DM Darkblade Giantslayer Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master GM Darkblade

The Giantslayer Adventure Path begins in the fortified town of Trunau in the southern part of the Hold of Belkzen. A series of strange events trouble the beleaguered town. At the town’s request, the PCs must uncover the source behind these events and step in to save the town from forces which seek an end to Trunau and it's peoples.

Tuzak swipes at the archer as it draws down upon him, his claws scratching the hardened leather cuirass covering his side but not penetrating. The arrow sinks into the sloth, it's pain and anger both subsiding as it slips towards unconsciousness.

Dundin puts his wand away as he moves toward any orcs outside the tower.

Dundin can make out that figures are moving in the distance beyond the fires, a pair heading slowly in the direction of the tower and your band of defenders.

Within the tower, orc warrior 6 steps back, up and away from Tuzak, unsure if the sloth is truly dead while drawing another arrow to fend off any rush to reach his master above.

Sorry, it appears my previous post erred on group order, corrected below.

Round 8

Delia rushes into the tower just in time to hear Tuzak's pitiful choking gasps. She glances upward to see the orc archer drawing another arrow from its quiver, she draws one of her own and aims up the tower shaft towards her enemy! Unfortunately her aim is off and the arrow simply streaks up the open tower and bounces off the stone steps. "We need to hurry and deal with this! More orcs are amassing beyond the fires..." She looks to Jace, who appears ready to rush up the stairs to avenge his fallen friend Tuzak. "Down, boy." The warcat takes one more glance up towards the orc archer, letting out a terrible roar before walking back towards Delia.

Convinced that his charge is safe for the moment, Songan rushes back toward the tower, putting away his shortbow and retrieving his longsword as he does; hopefully his absence won't have put his companions in a bad spot!

Move as quickly as he can to get to the others while storing his bow and drawing his sword. If I remember correctly that should mean only one move action this time around, as I think storing a weapon takes a move as well.

Adir moves up closer to Tuzak, healing the wounded sloth and glaring menacingly at the orc archer.

Delia's arrow clips the support timbers for the stairwell and deflects away from the archer, cursing slightly under her breath as she keeps Jace by her side.

Songan rushes into the tower doorway, taking in the scene of the wounded sloth, angry druid, and perturbed hunter all facing a smug, overly confident archer.

Higher overhead, the orcish drummer pokes his head above the open trapdoor to the stairs, checking the situation. He spies Adir upon the stairs, and barks out what might only be construed as some form of orcish lullaby. Sleep The drummer then proceeds to continue his drumming, though he moves back from the opening, his song seeming to loose some of it's vigor and drive.

A soft haze flashes over Adir's mind as he seems to get strangely tired. His weapons become heavy, his armor pulling him to the floor, his thoughts of Tuzak slipping away, sliping away like Tuzak's life. Tuzak's life, his wounds, his life slipping away. Will Save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 Rage wells up within the goliath druid, anger at what has befallen his friend. Screaming out in frustration, Adir jerks awake roughly, staring daggers at the drummer above, his thoughts again back to the matters at hand. Adir mumbles at the drummer, You are going to die.

Groin rushes up the steps after Adir, grabbing his handaxe from where it lodged in a riser. He hastily throws it at the archer, trying to drive it back from Tuzak, Handaxe: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23, the blade striking the bowman in the left thigh for Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6, the strike nearly staggering the orc with it's sudden, painful precision.

Meanwhile, at the barricades defending the gates to Lower Trunau, a lone old man holds the line against yet another rush of orcish attackers. Bodies of men, women, and orcs alike litter the grounds, the lowered portcullis and doors barely standing against the heavy thuds smashing against them from the other side.

A fresh faced and eager militiaman arrives to see the battle, noticing to the north a larger orc dragging a white haired victim into an alley, the victim strangely silent as he implores Brampton for help with his eyes.

For now, Brampton will be marked as the B on the map, O is the old guardsman, and the orcs are numbered. Welcome Brampton, time to show the orcs what you are made of, ehh.

Each square on the map is 10 feet, so adjust movement accordingly.

Gate Barricades:
Two barricades have been set up on the hill leading toward the western gate. The barricades are approximately 3 feet high and 5 feet wide. A barricade has an AC of 5, hardness 5, and a break DC of 20. It costs 2 squares of movement to cross a barricade. A barricade provides cover, but only to creatures within 30 feet of it. An attacker can ignore the cover if he’s closer to the obstacle than his target.

Brampton runs up along the barricade, his rush ending alongside the end nearest to the approaching orcs.

Dundin attempts to rush to the barricade, braking short after he encounters two orcs approaching the tower. Not enough speed/direct line to charge the distance.

Leira finds the stress of the situation weighing upon her mind, distracting her from being able to separate the magical energies flowing around the items. She recalls her mother's wand is a wand of acid splash, with roughly half it's charges remaining. The potion held on Urnsul's belt sheds a faint glamer aura.

If Dundin sees the orcs, he would try to keep the closest one at 15'

As Dundin wishes, he stops short of the orcs 15'

Did Leira move to take the cloak or the wand? With focusing on the items and everything else, she will only be able to pick up one this round.

Tuzak rises up on wobbly legs cautiously, trying to press the attack on the dangerous archer as his master commands him. Tuzak cannot rise from a prone position, move forward, and take Total Defense all in one round. I suggest letting him take Total Defense after rising up for the AC boost but not move ahead.

Seeing Brampton rushing along the barricade with his polearm, the old man likewise charges the orcs, his battle cry For Rodrik and Trunau ringing over the area. He wields a Greatsword: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19, landing a solid blow upon Orc Warrior 3 for Damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14, Staggering the orc with it's intensity as a large chunk of the orc's left shoulder and arm are carved from it's body.

Orc Archer 6 looks down at Tuzak with a sneer, drawing back his bow for a killing shot, Arrow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8, only to have the tough sloth shift his bristling fur aside, the shaft snapping as it strikes the tower wall.

Orc Warrior 1 holds up as he sees Dundin coming around the corner of the building. With the space allotted him by this, he grabs a set of bolas of his belt and quickly spin-tosses them at the Dwarf, Bolas: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 successfully striking him around the leg for Nonlethal Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 but the Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 fails as the dwarf is larger than anticipated, the bola only wrapping around the right leg.

Orc Warrior 2 steps up next to his comrade and throws a Javelin: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 at Dundin, the flickering flames and smoke making his accuracy horrible. The javelin flies past Dundin, strikes along the house wall, and is deflected away into the dirt somewhere behind Leira.

Orc Warrior 3, reeling from the blow he received, attempts to strike back at the old man with his Double axe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 but the heavy blade is too much to handle due to the immense pain.

Orc Warrior 4 takes a side step, attempting to flank the old man and keep away from the polearmed younger warrior. He swings a Double axe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 as well, this one landing a solid blow against the middle aged man's unprotected right flank for Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9. The man takes the blow with a grunt of pain, looking past at the younger warrior, Don't take long boy, we must hold the line here.

Orc Warrior 5, realizing someone is rushing to stop his fun, angrily shoves the white haired mute to the ground, then in a vicious swing brings his greataxe down in a savage, powerful blow for Damage: 1d12 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10, the ancient looking elf collapsing from the strike. Cost me me fun, now you be fun the orc growls as he turns to face Brampton, his grisly work bleeding out behind him.

I'm assuming it isn't going to be possible for Songan to get into the tower proper and actually attack this round, right? If I'm correct he'll take a move to get as far as he's able. If he will actually be able to strike, let me know, and I'll roll it.

Songan is in the doorway and can see up the tower along the stairs to the orc archer. He can attempt a bowshot, either from the floor or by mounting the stairs behind Groin, but in either case the archer is aided by the tower arrangement. The tower is narrow and built to be defensible, especially against giants and their ilk. It is just unfortunate that the soldiers who were defending it were forced outside, dying trying to save the villagers being killed in their homes.

Grand Lodge

Songan frowns momentarily when he comes to the others, realizing the impossibility of getting into any kind of melee range with their foes given the number of allies between he and them. Momentarily setting his sword to the side, taking only enough care that it didn't simply clatter to the ground, he again takes up his bow, nocking an arrow to the string and, in the space of a moment, sending a prayer heavenward to Desna. The sense of good fortune he'd had in moments before was passed now, leaving him with only his own skill to try and attempt this difficult shot.

Shortbow Attack w/Melee Penalty: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 7 - 4 = 22

Adir Bloodmoon:
FYI Healing Nonlethal Damage: You heal nonlethal damage at the rate of 1 hit point per hour per character level. When a spell or ability cures hit point damage, it also removes an equal amount of nonlethal damage. That should help Tuzak some.

Songan's arrow flies straight and true, striking the archer just below the ribcade, burying itself in his side. The orc falls back against the tower wall, Staggered, his breathes soon coming in wet, gurgling wheezes, traces of blood beginning to drip from his lips and porcine nose. The bard realizes too late if he had but mounted a few steps, he would have been at an ideal range, but then perhaps Desna would have been more fickle in offering up her support.

Tuzak seems to bolster a bit at the additional healing offered by Adir, on his paws once more and eyeing the wounded archer warily. The beast seems ready to rush forwards and strike, awaiting only the word from his friend, his companion, his master.

Dundin steps up and smashes the javelin thrower with a strike that leaves the orc Staggered on death's door. The other orc snarls in anger, tinged with a slight bit of fear. Dundin would have acted in the Second Group, but no foul this go round.

Delia, pressed by the continuous call of more attackers, focuses her frustration into a deft arrow strike, nearly splitting Songan's arrow with her own. The second arrow is enough to cause the orcish archer to stumble forward, losing his balance upon the stairs and falling over the side, dropping nearly forty feet or so to thump heavily into the flagstone covered floor. A few of the stones crack under the impact, as do many of the creature's finer bones. A pool of blood starting creeping out from beneath the body.

As she and Jace turn to leave the others and the tower, the warcat gives a small roar to Tuzak, letting the sloth know to be more careful and keep an eye on their pridemates.

Above the tower the drumbeat stops. There is a moment of low guttural chanting, and then silence once more. A small splash of smelly, rancid grease washes over the open hatch above, dripping onto the last few steps, coating everything in an oily mess and laying thick and gooey around the roof entrance.

Orc Warrior 2 likewise attempts to stab Dundin with his Falchion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17, scoring a jab even as it collapses to the ground, it's wounds sapping the last of it's life from it. The orc dies with a grin as it's blade does Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 = 8 by a gouging puncture to the large dwarf's thigh.

Orc Warrior 3 stumbles closer to the older warrior and swings it's Double Axe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6, Confirmation: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16, but loses it's grip as it grimaces in pain, the heavy double bladed weapon tumbling free to the ground.

Orc Warrior 4, angered and in shock from it's wounding, swings a heavy two handed chop with it's Double Axe: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17, catching the old soldier in the upper arm for Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9, age and poor habits of recent leaving the man winded, bleeding, and ill prepared to carry the fight much longer alone.

Orc Warrior 5, seeing his foe stopping to grow larger, laughs out loud, kicking the dying elven druid laying at his feet, who wheezes weakly. He be fraid, no fight Bronk like manling. Bronk

Brampton realizes nearly too late the orc's victim is in fact Silvermane, the ancient elf who tends Trunau's water supply via the Hopespring. His death will sorely hurt the town, both for it's basic needs but as well the morale of it's people.

The orc smacks his great axe against his chest, signaling his readiness to battle the young soldier. Total Defense

I assume the D on the map is the Orc Drummer? Is the only enemy left on the tower?

That you are aware of, yes. Tuzak is the only team member to see the roof of the tower, but unfortunately none of you currently speak sloth to know for sure.

Songan will try and get past the others and onto the roof of the building. If others that act on this initiative want to try and get up first, he is happy to allow them to go first. Otherwise, he braves the grease, confident that his reflexes will allow him to maintain his footing.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

I'm assuming it isn't possible for him to get up there and get a shot off at the same time. If he can get a shot off, though...

Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Shortbow Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

For the Tower folks:
I moved Adir, Groin, and Songan to follow Tuzak. Adir's large size on these narrow stairs blocks any attempt to squeeze past him and the hazardous/difficult movement on the stairs would prevent anyone from reaching the roof in one turn of movement, even should Tuzak successfully pass the Grease spell, unless risking an Acrobatics check and possibly falling from the stairs, potentially taking another hero with you.

For Delia:
You and Jace cannot see past Dundin and the orc he faces from your current position due to the burning trees and smoke distorting your perceptions. Closer this may change, but for now you can hear activity at the barricade, just not see it to provide archery support. A run would have gotten you closer, and given you more options for the next round.

Leira:
If I may ask, why are you so intent upon looting the bodies?

From the rooftop, strange guttural casting can be faintly heard, a short chant of some kind. Tuzak is struck by some form of ultrasonic attack, the sloth shaking his head, his paws rising up as if to cover his ears. Fortitude Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 The move protected the great beast somewhat, though a small line of blood can be seen oozing from his ears, having taken Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1 from the sounds.

Well, you warned us we should get from the corpses during the combat and do not assume we just get the items around if we do not state clearly we are doing so.

Plus, Leira knows equipment is the base for his non-caster companions to succeed once the challenges escalate (how well equipment is counted inside the CR system and WBL for the little fun it is to deal with), and due to her interest in magic items she took the responsibility of the team to order all the equipment found and hold the party well equipped.

Leira unfastens Vorom's belt, pass her arm through the half-orc's back, and carefully pulls from it retrieving the object with the 3 potions.

He then points his bloody weapon at Bronk and screams, RUN LITTLE ORCLING!

Leira:
I understand, I suppose my confusion was the way you went about it. From my notes, you now have Urnsul's warhammer and cloak, your mother's wand, and Vorom's belt with three potions attached. You are prone next to Vorom's body. With the full round action to retrieve the belt I assume you have released concentration on the Detect Magic, is this correct?

Dundin, angry at the stream of orcs flooding across Trunau, steps up and swings a hard, forceful blow at the clumsy orc before him. The arc nearly takes the warrior's head, leaving only a narrow stretch of muscle, bone, and throat remaining, pumping blood out upon the orc and earth beneath him, Staggering him as his eyes seem to lose focus.

Brampton spins his polearm through a few strong and deft positions, the long point puncturing the life out of both orcs accosting his fellow militiaman. The younger warrior is distracted but a moment when he realizes the man is Omast Frum , a sergeant who was very close to the fallen captain Rodrik Grath. Brampton had heard rumors the man had fallen into the bottle again, but the soldier before him looked well squared away and determined, if somewhat wounded from his battles today.

Turning back to Bronk, the orc seems slightly impressed with the militiaman's skills, but not enough to break and run from the fight. He holds his ground, staying close to his dying prisoner, ready to strike should Brampton rush him.

Round 10
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Son of a....
I thought charging the tower would be this heroic moment.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Acrobatics: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

Tuzak had enough momentum left sliding across the grease that he was able to push up and strike at the orc drummer. The mighty sloth swipes out with a Paw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, more to harry the orc and force it to consider it's stand, alone atop the tower and facing an approaching cadre of town defenders.

Boy, good thing I moved Adir up this round, negating his delayed action so as to get everyone closer to the top. Otherwise he would have likely fallen 60' to the ground below. Adir was blocking movement up the tower stairs, still aways down from the top. While not strictly allowed per RAW, I usually allow a save to catch oneself, just before the fall. Reflex Save DC 20: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13, yikes. That would have hurt.

Omast nods his thanks to Brampton, then turns his eyes towards the last orc and his dying victim. He stabs his heavy sword point down into the dirt and unslings a heavy crossbow from his back. Be wary, watch his right leg, shifts before he swings.

Orc Warrior 1, acting more on instinct than thought, swings it's heavy Falchion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 at Dundin, the blade connecting for Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 2) + 4 = 8 even as the action tears more skin free of it's half-cloven neck, the sight grotesque and abhorrent, the head now lopsidedly hanging across the orc's shoulder, still frothing and attempting to mumble some orcish obscenities it's dying mind cannot recall.

Orc Warrior 5 steps a few feet away from Silvermane, getting itself a little room to move, watching the larger Brampton carefully. Fight good, Grenseldek pay good, fight for queen. The orc again takes Total Defense.

So...the way to the top of the tower is cleared now? Songan could get up there and get an attack off? Do you want me to re-roll the acrobatics and attack from before?
