Remaining silent, keeping her eyes on the strange fire, Lylindra only nods to Timmon. She is clearly uncomfortable, but does her best to make no sound.

Not sure why the pace is so slow on this game but is there a way that we can pick it up a little bit? Not sure if it is because there is not a lot of response from players or not a lot of pushing the story from DM Caleth or a combo.
I just don't want another game to die. I like the premise for this one and I am enjoying the party.

Byarsh detects magic and scans the fire, though he does not expect to find anything extra. I'm not sure why it slowed down, but I have plenty of stuff prepared for you to do.

Byarsh's staff emerges from the fire smoking slightly but with no lasting damage except for a slight scorch mark. You don't think that the flames are capable of doing lethal damage any more.

Looking at Byarsh's staff, then to the fire, then back to the staff, Lylindra sighs - the first sound she's made since entering. She examines the flames and the area around them. If she finds no signs of active traps, she'll back up and jump the low flames.

Cartwheeling over, going into a backflip she clears the flames themselves and lands making barely any sound, though she winces, so it was clearly not as silent as she'd hoped.

Seeing Lylindra's bold jump Tama takes a deep breath, covers his face and pushes through the flames to her side. He casts detect magic and scans the room, looking for threats mundane or magical.

Tama leaps over the waning flame with an impressive margin to spare and lands in the chamber on the other side. Tama, pushing his way through, is subject to the last bit of power that the flames can muster as he pushes his way through. 1 non-lethal damage

The room on the other side of the flames is small and dominated by alcoves. Unlike the rooms you have passed through there is no decoration on the walls, only white plaster which is coming off the stone in chunks. The alcoves in the far wall are empty except for the scattering of objects which caught your eye earlier. The other two alcoves, out of sight of the door each contain life sized statues of animal-headed humans, a snake on the right and some sort of snouted, long eared creature on the left. Both statues hold weathered-looking wooden staves Knowledge(Nature) for anyone who enters the room will tell you something here.

Detect Magic:
There is a faint aura on what appears to be an amulet among the scattered objects (universal). The staff held by the snake headed statue also has a faint aura (evocation). You can also see what appears to be another faint aura through the wall in G14 (necromancy).

Seeing the flames attempt one last hurrah before flickering to even lower heights, Byarsh will hop over the threshold to investigate the room's interior with both mundane and magical sight.

The aura behind the wall is abjuration, not necromancy.

Byarsh:
All of the auras seem to be just remnants of enchantments which have decayed over time.

The amulet was once an amulet version of an orange ioun stone (+1 CL) but now you think that it only would work intermittently. (Gives +1 CL for 5 rounds/day)

The magic in the staff likewise has decayed to a mere glimmer of flame in the center of the crook at one end. Whatever enchantment it once had is now only the equivalent of the Lesser Illumination and Least Energy Assault weapon crystals (from Magic Item Compendium; gives 20' illumination and +1 fire damage when used as a quarterstaff). It and the non-magical staff held by the other statue remain masterwork apart from this too.

You can tell the aura behind the wall is some sort of protective item, probably related to energy but without actually getting access to the item you can't tell what it is exactly.

Timmon seeing that everyone else seems to be heading over the flames will join them, both he and Batu following Byarsh in.

Do they? Or do I have your permission to make stuff up?


Samaerew:
You can make some stuff up. I picked the cobra because the word Djet which I thought I had made up actually means cobra in Ancient Egyptian so I think that it will be a recurring motif. I picked the jackal because it lives in the desert.

The only idea that I was kicking around is that the animal headed people are a way that the spirits of the desert are represented in art. I know that I want the spirits to be called Setekh collectively though. Feel free to come up with some completely different explanation for the statues if you have a cooler idea.

Lylindra:
You do not specifically recognize either animal. They are certainly desert dwelling and unknown in the south.

The statues look solid except for the staffs that each hold, which can be removed and still look exceptionally finely made despite their age.

Samaerew glares at the grave robbers shouts at them in Sharrim.

The plaster comes away easily enough, revealing an alcove in the wall framed by grayed and weathered wood. In the alcove sits a gold and blue lacquered headdress which looks like it has seen actual use, perhaps in battle.

Those who took items:
You feel the presence which you felt as you entered the tomb, however it is not angry, you cannot quite place the emotion you feel from it.

The age-warped seer pauses in lifting up the statues' treasures, appearing to hesitate momentarily.

DM Caleth:
Byarsh is not keen on leaving behind such treasures, particularly since he knows so little of this region. The guide's transparent display of showmanship in opening the tomb's door makes Byarsh even more dubious of Samaerew's assertions of divine retribution. For now, Byarsh is buying a bit of time until he can get a better glance at whatever is behind the plaster.

While he is not strictly capable of communing with spirits in a rules-based sense, Byarsh does have at least some ritual training (such as his hero point trait). I'm interested in trying one of several things:

1) Perform a quick ritual reading of the signs - mostly for show - by using Profession (Soothsayer) to convince the others of the reading's authenticity. If the soothsaying kicks up legitimate signs, well, we'll roll with it.

2) If it is possible to scrape together the materials (or find them behind the plaster - quite the sign from above!), Byarsh is open to performing his trait-granted ritual to impart Samaerew with a hero point. This blessing would be granted through Byarsh, who would give some credit to the ancestors who requested he act as their mouthpiece *wink*. It might open up some interesting role-play between Byarsh and Samaerew down the line.

3) If all else fails, Byarsh will try to keep a careful eye out regarding the tomb's layout and any special mechanisms for opening doors. Given a decent opportunity, he will either sneak back for the magical goods or send Drøm to at least snatch the amulet.

Byarsh:
You can see the helm now and you can identify it as an Endure Elements effect. (It acts as endure elements, negating the heat hazards of the desert.)

I think that both 1) and 2) are brilliant ideas. Go ahead with both, I don't know what materials would be specifically but you could definatley at least light a sliver of wood to provide some smoke and maybe a feather from your familiar would help as well. With your perception check I am going to say that you can find adequate materials for a ritual, whatever you can describe, like some smoke for air, some dust for earth, some condensation from the walls for water, etc.

Make your Profession check and if it does not get any actual omens I might ask for some sort of opposed check to give them the chance to call you on it, but you very well might get an actual omen. But I think that both are great ideas to go ahead with, maybe even as part of the same ritual.

DM Caleth:

I think when we were still in the trait design phase, there was some talk of a material component for the hero point ritual, but I'm not sure if that was ever finalized. By the sound of it, those components are present within this area or waived for the first rendition of the ritual.

As an aside, it would be interesting to require the material components only when the ritual is performed outside of an area symbolic of a character's strength. Lylindra may be able to undergo the ritual without cost so long as it is performed in an area of considerable cold or near Southern megafauna. In the case of Samaerew, his blessing is focused for being granted in the presence of his ancestors.

We'll see what the soothsaying kicks up. Maybe there will be some speaking in Sharrim as he channels the ancestors.

Swaying slightly, as if suddenly intoxicated, Byarsh steadies himself with a hand against one of the frescoes before sinking to his knees. Lifting his head as if with considerable effort, he holds out his impromptu staff and utters "Houd die gedachte, Timmon. Het lijkt de voorouders hebben verwaardigd om direct te spreken. Holding the handful of wooden slivers the hunter carves off of the impromptu staff the group scavenged from the caravan, Byarsh struggles to his feet and motions for everyone to clear some space. Standing with his back to the door, his eyes towards the headdress, and his feet in clear view of the statues, he slashes two half-moon lines in the dusty ground - made all the dustier by powdered plaster so recently cleared from the southern wall.

"Samaerew." The reddish-skinned man holds out his other hand to the headdress before motioning to a place at his side.

With that, Byarsh takes one twig from his hand, whispers a quick prayer in Auran, and tosses the other slivers between the half-moons. They fall in a jumble, their middles tangled and their ends pointing in divers directions. As the soothsayer speaks, the ice raven alights on the ground, hops into position, and begins gently fanning the slivers with its wings.

Letting the moment's gravity settle in, Byarsh thrusts his remaining sliver of wood at the statue bearing the Solar Staff. As the two pieces meet, the staff flares and ignites the wooden sliver, which immediately ignites. Fearless in his role as interpreter, Byarsh allows small flame to lick up the matchstick until its orange warmth kisses his hand.

Byarsh tosses the much-diminished cinder onto the pile of sticks, at which point fire begins to trickle along the various wooden pathways. Where slivers intersect, the flames sometimes diverge to consume more fuel or simply choose a single path. As if awaiting some sign, Byarsh watches with feverish focus.

DM Caleth:

Byarsh:
You feel that under the watchful gaze of the statues looming out of the shadows you are getting a genuine response from the Setekh, the desert spirits, who have been without a genuine voice in the mortal world for far too long.

The path of the fire traces out an undulating line, which might represent the earth, and then flares out into a looming, almost draconic figure over it before going out in a furious flash of one last burning rage before mercifully extinguishing, as if glad that this message has been passed on.

You got high enough that you can get some interpretation help, but I'm not sure if you want to RP the interpretation for yourself. Just tell me how much of a hint you want.

PS-I am going to frame your last post as the example of how to RP a skill check, nicely done.

She speaks for the first time, abandoning the comfort she feels from silence to be a part of whatever this is. There is a meekness about her voice that seems unlike her, but it's gone with her next words.

The Hero Point was waiting to see if there was a legitimate response from the spiritual entities here. It would be a little confusing to grant a Point if the spirits were angry about our being here.

By the sound of things, the world is threatened by the dragons. Either their continued domination of the lands will result in destruction, or their clash with some force - perhaps these new gods - will bring about mutual devastation.

In playing this out, it would be good to know if my interpretation is roughly on target; I can help to steer the collective interpretation from there.

Nodding solemnly, Byarsh holds his breath for several heartbeats before exhaling. "Weet iemand de naam Setekh? Het is hij - of zij - die mij gezonden heeft een visioen."

As Byarsh begins his ritual, Samaerew's fury gradually turns to curiosity, and then respect for the man's clear connections to the spirits. He nods approvingly when Timmon translates the bit about spirits as flames, and his respect grows at the symbolism of the fires wicking their way up the splinters. At the last question, he responds enthusiastically in Sharrim.

Sense Motive 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 on Byarsh. Is his contact with the spirits real or a deception?

Also, has Tama continued digging at the plaster or has he stopped to observe this soothsaying?


Byarsh:
You were right about the vision being about the continued rule of the dragons. The Setekh clearly know that you are fleeing the dragons and you get the feeling that you have their tacit approval, or at least they will not oppose you in any way.

Also, I noticed on your character sheet that you do actually speak Sharrim. I might ask you for a bluff check at some point to continue to pretend you don't since Samaerew is becoming a little suspicious.

Samaerew:
You think that Byarsh genuinely has gotten a message from the spirits, whose watcful gaze you are literally sitting under right now.

Tama uncovered the headdress but took no actions other than trying to memorize the action and dialogue while watching the exchanges between Byarsh and Samaerew.

Tama twitches his fingers countung sylables and rhyming couplets beneath his breath. He appears to be trying to recast the events into an epic poem format on the fly.

Oh wow, that shows how well I've gotten used to Camthi/Dutch. After Estil was the odd man out for languages with Eresh, I had fallen into the habit of assuming Timmon was the only one who could speak with the linguistically-limited warrior; as you can see, his list of languages is otherwise rather...esoteric. It never registered with me that Byarsh had Sharrim on his language list, and I don't believe it's ever entered into his actions. Terribly sorry!

I suppose communing with the Setekh is one way to trigger knowledge of a language I had otherwise forgotten that I have.

Possible Sense Motive Result upon Confirmation by DM Caleth:
If anything, Byarsh is overwhelmed by his exposure to the supernatural. What you probably noticed before as an ability to pick up on the occasional word of Sharrim has changed for the more fluent. Byarsh's skill with the language seems to include a strange accent and the rare, archaic turn of phrase.

Byarsh does not seem to be 100% certain about the meaning of his contact with the Setekh, but he is sincere in his interpretation.

It is my belief that your ancestors seek a champion: you, Samaerew.

"I am still working to divine your patrons' will, but their blessing and mine are yours (ritual trigger). They have not objected to any of our actions thus far, and it seems to me that they are open to our use of the tools of ages past."

In communing with the local spirits and expending some of his own energy, Byarsh grants Samaerew 1 Hero Point - a combination of the mystic's belief in what Samaerew can accomplish and the lingering, waning energy locked within the tomb. Byarsh's campaign ability is now expended until otherwise noted.

Byarsh once again regains his footing, and he addresses those who helped him escape the slave caravan.

I do not believe this will involve possession for any of you, and I will work to keep them at bay should matters get out of hand.

"The spirits' power dwindles, and I do not think they are strong enough to make additional contact without time to rest - time we may not have."

"The dragons have had thousands of years to build an empire. We will need time to undermine them."

Byarsh respectfully waves a hand at the grave goods. As he speaks, he handles the amulet he placed around his neck only minutes ago, staring at it as if wondering what other secrets it might hold.

"If these spirits desire mortal protegees, there may yet be others that desire the same thing. We should honor the spirits' blessings with our thanks but accept that time waits for no one. We must continue."

Forgetting in his excitement that Byarsh speaks languages other than Sharrim, Samaerew turns to Timmon.

Byarsh regards Lylindra with patience, and he summarizes for her. As he speaks, he motions to the staves and the headdress. Having siad his part, he nods to Timmon as if to acknowledge he may add whatever he wishes to satisfy Samaerew's request.

So long as you think a grave good will help in this pursuit, you may accept it as a gift from the honored dead here. Limit the wealth you accept; try to take only tools. Our guide and these spirits will not look kindly upon trading away the treasures we find here.

"The newcomer is pleased because I was able to act as a mouthpiece for his ancestors, and they have granted me awareness of their language. Those who came before requested I grant my blessing, and I anointed the newcomer in the name of his forefathers. To these, at least, he is now a champion of his people. To those outside, his claim may not be accepted warmly.

"As earlier, that staff holds a sliver of the sun's own energy, and it can both illuminate one's surroundings and set fire to those it touches. The other staff is not magical, though it is remarkable for its preservation and craftsmanship. The headdress protects its wearer from the sun and heat. Take what you will, but understand there may yet be more within these crypts."

Alright, Byarsh has had his time in the role-playing spotlight; take what equipment you can justify. Let's find some more rooms, treasure, and perhaps a few skulls to bash.

Samaerew reverently takes the headdress from Byarsh. He straps it to the back of his head, around his helmet. I'm not sure exactly what this headdress entails, but I'm assuming it goes on the front or back of the head and would not interfere with the helmet I described in my initial description post.

If no one else takes the Solar Staff, Byarsh will. Given its wonderful properties, it might behave better for someone with more melee potential (Timmon or Tama).

Timmon can have it. I'd prefer a bow, and am willing to pass on magic gear until we find something bard or bow specific.
