Hey everyone(Entymal, WarforgedMan, AmBarbaian, Louxman, Donto, Snowheart, Corsario) to the Rise of the Runelords campaign. Here is our dicussion thread. For those not used to how things run here this is where we keep most(if not all) of the out of character postings. You will also post here if you are going to be unavailable to post for a few days(more on that below).
Let me start off by saying this is going to be a very large wall of text post. I appologize for this
Just to get this out of the way I'm going to lay down some ground rules for the group, in a spoiler for organizational purposes, please read anyway:
1) These are family friendly boards we're posting on so any adult content should be kept to a minimum. There are opportunities for your characters to act as sexual beings in this adventure path, when those events happen, things will be set up and then fade to black. Also I am all for describing actions in combat but keep the violent and graphic descriptions to a minimum.
2)Please see the spoiler below for character creation guidelines.
3)If you can not post please let us know here so we can adjust if needed. If you disappear I will bot your character for a while but after a while you will be booted from the game(say 3 weeks). I understand emergencies happen and can be unforeseen so if you are gone for an extended period with out notice and want to rejoin a game please PM me and we can discuss it.
4)I am available to post during the week pretty much exclusively. I have a wife and family that demand my attention on the weekend. I will check in on the discussion threads and possibly the game play threads if things need brief posts but these will be made from my phone and thus will be limited.
5)I would like for each of you to post at least once per day Monday-Friday. If you can do more great, if not please do your beast and keep rule 3 in mind. This game does not happen with out posts so please do what you can when you can.
6)Combats are a big pain in the ass in this format and will be discussed at a later date. I have a system that works for the most part and will be following it but its to clunky to post here now and isn't relevant until we get to our first combat which might be much later.
Character Creation Guidelines can be found below, also in a spoiler for organizational purposes but please read them.
-We will be using the anniversary edition
-Characters are level 1
-Average starting wealth
-Classes from Core, APG, UM, UC, ACG, and Unchained are acceptable.
-Standard races would be prefered, but I will consider things from the ARG based on background and strength of argument for why this race should be allowed.
-NO third party publishing sources allowed!
-All other Paizo splat books will be allowed
-Race traits, feats, magic items, and alternate class features from the ARG are allowed but you can not build your own custom race.
-2 traits one of which has to be a campaign trait from the Anniversary edition Rise of the Runelords players guide.
-20 point buy with no stat above 18 or below 10 before racial adjustment.
Now for backgrounds I'm going to be doing something a little different that I stole from another poster here that I have found works wonders for plot hooks and getting people tied into the campaign. See the spoiler below on how I want you guys doing backgrounds. All this is to help you and me tell a compelling story not only you, but any who read our adventure, will enjoy. If this is asking too much, let me know.
1) I'd like 5+ points that capture the concept and story of the character. More are welcome, but no less than five.
2) Two goals that you'd like the character to accomplish in-game.
3) Two secrets, one the PC keeps to himself, and one kept from the PC. I'll come up with a third that both the character and player aren't aware of, in hopes of shocking surprises within the storytelling.
4) 3-5 people that are tied to your PC by blood, love, rivalry, honor, etc. I'd like at least one enemy in a set of three or four, with no more than two for a set of five.
5) Three key memories that define your character as the person they are at the time of submission.
-Finally, I'd like you to include with your submission a fear or paranoia that causes your character to shiver, cower, or panic. Anything from spiders to unexplained happenstance, but I'm sure you'll all come up with some awful stuff on your own.
Next I want to touch on my availability. As I mentioned before I am a graduate student and married and also work 25 hours a week. I am taking an almost full load this semester. I work from 8 AM-1:30 PM CST(GMT-6) Monday-Friday(with some exceptions that vary by week) and am in class from 3:30-7 PM CST(GMT-6) Monday and Wednesday. I am getting my masters in mathematics which means my homework consists of writing proofs, which I spend about 15-20 hours a week doing. I will most likely be posting from work 90% of the time but might post outside of work hours from my phone of something is quick and easy to post.
In the interest of respecting rules 3 and 5 I have exams coming up on Wednesday 2/22 and Monday 2/27 so my posting on those days and possibly leading up to them will more than likely be limited to once a day or quick posts. This also means I should probably be studying for the Real Analysis exam on Wednesday rather than writing this wall of text post but oh well lol.
Finally I want to say thanks for baring with my HUGE wall of text post and welcome aboard. We will have fun from here on out I just needed to get the business stuff out of the way so its out there and understood and should hopefully not need to be mentioned again.
If you have any questions please feel free to post them here or PM me. And you guys can feel free to use this thread now to discuss character builds or what ever you want, its your discussion thread.

Thanks for setting this up. Sounds like you've got a full load on your plate. Good luck on exams! (I've got a 14 month old son, so I understand the whole "less time on weekends" thing.)
A few questions:
1. To confirm, we are not using hero points. Correct?
2. Would an aasimar cleric (ecclesitheurge) be okay? Based on comments in the other thread, it doesn't seem like anyone is jumping at being a divine caster and I haven't done that in a while, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. If aasimar is not okay, I can certainly work with another race.
3. Keeping in mind Rule #1 and the PG rating, I wanted to run the following by you. I was thinking about a cleric of Calistria (toying with the idea of male, actually, just to throw a wrench in the works). I have no trouble keeping things family-friendly but, as she is one of the more "explicit" gods, I could also go with a cleric of Abadar if you think there's too much of a risk there for PG-13/R-rated stuff.
4. Any preferences for how we present our stats? I've seen people handle it different ways with different templates.
5. How soon would you like characters and backstories submitted for approval?

Thank you for having us Mathpro!
Looking forward to playing with you all.
This coming week is half term break here, meaning my kids and I have a week off. My posting may be brief until I'm back at work.
As for character concept: I'm looking to run an indiana jones-y rogue/bard/swashbuckler type, he is an explorer and trader in old thassilonian(sp?) Artifacts. But is down on his luck and is currently trying to drink Sandpoint dry. That's what I'm throwing around anyway. What's everyone else thinking?

1) Yes we will be using hero points but you won't be starting with any and i don't want you taking feats for more or any of that stuff. Max is 3 and they will be rewarded as I see fit(usually as a bribe to get you guys to do something I don't want to to be honest lol).
2)Yes that fits in perfect actually! I'll be PMing you shortly with some behind the scenes info and it may lead to fitting some stuff into your background if your willing of course.
3)Cleric of Calistria is fine and extra tasty considering the information coming in PM. I think this is going to be REALLY fun if we can work out some details.
4)If you have hero lab please just copy and paste the information into your alias.
5)I'd like to get this up and running by Monday if possible if thats to soon for some people we'll work with it.

Can we take a drawback for an additional trait?
I'm going with an Elven admixture wizard. Fascinated by the various forms of magic used in ancient Thassilon, he has come to Sandpoint to study the ruins and see if he can uncover any new tricks or lore. Meanwhile, a festival is just the thing to break up the monotony.
Not one to waste valuable study time on combat, he focuses on blasting enemies down as quickly as possible so he can get back to the business of gaining more knowledge.
My weekends are also largely taken up with family concerns, but I'll have this done by Monday evening at the latest.

Sounds great and yes you can take a drawback for an additional trait. If you can get your hands on the players guide for the anniversary edition(I think its found there) there is an archetype for wizard that I think would fit beautifully listed in it. It might be in the actual hardcover book though...I'll look later.

WarforgedMan |

Two questions!
1) Are we doing background skills at all?
2) If we play a fighter, are we getting access to the Combat Stamina feat for free to help make them stand out a bit more.
I'd love to play a monk but they're a little to MAD for me to want to do with the rules we have. I think I'm going to go with an Unchained Rogue, I'll look at archetypes and such this weekend and have something made up soon!

![]() |

Thanks for the game Mathpro!
Ok team... seeing what you are planning, what do you think is best (the aliases are for "character concept/history" not fleshed out yet):
- A Shoanti meat-shield warrior?
- A Varisian Ranger?
- A Dwarf Paladin?
- An Aasimar unchained Summoner?
- A wild young human Druid?

Fyn Sil'forrin |

@ Corsario:
So far, we've got:
* Human Barbar (Trinam/Barbarian A Barbarian) (lol)
* Fighter/Monk type (Warforged)
* Elf admixture wizard (Entymal/Lemnis)
* Aasimar cleric (SnowHeart/me)
* TBD Bard/Swashbuckler/Skill-Monkey (Louxman)
* TBD (Corsario)
* TBD (Donto)
So, we've likely got two dedicated fighters, two dedicated casters, a skill monkey... That leaves a lot of flexibility for you to do whatever is fun for you, I would think. I've got a soft spot for summoners, personally, but I think Fyn would love to have a (dour?) dwarven paladin in the party. ("Oh, come on, darling... it's not like I stabbed him in the back with a dagger after charming him... it was just a little crossbow bolt. Besides, he'd have shook the charm eventually. This way, he thinks he died among friends. I did him a favor, really.")

Barbarian A. Barbarian |

We even have Bard covered. A bard in a party like this is a hugely amazing force multiplier made of destruction and good times.
Also Corsario, if you go druid or summoner, there is a nonzero chance that at some point while wild shaped or something Barbarian will try riding either the PC or the PC's summon into battle.

Barbarian A. Barbarian |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

imo, the question is if you want the extra action economy of having a summon AND yourself versus having the bonus of having a full 9 levels of spells at their earliest possible unlock points.
There's strong arguments for both, especially if you plan on playing the buff game.
EDIT:Also perception, the god stat, is keyed off of one of the Druid's main stats and also a class skill for them. Summoners make better faces with diplomancy and bluffardry and intimidatrixing.
Secondary EDIT: ...wait, animal companions.
YEAH UH, Druid seems mechanically superior here in 92 situations out of 100.

Barbarian A. Barbarian |

"BARBARIAN FUNCTION AS PARTY FACE, BY WHICH BARBARIAN MEAN PUT LANCE THROUGH FACES AT PARTY."
...yeah, don't let me do the talking. Just don't.

Fyn Sil'forrin |

So, my background is done (subject to GM Mathpro's approval), but after reading a bit I think I'm going to dump the archetype, which will mean tweaking my stats a bit. Ah well. Just when I had everything formatted.
Likely switching to just a straight-up cleric (sans archetype). Considering dumping the channel energy but with this many bodies in melee I'm thinking it might actually be more viable than usual. Anyway... open to thoughts/suggestions, but that's the direction I'm leaning.

Lemnis Recinsier |

Coincidentally, I'm also exiled from Kyonin, though voluntarily. The details are still fuzzy, but I was wrongly accused of a crime and a long trial ensued. I was eventually cleared, but the ordeal was costly and traumatizing. I couldn't bear to remain in an area where such allegations could be so casually levied, and I no longer trust others like I once did. Getting out of the country to study ancient lore is a treat compared to Kyonin politics.
I took the Betrayed drawback.

Barbarian A. Barbarian |

I took unlearned because the idea of Barbarian having no idea what any god, ever is just amused me. Also, he wouldn't know liches either.
"BARBARIAN AM PRETTY SURE THAT CASTY JUST SORT OF CRUNCH MORE THAN OTHER CASTYS. AM PROBABLY NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT."
"N-no, Barbarian, there's a phylactary and we have to break it or--"
"WHY NOT TELL BARBARIAN THERE AM EXTRA FOR SMASHING? TIME FOR SMASHING."

1) No
2) Yes thats fine. I think fighters are attractive enough on their own but this helps.
Fyn Sil'forrin |

Does Fyn wear the usual yellow and black? I almost said FAVORITE BEE, but I didn't know so I should ask for future reference.
LOL. Yes, but he's kind of inverted the colors, so black is primary and yellow is secondary. (Figure pretty close to the avatar image.) Black cloak with yellow hems and embroidery, but slits at the shoulder so his arms are freely at his side. Assuming it wouldn't cost extra, his leather armor is probably stained black, too.

DM Mathpro |
Reviewing characters now.
Just a reminder...posting is going to be spotty for the next week or so due to exams and I have homework due today that I didn't get done this weekend so I need to cram that in before work. Thankfully i don't start until 10:30 today which helps...but other than my review of characters and initial posts for Uli and Lemnis don't expect to see me on much.

donato Contributor |

Sorry for showing up late! Weekends eat my time up as well, so I'm glad we're mostly a M-F kind of thing. I'm best available to post during my work (call centers are godsends for wasting time online) which is between 7 AM-4 PM CST(GMT-6).
As for my character, I think I'm going either oracle or investigator, depending on what seems a better fit for the group overall.
Edit: I just saw we are lacking another frontline fighter, so I might actually swing towards a vanilla fighter. :)

Fyn Sil'forrin |

Mathpro, in light of your schedule, I'm wondering if it makes sense to not try to cram in a full convo with Esmond, or maybe handle it retroactively after your done with exams. To "get the gang together" without needing your full attention, I'm thinking Fyn will make plans to meet Edmond later, follow Barbarian in to the Hagfish intending just to make sure he doesn't get into too much trouble, then head to the Pixie's Kitten to get a bed and maybe some gossip from the madam.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
=================================================
Animal Companion (Ex)
Bonus Feat Humans select one extra feat at 1st level.
Humanoid Traits (Ex) Humanoids breathe, eat, and sleep.
Nature Bond (Ex) At 1st level, a druid forms a bond with nature. This bond can take one of two forms. The first is a close tie to the natural world, granting the druid one of the following cleric domains: Air, Animal, Earth, Fire, Plant, Water, or Weather. When determining the powers and bonus spells granted by this domain, the druid's effective cleric level is equal to her druid level. A druid that selects this option also receives additional domain spell slots, just like a cleric. She must prepare the spell from her domain in this slot and this spell cannot be used to cast a spell spontaneously. The second option is to form a close bond with an animal companion. A druid may begin play with any of the animals listed in the Animal Companions section beginning on page 51. This animal is a loyal companion that accompanies the druid on her adventures. Unlike normal animals of its kind, an animal companion's Hit Dice, abilities, skills, and feats advance as the druid advances in level. If a character receives an animal companion from more than one source, her effective druid levels stack for the purposes of determining the statistics and abilities of the companion. Most animal companions increase in size when their druid reaches 4th or 7th level, depending on the companion. If a druid releases her companion from service, she may gain a new one by performing a ceremony requiring 24 uninterrupted hours of prayer in the environment where the new companion typically lives. This ceremony can also replace an animal companion that has perished.
Nature Sense (Ex) You gain a +2 bonus on Knowledge (Nature) and Survival skill checks.
Orisons You can prepare a number of orisons, or 0-level spells. These spells are cast like any other spells, but they are not expended when used and may be used again.
Reactionary You were bullied often as a child, but never quite developed an offensive response. Instead, you became adept at anticipating sudden attacks and reacting to danger quickly. You gain a +2 trait bonus on Initiative checks.
Skilled Humans gain an additional skill rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.
Spontaneous Casting You can channel stored spell energy into summoning spells that you haven't prepares ahead of time. You can "lose" any prepared spell in order to cast any Summon Nature's Ally spell of the same spell level or lower
Wild Empathy
Wild Empathy (Ex) You can improve the attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like Diplomacy check made to improve the attitude of a person. You roll 1d20+1 to determine the Wild Empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly. To use Wild Empathy, you and the animal must be within 30 feet of one another under normal circumstances. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but as with influencing people, it might take more or less time. You can use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but you take a -4 penalty on the check.
