May I Defend Glaucus? I don't know your thoughts on what Tom's trying to do with Defend, but I'd like a chance to be a freaky sea monster beast wrastler and catch a bear paw like I do this every Tuesday. (Footing optional, maybe this is Shadow of the Colossus) How many CON/STR rolls is that? Is that an intended part of this character's narative? What is my agency to gatekeep dangerous monsters? Were they put here for Sheridan to face, like a thief's locked door? I am interested to see what you feel Sheridan should take away from this encounter.

Sheridan squares off with the beast, feet anchored to the stone, stance wide, gills turgid with blood and framing their face like a cerulean mane. "Glaucus, the eyes."

What do I roll?

I'm going to bring the guy with me, what is the damage? And I've been holding 3 for a defend move on Sheridan for a while now, and I got my first chance to use it.

Okay, you wnat to wrestle the bear? wrestling is DD+STR, nad wrestling a bear... well the moves will be harder, so hope you 10+. also the wrestling is not, but befirending and adding them to your collection was something I thought you might be interested in (That would be parlaying with wisdom). You have no obligation to help (Unless you feel that you do.), but you have an opportunity. and yes, I did put the animals, and the beastmasters here for you, but, they became the big threat. woul you tell me more of plan to do?

If you'll let me parley the bear with wisdom the way it works with the critter curios, that's pretty cool. Never occurred to me to try that, I just saw the CHA stat and figured I had to find some other way. Dunno why. At the same time, I don't wanna come into every situation like this and just roll +WIS to take control of any beast regardless of the circumstances, I think this is how Sheridan earns leverage for the first time with an enraged critter. I'll take back the comment about the eyes, though.

When the bear swings back around toward the traveler and their charge, Sheridan focuses on making contact, and making an impression. She sees the fear and the rage and the displaced aggression, and if the keeper of curiosities can break through that wall, she may be able to redirect all that pent up frustration. Before the merfolk can pontificate further, the bear's paw comes in hot, looking to hit them with the force of a charging nautilusk.

Defy Danger(STR): 2d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6, 6) + 1 + 1 = 14
How does that suit you? Can I catch the paw and pin the bugger down with that, or am I awkwardly riding it now?

I think this is why I wasn't trying to do it that way right away. The "subtle sonic communications through touch or a simple medium like stone or water to convey sincere emotions" was what I was going for with the Command Critters move, and I didn't think I could do it with just anything. Sheridan needs to get intimate to catch a skylander beast's attention. Gotta speek 'is language.

That seems a good restriction (god, I love you guys, I barely need to GM). also, with non sea animals, they can take a place in your collection (and you can gradually start pulling out land animals with CoC) your communication is strictly empathic, not language based.

You catch the paw, and manage to get up on him, over his face holding his mouth shut (works on skycritters as well as sea critters). you are riding on the bear, and you might just have it's respect, what do you do?

Iron Tom Bonney wrote:

To distract it, it would be DD+Cha, or something else you can justify. if you are trying to placate it, that would probably be aid another for Sheri. Which is it?

Seeing that the fighting is over, and the dangerous critters conveniently collated, Sheridan will go fetch TAM from the river and get her associated with the new strays. She will be by the pens until someone bothers her. The area around the pens will slowly and mysteriously clear of bodies. If she gets any time in adition to new resident orientation, it'll be spent neatly packing a stock of gently used Braxan equipment that someone left lying around.

Just so you all know, the militia commander won't be able to go out on zany adventures, so I'll be demoting myself soon.

What here is useful or valuable to me? Also, as a just-looking-around question: how much did they leave behind as they fled? Are they likely to still be supplied, or do we now have a foodless, tentless army nearby?

okay, between the two of you, I'll just list the treasure.

inside the chest (which is itself 1-weight) there are 330 gold coins (Braxan currency, same value as Tanard, but it will draw suspicion) there is also a strange stone, perfectly round, with a green-blue mist swirling inside it. and in his desk, Selwyn was keeping a number of spell reagents (instruction enough to add "Visions through time" to your spellbook) and a large ruby carved in the symbol of his house (worth 600 gold)

at the mercenary camp, you find a whip that emmanates power, and a collection of pelts worth 700 gold between them.

scattered throughout the camp is all the rations and adventuring gear you want (5 use increments, please) and the payroll for the army, 1100 braxan gold pieces all told.

and yes, they had to leave behind all their provisions. so until the next supply wagons arrive(in a couuple days according to the plans on Selwyn's desk), they are leaderless, and foodless.

What do you do?

Seeing that the fighting is over, and the dangerous critters conveniently collated, Sheridan will go fetch TAM from the river and get her associated with the new strays. She will be by the pens until someone bothers her. The area around the pens will slowly and mysteriously clear of bodies. If she gets any time in adition to new resident orientation, it'll be spent neatly packing a stock of gently used Braxan equipment that someone left lying around.

You may spend the whole night with the creatures if you so choose, you appear to be camping. could we get a few tableus of you and TAM meeting these skybeasts, just for amusement? Are you butchering the mercinaries, and storing their meat? if so, take as much humanoid meat as you care (4 use increments please), and roll +dex if you are being stealthy about it.

in their healers tent (next to the butchers) you find a good deal of moderately medicinal herbs, excellent as offerings to Iisac. as you bury the dead (an exacting process, but a few militiamen help you, while others call for them to be left rotting. you finish well into the night, a few hours from dawn. there are Norwich men who were wounded in the attack, what do you do?

Once I get one, I make a paste out of river mud and healing potion and cover my face in it, as is an elven custom. One the mud hardens and flakes off, fresh unscarred skin remains below it. It's exfoliated too!

as your face is healed, jericho throws her arms around you. "I am so sorry, I should have stayed by you. I will do anything to make up for it!" she says, almost crying. what do you do?

Sheridan pats TAM's shell. "This'd be the part where I show you'uns to where ye'd be sleepin' but I dunno if she's got a cabin big enough for either of you. I may have ter move the deep shelf tank one cabin over an ye could take turns- at least until we find you yer own domains. It's not clear how much of what's being said is getting through to the beasts assembled, and it's certainly not clear from how sincere Sheridan's delivery is whether or not she believes they hear her.

Periodically, Sheridan will stop the lecture to wrestle an antsy beast into submission, then pick through the mess nearby for something to catch her eye, which seems to be everything.

"We have to adapt to the tools of these hominids." she says as she cuts a chainmail shirt from sleeve to neck and sleeve to torso to fit it toga-style over the bear. Then, holding one of the dead man's arms, they raise the calvary saber to cut the exposed joint.

Seeing Conwall's discomfort with Jericho, Ron sends her and Owen back to Norwhich to fetch Roach, his armor and shield, and ten additional militiamen to establish better control over the camp.

Satisfied with his soldiers, Ron sits down with a bound Selwyn.

I try to comfort Jericho as platonically as possible. Oh, I'm fine now, and we won! So you did great, no need to second guess.

I am thankful when Ron sends her away.

Its not that Jericho isn't attractive by human standards. It's just that I'm several hundred years older than she is. It's like a baby falling in love with...actually the age gap is so unfathomably large there's no real metaphor for me to use.

Belym will coordinate the efforts of the uninjured Norwhich militia at dealing with the camp - sorting, tearing down tents, and generally gathering things for easy transport back to Norwhich or disposal.

Also restocking on adventuring gear.

Once that's started, she'll sit and watch Sheri deal with her critters for a while, eventually asking " So, are you actually talking with them? They understand you?"

Before she's executed for crimes against humanity, Sheridan takes a short break to talk to Belym. "They understand the sending, and talking helps me ter articulate a propper sending. They don't all listen very well. Sometimes I've gotta get up close an' personal ter get my point accross." Sitting on a fence post, the merfolk takes the calvary saber by the middle of the blade and uses it to cut a soft leather gambison into thongs. Most of the material is ruined in the process. "It's a bit like talking while you write. The sending's also... warped because it's meant ter go through water. The stone is alright, but air makes it come out so... squeeky. Some of it gets lost. Gotta send like a leviathan

as you are feeding your new friends (so many interesting skybeasts, arthropods and mammals and reptiles), you decide to have a little snack (These livers are so rich, epeciallty when the blood coagulates in it, gives it a jelly-like texture), and as you bite deep into a fresh one, you hear someone yell out What the hell are you doing? they yell.

you look up to see 4 militiamen standing there. one you recognize as Ashton, another who's name is Zoe, and two who you don't know. Their swords drawn, and one of them taking out a set of shackles, what do you do?

Jericho and Owen agree, and take horses to go back, they should be back in a few hours. As you sit and speak to Selwyn, his face twists in disdain I'm not like you, James. I intend to win my war he says. what do you do?

Also, I left something off the loot. Selwyns gear, which is an elegant claymore (two handed, close, reach, +1 damage, 2 piercing, 3 weight, 350 coins), a set of enameled plate mail (3 armour, clumsy, 500 coins, 4 weight) and Selwyn himself, who is worth a lords ransom (10,000 coins, at least).

Thank you she says as you reassure her. when Ron sends her away, she embraces you again, assuring you that she will be back soon before rushing to the stables. I assume you are sitting with ron and Selwyn, explaining your problem. What do you do?

After Sheridan explains the sending, (blood noticeable on her fingers and teeth, and you notice bodies haphazardly hidden in the bushes) you spend a short while with the militia, before you hear shouting behind you, near the Mercenary camp. What do you do?

"Desiccating th-" Sheridan is blinking, somewhat bewildered. "The last thing I'd wanna do is dry- Well I didn't figure you'd take much kind to me eating the living." Their nervous chuckle sounds like a thrill of notes. "Can I wipe my mouth? I'm feeling real self-concious about being the only one covered in blood. D'you folk not eat meat? Is that what's wrong?"
