Well, Mel rolled a 16 on the d20 so that's more than enough to make the Knowledge (local) check.

Despite what happened to William, Melufiuos finds no magical auras on the 'Gates Ajar' collection nor any other book.

I'll wait a bit longer in case one of the other PC's wants to try to investigate the books before moving you all clockwise through the rest of the first floor, unless you just want to move up to the second floor immediately.

Quiella is also unsure what the thin men are.

Ophelia successfully picks up the books from The Gate Ajar without getting burned. It appears to be a set of encyclopedic volumes relating to daemons, demons, or devils. The cleric also finds a marked page that details first contact with an Abyssal entity named “Arastrax”—a shadow demon in whom the owner(s) of these books showed a particular interest. If you consult the books later, you get a +2 competence bonus on Knowledge (planes and religion) checks relating to daemons, demons, or devils. Unfortunately, William cannot touch them so he cannot use them.

If your PC played the Blakros Matrimony in this campaign:

Arastrax was the shadowy creature that attacked the Blakros wedding reception by possessing a guard. He also brought along a dretch. When the guard's body was destroyed, he left the body to return to his true form, a small-sized shadowy bat-winged creature with demonic feature. He scared away Melufiuos and Moadis with some innate ability, then hid in a corner until he just left for some undetermined reason.

Moving south to check all the rooms on the first floor, the group finds a large kitchen with an attached sunken cold room that holds slowly decaying foodstuffs. A stone oven squats in the southern half of the room. Near the oven, a dark well provides the manor’s fresh water. Wooden counters, tables, and barrels make up the rest of the kitchen’s contents. I moved Frostfur into this room temporarily to let you know where it is on the map.

* * *
After searching the kitchen, the group next moves to a ballroom on the west side of the first floor. A scuffed hardwood floor dominates this large recessed chamber. At the room’s far end, a large harp and piano sit neglected, suggesting this room once provided revelry. I moved William into this room to let you know where it is on the map.

* * *
Finishing your exploration of the first floor, you find a door in the west side of the sitting room with stairs leading down.

* * *

Unless you want to do anything in those two rooms, you believe you've seen everything on the first floor, so you have three obvious choices for further movement: A) The stairs going up to the balcony next to the ballroom, B) The stairs going up from the library, or C) The stairs doing down in the sitting room. I've marked the map with those three letters indicating their locations.

Melufiuos finds no traps on the first floor, nor on the way up the stairs. At the top of the spiral staircase, William leads the group to a small antechamber with two chairs. A curtain of pure white linen appears to separate the larger room in two. The curtain is decorated with embroidered images of bone-white doves with berry-stained beaks.

Valik notices a subtle ivory pattern throughout the curtain—an Abyssal rune.

DC 20 Knowledge (planes or religion):

You recognize that the rune represents the demon lord Shax.

You and anyone you tell about this can make another Knowledge (planes or religion) check to recall more information about Shax.

Behind the curtain, a warm carpet, thick curtains, and a four-poster bed decorate the other side of the room, along with three doors. The door on the west wall has a smooth jet surface not unlike the glowing door you saw in the mural in the dining room.

Valik also recalls that Shax appears as a human male with a dove’s head, bird’s legs, and an immense collection of knives and other bloodstained weaponry. His unholy symbol is a curved white feather sitting in a pool of blood.

William finds no secret passages in the balcony area, nor anything else of interest other than the view.

He then move back inside to open up the jet black door, and a hail of arrows rain down on him and Melufiuos from a series of well-hidden small holes in the northwest corner. Both adventurers quickly realize what a pincushion feels like as they are puncture by a number of arrows. William takes 30 damage, while Mel takes 24 damage from the arrows.

With the new damage, William now has 32 total damage, while Mel has 25 total damage. Quiella currently has 10 damage. In subsequent rounds, Quiella will be taking 10 damage from life link in the first round, 10 damage in the second round after that, 10 in the third round, 10 the fourth round, 10 in the fifth after that, and finally 5 in the sixth round, unless those injured are healed up first.

In the back of the closet, William finds a hidden sliding panel. Behind the secret door is a stout ledge that hangs over a shaft descending into darkness. A series of iron rungs attached to the wall serve as a ladder leading down. The exact distance is difficult to measure with normal vision. Are you guys still alive?! as he begins to stop the severe blood loss. Once they are healed he looks in and isn't shocked when William notices the secret shaft heading down.

Let me try, but I'm unsure about the ladder. If the door is trapped, so could the damned ladder

Valik will than drink his Mage Armor potion. He looks the ladder over presuming it is trapped.

My base speed is 50' so 1/2 is 25' = 2 checks. If the 17 makes it I would than use slow fall to negate the other 25' since I think a 9 would fail??

If the 17 stall, the 9 would fail meaning I fall 50 feet. I auto-succeed the acrobatics to negate 10', slow fall negates 30', so total damage is 1d6??

William, you can keep two charges on your wand, no problem.

With the ladder, no climb check needed to go down.

After drinking a potion of Mage Armor, Valik checks the ladder for traps and finds none. He then moves down along with Quiella.

The iron rungs descend from the vertical shaft and continue all the way to the floor, leading into a clear pool filling the bottom 10 feet of the room. The chamber’s walls depict Asmodeus in all manner of triumph. A stone stair rises from the pool to a dais on the room’s eastern end, where several dark robes hang on hooks. An ornate double door in the east wall provides the only visible egress from the chamber. Small glowing red crystals embedded into the ceiling at intervals of between 10 and 20 feet illuminate the area with dim light.

Although he can barely see it, Valik believes there might be a culvert 10 feet underwater leading south.

The map has been updated, the current area is on on the second slide.

assuming the chamber isn't supposed to be flooded, maybe there is a switch to open a drain. If this is someone 's home, I figure they don't want to get their clothes wet

Once he gets the all clear from Valik (in other words, nothing explodes) William will carefully descend and join him and Quiella in the newly exposed passage.

"I have heard tales of powerful weapons kept in the wreckage scattered throughout Numeria... weapons capable of delivering immense blasts from the void of the dark tapestry. Perhaps those would best be employed on this foul den."

He takes care to seal and stow his powder horn before descending into the water, and opts to wield his Numerian stun gun as he moves forward. "Black powder and water do not work well together. These gadgets though have survived thousands of years of wear and still pack a punch. I will admit though... I do love to hear the roar and see the gout of flame from a good old-fashioned musket."

He'll stay behind Valik and Quiella for now, still a bit put-off by the arrow trap.

While the others are climbing down, Halkale puts Frostfur's harness on her, readying her to be lowered to the bottom, while asking Mel to keep an eye on the back trail.

For William: I had a harness fashioned for Frostfur so I could lower or raise her down ladders because..no companion makes me sad. Allowing herself to be lowered or such might require a handle animal check, I would think. I know most everything else we don't worry about it since I've invested training and such on her and my HA skill

Handle Animal: 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 4 = 17 6(ranks)+3(class skill)-2(Charisma bonus)=7 +4 for animal companion.

"Now we're getting to the good stuff." muses the young magus as he works his way down the stairs behind his fellow pin-cushion. If Valik points out the covert, Mel will toss a lightstick in the water near it, hoping to see if there are any creatures hiding within. In addition to the ioun torch around (his or Valik's head), Mel also holds aloft his everburning torch.

Once in the room, Mel again helps Valik look for traps

Also, make sure none of those lights aren't actually eyes.
