Season of Ghosts

After taking a quick detour to Marmaduke's to pick up some alchemical supplies, it's very nearly time for you to take your positions. During your earlier meanderings through the town a couple of you decided that the town's central square, or just off of it, would be the ideal place to set up and this is where you head to now.

Lanterns, torches, and magical lights of every color surround the central square around the Clock Tower, lighting up the night in a festive atmosphere as the metallic embellishments and clock faces catch the light, breaking it into prismatic hues. These hues shimmer and reflect off the fountain at the center of the town square. Many of the residents of 'unstuck' Uringen have gathered outside to watch the spectacle as well and somewhere in the crowd you can hear music playing, likely Seripan and some other fey friends putting on a bit of a concert.

As the appointed hour ticks closer a hush descends over the gathered crowd as three of the faces start to move in time in the final minutes of the day. The arms of the fourth face swing wildly, teetering and tottering according to some unknown rhythm, until its minute arm moves steadily backwards, ticking and clicking in time with the other three faces. At a whisper before the dawn of a new day, all of the faces of the tower suddenly erupt in a vivid violet light, and arcs of blue and red energy strike out into the ground. Ripples in the air twist and bend the light around the tower, splitting and shredding with blue and red energy, forming what look to be small portals.

There's a collective gasp from the assembled crowd...and then a cry goes as several tiny figures suddenly appear around the edges of the square! Two of them appear to be fierce little insectoid creatures with the heads of angry crustaceans, each wielding a tiny, but solid-looking, hammer. Two others seem to be made completely of bundles of sticks wound with thorny vines and vaguely humanoid shaped. Last of all, you see a tiny dragon with gray scales and moth wings. It is this creature that cries, "Now's the time! We'll bring down Reckless Rhona's creation for good!"

Kn. Arcana (DC 14):

The strange-looking dragon is a gloom dragon, an evil, corrupted creature that was once a benevolent faerie dragon.

For every 5 that you beat the DC you may ask one question from this list.

Kn. Nature (DC 13):

The two little stick-creatures are malevolent fey creatures known as twigjacks.

For every 5 that you beat the DC you may ask one question from this list.

Kn. Nature (DC 11):

The angry-headed crab creatures are vexgit gremlins, maniacally destructive little fey.

For every 5 that you beat the DC you may ask one question from this list.

"Woah, check it out, its like a fireworks show or magic show or something!" He jumps to his feet and wipes the sleepies from his eyes as he watches the clock tower and ensuing red and blue portals. His excitement quickly turns to worry as the tiny creatures call on an attack.

"Umm... what are those? They seem mad..." He quickly digs out his buckler and defends himself, just in case.

Season of Ghosts

The center square immediately begins emptying out as startled villagers and fey scatter in all directions. Frankie, unsure of what's happening, hefts his buckler and adopts a defensive position while Yorad pulls out a vial of alchemist fire and waits for an excuse opportunity to use it.

Denair recognizes the little crab-headed creatures as vexgit gremlins, recalling that they posses the usual fey resistance against any weapon that isn't forged from cold iron as well as a respectable resistance to magic.

DR 5/cold iron, SR 12 on the vexgits.

Lazarus, learned man that he is, recognizes each of the party-crashers: vexgits and twigjacks, apparently led by a tiny gloom dragon. While he can't recall anything else about the gloom dragon beyond its name, he knows that twigjacks can be every bit as sneaky and elusive as a rogue when they're in an environment rich with brambles, shrubs, or thickets.

Bramble Jump (Su):

A twigjack can travel short distances between brambles, shrubs, or thickets as if via dimension door as part of a move action. The twigjack must begin and end this movement while in an area of at least light undergrowth. The twigjack can travel in this manner up to 60 feet per day. This movement must be used in 10-foot increments and does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

He recalls the most about the vexgits, however. While they don't have any notable defenses beyond the ones Denair shared or attacks, they are incredibly destructive in regards to machinery, especially when working together.

Speedy Sabotage (Su):

Vexgits are adept at disassembling machinery, reducing even complex devices to trash with shocking speed. When using the Disable Device skill, these gremlins treat all devices as being one category simpler for the purposes of determining how long it takes to use the skill. Thus, difficult devices count as tricky, tricky devices count as simple, and simple devices can be dismantled as a free action.

Wrecking Crew (Su):

A group of up to six vexgits can work together to dismantle a device. This ability functions like the aid another action, but a single vexgit can receive help from up to five other vexgits, granting it up to a +10 bonus on its Disable Device check.

The gloom dragon flicks its head in the direction of the group as the sound of your voices cuts through the frightened and alarmed screams of the other spectators and it smiles a wicked, gleeful smile.

"How about a game of hide-and-seek? I'll hide, you find me...if you can," it giggles before wiggling its tiny claw-hands...and vanishing.

Spellcraft (DC 19):

Greater Invisibility.

Green Twigjack darts forward from around the corner but instead of charging at Frankie it instead steps into a nearby Blue Portal...and then a rather odd, sluggish movement is heard from around a much closer corner. Meanwhile, Cyan Twigjack practically leaps into the Red Portal in front of him...and suddenly erupts from the nearby Blue Portal that the first twigjack had stepped into! It races towards Frankie with an almost unnatural burst of speed, uttering a shrill warcry before suddenly spewing a barrage of splinters from its body! Frankie, Meredith, and Denair all suffer as the bits of wood dig into their flesh...

Splinterspray: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 6, 1) = 17

Frankie, Meredith, Denair need to make a DC 14 Reflex to reduce this to half-damage (or none, in Frankie's case).

While Meredith manages to duck the worst of the splinterspray Denair isn't so lucky, emerging looking more like the world's largest porcupine than her usual self. The pair move quickly to retaliate, moving to flank Cyan Twigjack and bring it down. Meredith's cold iron spear easily pierces the tiny creature, leaving it cracked and splintered, but Denair's strike just barely whiffs over its head!

Lazarus also responds quickly, attempting to catch the now-invisible gloom dragon in a burst of glitter before it can get far...but the glitter fills the air and falls silently to the ground, covering only the pavement and nearby shrubs.

While the rest of his companions focus on the more immediate threats Jan cries to the heavens for Gozreh's aid, granting himself protection from evil forces for a short time. He then advances a short distance before drawing his bow and firing upon the Purple Vexgit, burying an arrow into the bug-like creature's shoulder! In response, Purple shrieks and chitters in a strange language as it turns and makes a run for it.

"Eek! វារលាក! នេះគឺនៅខាងលើប្រាក់បៀវត្សរបស់ខ្ញុំ!"

Undercommon:

"Eek! It burns! This is above my paygrade!"

On the other hand, Pink doesn't seem at all perturbed by its brethren's flight as it skips through the nearby hedge and makes a beeline for the door of a nearby building. As it skids to a stop it quickly sets to work on dismantling the lock on the door, fingers practically flying as it does so.

Season of Ghosts

Deciding to get a better view of the situation Yorad moves and attempts to scale the wall of a nearby house. It's rather tough going - the walls are fairly smooth - but the corner gutter does provide something to hold on to and he slowly shimmies his way up.

Frankie draws a shiny cold iron dagger of his own and shuffles around Cyan Twigjack like the world's tiniest duelist, waving his dagger in a series of flashy (well, HE thinks they're flashy) maneuvers before attempting to drive it into the creature's back. The twigjack is quicker than it looks, however, and dodges the strike!

As the battle rages on, the sound of the gloom dragon's voice can suddenly be heard much closer to the fray - particularly by Jan and Meredith - as it chants...

"Bah. Glitterdust." Meredith shakes the dust off before it blinds her, but she frowns when Denair is blinded. She's glad Denair and Frankie somehow evaded the splinters.

Meredith sees if Denair managed to defeat the twigjack. "This is your idea of coexistance?"

If the twig is down.:

Meredith casts Shield and hustles toward the Vexgits. "Denair, come on."

Assuming the twigjack is dead, Meredith heads down to meet up with Jan. "I don't know what those things are trying to do, but it can't be good."

Season of Ghosts

Frankie once again manages to come through the barrage of splinters and magic unscathed - and looking fabulous for it. Lazarus also emerges from the gloom dragon's spell looking quite sparkly but isn't quite as quick on avoiding the barrage of splinters that comes from behind him. Still, he's got bigger fish to fry and tries once more to ensnare the gloom dragon with his own magic, conjuring an explosion of light near the southwestern edge of the fountain...

Lazarus SR Check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

...and nothing happens.

*PBBHHHTTT!*

The unmistakable sound of a gloom dragon blowing a raspberry. How rude!

Unfortunately for Denair she isn't quite able to close her eyes in time and gets a face full of glitter, blinding her! She somehow manages to dodge a second barrage of splinters and lashes out in the general direction of the Cyan Twigjack, but fails to connect. On the bright side, the force of her missed swing does dislodge the glitter in her eyes! Meredith, also covered in glitter now, gives Denair a helping hand and skewers Cyan again with her longspear; this time the creature shrieks loudly with pain as large cracks now appear all across its twiggy body. Though it remains standing it now looks like the smallest of breezes could probably finish it off.

Continuing to trust that his companions can handle the other errant fey Jan fires off another arrow at the vexgits, this time targeting Pink as it works to break into the nearby house. The arrow slams into the door just above Pink's head with a loud *THOCK*, causing the creature to jump with surprise. Deciding that he's had enough of these shenanigans the enormous Ulfen then drops his bow and moves to engage Pink in melee, drawing his axe and shield as he goes.

Pink glances over its shoulder and yelps with alarm as it sees Jan coming! The door to the home now unlocked, it swiftly pulls the door open an slips inside before attempting to push it closed again! Meanwhile Purple continues beating feet and dashes out of the square, heading back towards the forest.

Season of Ghosts

From his position up on the roof Yorad has absolutely no problem at all beaning Green Twigjack upside the head with his vial of alchemist's fire. The bottle smashes, covering the fey creature in fluids that immediately ignite upon contact with the air! Green begins screaming in agony as the flames lick at its body and it seems, much to Yorad's satisfaction, that the fire is proving especially effective!

Down below, Frankie attempts to 'banish' the Cyan Twigjack back to where it came from...and does so! His dagger neatly slips past one of the creature's arms and sinks deeply into its wooden body; Cyan utters one last shriek and collapses to the ground, still. Then, curious as to the exact nature of the portals, Frankie casually steps into the nearby red one...

Frankie:

As you step into the portal you feel a strange tingling sensation as your body seems to speed up! But there's also a chaotic mass of colors and light all around and you feel pulled at random in many different directions all at once...

Behind the Scenes:

GD Stealth: 1d20 + 40 ⇒ (8) + 40 = 48

Both Meredith and Denair reach the same conclusion that the gloom dragon presents the biggest threat on the field and move towards the general area where they've been hearing the spellcasting. While Denair isn't able to pinpoint the exact spot that the gloom dragon is in, she's confident that they're heading in the right direction and that their quarry hasn't flitted away to another part of the square - yet.

Lazarus fires a missile barrage into the remaining twigjack, eliciting another yelp of pain, while Jan deftly steps away from the rolling ball of fire and pursues the Pink Vexgit into the nearby building. And strangely enough, Frankie suddenly pops out of one of the blue portals on the southeastern side of the square, putting him ahead of Meredith and Denair and close to where he'd last heard the gloom dragon casting from.

Pursued into the house with nowhere else to go, all the Pink Vexgit can do is attempt to defend itself. It steps forward to face Jan (triggering an AoO by moving into his square) and of all things, tries to grab for his axe (assuming Jan doesn't end him with the AoO)...

Jan easily cuts down the Pink Vexgit before it even has a chance to squeak, his bloodcurdling battle cry reverberating across the town square.

Back outside, Yorad deftly and rather impressively takes a leap from the rooftop and lands next to the twigjack.
