The rumor we heard while carousing promised ...
one millionone thousand gold. I don't suppose he could pay us in those fancy lighter coins.?Ron listens to the Mayor instruct the messenger. How will she inform the crown and the towns in time? What if she is captured? We must send out many messengers.
In response to the request for a favor:
Mayor, there is already much we must do to prepare to face these threats. We will complete this favor, but ye must do one in return. Open the treasury and repair the gate, today, whatever the cost. Now, what needs doing?
Ron, if I may be so bold, with the militia divided by a third, we have little hope of holding the city ourselves. However, if we break the camp by surprise we can scatter their forces while they're unaware. Perhaps we strike first and hardest?
Carrier pidgeons and ravens (yeah, I have watched too much GOT) carry messages, and sure, every coin is worth 10 normal coins
"The elf has the right of it. Norwich has to prepare, and we cannae do nothin in a day, so I need you and your allies to give us time. a few days if ye can swing it." He pulls out a map of the surrounding areas (courtesy of the cult, in fact), and points to a spot to the north. "Garin should be about there, if you want to meet up with him, otherwise, it would seem the force is concentrated here" He points to an area directly upriver of Norwich. What do you do?
Sheridan spots Rob and has a double-take. They look back toward the river and then to Rob. "Y'sure got here fast, Bucky. What's he sayin'? Is it the Braxicans what are tainting the waters? You should serously consider gettin' them to move along." The Traveler nods as though he we imparting rare gems of wisdom. There, solved the shy folk's problems again. I sure am in a philanthropic mood today.
Mayella pulls you into the den (I mean stewards office), and turns to you "I beleive you are earnest, and just out of your element. it must be very different under the sea. but I am afraid that this is not a simple misunderstanding between Braxos and Tanard." She pauses a moment "Tanard is the kingdom We are in, and Braxos is the one next to us, and they want our land, to farm and mine and use. What the mayor is proposing is that Ron, Belym and Conwall, perhaps Iron Tom as well, go to them, and kill them, so that they don't kill us for our land. I don't mean to condescend, you just seemed... confused"
"Also, I would like to thank you for what you did in the barracks today, if you wish, you may stay in Norwich as long as you please, though I doubt it compares to your undersea kingdom". She shakes her head, and adopts a rueful smile. "I've just realized, none of you really have homes, do you? You left the sea far behind, and Ron didn't come from here, and I don't think he can go back. I know Belym seeks her lost kin, and whatever Conwall says, no member of the diaspora is so willingly. You could do well with them." She says, before finally going to rejoin the proceedings. What do you do?

Or might be we distract them to delay them with a spectacle of some sort.

More than a scare, Sheridan. There's tactical value in taking the enemy by surprise, especially if that surprise is an unexpected flank.
I move to look at the map that Belym is analyzing.
I'm not a solider like some of my brethren, but I did study elvish military history quite extensively in my youth. This situation is not unlike the Battle of Benoit's Valley, except that the opposing force is not on perpetually burning with arcane fire and no one here rides a possessed horse filled with the restless souls of Nightstone Prison. Still, we're looking at a situation where we can split their forces and ruin their assault if we're careful. You said the raiding party you encountered was afraid of elves? That means they're a rational group aware of their own mortality. It also means that the soldiers aren't fanatics. They'll flee if their lives are in danger. If we can panic them and lead them into a trap we can break their forces completely.
I trace my finger along the river.
What if we send a force to creep along the river here, deposit the poison, assassinate their commander, terrorize the troops into retreating away from the river and into our trap at the quarry. Easy peasy lemon squeezy

"A fouled current is bad enough. I'm not riding TAM through blighted waters." Sheridan looks over Tom's shoulder at the map. She didn't really understand maps, but then she didn't grow up in a place that was so flat. Watching the others point out landmarks helped, though. "Why not surround them on three sides, drive 'em into the quarry, and flood that? That way you don't end up poisoning th' reef we just saved, and my critters have a nice place to call home. I mean, someone should take care of all those bodies when we're done."

Leading or driving might work. Trapping them in the quarry would buy us time. To be honest, rerouting the river seems beyond our means, but I defer to Belym. Regardless, I trust ye and it seems I best go prepare.
Ron takes his leave and first goes to retrieve Kaspar's clothing and any other cultish items he had on his person. He then leads Roach back to his home, stores the gold in a hidden crevice, and takes off his scale armor. He washes Kaspar's clothes as best as he is able and then sits to draft a letter that reads:
Kaspar,
If you wish to join the ranks of Kelos' chosen, you must poison the Braxan army camped on the river near Norwhich. Ensure their commander dies. This sacrifice will bring the day of Kelos closer. When you complete your task come to our altar (Distance) miles to the (Direction) of the army camp. We await your triumph.
Sincerely,
(That woman's name that Kaspar mentioned.)
His tasks complete, Ron spends at least an hour training with Remorse. This is how I see his Prepare Spells move working.
He dresses in Kaspar's old clothes and leaves his shield and armor in the home. He wraps all of the poison into the cultist clothes and leaves to find the others.

Most assuredly not. Conwall has no idea of the answer. He's mostly speaking out loud that we know that the army will run, but we don't know they'll chase. It's in service of his idea (make the army think they're surrounded so they retreat into the quarry) as opposed to Sheridan's plan (lure the army into the quarry)

If the bottom of the quarry don't go much past the surface of the current, it'll be a job an' a half gettin' any of it uphill. I mean, Tam is big an' all, but even she couldn't move the waters like that." Disappointed, the Traveler shows significantly less interest in the situation. Ron slips into the camp with his spell, and creates whatever disturbance he can - sets fires, cuts lines for horses, things like that. If he can take out their commander, so much the better. Meanwhile, Sheri takes a couple of Garin's men who have bows and attacks from the water. Conwall leads half the rest of Garin's men in from the east, using his elven gambit, and I'll lead the rest from the south, using an earthen creature to lead the way. We'll leave the north open, so they can retreat back to Braxos once their morale is hopefully broken. The priest can join whichever group he likes. Ron can join up with either Conwall or I once the attack is underway."

I'm no expert on these things, but when some of me old... soldier friends sought high value... targets they would draw the attention of the main group with a distraction and then enter the camp from a different angle and secure the target, Tom says sweaty from the day's labor, Couldn't the large force lob arrows - starting with flaming arrows t' set tents on fire and scare mounts and then hide in a treeline? They just need t' constantly retreat and just keep the pursuers busy. Then a group can come from the river side and reach the leader as he gives orders from his tent.
Tom shifts uncomfortably, If ye need an ear t' the ground, I am willing t' enter the camp as a healer. I don't want to choose a side, but when poison and blights are the agents of war I must side with the traditional implements of steel and missiles.

Suddenly, I leap away from the table and bound to Ron. Sir Ron! At the keep you had an unnatural rapport with that cultist. He seemed almost entranced and willing to betray his order. Do you think you could do the same to the enemy commander if the rest of us distract the army with flaming arrows and rock monsters?

The more I think about it, the more I think we should send the troops in from the east and we creep in from the north instead of sending some people through the river. Ron can't swim and be invisible because he'll be transparent but his wet footsteps won't be. Conwall can float but not submerge so he looses the element of surprise.
Let's settle on the plan and get started.

I think we have a plan here: Ron solo infiltrates to eliminate or ensorcel the commander. Party meets up with Garin and attacks with a retreating action to distract or delay. I don't think flooding or trapping in quarry is still in the cards. One problem is Garin's group is across river from camp. Also, Ron could ride Roach from the gates so the party can all fit in TAM.
Jericho, you may certainly join us, but I must travel alone. Stay with Conwall and follow his commands.
Ron is under no delusions, this will be one of his most dangerous assignments. He must be cautious.
Change Tactics to Cautious: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 6) + 2 = 12

Ron approaches Belym and whispers so Jericho cannot hear, I unloaded Roach. The gold is under the third floorboard from the north wall in my basement. I hope we return to spend it together.
We know our roles. Good luck.
Ron heads for the most north eastern exit from the town, waving to the militiamen on the wall as he leaves. He moves along the outside of the wall towards the river. When he is out of sight of any townsmen, he attempts to disappear.
Cast Invisibility: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 2) + 2 = 9
I choose to draw unwelcome attention. Maybe a militiaman sees me disappear from view?
Ron travels north along the river, cautious for any signs of threat. He will stop and stand motionless at the first sign of life or movement.
Let's do this!

Two groups, then - Garin's men, and the PCs.
Questions:
Is there a place Garin &co could ford the river, or would they have to come back to Norwhich to cross?
Do we want our small, plucky band to attack from the north or the south? I'd still vote south, to leave a retreat path (and have one ourselves).
What's up with Conwall not being able to submerge? Does he turn into a gremlin?
Do we want Ron to go in ahead of, behind, or at the same time as the party? I was thinking Ron first, to throw them into disarray before we attack, but if we have Garin's group feinting that matters less.

Iron Tom prepares to aid these fellows with the wisdom of Iisac. Prepping Bless x 2
Can you prepare a spell twice? I haven't read the rules that thoroughly in a wile, so I could be wrong, but as this magic isn't strictly Vancian, I think you're only allowed to prep a spell once (I could be wrong)

Are you all going to Garin's camp together? or only a certain group, and if so, who?
Yes, there are plenty of places for them to ford, just no near the Braxan army.
Everyone
You guys can recruit more hirelings from the ranks of the Militia, either the town forces or Garin's. You guys are considered useful around there points for the purposes of the move

My read is that the PCs are going to enter the camp, following an invisible Ron. Our forces attack from the side, we smash up the camp a bit, no one notices Ron REALLY messing things up. Am I reading it right?

Yeah, I think we're meant to be a distraction while Ron assassins it up with his sneakitude.
Sheridan returns from their pack with an armfull of harmless-looking starfish, the conversation having shifted once again. "Do you folk have a small driftwood conveyance? TAM could help cross the current..."
Edit: Fictionally, I don't like the idea of beginning a plan that involves a river we hope others can't cross by crossing it ourselves. The more we reinforce the meme of how un-possible this river is to cross, the deeper it gets.

All rules are up to the GM but a quick Google search says you can prepare the same spell twice and there isn't that restriction stated in the rules. It is only useful in case I fail in case I forget it once :)
I can change it back to Bless and Cure Wounds though.
Tom keeps a grip on his staff and prepares to throw his life down for the other outsider brought into this mission.

Okay, so...
Ron
If I am correct, you are going alone to the Braxan camp. I think this is a perilous journey, but no need for a quartermaster. Do tell me 1, is there anything else you do before you set out, and 2. which (trailblazer or scout) do you roll for, and which do you automatically miss on (sorry, risks of travelling alone)
Sheridan, Belym, Conwall, & Iron tom
If I am correct, you are planning to meet up with Garin's forces, and then coordinate an assault with them, from multiple sides, as a distraction while Ron assassinates or captures their commander. 1, is there anything else you do before you set out, and 2. This is a perilous journey, so choose a trailblazer, and a scout (No need for a quartermaster, as this is a zero-ration journey.)

I'd like to nominate the two PCs with wisdom bonuses for those rolls :-) Sheri and Tom.
Also, Belym will be summoning an elemental shortly before we reach the Braxan camp; let me know when I should roll that.
Bonus question: I was picturing Ron entering the camp no more than a few minutes ahead of us; should he travel with us instead?

For better or worse, Ron's out on his own already. I assumed you would be heading to find Garin so I would have some time to get in position. With that in mind, I'll be failing trailblazer and rolling for scout. Also it seems thematically appropriate with my slow and steady route. Come to think of it, I am just following a river, so could I convince you trailblazer wouldn't be necessary either?
Ron continues north along the river, cautious for signs of dangerous fauna or enemy soldiers.
Scout's Honor: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11
IRL fist pumping.
EDIT: To set the scene, Ron had already left town alone and on foot, and cast invis on himself at the foot of the Norwhich wall with a complication of drawing attention to himself. He is dressed in Kaspar's cultist clothing and carries Remorse, point down, disguised as a staff. He left his armor and shield behind, and also carries the note he wrote beforehand, a healing potion that Belym purchased, 6 uses of poison (maybe 7 if the poison I confiscated from Faolan's person was enough for a use), and a deep and abiding grudge against these guys. Roach is stabled, and the gold and ruby are hidden in Ron's home. He also has five rations and five uses of adventuring ear. He carries nothing else.
2nd EDIT: Did Kaspar have anything else of note on his person? I think Ron would have taken any cultish accessories, or symbols, ingredient pouches, or what have you.
