Upon waking and having breakfast- Jan gathers his friends and companions around him.

"Since my marriage... I have been very happy... as happy as any Ulfen can be!"

Jan takes a moment to pull Adula close to him and give her a hearty kiss.

"Now it is the time to bring my new bride home to see my kin. It has been many years since I have to my home village of Hellirinn in the Northern Lands. I am proud of my bride, my sister-in-law and father-in-law and wish for them to see the distant lands of the Ulfen, of which their ancestors originally hailed. Will you ALL come with me as I journey home to introduce Adula to all? There will be celebrations, ceremonies, dedications to the gods and fun for all... Will you... my friends come with me?"

"Of course I'll come with- and I'll bring Denair with me. She'll have a million questions about the plants there. If I'm lucky there will be more fey to identify." She laughs.

"Congratulations, you two."

Brayden spent the celebration in his own mind. He danced with Klara, twirling her around with his arm and laughing along, his face masking his constant, unerring flow of thought. He knew he'd be leaving tomorrow, and it saddened him.

The samsaran awoke to an unusual warmth above his body. He opened his eyes to find Klara's arms cradling his chest, her leg resting atop his own.

How will I tell her?

Brayden doesn't wake her up. He convinces himself it would be rude to. But he knew the truth. He was always leaving, his presence as fleeting as the thoughts he struggled to decipher.

He checked the mirror. Covered himself with a smile. That'll do. It always does.

Klara still sound asleep, he made his way downstairs, loudly and abruptly clearing his throat as he arrived at breakfast. "Well, friends..."

"It's been a pleasure, but I feel I have so much more to learn about myself and my history. With the connections I've formed with you, I feel I've already more insight into what it means to be alive, as an adventurer, and a Pathfinder. However, I need to seek answers. I'd tell you more, but that would mean putting my burden on you. I must go," he pulls on his cloak, "I'm not sure when I'll be back, but know that I could not have chosen better companions to adventure with. And I promise I do not say that to just anyone." His face lights up brightly with a wide, bittersweet smile. "... Congratulations, Jan."

Meredith turns to Brayden.

"I know that feelin'. You wake up, you eat food, you work hard, you eat some more and you go to sleep. You don't know your purpose. Why bother, right?" Meredith tells Brayden and also herself.

"Denair and Frankie have helped me a lot. I still don't know the exact answer. But helping the Centaurs and Mishkar? That... felt good. Exonerating Dragbog? That also felt good. Whatever the answer is, it's over there."

"Good luck out there, Brayden. But don't lose yourself, alright? I almost lost myself. It wasn't pretty." She nods and squeezes his hand. "Find your anchor. She's going to be upset she wasn't yours, you know?"

Meredith watches him leave. He's a damn fool to leave Klara. But I'm also a fool.

Frankie's face lights up when Jan asks them all to come back to his homeland. Traveling to these Northern Lands? Count me in! If Meredith and Denny are going so am I! "Really? Me too? I'd love to go visit. I bet they all want to hear that story of how you escaped from your slave ship too! I could tell it, but maybe you should and I'll add in some action from our end ok?"

He digs into the maple syrup flooded bowl of pancakes with gusto, excited at the news. His excitement is short lived though thanks to Brayden's declaration. "Wha? You aren't coming with us? Why? I don't understand? Was it me?" Frankie looks shell shocked, hurt, and distraught. He slinks down in his chair and disappears under the table.

How come all the nice men I meet leave me? What did I do? It wasn't Mom this time so it must be me..

Season of Ghosts

After all of you have had a chance to say your goodbyes to Brayden, Dolok approaches the blue warrior and bows his head in respect.

"I know that Nelket and I will never forget what you and the rest of your friends have done for us, our people, and for the inhabitants of Mishkar and the Finadar Forest," the bear-god rumbles. "We know that you have your oath to your Pathfinder Society but you're welcome to travel with us on our journey to Sarkoris or to any point between here and there. And if not, you will always be welcome in our lands."

"As will the rest of you," Nelket smiles, clasping each of your hands. "Don't be strangers, okay?"

Even Dragbog nods, furiously chewing his lower lip and shuffling his feet awkwardly. "Um...Dragbog want to say thanks again for helping Dragonskulls. It fun, kinda, running around with Pathfinder longshanks. Other Dragonskulls hear Dragbog's stories, think it sound fun too. Want to...um...even join, maybe. Think Pathfinder longshanks would take goblins like Dragbog? No have to answer now, think it over, ask Pathfinder bosses maybe."

Nelket chuckles softly. "It sounds like you all might be even busier in the future! But that's not a bad thing, is it?" She glances over her shoulder; the caravan seems ready to go at last. "At any rate, I guess this is where we part ways. Stay safe out there, my friends, until we meet again!"

Season of Ghosts

As the Farheaven caravan - with Nelket, Dolok, Dragbog, a heartbroken Klara and her father Kenner and many of the Dragonskull goblins - sets out from Mishkar and swiftly disappears down the road the rest of you have much to consider. Some of it joyous, such as Jan's invitation to travel with him to his snowy homeland. Some of it bittersweet, such as Brayden's departure. And some of it...surprising. Goblins in the Pathfinder Society? Madness!

But there's still much to do - namely, report back to Venture-Captain Jorsal on everything that's taken place in and around Mishkar. Though sending Frankie's new pet pigeon with a return message is the easiest route, Nerosyan is technically on the way to the Land of the Linnorm Kings...

He asks through some whimpers to Meredith, standing on his tippy toes looking around like he could maybe see it if he was a bit taller.

"Do they have cocoa? I'm out of cocoa..." And candy! He lifts his empty water skin sadly.

Frankie didn't like how things ended. They did some really good things and he was rewarded by his friend leaving. Then Dragbog stayed behind. He didn't even get to tell him how he'd try to convince the big bosses back at the Society to let goblins join too. The little fella slams the ground with his new fancy walking stick and walks along in rare, angry silence.

"Sister Nelket, peace be upon you and your people in your new home. We have learned much during our time with you in this wild land."

Season of Ghosts

The trip out to Nerosyan is quiet and peaceful, a welcome break from the events of the last several weeks. Although Brayden's departure still weighs heavily on some of your minds, there's still plenty of things to find cheer in. Adula chatters away happily, happy to be on the road and eager to see her husband's new homeland, and it's hard not to share in her joy. There's also the prospect of getting back to more 'proper' civilization, at least for a time!

But unfortunately even the best-laid plans can go awry and after reaching Nerosyan and giving report to Venture-Captain Jorsal you're immediately given a new set of marching orders. This time, you'll be traveling almost completely due south of Nerosyan and Mendev, down into the River Kingdoms to the town of Tymon. Although the exact nature of this new assignment isn't clear you're instructed to meet with one Venture-Captain Smine, who can be found at Smine's Weaponworks.

For her part, Adula takes the change in plans in stride and offers a shrug and apologetic smile to Jan. "Sorry, Ah know you were lookin' forward t' gettin' home fer a spell. But you know Ah'll go wherever you go. We'll get out there t' see yer homeland, one way or another!"

And so with your new orders in hand you change direction and turn to the south, heading down into the lush lands of the River Kingdoms...

Season of Ghosts

Six Seconds to Midnight

The incessant beat of hammer against anvils and weaponry greets entrants into Smine’s Weaponworks, a smithy of great repute in the town of Tymon in the River Kingdoms, along with an oppressive wave of heat and the acrid smell of coal. A broad-shouldered dwarf, face and arms smudged with soot from the furnaces, smiles broadly, proclaiming in a voice harsh with years of yelling, "Ah! I was expecting you lot! Step inside my office. I have refreshments. Oh, and there's another fellow waiting for you all, sent here from the Grand Lodge."

He beckons all of you inside a cozy office, gesturing at an eclectic assortment of chairs, ranging from an overstuffed chaise to a sparse and undecorated rocking chair. Already waiting is a half-orc with several tattoos, the largest, a black dragon in the center of his back. He wears a full plate and keeps his hair slicked back. A deep scar mars the center of his face, from a corner of his forehead, across his nose to his opposite cheek.

"Here's the rest of them," the dwarf remarks as you all file in. "All the way from Nerosyan, I've been told. All of you settle in, make yourselves at home, take a minute to catch up if you've met before or introduce yourselves if you haven't. I'll be right with you folks in a few minutes and then we can get down to brass tacks!"

He soon stops with the kicking and whacking and walks with a more relaxed pace and gives Denny a bit hug. "Thanks." He quickly smirks and runs off ahead "Tag! You're it!" Seems like he's back to normal.

Frankie heads inside the loud and smelly forge, holding his hands over his ears for a minute until he gets used to the loud noises. His eyes wander for the new sights and his curiosity starts to take hold but he's quickly ushered into the office, still looking over his shoulder with mischief in his eyes. "Oh, ok. Can we have a tour? Or? Ok..."

He frowns as the door closes and the chance to explore the shop disappears, at least for now. Dang, maybe later! Frankie stops in his tracks as he sees the half orc, his little brain churning as he 'thinks' he seems familiar.

If I can beat flaming dragons then I can beat you too! Have at Zav!" He starts to snicker uncontrollably as he works on cutting the man down to his size with a very grungy and sticky looking piece of wood.

When someone finally stops him he drops his axehead to the floor and smiles "Hey Zav! Got any cocoa? I'm out, but maybe this nice Dwarf man can point us to some when we're done here. Are you coming with us? We're one blue man short now that Brayden left... but I guess green is kinda like blue right?"

Frankie smiles and waves at Captain Smine as he climbs up on the biggest chair and takes a seat. "Hey, I'm Frankie the Flash and this is my team of Pathfinders! We're awesome!" He tries to replicate the flex Zav did earlier but its hard to tell if he's actually flexing or just bending his elbow.

Season of Ghosts

After just a few minutes, as promised, the dwarf returns. After rinsing his face in a nearby basin he pours out several glasses of water, immediately quaffing one for himself before refilling it and sitting down at his desk. "Venture-Captain Holgarin Smine, at your service - but I guess you already figured that much out, hah! You lot don’t look too fresh-faced for this mission...well, at least most of you don’t," the dwarf remarks, eyeballing Frankie as he attempts to replicate Zav's flexing. "I swear they’re accepting more and more young ones all the time; at this rate the Society will be making as much a name for themselves babysitting as anything else!"

Finishing the rest of his drink, he wipes the corner of his mouth with a clean cloth. "At any rate, I’ll be quick about it. You’ve got a bit of travel ahead of you. One of the mayors of Uringen, Lady Aurelia Ogden, wants the Society’s help with an experiment she’s been doing. The clock tower of Uringen has drawn all sorts of researchers. It hasn’t worked quite right from the get-go. It makes a whole piece of the town disappear, you see. Four clock faces, each with a different way of counting time, each displaying a different time — until now. The mayor thinks that those faces might finally join up. What’s going to happen when it does is anybody’s guess. She doesn’t have the staff she needs to record it properly. That’s where the Society comes in."

"Uringen’s alchemical goods are some of the best," Smine continues after taking another gulp of water from his glass. "In exchange for recording the experiment’s effects, and dealing with unexpected issues, Mayor Ogden will give the Society a discount. But there’s something else that the Society wants. You heard about the mishap with the Sky Key? How it’s not working correctly?"

Smine waits for a moment, taking in the knowing looks (or blank stares) that you have before continuing. "Turns out, that clock tower might have something that can fix it. Scholars call that something ‘temporal essence.’ Fetch at least one vial of the stuff. Ogden says the best time to collect it is in the middle of the clock face alignment. I’ve arranged for travel to Embeth Forest. When you get there, you’ll be meeting Jamel Visser. Visser’s the leader of the local forest guides. They call themselves the Embeth Travelers. Don’t dawdle. You’ve got to make it to Uringen before the clock faces align. The boat will get you to Visser in a little over 2 weeks if you don’t run into trouble. The clocks align in 3 weeks. Any questions...or refills?"

I was stuck in my room for a whole day before I finally got it to work." He smiles and puts his hand back down and takes a seat again.

Though most of you find the finer details of the briefing sailing smoothly over your heads, there are a few things that can be learned and the Venture-Captain seems happy to oblige you - to the best of his ability.

"Can you say what color this stuff is, or are we supposed to...experiment here?"

Smine shrugs. "Your guess is as good as mine. Might be colorless like water or it might be any color of the rainbow. Heck, it might even be holo. Mayor Ogden might know more about it, though."

Jan wrote:
"Is there anything we should be concerned about? Local bandits, Aspis Agents or a renegade black dragon?... you know... normal stuff?"

"I think there's been some reports of fey activity in the area, come to think of it," Smine remarks, frowning. "Jamel would be the person to talk to about just what sorts of activity. Since, you know, some fey are capricious but otherwise pretty harmless and others ain't so nice."

Frankie wrote:

Another post incoming (as work allows) to cover Jan's knowledge checks as well as all of Laz's post~

Season of Ghosts

As Lazarus explores the rooms of his memory palace, some information does spring to mind regarding the melange of names, places, and things that he's been presented with. Jan too, recalls some details about the region the group will be traveling to...

On Uringen: Details, History, & Legends (Lazarus)

Lazarus recalls that the town of Uringen was founded in 4637 AR by an Ulfen skald named Birji Uringen. The town's alchemists are renowned through the Inner Sea for the effectiveness of their elixirs and potions. The clock tower that stands in the center of Uringen doesn’t tell the same time on all its faces, and one of the faces always spins wildly out of control.

He also remembers that the grig Mather Nithra has made numerous threats on the people of Uringen as well as on travelers through Embeth Forest - this might tie in to what Smine had said about recent fey activity.

On the Sky Key (Lazarus)

The Sky Key is an artifact of Jormurdun, one of the legendary Sky Citadels of the dwarves. It's said that it's actually a long-lost Numerian device said to be capable of projecting a location's past into the present.

On Mayor Aurelia Ogden (Lazarus)

Lazarus has heard of Lady Aurelia Ogden, who represents the 'unstuck' half Uringen and with her advisor Titor Restivo, she also leads work on resolving the town's strange situation. But beyond that, there's little else he knows of her.

On the Embeth Forest (Lazarus & Jan)

Both Lazarus and Jan know quite a bit about the Embeth Forest. It's nestled firmly in the River Kingdoms surrounded by Mivon to the northeast, Pitax to the north, Touvette and Gralton to the west, Hymbria to the south, and Liberthane to the east. No major parts of the Sellen River flow through the dense forest, but creeks and tributaries weave through the region. Embeth Forest lies in a low-lying area featuring stagnant marshes and low hills. The land does not support farming of any sort and the marshy forest is filled with spiteful sprites and dangerous animals. The region is avoided by most travelers but often used as a hidden refuge.

On Jamel Visser & the Embeth Travelers (Lazarus)

Jamel Visser leads a band of rangers called the Embeth Travelers, who make their home in the dense marshy forest. The group made clear its concerns about the dangers of the unstuck Uringen and feel the fey-led raids put the town in serious danger. The group maintains a number of camps throughout the forest, and they make the best guides for those wishing to find the town.

On Notable Flora & Fauna (Jan)

Jan has heard of a plant called nightmoss which grows in towering cypress trees throughout the Embeth Forest. A small number of Uringen residents use their secret formulae to brew the moss into powerful potions aimed at strengthening the body and healing physical conditions.

And much like Venture-Captain Smine mentioned, there are also plenty of fey creatures that call the area such as grigs and even the occasional dryad.

"To your first question, I can't say," Smine sighs. "Mayor Ogden might have others there already helping her with some of the work but considering she's asked us for help, I have my doubts."

Smine refills his water and takes another long drink before continuing, "And to your second question, yes. It's the strangest thing but everything and everyone on that side of the town always seem to reappear none the worse for the wear."

Lazarus shares what he knows with his companions and nods, acknowledging the venture-captain's answers. "I believe cold iron is anathema to fey creatures. It would be wise to equip ourselves with such weapons before we depart. I have a cold iron dagger and a good number of cold iron bolts for my crossbow."

Another couple of question occurs to him. "Will the Lodge provide adequate rations for our journey, or must we purchase those supplies from our own funds? And do the Embeth Travelers value certain forms of payment over others, or will gold suffice? Are there appropriate gifts that would win their favor or be suitable for expressing our gratitude for their service as expert guides?"

The samsaran conducts an efficient series of personal pre-combat checks. "If there's nothing else, I'm prepared to depart at once."

Season of Ghosts

"Well, you're a learned one for sure," Smine remarks, gazing at Lazarus with obvious respect. "Of course some of that I could've told you if you'd asked but you'll never hear me argue against wasting time that doesn't have to be wasted," he chuckles as he takes another drink of water.

"Anyway, to answer the rest of the questions you do have, the Embeth Travelers don't have much use for coin," Smine continues, wiping his mouth with his sleeve. "We’ll be paying him in more useful goods," he grins as he nods toward a collection of weapons hanging from the wall.

"As for the rations and boat fare and such, it's already been paid for so no need for any of you to worry about that. Oh but I'd hold off on buying any alchemical goods until you get to Uringen. No sense wasting your money. Also, don’t go blabbing that you’re with the Society while you’re in Tymon. Locals don’t know about this lodge, you see."

The Venture-Captain looks around at the rest of you, waiting to see if there are any further questions. Assuming that there aren't, he nods decisively. "All right then, I guess that's got everything settled. Make any preparations that you need to make and then get to your boat; it'll be waiting down at the docks. Good luck and keep your wits about you, okay?"

Season of Ghosts

Once everyone is reasonably prepared with cold iron weaponry and cocoa you all hurry down to Tymon's docks to catch your ride. Once aboard there's not much else to do but settle in - it's going to be a long trip along both the West and East Sellen Rivers.

....
.....
......
.......

And a long trip it is, though at least it's peaceful and the scenery is pleasing to look at. True to Venture-Captain Smine's word it takes you about two weeks to reach your destination. You arrive near the edge of the Embeth Forest, where Jamel Visser and his group of Travelers should be waiting to meet you. A sturdy wooden pier stretches over the western bank of the fast-moving river, where a river barge offloads several crates of labeled goods. Nearby, a camp laid out in a rough semicircle bustles with activity, its borders marked off by covered wagons and tarpaulins. Water from a recent downpour collects in the canvas’ folds and in puddles on the ground.

As your vessel glides up to the dock, you notice a pair of men watching the proceedings with the air of searching for something. When they spot your rather eclectic-looking group, they wave to get your attention and beckon you over. After making some brief introductions the two men direct you over towards the nearby camp, to a man standing near the central campfire. You see that he is dressed in plain forester’s garb, as well as a worn but well-kept suit of leather armor and a longbow that hangs across his back. His expression is pensive as he listens to two scouts who seem to be giving report but as he notices your approach he turns to greet you.

"Well met, travelers. Smine sent word of your arrival, expressing the urgency of your journey, but we will have to delay your departure. On our trip here, we ran afoul of that blasted grig’s traps, and we won’t be able to leave until we’ve fixed things up."

"Aye, that'd be me," the man nods, reaching out to shake the blue man's hand. "And I won't lie, a little extra help would be just the thing right about now," Jamel sighs.

"We’ve got a few problems, to be honest. Deadfall, pits, whatever snares those twisted fey assembled, and that’s just the start," he scowls. "They’ll all need to be cleared or disabled as we travel through the woods."

Jamel also looks around the camp and as you follow his gaze you notice that several of his men and even some of the pack animals seem rather sickly. "Our mules are sick, probably poisoned, and even some of our hounds have succumbed, too. If you have any healers among you, I'm sure ours would appreciate some help with treating them."

"Ideally we'll take care of our sick first, before we set out towards Uringen. Once we're on the road is when we'll need some eyes watching for those traps."
______________

You can attempt up to four Heal checks to treat those poisoned by Nithra’s traps. Each Heal check to treat poison will take whoever rolls the check 1 hour, as it represents treating several poisoned people and animals. These checks can all happen at the same time, e.g., if four of you roll Heal checks at the same time then it only takes 1 hour for all four checks.
