humor...but Clara’s two main motivators for this are: (1) She enjoys the thought of adventuring beside her sister Koya...and (2) perhaps most importantly, she wants to complete her own family’s quest. While reading through her great-great grandpappy Umbilicus’s notes (that she and Koya unearthed in Niska’s personal effects), she’s discovered clues that Umbilicus likely spent several years in Tian Xa, and Clara suspect that ingredients or reagents there might be the missing link to the ultimate fizzy drink.

4. How did they become whatever class they are? Were they trained? Did it come to them magically one day?
Clara comes from a long line of alchemists. While her parents died when she was less than 10 years old, she still remembers the sounds and smells of their lab...and Niska has raised her on stories she heard from Clara’s parents, Fess and Guplibcriggit Flingflopsparkfizz. When Clara came of age, her passion for alchemy was obvious and Niska graciously sent the young gnome to apprentice in Magnimar.

5. What is your character like? How do they treat people?
Clara is good hearted and a bit naive. Not yet sixty years old, she’s still full of youthful enthusiasm and passion. Despite Niska and Koya’s loving attention, Clara still commonly misunderstands non-gnomes. She tends to think of her adoptive parent and sister as honorary gnomes (not like those other humans). She bears no malice for non-gnomes...but does have a bit of pity for them, wondering how they make it through life without the benefit of a gnomish sense of humor and a community of pranksters around them. Clara does her best to provide those benefits--as well as the benefit of fizzy pop--to those she knows and loves.

6. Why is your character whatever alignment they are? Explain what their own ideas of ethics or morality mean to them.
7. If you have a character with a Code, like a paladin, be explicit about what that Code means.

Clara has a firm sense of right and wrong, instilled by her parents and reinforced in Niska’s loving home. She doesn’t quite understand laws and rules, and when she bothers to remember them it’s mostly in amusement. Chaotic Good for her isn’t about rebelling against or rejecting law & order...she just rarely remembers that such things even exist for people.

that is possibly the most gnomey name i have ever seen congrats!

It's CariMac. Here's my submission. There are several sorcerers in the applicant in the pool already so I changed to bard. Presenting Lily Goodbarrel hafling bard.

Here are the answers to the questions you asked. They are also in the profile.

Answers for the GM:

Lily is happy to tell you she's a gorgeous example of halfling womanhood. She has luxurious dark brown hair that she keeps pulled back. It's easier to see her lovely face and sparkling green eyes. She prefers bronze and green clothing, because she looks fabulous in those colors. She wears well made clothing when in town, and bronze and green armor when adventuring. She carries a shortbow. That is her main weapon. She doesn't expect to do a whole lot of damage to an enemy with it. She has other skills she falls back on. She also has a rapier and a dark looking mace on her belt.
She is a bard She tells stories for coin, and attention. She'd spend every evening she's a town in one of the inns or taverns The food is good in the Rusty Dragon so she spends most of her time there while in Sandpoint.

She likes Ameiko. She looks up to her a little bit for running her own inn so well. She'd tag along on the adventure, because adventure. It's a chance to learn new stories, and have a grand time. That opportunity can't be passed up.

She's 26 years old, and hasn't been on her own for long. She's from a halfling complex not far from Sandpoint. Her great grandfather is a great hafling bard. She learned the beginnings of her profession from him. She wants to make a name for herself as a fine bard. When she arrived in Sandpoint she took a job as a caravan guard with Sandru. Three trips was enough for her. She'd rather sit in an inn, and tell stories of adventure. She doesn't want not tell stories of standing watch and nothing happening. She learned some things while on the caravan, but Lily is sure that adventure is where it's at.

Lily treats people fairly well, but isn't above taking advantage of a situation when the chance arises. It's all in good fun of course. For example there isn't a thing wrong with playing dice with a drunken jerk, and taking all his gold. She's likely to give the same gold to his long-suffering wife with a message from his mistress just to stir the pot. She'll tell the story the next night at the inn. The names were changed to protect the innocent of course.

She's chaotic good. She likes too see the best in situations. She sees no problem with taking advantage of mean or evil people. She won't make fun or take advantage of a child or a widow, and is likely to give them something of value just to make their lives easier. If someone has a lot, she's probably help herself to some of their things. If she's caught, she'll explain they they don't really need said item anyway.

She doesn't have a code per se. There's a soft spot in her heart for freed or escaped slaves. Her beloved grandfather is a former slave himself. Slavers are an issue for her. She'll go out of her way to make them miserable.

I'll review for relationships to the other applicants shortly, and create a separate post.

Here are the connections.

Nik'olo Gaczi: Lily wouldn't have known him from her time on the caravan he stopped going on the caravan before she ever started her sort career. She met him at the Rusty Dragon before her first trip. After that first caravan trip when she almost died of boredom, she discovered they had the profession in common. She asked him for advice on how to be a good caravan guard, and for any stories he had she could tell. He may find her a nuance with the story requests. He looks like he's got good ones to tell, and she wants to tell them.

Irissa: Lily met Irissa in the Rusty Dragon. She came in looking for a chance to entertain, and for a place to stay. Irissa is interested in illusion magic, and a bard is always interested in creating illusions of one kind or another. She can see that Irissa enjoys her work at the Dragon, and since she enjoys her work very much they have that in common.

I'm not familiar with the first book of the AP. I can't add any details of that would involve that story to my relationships or my background.

Silver Crusade

I have a Kitsune Rogue I built for Jade Regent a while back. Just let me get her updated to your standards.

Here is FedoraFerret's application, Qale of the Tome, the Shoanti half-orc wizard/fighter (eventually Eldritch Knight).

Fluff Questions:
Qale is a tall, muscular bald man with olive green skin and rather noticeable tusks. His clothes are a simple belted tunic and trousers, and he wears no armor, instead trusting his magic to keep him safe. His spellbook and other possessions are kept in a satchel he carries with him everywhere, and at his back, he has a wickedly sharp double axe, as well as a longsword he keeps at his side. He wears a tattered red cloak around his shoulders and a white pearl around his neck that used to belong to his father, and his tunic does nothing to hide the orcish word for "guardian" tattooed on his forearm in dark red.

Since moving to Sandpoint, Qale has come to respect Ameiko as a fighter and spellcaster. If he believed her in need of assistance, he would offer his services if for no other reason than out of respect, particularly if she truly has been denied what is rightfully hers.

That, and the prospect of coin and travel to a far off land are particularly enticing.

Qale was trained by his tribe to be a warrior for his people, and learned the arts of martial combat from them. He learned magic from a year of apprenticeship under his elderly orc father.

He shows others the respect they've earned, or in lieu of knowing what they've done in their lives, a minimum amount of decency. He chooses the honorable path whenever possible, and does not take lives unless necessary to protect others, or in a fair duel.

It's late and I'm gonna hit the hay, so I'll hit people up to see if they wants to partner up for the second challenge bit tomorrow, but if anyone else does hit me up.

Silver Crusade

I'll try get mine finished.. just updating to level 4.. but don't wait up.

Here is MattZ's submission.

BACKSTORY STUFF
Riko's parents settled in Sandpoint when she was an infant. Growing up the only child of her species left her emotionally detached from others in the community. She learned to manipulate people and rely on her racial magic to survive. Recently, she fell in with some of the rougher elements of Sandpoint. Fortunately, Sandru Vhiski took her under his wing, teaching her swordplay and steering her away from involvement with the Sczarni. Sandru is the first real friend Riku has ever had. Though her feelings for him aren't romantic(he is almost old enough to be her father), who knows what the future may bring?

1. What does your character look like? What kinds of clothes do they wear? What weapons and armor do they carry?
In human form, Riko appears to be a young Tien woman. In Kitsune form, she has a red coat with black gloves. She dresses in a Varisian style, and wields an old rapier that Sandru gave her.
2. How is your character acquainted with Ameiko Kaijitsu? Why would she care about traveling with her across the world?
She doesn't really care one way or another about Ameiko personally.
3. Alternately, is there another reason they want to join the caravan?
Sandru is going on the expedition, and she would follow him anywhere.
4. How did they become whatever class they are? Were they trained? Did it come to them magically one day?
Deceptiveness comes naturally to her, and it has served her well in the past. She has worked with some very shady individuals, and has picked up many of their skills.
Her racial magic is something she stumbled across on her own, and she has grown two extra tails already.
5. What is your character like? How do they treat people?
She is sly and manipulative, not typically seeking to grow a personal relationship. Sandru's influence, however, is helping her become more open and genuine.
6. Why is your character whatever alignment they are? Explain what their own ideas of ethics or morality mean to them.
"Doing the Right Thing" hasn't ever been rewarded in her past. Not until recently. Rules only hold her back, in her mind at least. She doesn't go out of her way to hurt others though.

Tharasiph Here presenting my Hydrokineticist Hobgoblin Hykan the Traveller

He can blast and Heal and sneak. Everything should be in the Alias.

Relationships

Qale and Kroob have met once or twice, after Qale sought him out to confirm the stories of a civilized goblin. He respects Kroob for having the courage and honor to help someone who should by all rights be a sworn enemy, and associate with people who inherently hate his kind.

He and Inashi know each other in passing as well, and Qale considers his traditional values and beliefs to be a breath of fresh air in a more modern society than he's used to.

I know it's a last minute entry, but I thought I would throw this in just for kicks. I know I still don't have the equipment cleared, but I'll get to that as soon as possible. Hopefully tonight at the latest.

Meet Kikiri Shadowscale, the last of his tribe, former mascot of the Rusty Dragon and dedicated "kirin" to the Kaijitsu family (...which at this moment is just Ameiko, but... hey, she might have kids one day!)

Alright, I'm declaring that recruitment is closed. I don't want any new submissions.

I'll compile some questions for the newest batch of applications, and y'all have 24 hours to finish up whatever it is you haven't finished yet. Then, I'm giving myself 24 hours to pick a group.

I might have to take on an additional person. This turned out to be a pretty good recruitment with a pretty good selection of characters.

good luck making a decision, it's the hardest part of recruiting

Alright, it took some thought and I definitely went back on a couple of my choices. And I know I said I'd do another round of questions and give another day, but I'm just very impatient. I'm happy to announce the following players as my crew for the Jade Regent:

Calder Brandson, the Ulfen fighter, traveler, survivalist

Rae Kisinger, the detective and loyal best friend

Clarabibulus Flingflopsparkfizz, the gnomish innovator of uplifting sparkling sodas

Irissa Fiore, extroverted feyblooded Varisian sorceress

Kikiri Shadowscale, the draconic scion of a nearly-lost Tian tribe

I'll just go open up a Discussion thread now. I'm sorry to those that I didn't pick. There were a lot of good submissions, but ultimately I only have so many slots, you know? Thank you all for all the effort you put in!

dang it, oh well have fun guys

A lot of very interesting and engaging characters come out for this.

Glad I made it and my sympathy for those who didn't.

Congratulations to all who made it. Have fun gaming.

Wait, I made it? OMG, I MADE IT! WOO-HOO!

I mean, erm... thanks for picking me! I'm kinda surprised I made it through so many tough apps! Looking forward to things!
