Xov |

To the Station employee, Ebran says, "Sounds great. Thank you."
To Essar, Ebran replies, "Of course, I love good wine. Dark rum as well."
GM: What does Ebran know of Thalios?
To Xov, Ebran says, "I spent most of my time in Stormhome. And yes, this is a mark of storm. The folks I worked with at House Lyrandar told me a little about it. They seemed quite astonished that it appeared on me as well, but I do have distant elven ancestors. Just not close enough to give me the ears or the eyebrows or disdain for manual labor, ha ha!"
"I see...so I take it that you are a House Lyrander Loyalist?"
Xov knew he could not completely trust anyone loyal to a dragonmarked house, but Lyrander was at least on good terms with his Queen, was still an Aundairian, so he at least deserved friendlyness. After all, any fellow Aundairian is certainly better than a Thranian.
Ebran Asur |

To Essar, Ebran answers, "Heh, in my opinion, both think too highly of their vineyards. Aundair's wine can't be beat. It isn't even a matter of national pride, we just have better soil for it. As to the type, either is good based on what you're eating."
To Xov, Ebran states, "Loyalist seems like an unfairly limiting term. I don't really get involved in politics too much. It's just that I like to travel, to feel the salty water spray on my face, to hear the flap of the sails, to see the clouds beneath the bow. House Lyrandar has the opportunities I am looking for."

Essar Kalvin |

Yes I will admit Aundairian vintages are good, although hard to get outside of the nobility. Your countrymen drink it all dry, but I can tell you that Karnath has better then Thrane could ever envision. After all a faith so filled with self loathing as the Silver Flame is only capable of growing grapes of the most sour kind.

Danir |

Danir was too awash in the sensations of the train to really be concerned with his companions' conversations except on a most basic level- when prompted he had replied "I was a battle enginner for my homeland of Cyre, working on maintaining the Warforged, as well as forging or repairing weapons and armor- if personally attacked I was also granted leave to protect myself."
Upon the matter of wine, Danir thanks the others but simply abstains- "It has been a long time since I've drank and I have become rather fond of strong tea instead- it helps keep me sharp and focused."

Kyndril Mieren |

Kyndril lets the conversation of the others flow around him, adding the occasional word when he is asked something. He nods quietly in approval of Danir's words on drinking. It wouldn't do for a drunken magic-wielder to go around and accidentally torch someone's house, after all. A question occurs to him, then.
"Say, Danir, was it? Do you know in what way this train is experimental? And how much risk we're at being on it?"
Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
The Perception is to notice anything different about the lightning rail than those he's used to, if anything is subtle, etc. The Arcana is to tell if he himself can answer what he's asking Danir.

too bad for you, you don't see anything unusual. Remember, if Danir was House Orien, he could more accurately say.

Kyndril Mieren |

"Thank you. I'm sure the Brelish wouldn't put us on a potentially dangerous lightning rail" Kyndril says dryly. "But I'd feel better if an expert checked, and since we're going to be traveling with each other for awhile, I figured it might be best to ask you, and not one of the Orien." It is, after all, important to build trust. Kyndril opens up his spell book, beginning to flip through it quietly.

Does it have anything to do with three rows of conductor stones? Don't they normally have two?
"Well its not my area of expertise but let me look..."
[dice=Perception check]1d20+5
[dice=Spellcraft check]1d20+10
Spellcraft Success, Perception failure
The lightning rail goes on one line of conductor stones.

Danir |

Danir looks down at the layout of the train and how it functions, lets his senses spread out to feel the web of enchantments woven into the cars and then sees what he is looking for... Ahh-Ha!
[b]"This train contains a bound storm elemental, much like an airship with a bound flame elemental- this is probably a new means of increasing the speed of the train and allows a properly trained conductor to communicate with the elemental for greater control over the train's movement."

Kyndril Mieren |

Kyndril nods, a slight smile on his face. After a moment he blinks. A storm elemental? He has been out of touch, he supposes. The young magus absently returns to his spellbook.
"Truly, the Dragonmarked Houses are workers of marvels... I admit, I am impressed..."
Nevertheless, he continues to read his spellbook, attempting to prepare himself for the worst.

Okay, I have a question. When should I use Knowledge (Arcana) vs. Spellcraft? Oh, and do I have the starting spells of a magus in my spellbook?
Yes.
Knowledge: Arcana is used when you need Intelligence. You recall a particular arcane fact in small talk, when you are asked about a particular effect of a spell, magic device, etc., when you need to make strategic plans.
In Ghostbusters, they use Knowledge: Occult a lot. Usually when Spangler is revealing his own knowledge (he's the logical one), and second when Ray is talking about the Apartment building. Knowledge skills represents real knowledge and come into play when brains are needed. In the Wheel of Time books, Moraine relies on Knowledge: Arcana when discussing Rand's power and revealing the craft of the Aes Sedai.
Spellcraft is about using Intuition (infact, the skill should be based on Wisdom) and Creativity. Spellcraft is used when you are crafting a new spell, or you are trying to figure something out. Danir used Spellcraft correctly, I surmised, in trying to figure out what is strange about this particular Lightning Rail. In the Wheel of Time books, Rand uses spellcraft alot to figure out "new" weaves such as Balefire (hell, I should be using the WoT rpg magic system, it's much, much, much more Advanced than the Vancian system). To my knowledge, Lews Therin never taught Rand how to Fly, but it's possible.

Danir |

With Kyndril's question answered, Danir boards the train and looks for a less crowded section of the train to sit in, as he wished to start making some plans for his future beyond delivering the bundle and getting his repatriation papers.
Perhaps some time spent in New Cyre would make sense, if only to earn some money and get access to a forge to make weapons of his own design and construction...
While he was considering this point, he also made certain to surreptiously check that his gold purse and signet ring were safely hidden on his body where he had secreted them, as a train station or busy train would be an excellent place for a cutpurse to ply their trade.

Kyndril Mieren |

GM: Gotcha
Kyndril boards the lightning train as well, keeping a careful eye out for anything interesting. He follows Danir, occasionally glancing back to make sure the others are staying together (even the Aundairians and the Karrn). He carefully puts his remaining money on his belt, stowing his spellbook.
Does he have enough rested-ness to prepare his spells at this time, or does it actually have to be outright rest/sleep?
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

[dice=Perception]1d20+3
Yes, he does. the roll of 7 means you don't notice anything important.

You see a man cut a purse from a woman's side and run down the station. The woman shrieks and her companion -- her husband -- says, "Stop, thief!"

Danir |

Curious, because an infusion takes longer than a spell to cast and going from the text of Baker's own novels it sems an infusion can be 'cast' into an item before being activated- is this how you handle them? And if so, how long can the infusion be 'held' before losing the infusion if it is not immediately activated?

Browman |

hearing some commotion, Othan looks around to see what the trouble is. Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 assuming I see the thief I will attempt to cut off his escape manifesting my mind blade as I move into position. I also make it very clear that i am quite willing to make this a very bad day for the thief. Intimidate 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Success on both accounts, you move into position, in front of the thief, giving him quite a fright. However, magical energy rushes at the theif and hits him. (the daze spell)
Theif's will save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4

result = 4.
The combined fright and the daze causes the thief to faint, loosing consciousness. Everyone looks at you, Othan, thinking that you've dazed him.

Othan |

othan collects the dagger and coin purse, he is going to give the purse back after he deals with the thief, assuming there is enough time before the train leaves he will take the thief to the fighter's guild, maybe there is a bounty. Otherwise he is going to throw the unconscious thief in a ditch.

![]() |

"With what?!?"
Xov frantically looks around for something to tie the thief with:
[dice=perception]1d20+5
[dice=ven'xol perception]1d20+4"Hurry, Othan!"
How much time until the train leaves?
You find some good, strong, resilient hemp rope.

Othan |

realizing there is not much time, Othan takes a moment to throw the thief in the nearest ditch, spits on him, then returns the coin purse, thanks Xov for his help and boards the train, "about that wine you were speaking of earlier, it sounds like an excellent idea. I believe a good red would be appropriate. "

With everyone aboard, lightning is heard along the train as bolts of electricity discharge along the underside. A whistle sounds and steam is vented along the underside as the train pulls forward. Everyone is pressed against their seat for a bit and then the train starts out slow. Then, the speed along the conductor stones climbs higher.
The train goes faster from the outside, leaving the station. People wave handkerchiefs from out of the train and in the train. The train's rate of acceleration increases until it reaches the blindingly fast speed of . . . 40 miles an hour! Although designed like a bullet, the conductor doesn't dare speed it up lest the binds that hold the Elemental in place weaken and it escapes in a spectacular blast.

Kyndril Mieren |

Kyndril beckons the Aundairian human over to his seat, nearby to Danir. He glances outside, arching a brow, unsure of whether or not to be impressed. After a few moments, the magus looks around for the shifter and the drow, wondering where they are. The mad priest, he would rather not see, Flame forgive him, but if he must, he must.
"Is that what we have to bring to this gentleman?" He nods at the package. "Do you know what it says?" The Khorvar asks with a faint frown. "If anything."

Ebran Asur |

"No, honestly it doesn't matter to me. I doubt any matter of importance would be left to us. I imagine this is some insignificant thing that will hopefully solve our issue, but in the grand scheme of things means nothing. I'd just like to get on with the matter, drop this off and be on my way to the nearest dock. However, my sense of adventure tells me that I am going to be stuck with you all for some time."

Xov |

Xov notices the rest of his group and approaches.

The lightning rail flew at that blinding speed (40 miles an hour, wow) along the conductor stones. As dinner time approaches, the smell of fine food has flooded the coach. Beef, pork, chicken -- all being prepared for those with discerning, but not exquisite tastes.
(you are all aboard.)
