Wow. I'm not sure I can compete with that character. I'm not that good. My characters personality tends to come out more during play. I'll try to add a couple things to his alias.

Also a little thing on the campaign submissions, Illufaus is a full high elf. Not half.

For some reason I had him down as Half-Elf. I have corrected that issue.

DM Asmodeus: What is your stance on merging a couple of the background paths?

I finally got my 5E book in and have spent the evening off and on going through it. I still have the image of a priest of Ilmater in my head, but now the story I see has a merging of the Soldier and Hermit background.

Concept:

Human, Chondathan decent (Thinking mid Dalelands or Corymr)
Hermit background (primary)

Life of Seclusion

"They say there is nothing greater than to march into battle surrounded by those who are willing to die for the same cause, but they would be wrong. I have heard the screams of the wounded, shouting out for their parents, spouse, or god to save them from their wounds. I have seen the battlefields turn to mud with the spilling of blood and there is nothing glorious about it.

Had Ilmater not seen to spare my soul on a battlefield such as this, I too would have joined the ranks of those used as pawns on the chessboards of the mighty. I harbor the Crown no ill will, but never again will I say that any battle is beautiful. Necessary sometimes, but never a thing to brag of."

Discovery: A calling to serve the faithful of the Weeping God.

Characteristics (taken from the Soldier branch here):

"Do you know what it is like to awake in the middle of the night shouting at the top of your lungs in blinding panic? To feel your heart thudding inside your chest so hard that you are certain it must burst through your ribs at any moment? To pray that the moisture you feel is sweat and not that you have soiled yourself when the night terrors come? No? Consider yourself blessed then my child, as there are those of us who fear the night's embrace as we do not know what it will hold for us when we close our eyes to rest."

Ideal (Also taken from Soldier branch):

"Ilmater has placed a calling in my heart and I must heed it. For too long have I kept myself in the monastery hiding behind my fear and my doubts. If I am to be of assistance to those who in need, I must be among them. I must allow my faith to be the armor I wear and Ilmater's blessings to be the weapons that helps those in need. To do any less would be to turn my back on the tenets of the Church and against what I know to be meet and right."

Bond (Hermit)

"I am not perfect, nor shall I ever be. Ilmater teaches us that only those who have been truly broken in the name of the Faith have reached perfection. I struggle to determine if the nightmarish scenes that come to me in my sleep are signs that Ilmater cares deeply for me, or is it simply that I am already one step closer to the Abyss? Only through Ilmater's grace and experience will I be able to find out.

Flaw (Hermit)

"Even now, far removed from the man I once was, there are times when the anger and darkness come to me. It whispers that perhaps a touch of cold steel would do more to stop the man beating his child then a lecture of what awaits him in the afterlife. I hate myself for my weakness, but this flesh is weak. I have not raised my hands in anger since the morning I awoke in the care of the priests, but the knowledge is there, like a thorn buried just below the skin."

Trinket: 1d100 ⇒ 86 An empty silver snuffbox bearing an inscription on the surface that says the word "dreams". This item was in his pack when he was nursed back to health with the healers, but he has no recollection of where it came from or who it belonged to previously.

Edit: I won't be offended if this falls into the too cookie cutter concept, as a tormented soul is not exactly new material, but I do think having the god of Endurance through Suffering, might find some people who could relate to that once they parted the Mists.

@Digger

Very well written, enjoyed it very much.

The Exchange

Would you be opposed to me withdrawing my current submission and submitting a different one in its place?

Very good. You can always create a custom background and what you have written is fine. As far as mechanics go you can choose the following:

2 skills of your choice for proficiency.
2 languages or tools or 1 of each.

Since you are using the hermit as the primary background then use its equipment list:
A scroll case stuffed full of notes from your studies or prayers, a winter blanket, a set of common clothes, an herbalism kit, and 5 gp

* You can switch the herbalism kit if you do not choose it as a tool for the tool that you are proficient with.

I have no problem with it. i will remove your old submission from the list.

Thanks. I will wrap up the full scope background, as well as the interview tonight and the crunchy bits tonight.

Seeing how smooth the gameflow could be in 5E, I may have to consider converting my Tabletop game to it soon.

I made the jump to 5E with my weekly tabletop group two months ago, and it has been awesome.

Here is (most of) my application. I haven't finalized the crunch -- Ability Scores & Equipment -- but all the build and framework are there, essentially the same as I posted last Saturday.

Also here is the interview and, on her Profile, her family background and character history.

Perdita Imogen is a young Paladin of Lathander with the kind of faith in beauty and honor that Ravenloft so well loves to taint with horror. But Perdita is also the daughter of a cynical, dark-humored father and a wicked Dryad who captured him as a sex slave. Perdita is very educated and is more scholar than warrior. And from her Fey mother comes a streak of mischief, deceit and manipulation.

Interview:
Thank you for meeting with me, Maximillion, and considering me as a member of your group.

I am Perdita Imogen, a Paladin of the Morninglord, Lathander -- though you can see I am very young.

I just left home, Silverymoon; I was given the assignment of helping to guard Master Titus's caravan from there to here. Neverwinter is beautiful, a true gem like my Silverymoon.

But I guess you want to know about me. Well, as you can see I am not human; I guess you could call me a Half Elf -- my father was. But my mother was a wicked Fey in the Moonwood. I know, you name it the Glimmerwood. He was her captive for many years there; I was born in the Moonwood.

I grew up in a church in Silverymoon. I was a young prodigy, studying all manner of scholarship -- that was my training; I was to be a sage.

Yet now I am a Paladin of Lathander. My father wanted me to stay in the church; he always tried to scare me with tales about darkness and hopelessness. But cloistered life is not for me.
I want to travel and see all the beauty the world has to offer.
I want to defend the innocent and give charity to the pitiful.
I want to learn all the histories and cultures of the people of Faerun and share the light of Lathander.

I know I am not strong, not yet a great warrior. But I am developing. I am educated and clever. I talk with people easily and can manipulate and obfuscate when called for. (My father tells me I get that from my mother.)

Anyway, I long to see Waterdeep, just like a few days ago I longed to see Neverwinter. I can be an asset to your team, Master Maximillion! I am a ready scholar and diplomat and am improving my skill with the glaive. I believe in hope and protection, justice and honor, beauty and peace -- and I believe the world is a good place but still needs Paladins to fight for good.

Build:

Half Elf
(Darkvision; Advantage to Charm Saves, Immune to Sleep; Persuasion & Deception are my Racial skills; Common, Elven & Sylvan are my racial languages.)
Paladin of Lathander
(LG Alignment; Divine Sense, WIS & CHA Saves; Religion & Insight are my Class skills.)
Sage
(Arcane & History are my Background skills; Infernal & Celestial are my Background languages; Researcher is my Feature; my "Flaws" are #s 1,2,3, & 4! (And they're NOT Flaws!); my Ideal is sorta like 1, 2 & 5: "A life of study points to true beauty & understanding, and through that comes self-actualization, truth and the betterment of life.")
....I feel the "Bond" will come once she's entered Ravenloft and her faith in Beauty and Truth crumbles to horror.

As for play style, I'm big on teamwork and group cohesion. I like to roleplay conversations with NPCs and come up with creative ideas to challenges. I LOVE setting & plot background and NPC personalities and histories. I like using my Skills and am only average at combat. I love old school Ravenloft.

Thanks for taking a look at my PC.

Looking good, can't wait to see a final version of her.

Interview:

"Good evening to you Master Maximillion. Please do not stop enjoying your meal on my behalf, as this is not a time of fasting in the Church and even should it be, I would feel the guilt the most if my presence caused you to cease the enjoyment of a simple pleasure such as food."

*pausing to allow the merchant to resume his meal*

"I would also like to say thank you for allowing me to come so late in the day. While I have been given leave by my brethren to come and go as I see fit, there are many old habits that die hard and for me to pass my duties to a junior brother does not come easily. Today was the last day of my instructions for him and I promise that when the sun rises tomorrow I will be ready to go, should you feel that my services would be of use to you."

*nodding his head as Maximillion speaks*

"While Waukeen is indeed the Merchant's friend and I have no doubt that already having two of the Goldeneyes at your disposal will be more than you require, but I do feel it is only fair to point out that unlike those of the Waukeenian faith, the temple of Ilmater will not be requesting a donation for my presence, nor for the usage of my gifts from Ilmater. I would require only the chance to share a meal, perhaps two if there is enough to share with all, with those you have hired and in return I will administer to their needs to the best of my ability. If something should be above my capacity, then they would be able to speak to the Goldeneyes and I will not hinder them in any way. It is merely divine providence that has my leaving the temple in conjunction with your trip and it would be improper of me to seek to profit from a mutually beneficial arrangement."

"I know you have many others to consider, the logistics of the trip compared to the mouths to feed. In many ways, the planning you are doing now is the same as any Quartermaster in the military ranks, except you must also act as the commanding officer and all duties therein."

*shaking his head slightly at Maximillion's question*

"Not anymore sir. While I can still tell you the names of all those in the company I served with almost a decade ago, it feels like a lifetime since I have wore the Purple of the Cormyrian army. I can assure you that I still remember how to set a fire to minimize the smoke, dig a proper latrine pit and never lost the taste of Calimshan coffee so thick it could hold your spoon up for you if you needed to scratch an itch."

*bowing his head as he was dismissed*

"Thank you again for your time and should your sums support the additional mouth to feed, please send word to the temple. If not, then may Ilmater still bless your journey and may all your days of toil be rewarded ten fold upon you."

I am heading home now and will work on all the crunch pieces when I get there, but I wanted to add this to the process while the idea was still fresh in my mind.

I got a little bit more for Illufaus. I'm not entirely sure how to put it down on (metaphorical) paper, but I've got him as someone who loves and cares easily, but also, on account of the fact that he spent one hundred years without any experience in taking care, or even giving affection, to anyone, he has a lot of trouble.

Also, people have trouble liking him, because of the fact that he looks slightly mummified, and also fells slightly dead.

And I also changed his alignment from CN to NG. I feel like playing a good guy for once. Posting as him to let you look at his sheet easier.

I really like some of these characters. I like Perdita's backstory, and the idea of a character who was meant to be sage, but ended up becoming a holy warrior.

Thanks.

I don't know how much of a warrior she is, yet -- she'll have to be taught basic tactics (such as creating advantage) and such. She's still much more a Sage than Warrior.

But she's trying.
.

....I admit, I haven't had the time to look at the other applications or the DM's advice for entries, but I'm hoping to have some free time for that this Sunday after Arsenal whoops up on Man Utd.

I am working on his alias page and think I have the crunch in there correct so far. If someone who has made 5E chars before, this is my first one, could check it over I would appreciate it.

I will get cracking on his background now to tie in the Archetype vignettes with his history.

Looks good. I'm assuming you took +1 to all stats for your racial scores.

I believe your AC should be 18. (16 from chain, +2 from shield).

yep you are correct Belac, I think he added in his dex modifier which he doesn't get with heavy armor.

Nice to see more applications thicken the pot!

Finished a Bard Build with the current character background. Willing to play whatever build the party would need if selected. Tossed it in a spoiler button on the character sheet.

GM, I was interested in playing a Priest of Kelemvor (I remember reading the Time of Troubles series as a kid) but instead of making a Cleric to represent my character I was going to use the Sorceror class.

Is Favored Soul an option for sorcerors? Would the Death Domain be thematically appropriate for a "Priest" of Kelemenvor? (it's listed in the PHB but the spell list seems less Kelemvor and more Cyric/Myrkul)

If Favored Soul isn't available I would just make a standard Sorceror (or Wizard) and have him be a worshiper of Kelemvor and a lay priest.

Wow...that is is type of submission pacing I was anticipating...nice job, all.

1. Favored Soul is not mentioned in the PHB, Now I do believe they were done in Unearthed Arcana at one point if I remember correctly. However UA stuff has not been playtested or balanced for long term play and thus is not an option in this recruitment.

2. The Death Domain, While not thematically appropriate for Kelemvor directly, that is what he is assigned as a domain for his clerics in 5e. 5e streamlined a bunch of stuff and they grouped the three dead gods all into the death domain. However sorcerer's won't get a domain unless you multi-class a level of cleric in.

I managed to get Part 1 of his history up. I will work on part 2 later today.

Nilan Milarne wrote:

If you cannot use the favored soul option, a wizard might be good.

Something about all the death themed options, is that you gain necromancy abilities, which aren't really Kelemvor's thing. You could make it work though.

If you are willing to drop spellcasting, I would recommend monk, taking monk of the long death (SCAG) at 3. It gives death themed abilities, but not undead themed. Its more about actual death than undeath.

I actually settled on just playing a Sorceror (Gold Dragon) with the Acolyte background.

Monk however seems interesting and perhaps I would multiclass...

Anyways, here is the completed alias with background, personality and appearance.

I'll come back later and make an in character post about the interview.

Less than 48 hours to go for the recruitment period.... Lets get those characters finished up and I will announce the players on Tuesday.

Good luck to all of you!

*snaps salute*

Will do!

Edit 1: Finished part two of his history. It is a little rushed, but I can polish it later to smooth the rougher edges. I think it still conveys the gist of it.

Good luck.
I added a bit to his personality, flaws, and ideals. If I get in, the rest will be added as I get a bit more of a feel for his personality. I'm much better at describing if its in the context of a story.
Edit: Love the backstory Darius.

Stop with the Sir crap. What are your actions then boy? the fat man replies, his feet coming off the desk.

Yes S. Yes. Well, I've traveled nearly six cycles of the moon and faced no less than twelve bands of skeletal abominations. I had two associates but they have now found themselves in drink and no longer wish to assist me. I would li... Nilan says

This aint what you like or don't like boy. This here is a job, you do what you're told. We ain't here for assisting you in nothing.

Yes. Ok. Well. I will do as required Sir. I have some skill with matters arcane.

A witch are ya? Well, maybe we've got a need for a scrawny witchling, maybe we dont. Show up tomorrow, an hour before Sunrise and we'll see. Now, get out. I was napping.

Yes Si..Yes. Tomorrow, before dawn

Get out.

Nilan turns and heads out of the room.

Timezone is CST. I do most of my postings between 5a-3p each day. I can usually do multiple posts in that timeframe.

Going to have to withdraw my interest, haven't had the time to properly create my character.

Okay, I think that Perdita Imogen's character sheet is formatted a bit more "plugged in." At the very least, the Skills are grouped together and bonuses added; plus I put down Initiative and Move.

Perdita Imogen's profile should be all up to snuff.

Just to give everyone a heads up.

Some of you know that we are in the process of moving into our new house this month and we will be travelling there this afternoon and will be staying there overnight so that the cable people can come tomorrow and get everything hooked up. During this time I will have no internet access other than my cellphone, so the final selection announcement will probably come late Tuesday Evening/Early Wednesday morning.

Ok let me get my flash drive plugged in and bring up the applications and I will make an announcement shortly.

Uruk can tend to distrust others given his history. That said Uruk believes that those who need help should get it if he can give it. He has no love of "laws" or civilization seeing them purely as a thing to tolerate and having witnessed how strong organizations of people can create oppression. A stranger in the world above (in many ways even more so than normal half-orcs) Uruk bristles sometimes at the lack of tolerance about his race or about his presumed lack of intellect. As such he is happy to use his natural and presupposed intimidating aura to remove obstacles that annoy him. At his core, however, Uruk ultimately longs for something akin to a romantic nature of "something more". That something more could be love, friendship or camaraderie, Uruk isn't sure but he knows that if he can esape bondage the way he did there must be a chance for some version of happiness.
Uruk is observant, reserved and secretly optimistic

The first selection for the game being played by PirateDevon is:

Uruk K'al-xad the Half-Orc Far Traveler Wizard

You may now join us in the discussion thread to prepare for the game to start.

Hack is a behemoth of a man, standing 6 and 1/2 feet tall with long, unkept brown hair and eyes. Muscles bulge across his torso, and the axes that he carries are prevalent for all to see. He is scarred on his arms, torso and even his face. These are remnants from the many battles that he has fought in his young existence. He carries himself with the air of someone who is older than his age.

The second selection for the game being played by Filios is:

Shenkt "Hack" Corchran the Male Human Outlander Ranger

You may now join us in the discussion thread to prepare for the game to start.

Illufaus is about 4 inches over 5 feet tall. He is not as skinny as most elves, with a more thickset frame, almost none of which is muscle. His strait hair is a very pale grey, and his eyes are a frosty blue. His skin is very pale, almost to the point of looking ghostly.

He has a small birthmark in the shape of a lumpy circle on the back of his hand, and a slightly tilted nose from fighting as a child. His fingers are long and nimble, with longer nails than most nobility. They are slightly cracked and yellow, as part of a side affect from making a deal with his father.

The third selection for the game being played by Belac93 is:

Illufaus dying-star the Male Elf Noble Warlock

You may now join us in the discussion thread to prepare for the game to start.

Nilan is a slight and slender man, he walks with a cane because of his frail body. Reflavored the walking stick into a quarterstaff for crunch's sake. He has short black hair and pale skin. Nilan shaves infrequently, giving him a rough appearance. He wears grey unadorned clothing and his only adornment is a wooden handmade symbol of Kelemvor's faith, a Skeletal Hand clutching a set of balanced scales.

The fourth selection for the game being played by nilesr is:

Nilan Milarne the Male Human Acolyte Sorcerer

You may now join us in the discussion thread to prepare for the game to start.

Darius' clothing has seen better days, as has the man who wears them. The fading vest and tunic’s edges are beginning to fray, and patchwork stitches are worked along the shoulders and sides. The rough cut of his beard shows his lack of skill as a barber and a simple strip of leather keeps his brown hair pulled back in the style of a common laborer.

Darius is lean, almost to the point of emaciation, but his emerald eyes are sharp like those of a bird of prey and a small knotted cord, the symbol to Ilmater, rests in his vest pocket.

Darius' frame is lean, but fit, as he discovered early in life a passion for exercise to keep himself healthy and as a means to be alone with his thoughts. He knows he is not the strongest of men, but he is always quick to add a new exercise into his morning routine if he feels it is an improvement to what he is doing currently.
