Here's what I'm suggesting: Barkot moves to the front (done - token moved). He opens the door (pull or push?), casts spark into the webs, then steps back into the passage. As the webs catch fire, Reillana steps up, scroll at the ready to cast at anything coming at us from the webs or otherwise.

Or is that a bad idea? I just remembered that Reillana can't cast burning hands without a UMD check. I could give out Barkot's alchemist's fire instead?

GM: Are both spiders dead? Not seeing an enemy listed in your last post...

Yes, they are both dead. We will remain in initiative for at least as long as Barkot is poisoned

So we've probably only been in the Irespan for an hour or two, but Con poison is no joke, withdrawing to get a spell cast is probably our best bet.

It might also give us an in-game rationale for recruiting a replacement character for Celia...? GM have you heard from Luckless in the last couple of weeks?

Shattered Star Maps

No, I haven't.

I did have some plans for Celia's character that were going to tug on her Family Ties. If you leave the dungeon now, I will speed up those plans and remove her from the equation.

The party is free to choose how they deal with that absence. Move forward without, recruit an NPC, or recruit a new player.

If recruiting a new player, do we want an open recruitment or an invitation? Think about if any of you have someone you want to invite in.

The thing I love most about this group is the high post rate and reliability of all of the players. I would want that to be a core recruiting point however we go about seeking a replacement.

An AP is a very long undertaking, and I'd really like to make it to the end of this story. Keeping the rate of play high is going to be crucial.

I'm in a Rise of the Runelords campaign that has an amazing bunch of posters, but two of them just got recruited as replacements for an Ironfang Invasion game I'm also in so if the others have anyone they'd like to invite I'd say they should have first dibs.

Recruiting a new player right now from the PbP stacks will be hard. There’s a new GameDay online convention dropping next week and lots of people are trying out their new 2e wings. I think targeted recruitment is a good move. I’d like another player who fits nicely with our group dynamic.

That’s my take anyhow.

So, um, raise your hand if you forgot about the medkit.

Barkot raises his hand.

Oh, look, a scroll of delay poison. Sigh. Anyway, we have two scrolls of lesser restoration. If we aren't ready to go back to town, Barkot could use the scrolls and heal some of the Con damage (each casting cures 1d4 points of ability damage to one attribute). He won't be at full, but depending on the rolls he could get close. We could decide whether to go back to town based on how the scrolls do.

GM, are we ready to level up to 3? That would affect my thinking on whether to go back for the night.

As for whether/how to replace Celia, I could go either way. We have a pretty balanced group of 4 - I'm planning to have Barkot focus his spells on abjuration and divination (a shift, but one that I think makes sense), so I can keep his combat role as a semi-effective tank. Reillana, Paëral, Squint, and Ulyi are all very effective at stabbing, smashing, and shooting things, and when you add the bard and summoner spell lists together you get a pretty versatile set of arcane effects. We're pretty good at most skills, too.

If the consensus is to bring on a fifth player, I wouldn't object. I can think of a couple of possibilities if that's the way we decide to go.

Shattered Star Maps

While you all are thinking about that, we also currently have two votes for continuing as a four player group.

Reillana's post was not a vote against going forward as four. If Reillana and Paeral can vote on that specific question, I'd appreciate it.

From my personal perspective (not as GM), attempting a dungeon crawl without a dedicated damage dealer seems risky, but you guys have been doing better in combat than I have expected so far, so maybe you'll be fine.

Realistically, Celia hasn't been doing that much so far...

If we can find another that can post regularly, I'd rather try to pick up one; but I have no objection to continuing with 4 though if that's what everyone else prefers...

It's just I'm in another AP (Reign of Winter) and if we only had 4 in that one, we wouldn't have made it out of the first book. In the first book alone, we had two killed, two dropped out as they thought the AP was actively trying to kill everyone, and there were several fights where only one or two us were conscious and had to stabilize the other four or five before they died. I don't think this AP has the killer reputation of that one, but if we could find a reliable fifth, it couldn't hurt...

Shattered Star Maps

RoW IS actively trying to kill everyone.

My home campaign of that fizzled but before it did EVERYONE had died at least once. Several multiple times.

It was really hard for any of us to keep interest, especially since we were actively attempting to assist an evil demigod to return to Golarion.

I honestly hated my character by the time we decided to switch to a 5e campaign instead. My home GM is pretty harsh, but still that AP....

For this, I am actively modifying encounters to keep you guys challenged, but not threaten your lives (too much).

That is not to say there won't be issues in the future where a Celia could be quite beneficial, but going down to 4 will change my CR calculations, FWIW

I have a preference for adding a new player, but have no objection to continuing with four.

RoW is going to be the next campaign I GM once the pirate campaign wraps up. It seems clear that terrain is going to be a problem factor, but I have a pretty veteran group so I think they'll be okay.

Reillana has pretty good to-hit but not great damage right now, she could jump into melee to support as well but bards can fill a lot of roles so I've been having her casting & healing mostly so far.

Shattered Star Maps

@Reillana I hear what you are saying about a bard being thrust into a combat role. My Investigator in Ruins of Azlant was planning to be pure support. I had a whole plan of moving down the whip feats, but due to various reasons he is now the secondary damage dealer and I've had to retrain most of his feats to be more useful.

It is fine now, simply different than what I was expecting.

Shattered Star Maps

Two votes for four players and two votes for five. It doesn't sound like anyone has any strong objections either way.

I will say that I prefer a smaller group, as they tend to move faster, but I'm not going to impose any restrictions on the party.

We don't have to rush to a decision. Let's continue talking. If anyone wants to put forth a player as a possibility, that can aid the decision. It is definitely the player that will be the recruiting point and not the character.

By the weekend, we'll make a decision on the short term. If we decide on 4 now, we can always change our mind and bring in a fifth after another level or two in the dungeon.

Shattered Star Maps

Also, the party has access to hiring NPCs (some known, others not) through multiple contacts, if the party simply wants help but we (as a group) don't want to go through the hassle of finding another player.

Squint got a new cantrip (Light) and a new 1st level spell. I'll reveal that when I use it.

Sorry - Sunday and today were more hectic than I expected. We’re on a 900+ mile family road trip to drive our daughter to her first year of college in western Massachusetts.

I should have Barkot’s leveling completed by tomorrow evening. He took Iron Will for his feat, Detect Poison for his cantrip (for obvious reasons), and Shield of Faith for his level 1 spell. I need to finish allocating his skill points; I’m considering putting a point into Craft (Alchemy) because without it, identifying a specific poison is a DC 20 Wisdom check, which is impossible for Barkot to make.

As for equipment purchases, does Squint (or anyone else) want to keep the Pendant of the Souk? Selling it back nets us a lot more gold to split up, but it’s a nifty item and might be worth keeping.

Lesser Restoration cures 1d4 of damage to one ability score per casting at 60gp each. I’m going to roll d4s in the gameplay thread to see how much Barkot has to spend on healing his Con damage to figure out what he has left of his current cash to spend on equipment.

Shattered Star Maps

What is the order of events here?

It sounds like people are splitting up for the rest of the day and then reconvening at the manor to buy and sell, is that correct?
