I'm assuming that Karas's turn will be taken up in movement but he won't be able to get close enough to the demon to attack it this turn, unless he makes a ranged attack.
As Karas approached and Tauni readied an attack, the demon's red eyes darted from face to face. When it saw Avelina's fair countenance, it seemed to tremble slightly, as if controlling a deeply felt rage. It stepped away from Franti, but otherwise took no other action, standing without weapons or armor, apparently lost in contemplation or concentration.

Avelina visibly scoffed at the rat demon's telepathic threat.
"Was that supposed to impress me? The Holy Radiance you just witnessed was merely the overture to an Opera of Divine Justice."
In accordance with her musical metaphor, Avelina cleared her throat and unleashed a high-pitched scream at the rat demon.

Karas Argentus |

sorry! Life got a tad busy. My planned action was a move action, rage, and use my scale to align the claws to good.

Clebsch GM |

I moved Karas 30 feet closer. Activating the scale is a standard action.
I forgot to list the non-lethal damage Ellena and Karas sustained in the chase. It now is listed in the melee summary.
As Karas prepared for battle as he ran toward the demon, Avelina taunted the demon and opened her mouth as if to sing. None of the other PCs heard a thing, as usual, but the demon flinched and his dirty garments swirled as if hit with a gust of wind. Thereafter it continued to stand and stare.

Karas: 21 (5 non-lethal)(surprised)
Tauni: 17 (casts spell, 5 foot step)
Demon: 17 (falls, stands)

Franti (Protection from Evil)
Anarya
Ellena (4 non-lethal)
The other two benefits of the spell do not apply here. This demon is not summoned, so it won't prevent bodily contact by the demon. If this demon summons another demon, the spell would prevent the summoned demon from attacking Franti, so long as Franti doesn't attack the summoned demon.

Ellena Lovain |

Ellena double moved, trying to get within reach of the demon. "I'm coming for you, demon. Leave the others be!"
Would you please move me, DM?

Anarya didn't like the look of that ice - the last thing she needed was to slip and fall during a battle with a fiend. Standing her ground, she drew forth the wand of spiritual weapon and called forth a spectral longsword to smite the fiend where it stood.

double move to close to melee range. Avoiding the ice and grease.

Clebsch GM |

Karas can reach the demon with a double move, and if he moves at him from three squares to the north, he has a straight line for the last 10 feet of movement, which under my modified charge rules grants him the option of making a charge attack.
Once Franti has acted, I'll narrate the outcomes and determine the demon's turn.

Karas Argentus |

I had actually forgotten the modified charge rule. Attack below.
Claw Attack, Power Attack, Charge: 1d20 + 9 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 9 - 2 + 2 = 27

In order for Franti to get flanking and sneak attack damage, he'll have to delay until after Karas' turn. I'll assume he did that. Franti would then provide cover for the demon from Tauni's attack, but she can avoid that by taking a move action and moving to a point east of the demon. I'll assume she would do that also.
Franti judged his options and saw that Karas was on the charge. He waited to rush at the demon until Karas was attacking it from the north. He gingerly stepped across the magically greased ground to flank the demon and the two made nearly simultaneous attacks.
Anarya pointed a wand at the demon, said an arcane word to activate the wand and a longsword materialized near the demon and began swinging at it. It did not hit immediately, but it hovered between Anarya and the demon, preparing for another attack.
Karas let his momentum add to the force of his claw attack and the sharp talons drove into the demon's flesh. He expected Terendelev's scale to counteract the defenses of the demon, but he still found some of the impact of the attack blunted, as if his hand were driving through a foot of water before hitting. 5 points damage.
Likewise, Franti's sap made what should have been a solid hit at the fiend's kidneys (assuming demons had such organs), but the blow was softened somewhat by its strange magical origins on the plane of chaos. Still it caused it some pain and suffering. 12 points non-lethal.
Finally, Tauni maneuvered to where her whip could get a clear shot at the demon's ankles and she swept his feet out from under him and he crashed to the ground. For all that, he did little but attempt to dodge the attacks. Finally, it shook its head as if to clear it and it looked up, enraged that it had allowed itself to become surrounded and knocked down.
The demon gets no action since it was dazed. It is prone, which grants melee attacks a +4 to hit but makes ranged attacks -4 to hit. It comes out of the daze at the start of Avelina's turn.

From the looks of the map, it looks like I can't get to the demon and attack in only 20' of movement. If I am reading that correctly, if the DM would be so kind as to double move move to get in melee, that'd be awesome.
Ellena again hurried forward, trying to get to that dastardly demon. The puddle of ice really knocked her off her game, trying to get a clean swipe at the enemy.

Karas Argentus |

By modified charge rules you could charge

Clebsch GM |

If the position Ellena is showing on the map (20 feet north of the frozen puddle) represents her first move action, she can just go 15' SE (2 diagonal squares). For her to make a charge attack at the end, she has to move ten feet toward the square she attacks. The demon is SW of the square she ends up in, that's not in the direction she moved, SE. But she can attack next turn if there is anything left to attack.
Karas will probably kill it, since he can do his rage full attack against a prone opponent. Even with 5 DR/Cold Iron, he should be able to kill it. If Anarya wants to have her spiritual weapon make another attack, she can (it bypasses DR). I'll roll for it if she hasn't by tonight. If Avelina and/or Tauni want to pile on, feel free.

Clebsch GM |

Rereading the RAW charge rules, I'll allow a charge attack from Ellena. The RAW only require you move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. Her current square satisfies that condition.
To keep things moving, I'll make attacks for anyone who threatens the demon or can move to a square that threatens if your PC has not done so by later tonight.

Clebsch GM |

Sensing that this fight was all over except the thrashing, Avelina drew her longsword as she made her way around the ice and grease patches. She then waited to see how the others fared in dispatching the demon, ready to cast a spell if it seemed necessary. Anarya likewise prepared for that possibility with a command spell.
Ellena charged around the ice and swept her glowing longsword along the ground as she approached the demon on the ground. The cold iron weapon sliced the demon from stomach to throat, causing black blood to flow from the wound. 15 damage. Note the attack benefited from an additional +2 for the charge attack and +4 for attacking a prone opponent.
The demon ceased moving immediately and was an easy target for finishing blows from Karas and the rest.
The demon did not immediately vanish, suggesting it was one of the demons admitted to the material plane through the rift rather than a summoning spell.
The demon had a small sack with some useful items to the demon: a blacksmith's hammer (well worn, no resale value), a scroll with two spells on it, and 2 potions.

Once this opponent was dealt with, the group continued toward the manor house of Terendelev and the residence of Karas. The way wound between another couple of places where the ground had caved in and then through another channel of destruction created by one of the rampaging Ulkreths. This also created a breach in the wall surrounding the Ring district. Once past this point, it was a short walk to the manor.
I must prepare a map and set finalize my preparations. I'll post what the group sees on approaching the house soon.

Anarya would be happy to take the scroll. Both of those spells are ones she'd be able to cast. One question, GM - consecrate requires that an area be sprinkled with holy water before it's cast - does that same requirement apply when using the scroll? Usually material components are included in a scroll's cost and aren't needed at casting, but due to the unusual nature of this spell, I wanted to clarify.
Anarya will activate her corruption resistance spell-like ability (duration: four hours) on the way to Terendelev's manor.
Anarya looked around at her allies. "Is anyone hurt?" She knelt to examine the fallen possessed man, checking for signs of life. I assume he's dead, but we might as well check. Maybe there's something on him to identify who he was.

Ellena Lovain |

Ellena wiped the demon's ichor from Radiance's blade. "That's another demon that'll never threaten anyone again!".
She turned to Karas, wanting to be sure he was prepared for whatever they found in the dragon's home. "It might be painful for you in there. Are you sure you're ready?"

Karas Argentus |

Karas shook off his Rage as he finished the demon. Bruised but not the worst for wear, he stood near Anarya as she studied the inquisitor.
Karas nodded to Ellena. "Painful or not. This is my home. I want to make sure that it's cleared and that I can maybe save some belongings... And memories."

The man was not dead. He had apparently feinted. His name was Reingeld and through sobs of regret, he told of being possessed by this demon some weeks before the event. He was not aware of it exactly, but now he realized that the demon influenced him in ways that he thought were from a holy source to do things he now knew were anything holy.
As he was giving his confession, some soldiers from the Inn arrived. they had heard the sound of the temple glass shattering and were sent to investigate. They escort Reingeld back to the Defender's Heart to be looked after.
I'll try to post the intro to the manor by tonight.

Clebsch GM |

Terendelev's Manor was on the east side of a broad boulevard that ran north-south near the northern side of the Ring district. It was surrounded by a 6 foot tall stone wall with spikes pointing up at 1 foot intervals. Karas knew that Terendelev never cared for the wall, which had been built by the previous owner of the manor, but rather than tear it down, she merely had the sturdy gate removed. She had always welcomed visitors and refused the service offered by the leaders of the crusade to keep a guard on watch of the house.
The group approached from the north. The house appeared intact and undamaged, as well as unoccupied, at least so far as could be seen from a distance.
I need to make a few perception rolls for the group, so for now, indicate any spells or effects that are in place as you approach and anything else you want to share about what you are doing as you reach the point indicated on the map.

Ellena Lovain |

Other than making sure her sword and shield were at the ready, Ellena doesn't take any special precautions.

Clebsch GM |

Edit: the stone wall mentioned above is only 4 feet tall, so it is possible to see over the wall. If making a ranged attack over it, count it as a low wall no more than half your height, except Franti, who can't see over the wall. "A low obstacle (such as a wall no higher than half your height) provides cover, but only to creatures within 30 feet (6 squares) of it. The attacker can ignore the cover if he's closer to the obstacle than his target."

Anarya's halo acted to protect her as her eyes fell on the great beast and its human companion. With neither word nor gesture from the young healer, an invisible barrier coalesced in front of her. Using shield spell-like ability from campaign trait (+3 AC, duration 4 minutes). "Who is the rider?" she murmurs in a low voice. "Could the dragon have known Terendelev?"

When Franti heard Tauni whisper that she could see a dragon and perhaps a dragon rider by the manor, he couldn't see it in his diminished size form but he trusted her and so he began to creep forward as quietly as he could, which was normally very quiet indeed.

Avelina moved forward right next to Karas and Ellena. She was about to call on Iomedae to give her divine aid in surviving the fight she could see was about to begin (false life), when she noticed the enemy casting a spell and taking an unusually long time. Fearing he was summoning a creature, she decided to try to use a new spell she had just felt the inspiration of Iomedae to cast. She felt a keen need for the light of goodness and justice to illuminate the two by the door and a moment later, a brilliant flash of light erupted around the door of the manor, casting dark shadows in all directions for a moment. "Iomedae has revealed your vile presence and punished your impudence. Begone before her justice is reigned down on you!" she yelled.
The dragon let out a throaty grunt and writhed in pain for a moment and thereafter looked around confused, apparently blinded. The man seemed to have closed his eyes in time to avoid being blinded, but the distraction caused him to lose the spell he was casting.

Anarya moved forward toward the others, and imbued Karas with the same blessing she had bestowed upon Franti earlier. Casting protection from evil on Karas.

As I usually do when there are invisible characters or characters in darkness, I have made a copy of the current map where I will be keeping track of the invisible characters. I have added an origin point for referring to positions using the usual coordinate system to specify a point on the map. At present, for example, before he moves, Franti is in position (-1,-2), just north of Karas. The man by the dragon is at position (12,4) after he moves.
I'm going to move Franti for his action in turn 2. I will post his position under a spoiler. If anyone acquires the ability to see invisible, he/she can look at the spoiler. When Franti is able to return to posting, he can indicate his position under a spoiler using the coordinate system.
The group, lead by Karas, advanced on the manor, taking some initial caution in order to keep an eye on the activities of the man and dragon occupying the entrance of the manor. But after Avelina cast her spell, the opportunity for diplomacy evaporated and Elena set off at a run, nearing the gate to the property. Tauni turned Franti invisible and he set off to do what he usually did in battle, devastatingly painful and debilitating hits with his saps. As Tauni adjusted Franti's appearance with magic, Anarya provided Karas with extra protections against evil creatures, which according to Ellena included the dragon.
Anarya: Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Karas: Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Tauni: Spellcraft: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
The man by the dragon said some arcane words and touched the dragon and then drew his longsword defiantly, saying "As Dahak said, Iskateli khraniteli proigravshiye plakal'shchits."
Edit: Added a few minutes after original post: The dragon, although blind, raised its wings and extended them and gave out a ferocious roar of warning, leaving little puffs of flame and smoke. This is an attempt to demoralize the first opponent who sees him within 30 feet, which is Ellena.
Success by 13, so Ellena is shaken for 3 rounds, ending on the dragon's turn in round 5.
The sight unnerves Ellena. She has never fought such a fearsome beast.
A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Shaken is a less severe state of fear than frightened or panicked.

Karas Argentus |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Karas' features changed in an instant and surged forward. He shouted, "Dahak et erui vos de manu mea! Haec mea sedes et auferam caput tuum a tuo!"
What happened next he couldn't explain but the words left his mouth on their own forming an icy sheen in a shield around him.
Rage, Move 30ft, Cast Shield

Ellena Lovain |

Ellena moved to the spot just to the bottom left of the human, and tried to slice her blade straight through him.
Shaken attack 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 - 2 = 21
Damage 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
If shaken doesn't apply to me as per the discussion thread, please add two to my attack roll.

Ret-con: Ellena was unaffected by the dragon's display. However, Franti had the same view as Ellena. Her aura of bolstered his will, but he was still affected. I'm going off RAW a bit here just because it feels appropriate.

Franti the Fool |

Party Loot Sheet updated following demon fight resolution.
Less-than-full-speed movement Invisible, Shaken Stealth: 1d20 + 16 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 16 + 10 - 2 = 33 ,think this is formatted right
Franti's grin curved to a grimace as the dragon roared. A dragon, a real dragon. Smaller than the bards' tales, but terrifying still to the little Kobold. As he snuck close, he held his breath, trembling with both saps in hands, trying to follow after the paladin.
Franti stopped, collected himself, and prepared his swing to the skull of the dragonrider.
Readied action to attack Piotr as he does any movement/action.
Invisible (+2 ATT, ignore dex bonuses) Shaken Attack: 1d20 + 11 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 11 + 2 - 2 = 26 for Sneak Attack: 1d4 + 5 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 + (3, 4) + 2 = 15, nonlethal
Applying Disoriented condition with sneak attack, see below spoiler

I'll summarize the results of these actions once Avelina has posted.

Avelina clapped at her spell's success, barely keeping herself from grinning. She cleared her throat and reminded herself of how she must act with a certain regal restraint, even when facing an honest-to-Goddess DRAGON and rider. She moved forward with graceful steps.
She pulled back her hand, her other holding a phantom bow in a pose her fellow Champions of Righteousness knew all-too-well by now.
"Now that your beast has been blinded and wounded by Her Light, prepare yourself to face Her Holy Arrows!"
She looses two arrows missiles at the man moving to fight Ellena.
