Dungeon Map | Equipment

Two heroic adventuring parties enter the ruins beneath a field where once an ancient evil tower stood.
Each of them are brought here by a different patron, and neither can leave until their purpose is served...

Obsidian Portal

This is a short retro AD&D style dungeon crawl. I'm going for the feel of a convention style game, with two parties competing to complete the dungeon alive and retrieve the most loot.

It ties into my ongoing multi-party sandbox set in the Lost Lands.

If I recruit from the survivors to join my ongoing game they will have a big leg-up on loot vs the miserable starting wealth I normally use (also the character creation guidelines are a little more loose here, as a tournament-style boon).

Each party needs one more PC. Clerics are the most needed but I'm looking at all types of PC's in case of openings elsewhere in my campaign.

This is a very lethal dungeon grind, that challenges the player as much as the character.

Fast paced game, very high posting availability required.

Must be willing to track resources and keep character sheet up to date at all times (nothing gets hand-waived).

Simple initiative.

*20 point buy

List of archetypes in next post.

Dotting for extreme interest. I love a good challenging game.

You say that each group needs 1 more PC. What is the current makeup of each party? I'm thinking about trying the priest class out, but that may change depending on the party makeup.

No stat above 18 after racial adjustment...not use to that restriction but it's easy enough to work around. Although if you were in need of an arcane caster that restriction might make me cry a little haha.

Hmmm... This looks interesting.

I must warn you, however, I'm completely new to the boards/PbP, but I am a decent roleplayer and I've played through many old-school scenarios: one that I can think of off the top of my head is the module path Return of Randyl Morn. I'm thinking an control freak/enabler oracle, who'll be a healbot out of combat. Or perhaps a warrior oracle. Lemme think on it...

Considering an Oracle or Witch. What's Starting level?

Spotty internet today, I will answer your individual questions when I get back.

For now, here is an (incomplete) list of green-lighted archetypes.

Oooh I have a moon caller that would be perfect. Level 3 right? I'll have her up shortly.

Submitting Shauldrek, I'll level him up and finish crunching if selected.

He's going to be a THW-melee/debuffer build.

Survey

*What is your posting availability like? What do you like in terms of pace for PbP?

*How familiar are you with the setting? Have you run or played in Necromancer/FGG modules before?

*How many PbP do you currently participate in? Player or GM?

*What does "Old School" mean to you?

*Would you have still been interested in this campaign if it was CRB only? Why or why not?

*Give a couple specific examples of your all-time favorite images from fantasy artwork.

Inexperience is no problem at all in fact players who haven't played much PFS or Paizo AP's seem to be overwhelmingly more successful in my games for some reason I can't really explain.

I am a little scared you would disappear though, with such a low post count (-_^)

Oracles are very rare, I have zero NPC oracles, and so far only allowed it for a PC who needed it to go into Rage Prophet PrC.

I can usually post everyday. I wok overnight and am online all the time for work. I sleep during the day so may post a bit less after 11 and before 7 or so.

No prior knowledge of the setting but a bit familiar with Necromancer.

I'm currently in at least 7 active PbP's as a player.

Old school- High risk,trap-tacular, dungeon crawling, puzzles, encounteres you should run from from time to time. Everyone gets a chance to shine.

CRB?

Some Caldwell stuff is up there, Todd Lockwood for sure, Brom for the darker stuff.

Gotta hunch you're just spamming me with a character submission without really looking at the campaign or even the character creation guidelines very carefully.

I received a PM from one of my long-time players recommending you as a good player.

CRB=Core Rule Book

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

That's cool, I'm flattered! Fine tuning the character now. (Making adjustments for your specific rules)

Oh and I can adjust for CRB. A couple cool spels lost and would have to pick a different Domain but other than that no biggie.

Hey I'm interested in filling a cleric role. What lvl again?

Haven't announced level, I want to meet players first, characters later.

Oh ok was wondering. well I'm new to pbp and I'm really open to play anything I just want to get on some more action currently i'm in an encounters group. Realizing 1 pbp game isn't enough lol.

Ok so would you rather I didn't present a character as yet? I'm retooling Mikka at level 3.

Oh and in the interest of meeting players first characters later, I like to play in immerse settings with players who enjoy delving into character development and interaction as much as action and adventure.

A good character has goals, feelings, fears and motivations that go beyond the blurb under the Background spoiler.

Nope that's fine I just want people to take a look at what I'm doing here and make sure it's a match for them. I run a different sort of game, it isn't for everyone, I don't want to waste both our time ;)

Howdy there, Mr. Dungeon Man, I sure do like spelunking and what not. Lemme take your little survey here and get acquaintanced with ya.

1) One post a day is my general speed, maybe two if we're running all smooth like. I'm fully capable of posting on weekends.

2) Not even a little familiar with any of that.

3) Right now I'm currently playing in one game, about to join another.

4) Red Box? Booklet style OD&D, back when your class was Elf? My formal introduction to Pen & Paper gaming was 2nd Ed.

5) Core only? Sure, I could've rolled with that. I honestly like to be stripped of all the Aaismars (Spelling), dual-wielding gunslingers and other fiddly bits on occasion. Not to say I don't like fiddly bits.

6) So lately I've found myself extremely enamored with the stylings of Nick Harris, the fantasy artist who worked on Usborne Books "Quest" series. Certain pieces, such as Misery Wood and the Rotten Sewer left serious imprints on me as a child.

An example of the style.
And Another.
And my very favorite.

*What is your posting availability like? What do you like in terms of pace for PbP? I just started in pbp but ever since if i'm not at home on my pc i'm waiting with my facny phone for posts like a kid on christmas. sundays i do play a live game and the dms house has bad service.

*How familiar are you with the setting? Have you run or played in Necromancer/FGG modules before? I'm totally new, but very interested.

*How many PbP do you currently participate in? Player or GM? right now i'm just playing with an encounters group.

*What does "Old School" mean to you? embarrassingly 3.5 but I only started playing when 3.5 was in its prime. Ive always been interested in the older versions and the play style but i've found it hard to find people to play any kind of dnd. that's why I started getting into pbp

*Would you have still been interested in this campaign if it was CRB only? Why or why not? yes don't get me wrong all those crazy out of core stuff are always cool, but the rules in core allow for a simpler streamlined approach to a great game.

*Give a couple specific examples of your all-time favorite images from fantasy artwork. unfortunatly I'm horrible when it comes to media and artwork. I don't even follow memes or music artists let alone the names of the artists of all the fantasy stuff I look at all day. I will say I've all ways loved the artwork for my mtg cards, especially shadowmoor.

  • I work from 6am-2pm during the week and am generally available the rest of the afternoon. I have the opportunity to post several times per day during that time.
  • Somewhat familiar, I've played a short campaign in it.
  • I'm currently in 20 PbP's, 2 of which I DM.
  • The original D&D games where you wanted a low AC. Haven't dabbled in it myself.
  • Probably, I generally like to have a few more options but a good challenging campaign always draws my attention.
  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Halo
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Assassin's Creed

~~~
So the current characters I read through...yeah I could put a priest in with that second group. I'm thinking a sort of meek man who is hitting his midlife crisis and wants to explore before he gets too old to do so. I'll have details up later, heading to work.
Don't adjust it's not going to be core only I was just curious.
  • CampinCarl that's a LOT of games. I know some people can handle a lot of games better than others but I don't want to risk it. I've had too many bad experiences with players with a bajillion games phoning in their posts asking how high the ceiling is when the parties out doors and stuff like that. Sorry.
    Nothing embarrassing about that I'm just asking for the sake of clarity, you know, defining terms.
    Still some fine tuning to do if selected but I present Mikka Windsong, Druid of Freya.
    I can understand your concerns, although if you ask anybody I play with they will reassure you that generally I'm the person who posts quickly and tries to keep things moving along.
    Hmmm... So, my idea (before any crunch) more revolves around an oracle curse than anything else. My character, chosen by powers he cannot understand, is pretty much the ward of lost spirits that for, whatever reason, that cosmic force does not want back in existence. Death would be most appropriate, though really any mystery would work.
    What do you think?
    Ok can I just do agnostic style?
    Oh nvm I found the gods Sefegrath sounds fine
    Yeah I love the site. Freya fit in perfectly with the concept for the character.
    The Exchange
    As another player in DMG's games, I can vouch for Mark Thomas 66 too. I am sure many of the rest are good but he played in my viking game here on the boards.
    cheers
    Ok thanks FW.
    Mark66 give me Mikka's story stuff spoilered in profile like this:
    Background:
    Personality:
    Motivations:
    Short paragraph each, use the obsidian portal for tie-ins to setting or let me know if nothing there inspires there's loads more I haven't uploaded.
    Think we talked about post-rate already but just to reiterate I'm looking for very active participation. I don't like to define this in terms of post/day or posts/week because this is a game not a job, but bottom line I want people who say "oh good, 18 new posts" not people who say "oh no 18 new posts".
    Make sure Mikka has healing and restorative magic they are in short supply.
    Character sheet looks well organized and easy to read but add mini-stat line formatted exactly like the others:
    RACE CLASS X || HP XX/YY | AC:XX Tch:XX FF:XX | CMD:XX | Init:+X | Perc: +X
    Sure thing. And no problem with the post requirements, one of the other games I'm in is past 10,000 posts in the Gameplay thread and we started last March.
    Is there substantially dense forest within 10 miles of Fairhill?
    Dang that's awesome ^^^
    Yeah let me grab you the map link with the miles indicated.
    Stoneheart Valley This one doesn't have the hex overlay.
    Stoneheart Valley North-West
    This one has 6 mile hexes (considering retcon to 5 mi hexes but that's beside the point). As you can see Fairhill is about ten miles away from a small wood with a ruined keep, and about two days travel from a larger wood with a tradeway running through it (but it is a nasty place infested with stirges and the spiders who feed on them).
    There are nicer woods elsewhere but I have to take off right now.
    Thanks, incorporating it.
    Guilty.
    Frankly, I'm tired of completely rehashing characters/creating fully playable characters only to not be selected.
    Like I said, select me and you'll get what you want. If you honestly need more before you can make a selection, give me specifics (i.e. not "the full character" because I've GM'd enough to know that's a load) and I'll get them to you ASAP. You have my word.
    Level 2&3 2d8 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
    I also plan on picking up adept channel at 5th and extra channel at 9th, taking up a lot of the healing slack of a cleric freeing up my spell slots for more useful Druid spells.
    Perfect. Check into discussion Mikka. I'll figure out how to intro you in gameplay later, swamped in work today.
