Dungeon Master S |

Use this channel for:
1. Obnoxiously large crunch (for example this is where I would likely roll random treasure and put the results on the Game play thread.)
2. Discussion items that you always want to have access to. Do NOT use Slack for that, as I don't want to pay for the premium version. Old posts there will eventually be cleared.

Dungeon Master S |

Something else to keep in mind:
1. Skull & Shackles is mostly low level. When plotting out your characters, assume the highest possible level is 15. This can drastically affect some characters (such as those looking at Prestige Classes).
2. All and only Paizo stuff is in play.
3. If you need a quick link to the Player's Guide, HERE IT IS.

As a quick reminder:

This is a Dot. I don't yet have a char name, so no profile. I'm leaning heavily toward a Swashbuckler--the gun-toting kind. More later... (Oh, and this is Mike Susalka)

Dungeon Master S |

Dotting the discussion thread doesn't add it to your campaign tab.

Kiltem Stormcrow |

I'll post something in the main thread about backstory in a bit. It took me a while to remember how to make a new character on Paizo
Joe, we should discuss things further. If we are both going to play druids, we should make sure we cover all the bases and don't make the same guy.

Kiltem Stormcrow |

If you any of you read the little backstory piece, I apologize for making a few mistakes. I did some very poor editing at 0300 hrs.
I originally was going to name my druid Dar, like from the old BeastMaster movie. But I ended up w/ a druid that didn't take an animal companion, so I finally changed the name. But I had written a rough draft of that little story a week or two ago w/ the old name. I thought I had changed all the Dars to Kiltem, but I see that I missed a few.
Sorry
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's characters and the awesome story that will be our S&S adventure.

Kiltem Stormcrow |

Adam spoke of a Slack channel...
I think Chris needs to text/email you a link? So you can open up to the right channel for our S&S game.
Beer sounds pretty awesome by the way. I'm picturing a Halfling wielding an AX that is about twice his size.

Thanks. And yep, that's the idea. Maybe even one in each hand eventually. Still haven't decided how I will ultimately spec him. He's pretty stupid, so it's possible he won't survive, but this is a concept I've wanted to try for a while.

Dungeon Master S |

...i actually have you as in the Slack channel already. I'll drop you the link

Nimble moves is like car insurance. It feels like a waste of an investment.... until you need it.
I don't know the specifics, but difficult terrain is a common obstacle. The ability to take a 5' step is pretty big.

So far this is really awesome. As a GM there are a few things that I really dig at the table:
1. Setting immersion. Golarian is one of the best worlds in all of D&D/Pathfinder. Small touches like a bit of the Red Mantis do it.
2. Riffing. Phil's post to add to Rich's makes an awesome post moreso.
3. High value content. By this I mean something like Jacob's post. SO much happens in a short word count. There's a very high ROI on the post.
For people new(ish) to PbP, I recommend learning the formatting tricks:
Quote:
Quotes are used less often but are mostly useful in replying to something said earlier or to highlight something important that the other players might have missed from earlier.

I'm hoping I can get my character worked out soon enough to join in this opening scene...i know exactly how I'm going to handle it if I can make it!!

Kiltem Stormcrow |

Hey Mike, Delgado looks pretty interesting. I wasn't aware of the picaroon swashbuckler, I'm looking forward to see how it works. The flavor seems pretty perfect for Pirates.
Remember, you get full starting gold (300 gp for your character). Use it all. Alchemical fire, thunderstones, tanglefoot bags, Colt 1911, acid, ect...
Some of that stuff could totally save the party in these low levels.
Dont forget to add your Con modifer to your Fort save

Arthur Cantor Delgado |

equipment is always the slowest for me...i'll spend it, don't worry. Only real problem is there are no fireamrs I can afford. I suppose I could take one of the "extra money" traits. Hey S, can I do that?? :-) pick up a dagger pistol??

Dungeon Master S |

Sure? In the end I don't think they're worth it, but I'm not playing Arthur.

I was originally thinking Black Sails Edward Teach style (cutlass and multiple pistols with quick draw). I think that would be easily feasible (without a build centered on it) if we were playing with the "Commonplace guns" or "Guns Everywhere" rules. But with Very Rare, it makes for a lot of investment (money and feats, etc) for not a lot of bang (pun intended).

Hey everyone, I'm posting my schedule here now, as it affects a large chunk of time.
Thursday August 3 to Monday August 7: I'll be camping in the Green Mountains. I'll have the ability to post once per day, and it'll be with a laptop, so they should be "real" posts. Don't be shy about botting me if I'm a player.
Wednesday August 9 through Friday August 11: I'll be in Cape Cod, and promised Jill I'd unplug for a bit...
Wednesday August 16 through Sunday August 20: I'll be at Gen Con, so posting will be existent, but spotty.
After that it's smooth sailing for a few months with no planned breaks in the works.

Dungeon Master S |

First post in the game calls for you guys to roll dice, so I need Adam to finish up Lucky.

Dungeon Master S |

You pretty much need Spacecraft to identify any magic items.

Advice from a Veteran Paizo message board masochist - I’ll add to this maybe, if I think of anything else:
- If you spend more than a minute or so crafting the perfect post, the messageboard fey-folk will eat your post. Always do a quick [CTRL+A], [CTRL+C] before you hit "Submit".
- Keep a backup of your character somewhere - word doc, handwritten, anywhere. My personal favorite is One Note.
- Make your character sheet profile as detailed as you want, but at a minimum keep it up to date. It helps the DM keep things moving in case he can make a quick check for you, and if another player bots you it makes sure they have access to all your special abilities, feats, gear, etc.
- Use spoilers in your character sheet profile, and don't neglect the fields up top. I like to put my attack action in 'Race' as a spoiler so I can copy/paste it from my phone. [spoiler=The Kegerator]Pwr Atk (FF): [dice]1d20+27[/dice.] for [dice]1d10+14+9[/dice.] damage and [dice=Intimidate DC 10+Target HD+Target Wis Mod]1d20+25[/dice.].[/spoiler.] (I added periods to the closing brackets so it wouldn’t convert). I also use the ‘Class / Level’ box for crunch data like saves, initiative, etc.
- Use hyperlinks in your character sheet or in your posting to help people know what crazy ability you have lined up or have just unleashed.
- Play by post is slow. I’m not suggesting dragging your feet, but give everyone a chance to weigh in before advancing the plot. We all agreed to check and post daily, so let a day go by before you make a group decision, or do something rash. Allow the equivalent someone throwing some Cheetos at the guy playing the rogue across the table and say “Whoa! No way the rogue tries to backstab that thing! Are you nuts?”
- Botting gets easier the longer you play in a group. Just try to match what that guy would do, and use their character sheet to get their crunch right.
- Post in initiative order! Fights can be chaotic and they are a lot of fun. Resist the urge to post ahead of initiative order at all costs. At the top of each combat post, put the round number.
- Make saving throws in the order they are called for.
- Post with flavor and embellishments, reading your posts is 2/3 of my fun.
- Used sparingly, alternate posting personas are cool and add some depth to the campaign. As an example, this is one of my favorite posts I made as Harold the Herald during the Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign while botting Sandor for Joe.
- One of the 'rules of improv' is 'Don't deny the premise' - Taken from a quick search of the interwebs: Denial is the number one reason most scenes go bad. Any time you refuse an Offer made by your partner your scene will almost instantly come to a grinding halt. Example: Player A) "Hi, my name is Jim. Welcome to my store." Player B) "This isn't a store, it's an airplane. And you're not Jim, you're an antelope. This applies to PbP too. Keep things going - but as a caution to others, don't put the other players in an impossible situation by asking them to go along with your absurd plan (at least not before talking to them).
- Intra party conflict sucks. Intra party roleplaying of different points of view is awesome as long as everyone is still having fun. Great example, Sandor had been horribly burned and was dead set against using fire as a weapon. Morkeleb wanted to learn Burning Hands. They hashed it out in character and it was an awesome exercise in character development as they worked through the issue. Important to note: there was a lot of OOC and discussion tab back and forth as Joe (Sandor) made sure Mike (Morkeleb) wasn't mad, and that Sandor's objection wouldn't ruin Morkeleb's character plan.
Maybe if anyone has any more, or wants to edit this for content or verbosity we can make this into a decent primer that can be re-used. idk. if I think of more I'll add it as a reply to this.
Hitting [CTRL+A], [CTRL+C] now, and....

Kiltem Stormcrow |

hyperklinks???
I got one.
READ each others posts. Sometimes we are busy and/or catching up on the game via a tiny phone screen. Try to avoid skimming. At times there are posts or people asking questions about something that was mentioned or talked about three or four posts up.

Kiltem Stormcrow |

I texted w/ Chris earlier before I posted my day's actions. He mentioned he liked having our daily posts "clearly marked". Like
Ship's Action Day
blah blah blah
Ship's Action Night
blah blah blah
Ship's Action Witching Hour
blah blah blah

Dungeon Master S |

Adam that post is EXCELLENT. I'll likely use it a lot with online VOs who are looking to help new players.
Also, Phil is right. Sorry I started this only to promptly go on vacation

Mythweavers has a decent online character sheet template. I link to it in my profile. Saves me a fair amount of time as the math is automatic. I'll be relying on it for rages and such.

Yes until they crash, and loose 80% of saved character sheets... was using it for a very complicated and frequently changing character... and them boom gone many hrs to recreate that crazy cazy character.

Kiltem Stormcrow |

I'm leaving tomorrow morning and will be on vacation till about the 4th. I think I will still be able to check in on the game, though maybe some days it wont happen.
If the game is waiting on me, then someone please post for Kiltem and keep the game moving.

Dungeon Master S |

Looks like we're way behind on tracking XP. It also looks like the campaign records does NOT divide XP automatically, so when I post I'll post XP totals PRE-DIVIDED.

Slappy Wundershart |

Question concerning XP.
I take it all XP rewards have been party, or are there individual awards? Makes it so much easier if they are all party.
I can also work on the sheet if you need me to to get the XP divided properly.

Dungeon Master S |

I'll have to go back and look. I try to make the language clear. Any time it's 20, that's per person.

Dungeon Master S |

Just a heads up, I'll be AFK from 1500 EST today until about 2000 EST Monday. I'll be able to sneak in a post a day, but that's likely it.

"Lucky" Lucas D'Endrin |

Harvey is a jerk, and Irma is threatening to be equally troublesome. Sorry for my slow posts.

Dungeon Master S |

Hey guys, starting from about 2100 EST tonight until Saturday noon, I'm in 1 post per day territory. I'll try to make that post in the afternoon so others have enough time. By Saturday night I'll be back to normal.
