Harboth peers into the gloom, looking for a spider or a door on the other side:
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Assuming I see nothing more than what our GM just posted:
Damn! There's too much webbing for me to see any door. As Elwyn said, we could always throw a torch in there and see if it clears things out. We'd have to hope it doesn't clear out any more documents, but maybe that Qadiran will be happy with what we've got.
He should be, Harboth mutters to himself.
Harboth takes a tentative step forward across the threshold, axe at the ready.

Fedryn prepares to charge the spider as soon as it shows itself.
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Greataxe, PA & charge: 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 1 = 4
Damage, PA: 1d12 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 = 10

Looks like your right. Let the surprise attack begin!
As the party moves into the long room and begins to look for a way out the giant spider jumps from the southwestern corner of the room, headed straight for Harboth, the man in the front.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Missing on its charge the beast stands its ground in the cramped corridor, facing off against the half Orc.
Ooc: this is a 5' wide corridor for combat. The spider is in front of Harboth. Take that into account when rolling, if you can reach it. It's spider, Harboth, Marisan then who ever. Close quarter combat, shooting past friends. You can get into the webs if you like :)
-4 to shoot into combat.
Round 1:
init - 1d20 ⇒ 15
Atk - 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 crit ? 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Damage - 1d6 ⇒ 6 no crit.
Poison dc: 14 fort based 1d2 str damage for 4 rounds (max -8 str if it hits big over 4 rounds)
Elwyn can attempt a shot, Marisan has reach and Harboth is standing toe to toe.

My perception check was a natural 20. I don't know if we're playing that a natural 20 is always a success here or not. Not a big deal.
initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
If you're saying I can jab at the spider from behind Harboth (tridents aren't reach weapons)...
attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Otherwise, I will use Storm Burst, a ranged touch attack
ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1 and -2 to attacks for 1 round if it hits

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Damage: 1d12 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Fortitude save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Harboth shrugs off the spider's venom, but its mighty strike is enough to make his huge swing miss the mark - narrowly. Only the spider's quick reflexes and 68,000 eyes save it from certain death.
You see that damage roll, right? SEVENTEEN. Would have been like when I stepped on a big cockroach on my porch the other night. Blammo! Who needs Power Attack when I can miss and almost do big damage anyway?

FauxPas75 |

Do I have to use this or can I reroll? I'm awake and at work for the comabt.
Hannya Jubei wrote:Almost going to bed, I'll preroll

In case I have to save just add modifier

Roll your round 2 if u can reach target. Your at least 10 away

FauxPas75 |

Ok, if I'm right combat now looks like this....
Rachel, Elwyn, Marisan, Harboth, spider, Jubei and Fedryn.
Jubei and Harboth get a bonus for having the spider between them (can't remember what the bonus is called, haven't had coffee yet...)
Let's do round 2 and 3 just to be safe.
Atk1 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 Harboth
Atk2 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 Jubei
Well I missed both times....go ahead and kill it :(

Storm Burst, round 2
ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5 plus -2 to attacks for 1 round
Storm Burst, round 3
ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5 plus -2 to attacks for 1 round
Ugh. Hope they kill it in round 2 so I don't burn another channel energy

After Rachel, Elwyn, and Marisan's attacks in round 2:
Harboth yells Hartu gimiz! and takes a desperate swing at the spider, hoping he can outlast it.
Attack (+2 for flanking): 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d12 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
oof. Harboth of the Wild Swing strikes again...or not

In between flights
Elwyn pulls back on the arrow and releases its feathery tale aimed through the melee and squarely at the ugly arachnid.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 - 4 = 6 Due to ranged weapon into melee penalty
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
His shot is wide and zips well over everyone's head getting caught in the webbing behind them.

Fedryn sees little other way to attack the spider other than to attempt to barge through the webbing to get to it.
Strength check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Escape Artist: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Use whichever is most appropriate.
Greataxe, PA: 1d20 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 - 1 = 13
Damage, PA: 1d12 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 2 = 16

Aaaaannddd Magic Missile
[dice=MM] 1d4+1
That's what I was waiting for....
The battle iis fast and bloody, with wounds taken and given on both sides, but it soon becomes evident that schemer numbers will rule the day in this battle of man vs beast as the pony sized spider succumbs to its wounds at last, it's eight lefts shuddering as it squels it's last.

Marisan sees that the ranger is in fairly bad shape. "Here, let me help with that." She begins speaking an incantation to Shimye-Magalla in a low, reverent voice.
Spontaneously cast cure light wounds
hp regained: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Really? Jeez.
That done, she looks around the room. "Let's see if there's anything besides moldering bones amongst the webs."
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

Fort save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Fedryn stumbles slightly as he feels the poison take hold in his blood. He pulls free of the webbing as sweat begins to bead on his forehead.
"Ugh, I fear that beast has poisoned me," he says to the group.

FauxPas75 |

OOC: Jubei what?! you did the bulk of the damage to the thing, 10 points in one hit?!
Fedrwyn, it's 1d2 every round for 4 rounds, just go ahead and roll them all. take the knock in str into account in case we get into another combat round.
Checking through the sticky silk webbing Marisan uncovers the following in a pouch on one of the two dead kobold bodies wrapped in webs. Now that your not concentrating on the spider you also notice a doorway leading to the east near where the spider jumped out from. it's easy enough to remove the webs, but the door is once again stuck due to age and wrapping. (ooc: assume it opens with a dc 15 str check if you want to go through it).
In Pouch:
30 gold (don't bother writing it down, you know the deal)
Pearl (yes it's magical..., again, don't write it on a character sheet).
---
How treasure works for the new players: Everything you find in an adventure can be used for that adventure, however once you get back to the Lodge you hand everything (gold, jewels, magic items) over to the lodge. They in turn give you gold for the items. I will give you a chronicle sheet at the end of each adventure, on this will be a list of items you can purchase in this adventure (things you found, that are now up for sale to each of you). You use your gold to purchase those items to keep forever.

Fedryn breathes heavily as the poison takes effect and he feels his strength being sapped from him. He leans heavily on his greataxe, and brushes webs from his clothing.
"This poison is sapping my strength," the ranger wheezes, "I'll need to be more careful from here."
