But until then: how/when do you want to introduce us into the game?
As the party cautiously climbs the rickety stairs, a curious scraping sound of wood being dragged across wood is heard above them. This is followed by some muted curses, the palpable THUD of something heavy hitting the floor and the crack of splintering wood...
Our heroes race down to the safety of the landing just as a massive iron-reinforced oak barrel comes tumbling and crashing down the stairwell, obliterating the entire stairway all the way down to the basement... where the barrel explodes, spilling its content onto the floor.
Our heroes look down and see, in the shattered remnants of the barrel, a massive pool of red wine, three dozen drunk but rabid rats, and a couple naked figures sprawled in the wreckage. These victims (the new guys) are covered in wine and rat bites, drunk on the wine fumes, and wailing incoherently about chariots fulls of eels.
Round 2 - the Players are up.

As for money, why don't both the new PCs come in with the wealth of a 6th level PC instead of a 7th, so 16,000 gp, with no single item worth more than 4,000 gp please.
Oh well. No new toys for us, I guess.
Hej Ro, I see you still have ink. Could I borrow some to write a letter home? I'll pay you back tomorrow, just need some time to go begging on the street after we are done here.
:D
(In all seriousness, all good, we are a large party and as such have action economy on our side. On a normal roll distribution, we should do about as well as a 4-person party with proper WBL so it's actually quite in balance.)
(That said, Lia would really like to write a letter from the big city later - so she'll come to Ro for some writing supplies after those stairs are dealt with. :D )

Lia Tani |

Could you...could you bring some ink? And paper?
Or maybe some matchsticks I could sell?
For the record, this is just fooling around/Teasing(the GM, not you :D ). As said, IC Lia was completely disinterested in acquiring "loot" and was not very responsible with that she got. I'm really good, luckily Arcanist is not heavily gear-dependent :D

oh wait. Not me. Sorry.
Ignore that. :P
Just my not so subtle way to say I have contributed a lot of dead bodies while playing this AP. lol

Minor question for the GM - how many Hero Points do the newbs start with?

So I added that to my character in HeroLab and it changed my race from 'Human' to 'Demi-God - Ready for the Starstone Test'.
I'm thinking Izzy is good to go. :P

The Starstone Test? Dude, you're in Varisia, thousands of miles from Absalom. That's going to be a looong swim.

GM BrOp |

Lurk lurk lurk. Gonna be a hero, yup.
Sorry, Newbies, I'll work you in as soon as I can, but the Oldies are kinda in the middle of something.

I got me a Swim +6 ... I can make it! :D
No hurry on dropping me into the story. I'm always in favor of the GM finding the right time and embarrassing place.
Chasing the Wight wearing the princess' panties, Karmid kicks open the door of the out-house to find... some idiot mid-deuce-drop reading a copy of "Archer's Weekly" and looking both alarmed and confused.

Karmid hold the door open for only a second, wrinkles his nose and states absolutely: "I found the wight that stole your panties: Not the greatest time for a 'little archer's' break BTW. You can play with your 'stick' later..."

Well played, sir, well played! :D

Technically my ready action for when one of us IS falling.
Do we have to jump or risk being crushed?
If we are 'crushed', will the stair be destroyed as well?
As in, is our fall inevitable? Or would it allow us to avoid some damage?
Just trying to get a feel for the situation before I react.

I'll allow you to target the bell so that it doesn't crush you and Drasven if you like. If it does hit you (a very likely event), it will take out the stairs around you as well, which means you'll fall unless you make a Reflex save.

Lia Tani |

Ah, that's mighty kind of you. It doesn't exactly fit the trigger wording, but it does perfectly fit the intent behind it.
Thanks for going with that, rather than a legalistic reading :)

GM BrOp |

I will almost always go with a reading of the rules that favors creativity and fun (for everyone). A legalistic reading by definition ("adhering excessively to law or formula") supposes an adversarial relationship between GM and players (like in a courtroom); that's not how I see RPGs unless they're specifically designed that way.

GM BrOp |

In other words...
"Its more fun this way!"
=)
Yup! Years from now, what are you more likely to remember: I made a conservative call and told Lia that since she has specified that she was going to cast Web on anything falling, she could not cast it on the bell, or what just happened? I'm not saying this to give myself a pat on the back, I'd just rather be in the latter game than the former.

Lia Tani |

Oh, by all means.
Since she was ready to cast this specific spell if needed, it totally makes sense.
But my wording was "if an ally falls" and I know many GM's who would see that as being focused on the PC's, and being caught off-guard by the bronze bell.
Which would then lead me to more rules-lawyering-proof formulation of "cast web if such could help an ally avoid damage", which in the end helps no one.
So, yeah, give yourself that pat on the back. It was not a stretch, it fitted great with intent and flow, and it was fun. I'm good, here.

Drasven Hammers |

I if had a certain pair or slippers on.
Drasven would Shoulder charge the bell away from everyone.

Karmid Groundbreaker |

That’s a new one on me too. I will post my actions tonight.

GM BrOp |

"Thirty-nine electricity damage. Better not get on Lia's bad side."
I also don't know what that error message entails.
Seriously, ouch!
Thanks for the response. I haven't gotten the error message again since I switched to the VPN, but was getting it almost every other day before that.

Drasven Hammers |

I keep getting "request rate exceeded" message when I try to post to Paizo.com, so if anyone knows what that's about, please let me know! Apologies in the meantime for the delay.
It means somehow your data request is being sent more then once and the server recipient in this case, Pazio is unable to keep up or accommodate until he clears the previous requests.
For example.
Like I Ping you.
You respond.
I ping ping ping ping ping ping ping you.
And you respond wait the F up. Let me finish respond to your 1st ping. There's only a few thousand pings I got to respond to first.

Thanks so much for explaining this, Drasven. Any idea what might be causing this?

Lia Tani |

I accidentally posted in discussion first. I would have liked that Damage roll better :D
Brzzzt: 9d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 5, 5, 2, 6, 6, 5) = 41

Drasven Hammers |

It's mostly between ISP and serve in this case pazio.
Nothing on your end unless you're double clicking on link or the 'submit button'
Clearing cache might help but it's not a guarantee.

Drasven Hammers |

Well Drasven was originally a warpriest with a crossbow and trust me.
He wasn't hitting anything either back then.
In fact. Drasven has one of the worst hit rate in the party be it ranged or melee.
Getting hit though. He maybe one of the best lol.

Lia Tani |

Well, he went up the stairs to inform his Mistress of our impending arrival.
So I'd like to suggest we camp the ramp and have lunch.
No really. At least Tea.
Let her waste any pre-battle buffs she'd like to do and then wonder why we won't rush in blindly.
Then, when her buffs wear off, we can still rush in blindly but with better chances.

Lia Tani |

Oh, are you suggesting what I think you are suggesting?
I like it.
We rush in blindly with bolstered numbers!

GM BrOp |

Sorry, Karina and Issengrim, you have been very patient, but I don't think I want to include you in the upcoming combat. As soon as its over, however, you are in like Flynn!

Karmid Groundbreaker |

If we wait, then she might get away by magic or just blow up the tower somehow. Or climb down some rope she had hidden up here. I understand what you say, but can we afford to wait? We've come a long way...and if we can catch this woman now, and stop her now, the better.
What is everyone's opinion? Go now or wait?

Rojava Brishen |

Sorry for being slow to post, I've also been training new staff this week so very busy.
Since we can only make assumptions about casting, spells, CL, etc., I think we should go ahead and go for it without delay.

Lia Tani |

I'm fine with either. Just saying we are at the top of a tower with rickety stairs down.
If she HAS means of fleeing it's likely by either flight, or featherfall, or having climb speed, etc. So no matter what we do or when we come, she could simply exit stage right and leave the scene.
The second thought was that if she KNOWS we are coming, she may even "ready" for the moment one of us appears. If we drop out of initiative, wait even a minute or two, she could not reliably maintain the ready action and would need new init(plus any "round/level" buffs would run their course, or at least be near their end).
That said, I also understand your desire for urgency. I just see different priorities and would say wait for 2 minutes/12 rounds, then go in.

Drasven Hammers |

Running jump, grapple her and hope your combined weight pulls her down?
I can see it as urgent and much as I'd like to wait and see, IC wise don't let her get away!

Karina Rotarescu |

What if I super-duper ultra-mega pinky swear promise not to smite? /s
I'm just eager :)
---
If you all have been chasing a foe for a while, I would just encourage you to get to her. If the enemy is intelligent, she might just be able to tell that you're trying to wait out her magic and then come fight you anyway. There's nothing saying that you have any more advantage over her in your current location versus the next floor up. You might as well just face her.

GM BrOp |

Drasven: Seems okay with either
Lia: Wait
Ro: Go ahead
Karmid: Leans toward going now
So we have 1 wait, 2 go, and 1 could go either way. Do I have that right?

Rojava Brishen |

I can wait a couple of minutes if Lia really wants to. I'm just skeptical it will make a difference.
