Elven team in Campaign Elves vs Dwarves -- Dwarves and Gnomes Keep Out (Inactive)

Game Master Chainmail

An old school homebrew campaign for a party of Elves. They will interact with a party of dwarves on an increasing basis.
Current map

The cloud has long since disappeared and half the party swim in the channel while half walk in the shallow water. The swimmers are slightly ahead. The tunnel is eerily quiet and the debris piles are in the water and shallow water. The honeycombed wall that was previously full of snipers is also quiet.

Perception and initiative from everyone.

"Look out for..!" (Insert DM's exposition here)

As Suny rises from the waters and shouts a warning as to what she sees.

I will update and roll init from now on.

Its not a bad idea if you do it to be fair

It's faster, too. Post initiative order, and everyone knows when to go.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Also, what about perhaps using conditional orders? We tell you what we are likely to do in any given combat round, and then based off that, you actually run the combat, round by round. That way a combat session could in theory take a lot less time, meaning we get to the fun stuff faster.

Wil hadn't enjoyed splitting the party so and kept his shield raised and sword out. He knew deep down that the Ratmen had set more traps and the gas couldn't have been the worse they could muster. If they have bear traps under the water... It won't end well...

Lienilda stays near the back of the group, walking on the dry spots or wading in the shallowest water possible. She's never seen a ratman before, and doesn't know what to look for, but she's all the more alert for all that.

Wilaml Fmelvam:
Ah, sorry for not seeing your question to Suny. :( *Hug* Will definitely try and make up for the gaff at a later date wen I can. (^_^)

Just letting you roll yourselves this time so I know your modifiers, will probably post the init rolls on the campaign tab.

The swimmers are the first to see the channel and the shallow water end in a slightly elevated room with 30' high ceilings that is filled with piles of debris and decaying remains. The larger debris has been stacked to make an improved defensive set of walls approximately four feet tall and the improvised walls smell of rotting decaying wood. A large group of rats have made their last stand here and the smell of lots of rats fill the air.

Map up tonight. We will see how the new group handles the rat nest.

HP: 08/22, AC: 17(Max 21(T13,FF14), DR: 1(Water Based Critters), F:+4, R:+7, W:+2, Perc: +6, Init: +3.

Suny looks at Spider....."Oooo...this looks...bad...." She exclaims, then deftly 'flips' about and shoots back to warn her freinds about what is awaiting them on the other side of the cloud.

So, Suny's swim speed is probably going to be good enough for her to get back on the other side before any one tries to come through....maybe......

Suny sees a ratman lookout, then he throws a flask which falls well short of the entrance to the nest. Will put map up soone.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Not sure when you will be doing my action, but basically Talon will try to get within 20 feet and then throw one of the thunderstones into the centre of the enemy group. Range increment 20 feet and it is against AC5 as you are throwing to a square. Range touch attack i believe. Its a DC 15 fortitude save or be deafened for an hour for anything in 10 feet of the blast zone.

Ranged touch attack at the square that will catch the most of the enemies
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Current map

Suny sees rats behind a barricade and a ratman lookout on a raised platform. To bypass this strongpoint or engage the nest of rats.

M Elf Wiz 9 Init +4/ HP 65/65// AC: 22 18/T:17/FF:14 - Percep: +11/ F 8/R 9/W 8 /CMB 4 - CMD 17

Still here.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Also still here. Readied action to throw that thunderstone and therefore have a stun grenade!

Suny pops up beside her companions,

"Here, I think I be needin' me kit back..." She whispers moving to sit upon the edge of the walk way and putting on her armor and weapons, As she wriggles and twits to get her stuff on quickly, she explains what she's seen up ahead/around the corner while she was with Spider.

"How many of ye think ye c'n manage a swim?" She asks, "Maybe we c'n out-flank 'em, kind of deal?" She suggests.

Wil blanches at the thought of swimming, he'd sink like a stone. "I'm sorry but i'd sink like a stone Lady Suny, tell me how long you need and I can attempt to charge their position. Buying you enough time to get around them while I distract them, I know I can outlast their bolts..."

Male Elf Ranger 4

Might I suggest a slightly different plan of attack? If Azlain and Wil were to storm the rats, and then the rest of us follow shortly behind, then at least for a moment or two we might have a certain element of surprise and will at least divide their forces. Plus, with them being so strong at range, I am wondering if it is the same when they are engaged face to face.

Spoiler:
HP: 08/22, AC: 17(Max 21(T13,FF14), DR: 1(Water Based Critters), F:+4, R:+7, W:+2, Perc: +6, Init: +3.

Suny grins at Wilaml, "Don't-cha worry none,I c'n look after ye when ye're in trouble." She she tilts her head, still wriggling into the last of her gear as she listens to Talon's ideas for an attack upon the position up ahead.

"Here....them ratties an' such? They be used t' th' lack of light down here, right? Does we have a way t'make it brighter all of a sudden? Give our Elf eyes an' advantage, while takin' away one o' theirs?" She offers her own little thought into the mix to give some help.

Male Elf Ranger 4

I have just the thing, a sun rod. Here

Talon will dig out one of the rods and hand it to Suny.

Strike it quickly against something and then throw it. It lasts something like 6 hours, but will do the job. Suns rays for us all.

M Elf Wiz 9 Init +4/ HP 65/65// AC: 22 18/T:17/FF:14 - Percep: +11/ F 8/R 9/W 8 /CMB 4 - CMD 17

Suny:

No problems, I miss stuff all the time. I am a horrible skimmer by nature, especially when i'm tired. :(

Wil starts counting the stones in the ceiling as Suny dresses[/i[ once more. He grins weakly. "I'm sure you could, but I wouldn't want to burden you with it..." [i]I can't swim, is that so hard to say? He pulls out a potion of Shield of Faith and readies to drink it. "We won't lose today, lets bring them to their knees." When everyone is ready to move out he downs his potion and takes one of the lead position's, ready to charge into the enemies lines.

HP 40/45, AC 21*, Fort +4, Ref +6, Will +8, ArcRes 2/8 Active Effects: Heightened Senses, Defending Bone (45), Extended Shield, Unseen Servant,

"Do they control their smaller bretheren? Regular weapons, not much good against swarms of small creatures. I don't want to walk into that without magical backup."

Male Elf Ranger 4

I don't believe that they control their brethren any more than a master might control his dogs. It will I imagine be a similar level. So as I understand it, Suny swims into a position, Azlain and Wil both move into position and then as Suny throws the sun rod, I throw the stone and hopefully stun and blind them together? Then we charge? Is that right?

Magical backup will be found in the form of Seltyn, we don't have any more than that to offer currently, although Seltyn has an amazing spell that seems to work on weaker monsters. Do you remember that colour spray we used against the bastards in the jungle?

M Elf Wiz 9 Init +4/ HP 65/65// AC: 22 18/T:17/FF:14 - Percep: +11/ F 8/R 9/W 8 /CMB 4 - CMD 17

If only it had worked on all of them. We might have prevailed, then.

If I can get a clear line of sight to them, I can cast "glitterdust," which has a good chance of blinding them, and if it doesn't, will still illuminate them so they can't hide very easily for a short while.

Suny nods at the instructions even as she finishes with the donning of her gear,

"Okeys then. So...if'n every one's ready I'll get this party started!" She says with a giggle and a grin,

"When ye see th' light, take it to 'em!" So saying she again disappears beneath the surface, not seeming the worse for wear encumbered by her leathers and swords.

Chainmail:
So, DM Sir, scooting forwards to where every one else indicated Suny should. Rising up and smacking the stick, then tossing the thing with a resounding 'Fire in'a HOLE!' type shout. (^_^)

While Suny dresses and Seltyn casts, is Talon going to approach the opening? Suny spotted them and was spotted.

Bugger...and sowwie. :(

Male Elf Ranger 4

It happens . SUNY and I will throw at same time

Okay, Suny returns and changes into her armor. Two more flasks are hurled at the opening breaking and causing a cloud of think smoke to block the way (on map). 1d20 ⇒ 81d20 ⇒ 15

Suny and Talon decide to approach the opening and throw. Are you holding your breath through the smoke?

Male Elf Ranger 4

Yes almost certainly. Only throwing if I can see where I am throwing

Talon and Suny approach through the cloud, visibility is barely 20'. Talon exposes himself just in time to throw his thunderstone and Suny throws the sunrod from cover by the channel, 1d20 ⇒ 4 and Talon throws the thunderstone at the three rats clustered in the front. 1d20 ⇒ 201d20 ⇒ 81d20 ⇒ 4
Two of three seem affected by the loud explosion over their head. The rats duck under their barricade and wait.

Male Elf Ranger 4

Aye. Next action would be to shoot lots

Will embibes his potion and as he felt his faith soar to new heights, fanning his courage into a blaze of zealous righteousness. As the shielding hand of his god touched his shoulders he raised his shield and angled his blade for a thrust as he shouted. "Forward for Our people, Fight with Honor, strike with precision and show courage no matter the odds. CHARGE!"

SA: Drink Shield of Faith Potion +2 AC, AC = 22
MA: Move as far as I can. >:)

Male Elf Ranger 4

The issue we have is either we all delayed till I could take my action at the same initiative count as Suny, or Suny delayed till her count now matches mine. In either case the old initiative order might not actually count, and we need clarification

I looked at the initial actions as being a surprise round of sorts, despite being seen. And now regular actions are taking place. Thus following the Initiative order as it is.

Male Elf Ranger 4

If both sides are aware of each other then no surprise round

No surprise round. Wil drinks his potion already. Talon throws his thunderstone with Suny. Spider tries to throw a shimmering flask at the same time 1d20 ⇒ 20. With masterful touch, the flask is detonated by the thunderstone over the rats heads raining burning naptha on their heads and setting them and part of the barricade on fire. 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Wil rushes (or leaps) across the five foot channel into the room.

Everyone delayed until Talon's '9'. Seltyn and the new party members have delayed also. Don't leave Wil hanging.

Sounds good... And yeah Suny being spotted means no surprise round, I know that thats why I said a surprise round of sorts because for all our actions the ratmen didn't fire at us. So now we see how bad Wil's lone charge goes...

Here's the map.

Will this stuff dissipate any time soon, or should we just hold our breath and charge in?

Male Elf Ranger 4

I will withdraw my rapier as part of movement and then spend the entirety of my movement running to engage the rat man at M9 (as I see the map)

For the elves!

If I am allowed an attack

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

HP: 08/22, AC: 17(Max 21(T13,FF14), DR: 1(Water Based Critters), F:+4, R:+7, W:+2, Perc: +6, Init: +3.

Suny swims further up the tunnel, to the 'other' side of the cloud before poking her head up and having a gander.

Stealth:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

Perception:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Suny threw the sunrod in the room, Talon threw the thunderstone, Spider threw the bomb. Will has charged and leapt across the channel (DC 5 acrobatics to say afoot). Waiting on our new divine healer and fighter.

Female Wood Elf Cleric 2

Sorry, didn't see the updates for some reason. By the way, Lienilda has the following spells prepared today:

Divine Favor, Sanctuary, Shield of Faith, Bless (Domain)

Lienilda, never having encountered a ratman before, to her knowledge, defers to her new companions and lets them take the lead. She does not unsling her bow, knowing she will have to get past the smoke in order to use it. Instead, she tries to stay as close to the center of the group as possible, in case the ratmen land a strike or two from range.

Move to H17
