Hmmm, not sure about this one... It sounds like the perfect thing for her, but as far as IC... Raun would not exactly be keen to go sticking something psionic into her forehead.

She does more or less trust Nnn though, she is aware that he makes her tougher sometimes; even if she's not usually conscious of it at the time (and prefers it that way). Maybe if Nnn explains a bit more about what these items are (and me too since I have no idea what these actually are in the lore) then she could be convinced to try it. I think the idea of a kindred spirit working with her and giving her advice (if I'm interpreting things correctly) would probably appeal to her (and works with her Spirit Totem theme). Charisma would also help her spirit totem and intimidate.

Also, I don't think I've said anything in this thread yet. I have just started a new course running full day wed-fri. I will do my best to keep up my posting, but it may be a bit sluggish in the latter half of the week until I adjust, and wednesdays I will likely be unable to post as I go from the course to my weekly RL game in the evening. I may be able to sneak something in during breaks if it doesn't require me to look up rules or anything like that.

I'm kind of curious myself what these things are. Some super-enhanced psicrystals?

Y'know, I think Gorkhan can toss some of his extra weapons on the pile to sell (since he has the longsword and his bard's gift). I dunno, I figured it's inefficient to carry a bunch of weapons he'll likely never use. So the Tembo Sword, Bone Hand Fork, Obsidian Dagger.

Come to think of it we should probably purchase regular gear. Looks like I'm sitting around with blankets with leather straps to use as some kind of carrying device.

Question on the punisher's ring: It acts like the owner was wearing a gauntlet +1. Is that meant to be a spiked gauntlet, brass knuckles or some other item that won't provoke an AoO?

Some more info on the reliquaries: They were inspired by a similar item from one of the early non-Prism Pentad novels from the Dark Sun line, called "The Darkness Before the Dawn."

(On a side note, I re-read all the DS novels last summer while prepping for the game. While I remember really digging the Prism Pentad and Tribe of One series as a teenage, neither aged particularly well, due to the generally crappy prose and poor character development. Some of the unrelated "Chronicles of Athas" books were much better, especially the Lynn Abbey stuff - which, ironically, got a lot of criticism at the time for relatively minor canon conflicts).

Anyway, the protagonists in the novel found a couple of psionic crystals that contained little pocket planes, at least one of which contained an entity that thought of itself as a god - the pocket planes would shape to the occupant's will, so it was all powerful in its limited domain.

The reliquaries are the same basic idea, pretty much psionic soul stones that can house a being's consciousness even after physical death. The Warden, Champion, et al. can only perceive the outside world when in contact with a "real" person, either through a psionic mindlink or by being bonded physically as Nnn did with the Warden.

That lets them ride along and perceive what the bonded partner does, but they can't directly affect things other than talking to the partner and providing some subtle boosts (enhancement bonuses, other minor effects).

The Warden's stone grants a +2 enhancement bonus to Wisdom and Constitution (it was either/or, but has grown stronger) and a bonus to saves and PP. The Champion's stone grants a +2 bonus to Strength and Charisma and has a minor power related to mind-affecting status effects.

Dote Mal Payne's notes that you found in the underground library in the Maw indicate he has the Seeker's stone (you found the Seeker's tomb in the Maw, as well - Raun claimed her helmet and war-belt, and you mended her steel sword and sold it to Lord Sanet, the nobleman).

Also, @Gorkhan: You count as armed and deal lethal damage when wearing the ring - you do not provoke AoOs.

And yes, some of you are still looking pretty ragged. I think Gorkhan actually appropriated some decent clothes along the way, but Raun is still barefoot and probably wearing burlap sacks stitched together.

I recall much of this "History" from my days of reading anything Dark Sun while in college. Some of it was from Sea of Dust books (Or at least they were about the sea of dust - Its been a long time. ) if I recall.

Girt actually purchase MW leathers to wear from the dwarves so he is good, clothing wise.

Nnn is wearing clothes of burlap-level quality at the moment. as time passes i think he will take a liking to clothes, being distrustful in a hostile town.

And armor! She is a barbarian though, so that's all she really needs :p I doubt she'd be all that interested in clothing, but I guess some nice flowing hot weather type gear would work well enough if we end up going on a shopping trip. Assuming we don't have to flee the town ahead of an army of templars anyway.

So that reliquary sounds awesome, just need to figure out how to get Raun to accept it. Talking to the Champion might help depending on his disposition (I haven't actually read the spoilers)

Sorry for the delay folks. Work has been very busy, so I haven't been able to post as much during the day, and I have a wedding and other things going on this weekend. I will get a post up RE interactions with the Champion tonight or tomorrow.

I'd appreciate if everyone would at least check in here, even when you feel you don't have something to add in the gameplay thread, so I know the group is ready to move ahead. Otherwise I see only one or two people posting and have no way of knowing if the rest are available and engaged.

Sorry 'bout that. I've been very busy the last couple of days. I also hadn't posted to gameplay in response to meeting the bard since I wasn't sure about the 30 gp thing (it sounded fishy on first glance) and didn't have time to go back to double check. I'm glad Grit noticed.

EDIT to add that I'm also unfamiliar (as I've likely forgotten them) with the details of the agreements we've had with these folks.

Yea. The pace of PBP is such that I have a hard time remembering details, especially since I am in a good dozen games at once. Things tend to merge together over time.

I actually take notes when things get complicated. But I always overestimate my ability to remember details. I should just take notes on every game I am in. Let me write that down… :P

Will post this evening after school :)

From memory the deal was a 20GP deposit, and we had to retrieve a ring or amulet from the belly of some horrible monster who ate the companion of the thief who told thuffir about the way into the noble's belly. Possibly there was something the bard wanted and also something the thief wanted, I can't recall.

Thanks all. To be clear, I didn't mean to be b&!~~y - Real Life has been crazy in my neck of the woods, as well. It just helps to know if folks are busy or ready and waiting.

Also, the "Search This Thread" function at the top of each of the campaign threads (Gameplay is separate from Discussion) are very helpful - I use them all the time to review previous NPC conversations, lore, etc. Just pop in "Thuffir" or "Nell" or "Dote Mal Payne" and up pops a list of relevant posts.

I also try to recap things when it's been a while, and can do more of that if needed.

Found the post in question.

Quote:

"Now, as it happens, I have located someone who has ventured where you wish to go," he says. "This man is, shall we say, an explorer ... of other people's houses. He assures me he can get you into the tunnels beneath the Nobles' Quarter. In return, he wants you to retrieve something."

Thuffir looks apologetic.

"Apparently this man and his partner ran afoul of a rather large beast in the depths. This man escaped, his partner did not. The man was apparently very fond of his partner, and wants only to retrieve a pendant the other man wore ... a pendant likely still in the belly of the beast that killed him."

"Also in the belly of that beast - within the Belly of the Noble, aha! - is a rather large gemstone the men had appropriated from a house in the district above. That gem is rather valuable, and will serve as the second half of my finder's fee. The first half, due when you wish to enter the tunnels, is 20 gold pieces, or the equivalent in silver."

Thuffir leans back, expectantly.

"What say you? Do we have a deal?"

So Thuffir got the first half of his finder's fee in the 20 gold (or rings in this case). He wants a gem that the two thieves were stealing from a house in the Noble district for the second half of his fee. At the same time, he's getting a strawberry on his whipped cream by also asking for the return of a pendant for the surviving thief that will no doubt earn Thuffir more money. Both pendant and gem are currently in the belly of some monster that ate the other thief.

M Mul - Dwarf and Human, raised by dwarves Druid 10 | AC 26, Touch 15, FF 24 | HP 110/110+0 temp | F +14, R +9, W +15, +2 vs. disease, Immune to poison | Init +3 | Perception +17, Darkvision

That is mostly right Woki. We negotiated with Thuffir and he has agreed to refund the 20 gold (rings) when/if we retrieve both the pendant and the gem. Grit made a decent Sense motive to see if he plans to keep his word (a 27) but have not heard the result of that.

Watch the gem be the third psicrystal (was it the Watcher?). Then we'd have some decisions (particularly if both the gem and pendant are worth much more than 20-40 gold).

Hey Daina, I just realized/remembered how nice Mage Armor would be for Grit in animal form. He looses all shield and armor bonuses when he shifts. That is currently 10 points of armor. Maybe he should look into a wand of Mage Armor for you, or at least a Pearl of Power so you can cast the spell on him at your caster level. Thoughts?

Sorry for the delay folks. I've PMed Raun and Daina to see if they are available to post - I'd rather not move along until everyone is participating, as it's going to be an extra difficult fight without the full group.

I'm also out of town at another workshop. That won't prevent me from posting most of the time but it may slow me down a bit. I'll try to keep things rolling as best as possible - your posting will help that.

I'm going to move discussion of the summoning issue here to avoid cluttering up the gameplay thread further.

Yes, not being able to summon outsiders like a lantern archon does reduce flexibility and, in this particular situation, makes summoning less useful, but it's not crippling. Every other class has to deal with similar limitations - inferior weapons and armor, limited choice domains, etc. - and I don't think the modified summoning list is any more significant than that.

As outlined in the original recruitment thread for this game, I am trying to emulate the 2E feel of Dark Sun. Occasionally that means modifying the PF rules and sacrificing some options to match the source material.

Outsiders are almost non-existent on Athas, and can be summoned with only the most powerful magic. Undead are rare and unpredictable and scary. Removing outsiders from the summoning list supports both of those things, which I see as a feature, not a flaw. You can't summon outsiders. You can summon elementals and magical versions of animals described in the campaign tab, but I'm not inclined to force in a replacement for the lantern archon for purely mechanical reasons.

Female Half Elf Arcanist 9 | AC 14, Touch 14, FF 11 | HP 68/68 | F +7, R +8, W +7 (All +4 vs psionics) | Init +5 | Perc +15

Ok, that makes sense, especially with the comparison. Thanks for explaining DM. I wonder if there would be any chance of doing research to find out about them...

Any future research would be predicated on surviving this encounter with the quite dangerous undead. :)

Research on undead? Sure. Research on outsiders? Less likely, as any outsiders present on Athas (other than those with elemental ties) got here as the result of an arcane fluke, epic-level magic or some other campaign-level event. If you do meet one, it will not be friendly.

Also, I'm running around today but will get a post up in the gameplay section this afternoon, with or without Raun.

Actually Raun got it right. One of the House Rules for the game was that you don't get an extra attack at +6, you get Vital Strike feat for free instead. You get a extra attack as normal at +11 BAB, and then Improved Vital Strike (or Greater if you already have Improved) at +16.

Apologies for the future headaches this action will undoubtedly cause, it was too much fun to write though and seemed the only appropriate reaction for a raging half-giant who can't take her frustrations out on a suitable foe.

Also Daina, the room's full of obscuring cloud, and they're around a corner, might cause some issues for watching the fight :p You can probably guess where Raun's gone though, she wasn't exactly being quiet.
