Kintargo has been taken over by the forces of Hell!
Barzillai Thrune has the city in his clutches, will heroes arise and suceed in guiding the resistance against the tyrant or will they fall as so many others before of them?

She looks around the group.
"While I couldn't speak, someone who knows ventriloquism.... could speak safely in my place."
Elurius smiles at the idea of doing disguises and gives a twirl, tugging on her sleeves as she does she turns into a much shorter old man haggard and drawn. In a deeper, almost tenor she sings ♫"I could go! They'd never know it was me, except for maybe my lovely voice and rhymes."♫
Bokar snorts as the group leaves, "You're right to worry. Unfortunately, despite your best efforts to remain unknown, word has gotten around of your deeds. Your success speaks for itself, gaining allies in the Torrent and Sargaeta, and killing the murderer, Wrex. When hope floods the streets the name of the Ravens comes up. Your identities are still secret, but your organization is one of the most open secrets in Kintargo."
"That is what we want. We cannot help the city by ourselves. The city itself must rise up if we are to accomplish our goals. Inspiring the populous is needed, but our identities must remain a secret until it can no longer be helped."
"I could stay hidden and send Kurglunn in as a representative. If there's trouble, I could just call him back in here," Rocco taps at the side of his head. "I definitely don't like the idea of sending in some lambs for the slaughter in our place, but I agree we have to keep ourselves out of Thrune's clutches."

Elurius pauses and then gives a wicked smile, ♫"My illustrious personage couldn't join, but if we have Lirotha set up a message spell with Kurglunn we could possibly tell him what to say. Or help Rocco with that if we can't get the spell to stick on the ghost. Val could be a pair of eyes on the rooftops or flying over head, Rocco and I could be hidden in the crowd, maybe with Lirotha and Oren too, if we're willing to risk it."♫
Your group occasionally gets weird looks with the small group of elves being led by yourselves and Bokar, but you otherwise make it back to base unmolested.
Once everybody is bedded down and comfy, Lirotha will call a leadership meeting to respond to Thrune.
"I have had another idea. A better one. I've been thinking of this meeting Thrune has requested, and I think this is an opportune moment to shove his offer where the sun doesn't shine."
She looks around with dramatic effect.
"We hit THEM HARD. Somewhere when we strike, it will be felt across the entire city and will be hard for them to respond to while his 'meeting' is going on. We can safely assume a lot of his forces will be concentrated there. Let's let the city know where we stand since our enemy is now convinced of our existence. Now...suggestions? Where should we hit. Something spectacular. Epic almost...but not overly dangerous. I don't think attacking a heavily fortified location would be smart...but a lightly guarded, out of the way place? Maybe a place where prisoners or slaves are being held? Something like that... Speak up. What should we hit?"
GM Fez? Are there any obvious locations that would stand out for a quick hit and run attack?
My research through the first three books doesn't give me anything that Thrune owns. I'll also be upfront here, the books assume you guys are nowhere near as sneaky as you have been and that Thrune already knows your names and faces. The populace also knows, which I didn't realize until reading through the rest of the adventure over the weekend, and results in this big ceremony as a PR move on his part. Discuss some more plans while I try to come up with something.

”Maybe we go in disguises and hope for the best. Would he truly try to strike us down in front of the whole city? Or maybe I could lead our acrobat troupe in disguises and appear as the Ravens? The rest of you could observe and make sure any hijinks are kept to a minimum. If we didn’t show, could he use that to make sure appear cowardly,” Oren asks, clearly conflicted on the best course forward.
"Even if he personally guaranteed complete safety, I would not trust one of Thrune's underlings not to 'disobey' and try to attack us. No...I've heard enough bad things about a Devil's bargain to know to stay away from them completely. Religious zealots care not for earthly punishments if their goals are met in the afterlife or beyond. You all must trust me on this...we cannot show up or we play directly into his hands. He has this all planned out. The only way to stay free and alive is to avoid it entirely."
Thinking for a moment, Lirotha riases a target.
"We could attack one of the city's barracks. There should be several scattered about the city. Most should be fairly empty while the 'gathering' happens. Let's strike one of them? Set it on fire or something. Or just play a prank and leave some garden oozes or something around the place."

Elurius stops and pauses to think. ♫"I like the idea of pranking. But let's prank the event! Show that we heard the call but we aren't going to do what Thrune asks us to. Better than hurting the possibly innocent guards and risking loosing support from family and friends of the guards."♫
"Not guards. Soldiers. They are not from the city. They came here with Thrune or were posted here as part of Cheliax's army or navy. Most are hated and feared, but they are just people who worship devils to me. I say let them meet their vile Hell-scape sooner than later for defending that idiotic queen and her devil-god. Also, I don't want any of us anywhere near that event. All it will take is for them to hoist out some 'hostages' and threaten them unless we give up...and one of us might fold. We just can't take the chance. My guess is Thrune will have a powerful devil somewhere on hand in disguise, keeping an eye out too, in order to handle 'disturbances' quickly. What about that hard to kill warrior woman with the hell-hound I've heard about? I can guarantee she'll be there too."

Elurius pauses at Lirotha's words. ♫"Right, now that is a good idea! I hadn't thought about hostages, and if we were obviously somewhere else, if Thrune takes hostages it won't hurt our reputation while dragging his into the mud even further.... Now would it be greedy of me to suggest we prank a few barracks instead of just one?"♫
"Whatever it is we do, it should make a statement and only affect Thrune personnel directly. We will do our best not to hurt innocents, but neither can what we do be dismissed as just a joke. We mean business and need to make sure the city understands we will not be intimidated into giving up, or be tricked into a show of weakness or for Thrune's benefit either. We MUST think 'faster', 'better', and 'smarter' than that egomaniac at every step if we are to remain undercover and survive this rebellion."
She shakes her head almost sadly.
"It is a fine line, but we do NOT want to cross it completely. Ideas? Harmless pranks are out. We could summon some minor monsters, then block the doors from outside? That should contain the destruction...which should be minor to decent in the end. Maybe we can purchase some scrolls of summoning from the Professor quickly? I dare say he might have some on hand easily enough. A good sized Earth elemental is tough to kill and can damage property pretty easily,a nd won't set the place to blaze too easily."

If we can get the timing right we could give Thrune and everyone watching information about what we just did to barracks Alpha-Alpaca or whatever. Give the people a very public symbol, undermines what ever Thrune is planning with the meeting, and undermines the power all at the same time, without putting who we are on display!"♫
Elurius has suggestion as a spell known and could cast it enough times for one of them to stick.
I don't have any perfect ideas, but we need to do so something. If any of you have a better idea, please say so. Would a Knowledge (Local) roll give us some better ideas of where or how we might strike at Thrune and his flunkies?
Here's the best I can do: DC 13 Kn. (Local) check to open up one of the spoilers below, each 5 above gives you another spoiler to open.
Barracks:
The Dottari keep a small set of barracks and meeting halls in Castle Kintargo, but the bulk of their armories, barracks, and the like can be found in the city wall’s numerous bunkerlike towers. It is likely that Thrune will bring some of the best of the fighters from the Dottari's ranks, leaving one of their barracks or armories rather bare. Finding out which is the most open will take time read a Diplomacy check but should be worth the effort if all goes well...
Church:
High priest Corinstian Grivenner works hand in hand with Barzillai Thrune to aid in keeping the “peace” in the city. To that end several members of his church regularly go out and attempt o round up or beat down other religious orders to keep the heat off some of the more despicable things Thrune does. Shutting down one of the bases for these wandering bands of Asmodeans will likely focus more negative attention on Thrune himself.
Citizen's Group:
The Citizen's Group acts as informants for
the government. They are led by Tombus Regegious, a distant
descendant of Kintargo’s first lord-mayor. Their aid has been instrumental in helping Barzillai Thrune settle into his role as lord-mayor and now they actively sniff out and harass anyone they suspect of being a "seditionist".
Elurius stops to think of things she might remember about the city... And the comes up with something. ♫"I remember hearing about this High Priest Corinstian Grivenner who works hand in hand with Thrune. He tries to aid in keeping the “peace” in the city. But several members of his church regularly go out and attempt to round up or beat down other religious orders to keep them from organizing, for example the local Shelyn worshiping painting guild got attacked a few weeks ago. Shutting down one of the bases for these wandering bands of Asmodeans will likely focus more negative attention on Thrune himself."♫

Ooo, lets open all of them then. What is the group preference? I’m happy to target any of them to get us moving again!
Thanks GM! All three would work. The religious base would probably be the hardest to do, assuming a few religious spellcasters, magical protections, and/or summoned devils guarding it. The other two would probably be a bit easier to deal with. If I had my pick? I would go with the Citizen's Group. Getting rid of the group's leadership or making htem look like fools should keep their numbers down and faces out of our way, and help keep the citizens who support us safer in general. But they ARE citizens and we want to avoid hurting real citizens if we can. The Barracks is the safer bet, the Church the hardest, but most effective too. Let's get a vote from everyone and see where everyone else is. Sound off in the Discussion thread with your Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary choices. We will give everyone at least a day to respond and will go with the higest rated choices among the group.

The festivity planned for the afternoon truly seems to have attracted the attention of the people and called for extra guards around the opera house. As far as Elurius can tell there is only a skeleton crew working at this particular garrison, known for some of its cruelist and most proficient guardsmen in the whole city. The one chosen is a small two story structure, bearing extra Thrune regalia on flags and banners hanging out the windows.

Elurius gives a small smile as the spell seems to take ahold of the man. She holds out a small letter, handed to the man ♫"Can you be a dear and read this aloud to everyone at the event today?"♫
The letter:
Dearest Brazalli Thrune,
Thank you for throwing what I am sure is a thrilling event. Sadly, I have to inform you that we could not attend. We appreciate the peaceful attempt at bringing our group's activities to a conclusion. Sadly, we are not people to be openly trusting and have hundreds of things to be doing to accomplish our goals.
Additionally you should know, we are not going to settle for a few peace talks and lifting of some restrictions, too much has happened, from the Night of Ashes to all your commandments. This cannot continue, even if you abdicate control, this could readily happen again. Kintargo needs to be freed of your control, and until it has it's own ability to forge it's path we will continue our activities.
Please enjoy the rest of your time in our lovely city. It has sadly seen better days, as it seems to be in a chaotic tyrannical mess right now, the famous operas shut down, soldiers from out of the city harassing the citizens in it, religious fanatics using their power to beat down other groups, and citizen groups roaming the streets and harming anyone they find 'seditionistic' even if there's no evidence. We are ashamed you have to see it like this, and hope to clear these issues up, but sadly I think such a day and you being here would be mutually exclusive.
Anyways please enjoy your leisurely indulgences. We'll be staying busy rebuilding the city.
With the best of wishes for our lovely city,
The Silver Ringer
P.S. Please don't hurt the guard. He doesn't know exactly what he is doing, and you'd be killing a loyal man to you.
Don't you mean the Silver Ravens? Anyhoo...that letter works for me. Unless anyone has any other objections or questions, everybody prepare to hit the barracks. I will set u0p a special spell list just for the event. We will go with my plan and people can join in however they want to do so. What time of day is the 'event' happening?

As soon as the man is out of her hair, Elurius slips into a different alley way tugging at her sleeves and whistling at small tune turning into a tall, burly half-orc and sauntering back to the Longroads coffee house.
♫"May have found a good place to be striking..."♫
I was thinking of having Elurius give her self a code name something like the silver songstress buuuut that might be a bit too obvious. In retrospect just putting the Silver Ravens might have been a better course of action.
Everyone makes their way to the targeted barracks, people streaming around them towards the opera house. You hear excited whispers about the Silver Ravens all along the way. "I wonder who they are and what they look like. They've already done so much, like taking out that killer! The mayor has to acknowledge them, to do otherwise would make everyone mad."
Everyone arrives just as the Chelish national anthem begins playing in the distance. Lirotha activates her hex and takes flight, starting to look for open windows while Elurius, Rocco, and Oren all set up nearby.

Oren drinks down her mutagen just in case there could be trouble. She takes a spot and looks around.
Lirotha finds a promising window to get the show started on the west face of the building while Valrani and Oren keep a close eye on the surrounding area. Need to see if Elurius or Rocco get higher results.
Rocco and Kurglunn (fully manifested in his ectoplasmic form), stand with Oren, ready to scare off any nosy citizens or guards who return toward the barracks too soon. As soon as Lirotha takes flight, Rocco shrouds himself in invisibility as well and takes to the shadows. He also casts a spell to help him keep watch more effectively.
Cast Invisibility and Heightened Awareness on myself. I'm out of the way, probably in an alley, while Kurglunn is staying with Oren, probably more in the open. Though K has a cloak on to conceal his identity somewhat.

Meliandri here! I'll see if I can get a proper post up before work, but it's probably not likely.
EDIT: Mel is definitely here to keep up on current events, though she's likely to get carried away. She's meant as a support bard, though I'll probably be taking a level in Swashbuckler (inspired blade) at 3 so she can be a better flanking buddy for Veccio in melee.
As far as skills go, she'll have diplomacy and bluff covered fairly well, a decent score in Knowledge (anything) by level 3 or so, and a decent acrobatics score as well. If there's anything else you all think is needed, let me know; I'm flexible.

None of the avatars fit the image I had in my head. Always the case. But, I like this guy's smirk.
Thanks for picking me, GM; can't wait to get started!
EDIT: Just so's ya know, Veccio's also ex-Asmodean. He's also hot-headed and short-tempered. This'll be fun :D

Well Aerodus is very much devout, but he has realized long ago that pushing his religion down people's throats doesn't lead anywhere. They will realize the truth in his words with time anyway ;)
Aerodus has cut ties with the church two years ago and lives a rather simple life in Villegre.
Therefore we might well know each other - but even then, I think you guys finding out where Aerodus gets his power from after some time will work better. Exquisite moral dilemma ("Oh no, I should hate him, but he is such a nice guy!")

I envisioned Aerodus with loose hair at first, but I found this avatar and it just looks classy XD
@ DM: How do you feel about variant channeling rules?
I toyed with the idea of going with Rulership as a theme.
Variant Channeling:
When channeling negative energy to harm, affected creatures take only half the normal damage but take an additional penalty or harmful effect; a successful saving throw negates the additional penalty or effect but does not reduce the damage any further. Creatures that would normally ignore the effect of a particular channel (such as undead with respect to a positive energy channel used to heal) ignore the variant effect of that channel.

Sounds good to me. I dunno if you breezed through my background but her relations with the church aren't the best. She and her brother were essentially slaves, working a lot for little food and meager shelter. She eventually was taught about the way of Ragathiel and left the faith. her brother was killed for it. She took her revenge by killing an initiate at the church.

Maybe we don't actually know each other, but Aerodus did help you out in the past by dissolving a rather tricky situation before violence was used. Maybe you were angry about some very visual display of slavery? Could have well ended up arrested or worse had he not come to your help.
A +11 bonus to Bluff (+12 vs Humans) should be helpful in such a situation ;)
So we are not friends, but you could go "Oh, I know that guy! He helped me deal with slavers once!"

well i had never planned on our characters being friends cause Izzy's real paranoid about anyone who's not her dead brother. It was more if you studied at the same church She "worked" at, she might recognize you and have some added hostility and mistrust that we would eventually overcome through the acts of rebelling. But since you want your Asmodeus worship... not a secret, but not the main topic of discussion, it's fine. You'll just get the usual hostility and mistrust. lol.

should work as well ;)
There is just one big church of Asmodeus in Kintargo, so the propabilty is actually quite high that you have seen him there during his time as an Acolyte.
The worship is not a secret for now. Should it become a necessity because of other rebels being very suspicious of Aerodus, he might well go for the "stealthy priest" angel and mascarade as a worshipper of Abadar.
If anyone else wants to use my "I know that guy!" idea from above, just let me know. I find it rather hillarious :)
Veccio maybe? Hot-headed, check. Getting into trouble, check!

We'll be starting as soon as everyone has reported in gameplay and presented his/her character. For now just tell me if you can check the map out and place your characters on it please.
I confess this is the forst time I use google docs for this as the GM, so I might very well be a bit clumsy at the beginning.

Nah, there's another way. click share, then click get sharable link in the upper right corner. on the drop down menue, change "anyone with link can view" to "anyone with link can edit."

People are basically gathering in front of the Opera House, the place Barzillai requisitioned and turned into his own base of operations and personal lair. As such the crowd is facing the entrance of the Opera and giving the back to the park itself with its small artificial ponds behind you.
If you are looking for an easy way out just in case things get out of hand you could try to make a run on your left or your right following the street that divides the Opera House from the Park. Otherwise you could try to escape through the park itself. Anyway, the best way to eascape in case Barzillai decides to unleash hell on you depends from the place the opposition will come from, and what it's made of...
It was work in progress... I wasn't sure about what map to upload... I don't want to give you too much information before it's right to do so... :P but it should work now.
Also: Abigail, Aerodus and Veccio, please edit your profile with your stat line clearly visible. Do as Isabella and Meliandri have done, either way works perfectly for me.
Place yourselves on the map when you are ready. Possibly at a short distance from each other. Remember you are just a bunch of strangers (and a couple of friends) casually meeting each other in the middle of a protest against a tyrant who supressed freedom in your home town less than a fortnight ago and has the support of the forces of Hell as well as his own regiment of fanatical thugs and hired mercenaries...

Hi! The maps seem to be working fine for me.
Is anyone going to have a problem with Meliandri having an accent? She's not exactly native-born Kintargan, and I do love the fake French accent when typed.

GM, I should be able to do that tonight. I'm actually heading to work now. This is probably a good time to mention that I'm in Australia, at GMT +9:30...
I had a good chuckle at Mel's accent. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. (Check out Aramis, in my aliases, who also has a fun accent.)

Edit: Whoa that's some serious fake accent XD
Haha, if that's directed at me... It was a dumb idea from the character's first appearance in a "high-powered drunk pirates" game. When I ran her in PBP, I just had to roll with it. It's stupid, but fun.
Meliandri is a noble scion of house Aulamaxa who's followed her friends Lucca Avalanti Veccio Mezinas to the protest. She doesn't like Thrune and would like to see him leave the city, but has no concrete plans to get rid of him (she's tagging along).
Isabella has joined the protest against the new opressive regime (she's protesting the government). She's a convert of Ragathiel who recently lost her brother Sean to the church of Asmodeus and killed an initiate in retaliation. Even if she seems to have gotten away with it showing her face at a public rally might not be the wisest of moves, considering how she believes her brother was killed because of her own conversion...
Abigail's story is not that much different than Izzy's: her beloved husband and son were taken from her less than a week ago. She's determined to get them back, although at the moment she doesn't even know where they are imprisononed or even if they are alive still.
When the crowds began to move towards Aria's Park she decided to join their protest (so she's protesting the government too)
Aerodus is an ex priest of Asmodeus (at least in the eyes of the city's clergy... his diabolic patron seems to disagree with them and empowers Aerodus still, although who can say for certain what place a mere mortal holds in the schemes of the prince of darkness? If indeed he's the one sharing his blessings with Aerodus and not some other entity altogether...). As many of the others he's protesting the government as the idiot Thrune clearly (?) defies the will of Asmodeus...
Veccio Mezinas is a young man besotted with Meliandri. He followed her to the protest as her bodyguard, so he's basically tagging along.

Veccio is definitely tagging along. And yeah, I'll put my full statblock in my profile as well. I was at a board game night when you announced the successful applicants, got home at half eleven, and have done everything on my phone since. I'll be back at a real computer tonight, and will do all that tricky formatting then. Thanks for being patient! :)

@ Veccio: That avatar makes me giggle a little, Veccio.
@GM Elan Morin: That seems about right, more or less. She's like your standard politician: All the rhetoric, none of the concrete plans.

@DM: I just realized that deities grant specific subdomains while excluding others. Was under the impression that you could pick any subdomain from the god's domains.
Are you ok with the Innuendo subdomain (Trickery) even though Asmodeus doesn't grant it normaly? It fits soo well!
For the separatist domain I picked Nobility, so that would basically be a houserule on top.
Basic trickery domain or deception subdomain would be ok as an alternative, but I would prefer keeping innuendo for purposes of being a manipulative chessmaster putting thoughts into brains.
Also I expected you would say no to variant channeling - wasn't really important ^^
@ Izzy: Yes, but she thinks they've hanged her brother because she converted to Ragathiel, right? If they went to such extreme measures against her brother... what would they do to when they get her instead? That's of course IF she's got this right and that's what happened. Perhaps her brother was hanged for another reason altogether?
@ Aerodus: Go for the innuendo subdomain. And know that every choice shapes the character's future ;)

I'll be stealing from a lot of actual speeches for my Perform (oratory) checks. That was Mario Savio's "Bodies on the Gears" speech from the 1960s at University of California, one of my favorites. The name seemed like it could fit in a Taldan/Chelaxian region like Andoran, so I kept it as-is.

Yeah I'm really curious how he ends up. Depending on the circumstances and the plot, he might even go LE again, even though I don't think this will happen.
Could well turn into an oracle at some point should he abolish his god and get the attention of Sarenrae & co.
Ex-Clerics are a nice blank slate.

Oh! A little about myself, I guess.
I graduated from college in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in history (focusing on South Asia but with a working knowledge of both US and European history), and am currently employed as a teacher's aid at a local elementary school. When I'm not working or updating games, I read and re-read a lot of fantasy and casually follow United States and world politics.
I've been gaming, on and off, since roughly 2006ish, including DMing a little bit of 3.5, but I didn't get into the play-by-post stuff until about a year ago. I'm currently running a Kingmaker game that Veccio is in, and have characters in 5 other PbPs including this one. I have a weakness for high-dexterity/high-charisma characters, which is odd, since I'm clumsy and a bit shy in real life.

I've been playing RPGs for years as well, jumping into the DM's shoes out of necessity after moving away from my group seven years ago and got stuck in the role ^^.
Was doing some play by post a few years back, but quit after all my games disintegrated for various reasons. Now back on track and it looks better :)
I'm also running two games myself on a different forum for a first time, but they are still in the starting throes.
My main gaming group is going through the Way of the Wicked Adventure Path from Fire Mountain Games currently, a campaign for Asmodeus-worshipping overlords to be.
Therefore I find it very amusing to play Hell's Rebels myself!
