Will and Seltyn hurt the queen badly and Talon badly hurts the last big rat. Suny and Azlain miss. The queen lunges for Wil as he closes.

Then the queen rat goes for Suny again.

Wil takes 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 and Suny 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 and Will reflexively lays hands on himself.
The queen tries to hold Wil then Suny 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 211d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Suny evades but Will is held fast again.
Swarms of rat cross over the queens back using her has a bridge. Gouts of blood fill the channel from the queen, but she still stands holding Wil in her teeth. The last rat misses Suny.

Seltyn, remember the jungle! We need to refocus. Someone kill that little rat!

The queen rat goes for Azlain and fails to connect.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 91d8 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 171d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
The mass of rats on the queens back try to repair some of the gaping wounds their queen has suffered.

Spider takes a vial of naptha and target the queen and swarming rats

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 202d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4
After Spider crisps most of the mass of rats and undoes the healing of the rat swarm, Seltyn puts the last shot into the queen and sends her to collapse in the channel.
The shrieks of many more small rats can be heard coming from the nest.
Spider exclaims, "Crap, that was my last bomb. The word is these small rats feed whatever valuables they can find to their queen. It is a messy business, but her huge intestines are a gold mine."
Flambeaux - Elvish Bannerman |
The bannermaiden drops the banner to administer a healing potion to Suny.
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
"Get that last big rat."
Without the +1 from the banner for now. The mopping up operations begin.
Talon obliges and finishes off the last rat.
"Do we want to cut open that thing now?"
Hundreds of small rats continue to guard their pitiful nest of trash, but have lost any desire to be aggressive with the death of the queen rat.
Suny |
"Urk!" The pain and ferocity of the large rat's teeth as they clamp onto the wiry Elven lass do so with such force and power that the helpless maid swoons and becomes but a rag doll figure within the monstrosities mouth.
Fort Save:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Suny continues to spray blood every where as the great rodent shakes it's prize.
:P
Talon Moonwalker |
Firstly checking to make sure the party is ok, when Spider mentions about the intestines holding treasure, he will take a dagger from someone and start cutting open what he can and reaching in. Anything he finds will be sorted into piles. He will also keep going until he is certain that everything has been found
Suny |
Ah...sorry for that. I thought I'd been dropped to negative HPs. S'pose that be whut I get fer not keepin' a closer gander on that side of things. (>_>)
Suny groans as Setlyn administers the potion,
"Ooooo...that done hurt..." She moans.....
Seltyn Sevenleaf |
At least you're still breathing, Suny. Seltyn looks at Lianelda's ruined corpse, and can't help but show his sadness.
We took a beating. Let's get Lianelda properly interred, and come back when we're stronger. We can't let this go unavenged.
Now would be the time to see what's of value, before it's lost to us.
Seltyn casts detect magic, and looks over the dead queen and the rest of the area, looking for treasure and maybe magic.
Talon Moonwalker |
We got battered there and lost one of our own. I know its a big ask Azlain, but we need to finish what we started here. The whole point was that there might be something here that might help the elves. I know that that hasn't necessarily happened just yet, but that is my personal end goal. We will bury your friend, and return to the surface. I would ask though that you help us now.
Lets head back to the shrine. We can rest up and work out the next move from there.
Is Wil up and walking or not? Hard to tell from all this thats going on
Suny |
Suny drags herself together and looks at the fallen friend........For the first time any one can remember, the brown skinned Elf's demeanor is one of sadness and loss.....
Will Save:1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
And she quickly collapses into a sobbing, sniffling wreck.....
Yah...so some tears fer th' fallen, then we's get ourselves t'gether an' on our way....:(
Wilaml Fmelvam |
Wil staggered to the fallen Priestess and fell upon her knees, he was spent. His last ditch effort costed him more then anyone could have seen and to see the priestess in such a terrible state tore at his heart. He placed his hands on her still chest, summoning everything he had in an attempt to heal her. "Don't give up, Not yet!" Nothing happened, he tried again his hands glowing yet the power of his god never left his hands. He was determined but felt so helpless. "Come on Damn you! Don't do this!" Again nothing, she was gone and there was nothing to bring her back. He tried one final time before collapsing on the still body.
He sobbed, he should have chose to heal her, he was too weak. He failed his brother, he failed some in the companions and now this one too...
He rose, eyes tear stained, looking for vengeance. His single eye glared at the darkness around him, at the slip holes and hideaways that the rats had. "THIS WON'T END HERE! MARK ME CRETINS I WILL FIND YOU!" He picked up his bloodied sword and staggered down the refuse.
Talon Moonwalker |
Strange that he is so distraught over someone that we knew for such a short time, and that he will now seemingly sacrifice himself.
Wil! We have already marked ourselves! Yes it hurts that one we knew for such a short amount of time has died, but once she is buried our duty goes to the living. We came here to help the Elven Nation as a whole. Do you not think that we have all felt the loss you have? We need you Wil. Do not shame yourself further by abandoning those that rely on you now. You have great strength, our nation needs it. You have great wisdom, we need that. Put your sword back, gather what we have found, and let us together take our sister's body up to the shrine. One final push when we are healed and rested and can actually take care of us, and then we move on to home. Do not abandon us now Wil.
Suny |
Suny pulls her jagged emotions together, though her emotions stll show for all to see. She too moves to catch up with Wiaml,
"Here mate, we's got t'stick t'gether in this."
Chainmail |
The grizzly process of taking apart the queen finally results in what seems to be a large organ that acts as a filter on the digestive system which removes nondigestible materials and is now sort of a sack.
Rather than completely cutting it open, you manage to take this away as a very large 'sack' that glitters with shiny gems, metals, and jewelry. It is unpleasant to carry as it was recently removed from the body, but the accumulated digestion over tens of years has left a significant amount of wealth you can examine at your leisure.
The ratmen are no where to be seen.
Upon returning to the shrine with Lianelda's body and depositing her on the altar, a continual light appears at the top of the small shine to light the area in a soft glow. Soft voices seem to come from nowhere and everywhere, and Lianelda's body disappears. One of the soft voices says, "Those who serve others return to me." The voices are silent but the light remains.
Opening and sorting through the sack you find:
1244 cp - 560sp - 870 gp - 35 pp
14 gems, four of which are of large size and one that is of extra large size, two rings, a brooch, and a bracelet are found.
The rat queen had no problem swallowing weapons: Two daggers, one jeweled, one shortsword, one bastard sword and one mace.
A complete chain shirt made of surprisingly strong mithral is found at the bottom of the 'sack'.
Suny |
Aye, given the size of her mouth? I'd say the weapons were a side effect of how the big bint were eating things whole. :P
Suny moves closer to Azlain as the group returns to the shrine. She says nothing, seeming content to wait until Azlain is ready.
Talon Moonwalker |
I knew the gods were powerful, but never suspected that something like that could be done. May she find whatever it was she was searching for in life, in death.
To the group.
We fought a hard battle today, and overcame it only just. Once more, we MUST learn the lessons of the jungle, were Marlamin fell and was nearly done away with, and we only survived because of the dryad's sacrifice. Who are we to think that we can ever regain our lands unless we get ourselves organised and realise what our capabilities are.
For example, Suny, with you between myself and an enemy, I could not fire as fast as I might have liked for fear of hitting you. We have a lot of things that need work. I am unsure of how better to get this into our combined heads.
He pauses for a moment, and then begins again.
Look, I do not mean to come across as a boor, but I want to keep you all safe, and that means killing our enemies before they can kill us. Seltyn, that new spell of yours, the ray of heat. It looks impressive, and was a nice touch.
Also will do my own appraisal, taking 10 on the roll for a total of 12.
What time of day is it? I mean that was a 5 or 6 round combat, so it seems bad to need to rest up, but we took a hell of a pounding there and so it might make sense to rest up for the night
Look, we have a lot to learn. Lets rest here for a little while and then work things out from there ok. If any of you know how much these gems and so on are worth then tell us all. Seltyn, are any of these weapons magical like Oneshot?
To Oneshot
What do you suggest we do? I know these ratmen are not goblins, but you have travelled before and I would like to have your wisdom for a moment
Chainmail |
The bow speaks, "Ratmen are worthy foes, they do not expose themselves except when necessary. Never encountered them before, but they are sneakier than goblins."
Talon's appraisal has the gems at 2000gp.
Spider thinks the really big one alone may fetch 1500gp to the right buyer. The others four big ones at 200 gp each, and the smallest ones at 300 gp total. (2600gp for the lot).
The rat dissection operation took an hour, resting another hour. It is about 11AM.
Spider says, "I am out of fire bombs, I need to the see the alchemist too. Want me to sell these gems and change the money (3% to get the copper and silver to gold)?"
Talon Moonwalker |
That might well make sense to do. I would maybe also try and get some potions of healing and similar items. Put it past Seltyn though, he does after all lead us. Those fire bombs were fantastically useful, and would be a good choice to pick more of. Again though, put it past Seltyn.
Seltyn Sevenleaf |
Seltyn casts detect magic to examine the items.
We need all the help we can get. Some more bombs and some healing potions would be a good idea. If Spider can get some, let's do it.
Let's pay attention to our positioning, too. We got jammed up in there, and we had a hard time putting that thing down. Let our arrows speak for us before we close.
Talon Moonwalker |
Thank you Seltyn for saying what I was trying to get across.
Azlain, are you ok? I know that the loss of your friend has hit you hard. She will be written into our records I am sure for her sacrifice, and songs sung in her name.
Oneshot, do you have any advice? Anything that can help our cause would be most useful at this moment in time.
How long might it take you to find the right buyer Spider? If it is too long, then it might be worth us selling them at a later date, but I would like to finish these sewers today if it is possible.
Wilaml Fmelvam |
It took Wil too long to escape the refuse, so he didn't get far before his allies broke through his anguish inspired rage. Talons words stung and Suny's words cooled his anger he stood there, his bloodied sword in hand and saw the true extent of hsi wounds. He sighed then. "Her loss will be repaid, a lost, so many choices that will not be made. I am a Hospitlar, a healer and a warrior and I couldn't save her with either choice. For her sacrifice I won't forget her for what life I have left and I'd not abandon those who I consider my allies..." He cleaned off his blade in the grimy sewer water and wiped it down with a spare cloth before returning it to its sheath. "Forgive my foolish rage. Azlain I will help you carry her..."
================Back At the shrine===========================
When the body of their friend dissappeared, Wil bowed his head in respect to the will of the gods. "The gods are just this day and she has been rewarded for her kindness and sacrifice. No better reward could have been obtained..."
He listened to the others and nodded in agreement. "Resupply and return to finish what we started would be the best way to avoid more hardship. We could also do with a shower to clean out our wounds and I can bind them more properly back in our apartments."
I will assume that Lia's gear will remain with her correct?
Note to self, get appraise >.<;
Talon Moonwalker |
Wil, I am sorry that I am sometimes overly harsh in my words. We are all feeling the same loss, as we were all unable to save her with our best efforts. We have a lot of ground to cover, and plenty to learn from one another. When you have a moment, I would hear more of your background and your training. It sounds like a similar ideal to that which I have bound myself to.
Never forgotten, but not always on our mind. Let her memory steady our arms and our resolve to do what must be done to save our kind.
Azlain |
"I will be fine, Talon, thank you." Azlain says in his wet-sounding voice. "I knew her nearly as short a time as you did, but she was kind to me. Something I am only now learning the true value of."
Azlain shucks off his ragged dark brown cloak and eases himself to the ground with a wince. Though he had not been visibly wounded in the fight the bandages that covered most of his visible skin were wet with fresh blood.
He leaned back against the alter and took a long drink of water.
