Just over 100 years ago, a little-known Halfling by the name of Bartholamew Beechnut lived in the sleepy town of Hillwatch. Barty enjoyed what most Halflings enjoyed: food, beer, mischief, beer, singing, and beer. Did I mention he REALLY enjoyed beer?? He enjoyed beer so much that when a Dwarven brewer passed through the town, Barty somehow wrested from him some of his brewing secrets. (How he achieved this is a story for another time . . .) The intrepid Halfling became fascinated with the science and art of brewing—and the joy of both partaking in his own creations, and sharing them with his friends. He began making a name for himself as a brewer, and took seriously the suggestion of one friend to start up a business. He took a few casks of his best and most imaginative libations to a few stops along the Elsir Vale river, and was greeted with universal approval by all who tried them. So pleased was he with his success that he decided to go full-bore into his new business. He even changed his surname to better suit his new career, and the Beerswizzler Clan was born.
Four generations later, the Beerswizzlers are still brewing in Hillwatch. The Beerswizzler’s path to modest wealth hasn’t been without bumps, however. The third generation Beerswizzler Brewmaster, Bozak, tried to make headway into the city of Brindol with his wares. He was approached by the ruling merchant family, the Kaals, to pay the requisite “fees” (protection money) in order to operate within the walls. Bozak was a fine brewer, but lacked the diplomacy of more genteel folk, and laughed in the Kaals’ faces. There ensued a most undignified shouting match, and even some posturing and shoving (during which Bozak’s nimble fingers managed to surreptitiously liberate a very fine amulet inscribed with the Chellish symbol from one of the Kaals). The resulting bad blood between the Kaals and the Beerswizzlers is ongoing, particularly since the Kaals suspect Bozak of the theft but have never been able to prove it. The current Brewmaster, Boris, has three sons. His youngest, Bofus, learned the trade as do all in the Clan—but since he has two older brothers already jockeying for position to be the next Brewmaster, Bofus’ attention was drawn to other things (“Don’t tell my father, but I'm only just now acquiring a taste for beer!”). He possesses the renowned Halfling traits of curiosity and wanderlust as strongly as any and stronger than most, and he’d begun taking to escorting the wagons of the Beerswizzler brew to their destinations. This allowed him to see “new places” (while most of the towns the Beerswizzlers sell to are small, they’re all much bigger than Hillwatch). It also gave ample opportunity to learn and practice a few tricks for which Halflings are rather infamous: relieving folks of burdensome excess coin; challenging himself by puzzling a way through locked doors and chests; hiding from people who chase him for no apparent reason; talking his way out of sticky situations that he somehow finds himself in through no fault of his own, that sort of thing. During one such escorting job, he heard from an emissary passing through the area of the upcoming Elsir Vale’s Tournament of Heroes. He managed to coerce the emissary to observe his skills at sleight of hand, and the emissary (a dwarf by the name of Harnac Lucridius, or “Hal”) was impressed enough to write his Letter of Sponsorship to the competition. Because the competition is taking place in the town the Kaals call home, Bofus had Hal write the letter to sponsor one “Bofus Beechnut” to conceal his identity from his clan’s foes. None of the Kaals knew Bofus personally, so as long as he hid the Beerswizzler name, what could go wrong? The danger of entering the tournament amidst his enemies made the whole deal that much more delicious! Group Pot:
