Franti opened his eyes, once more restored to consciousness by Anarya. He looked around, spying Horgus protecting him, less eagles then he remembered, and a giant Ellena. The fool got to his little goblin feet, leaving his two saps on the ground, and staggered past his allies. As he passed Anarya, he mouthed a "thank you." His wounds seared, and he kept one hand on his chest, as the other hastily tried to remove a potion from his bandolier. He left the room.

Franti's hands trembled when he gripped the vial of his healing potion and he struggled to keep himself from panicking. When facing the earlier mongrelman, when he wasn't struck with blades or had his mind twisted by magic, he was having fun, a genuine thrill. But this wasn't like the other encounters. Franti's heart raced. This battlefield was suited for fighters, not fools. He announced himself to Aravashnial as he hid behind the barricade, crouching as to be unseen. "I-it is Franti, don't be alarmed."

Hosilla dashes back into the room north of the large hall, giving Ellena an opening, but she failed to hit the retreating inquisitor. As she moved, she drew a wand and directed it to discharge. Another glaive materialized and floated forward to attack Ellena. It sliced into her hip, but only a little (2 points). Still the loss of still more blood began to tell on Ellena.

Karas took five menacing steps at Wenduag and they were again face to face. The duel did not last long. Karas added a mortal wound to those of the eagles and his earlier attacks and finally the mongrel ranger could fight no more. Only Hosilla's spiritual weapon remained in the room, hovering threateningly in front of the door to the room where the inquisitor was now hiding.

She saw the leader of the enemies was cornered, her minions laid to waste at the feet of The Righteous. Good was about to triump over Evil, and it was a dramatic battle for the troubadours to sing of! All was right in Avelina's world.

Knowing her healing light would only revive the fallen enemies around the room, Anarya hefted her mace and rushed forward, hoping to end this fight by taking out the last remaining opponent. She tried to duck under Hosilla's glaive, but left herself wide open in her haste. "You will hurt no one else, demon-slave!" she said, with as much defiance as she could muster.

Hosilla grunted as the magical sound converged on her, but she kept attention focused on the entrance, ready to strike at anyone who passed through the door to attack her. A trickle of blood dripped from her nose. She licked her lips and smeared the blood around her lips and laughed. The laugh was interrupted by a cough and a little more blood seeped out of her mouth.

Then Anarya rushed at her through the door. The move surprised Hosilla and she swung her glaive too late to hit the oracle. Once in the room Anarya guided her mace at the seriously injured cultist. She felt her mace receive some magical resistance causing a brief flare of darkness but her light was stronger and the mace passed on through and gave Hosilla's head a jaw-shattering blow. Hosilla's eyes rolled back and she fell over backwards, landing in a dull thump, her glaive falling from her hand.

The battle for the Lair of the Vile and Vicious was at an end.

Anarya was the first to see what was in this room. It was the only room that had it's own light sources, lamps on the east and west ends of the room, with a copper brazier on a stone pedestal adding light and heat to the room. Against the western wall, an enormous pile of animal furs and thick quilts served as a bed. Sheathed weapons and stone carvings adorned the walls. The eastern half of the room held a wooden desk, beneath which stood a long, thin iron lockbox.

Hosilla herself was still barely alive but unconscious and bleeding. She wore a chain shirt underneath her robes. She had a potion in a loop on her belt, a wand that she dropped as she swung her glaive at Anarya, and a large bag with lumpy clumps inside. She had a large pouch on her belt which appeared to contain a number of items, including a book. Around her neck was an unholy symbol of Baphomet.

Wenduag was also still alive, but bleeding out. She had a potion on her, as well as a wand. She wore a masterwork chain shirt, an obsidian unholy symbol of Baphomet, and a pouch with some coins in it. Near the table was her masterwork longbow where she had dropped it. Her other weapon was an ordinary machete. Her quiver still had 10 arrows in it.

The spiritual weapon continued to attack its last target, Ellena for two more rounds, but it did not hit her and vanished. The eagle summoned by Aravashnial vanished about the same time as Hosilla's fall.

As the weapon attacking her dissipated, Elena felt her endorphins melt away as well. She hurt. She took a deep breath and slumped against the wall, while the others examined the bodies and possessions of the dead. "The Inheritor meted out justice this day," she coughed, while glancing at the symbols of Baphomet on some of the fallen.

"Neattholm should be safe now. We got the traitors. The Lady was with us. Great job," Ellena smiles at Avelina as she caught her breath after the scrum.


"I should hope they are indeed safe now. But let us make sure that these mongrelmen were indeed the last holdouts here. We need to make sure there are no more traps around, or creatures like that lizard and snake we dealt with."

Franti drank the potion down to the last drop.

He breathed deeply, trying to regain his calm. He removed the arrow from his leg, and grimaced as he inspected his blood-stained outfit. He kept the arrow in his hand. The fool reverted back to his humanoid form. Aravashnial's earlier magic still coursed through him, and it battled Franti's desire to panic. He rose over the barricade, rejoined the now finished fight, and picked his saps off the floor, putting them in his bandolier.

Franti rubbed a finger on the bloodied arrowhead that was in him moments prior. He approached Wenduag, speaking aloud to his party. "What does Iomedae say about interrogation?" He looked for his water, but recalled it was with his backpack above. The fool stared at the bleeding mongrelman.

The fool thinks of what he'll need. My mask for sure... Ellena has a flask of Oil... That should scare them good... He looks to Tauni and nods, his painted smile conflicting with his frown. His stomach turned into knots. "Well, it is good I'm not a faithful. I'll need my bag, make sure they live." The fool leaves the room, heading back to the barricades, past them, and stands beneath the hole they descended from. He looks up, take a bit of a running start, bends his knees, and jumps.

Franti's second leap allowed him to get his hands around the hole's entrance, and pull himself back up. The fool crept back into room he slept in, grabbing the bag on the foot of the floor. He descended back into the hole, bag in hand.

Franti, Anevia dropped a rope down, so you should just be able to climb that.

Anarya's first action after felling the cultist leader was to channel her magic through the fallen woman, preventing any further blood loss. She tried to kill us... but she is no more threat to anyone now, she thought. She did the same for the mongrel archer Wenduag, and any mongrels who still clung to life. Her work done, she finally felt she could relax. "They may yet find redemption and cooperate if offered forgiveness," Anarya added, joining the conversation about the prisoners. "The Worldwound is a dark place, to lead so many astray. They may never have been shown mercy before."

Using stabilize on Hosilla and the other enemies.

Anarya looked at Ellena's savage wounds. "First, you all need healing! Gather the fallen far away enough that they will not be revived when I channel my magic."

Ensuring that none of the mongrels are within the radius, Anarya channels the light of her halo across the entire party, gradually healing their injuries.

Channel Energy (3 uses): 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3) = 13 13 points of healing.

"Should we interrogate them here?" Anarya asked. "We could restrain the mongrels and march them back to Neatholm. I can likely revive them all with the magic I have left."

Recovered, Franti dropped to his knees. "The mongrelman we can march back later. Perhaps two of us should return and ask for them to take their own home. These three though," the fool says, looking at the three (Uziel, Wenduag, Hosilla) who attacked him, "seem more than the others." The fool reached into his bag, removing some objects and placing them on the floor. The first was a wooden mask, painted in fierce red paints. The mask was that of a Balor, with four twisting horns, two going up, curving around the top of its head, and two twisting down to the jaw. A single torch, yet unlit. Three candles. Wenduag's arrow. Rope. Caltrops.

If I take a Half Orc's form, do I get a +2 to Intimidate? I ask because it is listed here, not the ability they have on their page. Is anyone's intimidate higher than +8? If you want to be diplomatic, perhaps do that before make my performance.

Alter self will usually only give you the abilities explicitly listed in the spell description, so sadly no +2 to intimidate unless Clebsch gives you a circumstance bonus for the clever disguise. (Also, your URL for that link is broken.)

Karas lurched into the room after Anarya but seeing the cultist on the ground he stumbled over and raised a claw to finish the woman off. This vile woman is just like them so long ago. there is nor redemption for them. There is no solace. It is time for... As he brought his hand down another voice rang in his head Mercy.

In the time it took his fist to come down, he had lost his claws and the blow was diverted to the floor near her head.

He breathed heavily as he collapsed to the ground in fatigue. He looked up to the face of the angel near him and then away. "Not *huff* worth it."

After the healing washed over Ellena, she felt like standing again. She watched, Karas contemplate killing the prisoner. Before she could strike with a blow to knock his aim off, or correct him in any way, he had already done so himself, showing his humanity after all. She nodded in appreciation. The demonblood isn't truly evil after all. He pulled his punch. He's trying to not be evil. Iomedae is wearing off on him, I think. He's gaining my trust...

The crusaders remained true to their principles and made sure none of their foes had died before healing their own wounds. Only Ellena still had remnants of the fight.

Franti did not have to jump to get back up to the room above, as there was a rope let down by the NPCs. Also he wouldn't get any racial bonuses to skills due to alter self. Keep role-playing and indicate when you want to check out any of the rooms you have not yet entered or search the bodies, rooms, etc.

Anarya returned to the room where Hosilla finally fell, inspecting the desk and the case she found within, as the others prepared to interrogate the prisoners.

Karas laid in the room as the healing energy washed over him. Soothing his wounds and removing any signs of a scratch.

He lay on the cool earth in the den of awful worship to dark lords. It was only the light from his companions that kept this from resembling his childhood.

After a few minutes of fatigue, he caught his breath and leaned up to watch the others and mind for any hidden dangers to spring from the shadows as Anarya investigated the lair.

The pouch with a book in it on Hosilla's person has a symbol of Baphomet on the cover and is a book of prayers devoted to Baphomet. It is ornamented with jewels that look to Anarya as if they may be worth about 30 gp. There are 32 gp worth of assorted coins. Mixed in with the coins is a key. In the book is a piece of paper sticking out.

The paper has a note with instructions to Hosilla, signed by initials S.V.

The iron box under the desk is locked. It is about five feet long and two feet by 2 feet tall and wide, with handles on each end so that it could be carried by two people.

Ellena wanted to crush each and every one of the unholy symbols in the room. She's much rather lose whatever they could be sold for than to allow them to continue to exist and corrupt the weak minded fools of the world. "I think we should destroy those awful symbols."

The paladin begins the exploration process with the others. No telling what nasty surprises might be waiting for the group, and they needed their protector, so she took up her shield and sword and began going room to room.

Anarya looked at the book's decorations with disgust. "Agreed. I hardly think we want to be dealing with anyone who'd want to buy a blasphemous book like this anyway."

Blissfully unaware of how dangerous it can be to try to open strange locks without checking them beforehand, Anarya tried the key she found in the iron box, seeing if it opened.

Franti tied up the three cultists, each to a chair, using a little extra rope to ensure they couldn't get out.

The fool took off his belled hat and coral wig, placing them in his bag. He removed his jester attire entirely, clothed in a simple, short sleeved brown shirt and pants. The last of his foolish appeareance, his face paint, was covered as he put on his Demon Mask. "Ellena, that oil flask we had earlier, may I have it?"

"As repugnant as it may be, I think we should take the foul symbols with us. Perhaps more powerful priests or scholars may be able to learn something from them. If not, then they can be destroyed then."

The fool nodded as he wrapped the ropes around the cultists. "For Aravashnial's order, no?" It was strange to wear this mask outside of a performance piece, but in a way, what he would be doing could be seen an act by some. "Or I'll take them. If there are more of the wicked above, we may be able to blend in or infiltrate their numbers... They might get us out of the city if we use them well and have Gods on our side..."

"I'll not use them to blend in! Wearing the idols of a demon? Never. I'd take an honorable death any time rather than do that," Ellena sniffs as she hands over the flask of oil.

Anarya inserted the key into the lock on the steel box under Hosilla's desk. The mechanism was well-oiled and clicked smartly at the turning of the key. The lock opened. Anarya opened the lid and her attention was immediately drawn to a large wooden case almost as long as the iron box. Opening the hasp and the lid of the case, her eyes beheld a longsword of exquisite beauty. The blade is made of gold or appears to be, with a gleaming sharp edge.

Elsewhere in the box Anarya found a leather pouch with some gemstones and two scrolls.

Remember, the traitors and cultists are all negative at the moment and unconscious.

Anarya squinted, looking to see if she could spot any magic on the blade. Using detect magic. "This must be the sword mentioned in this note," she added, holding up the parchment. "It says they planned to corrupt it."

Concentrating for a moment before each one to ask for guidance, she then examined the two scrolls to determine if she could understand their contents.

Karas stood and walked over to see what the angel held. He was stunned by the beauty of the blade held in the humble case. "It's beautiful. It sounds like it's some kind of relic to someone named Yaniel? That doesn't really ring a bell but it must be important if they were looking to corrupt it. Whatever that means. Also we need to find out who S.V. is."

I remember they are unconscious, if they were awake, it'd ruin the surprise ;)

"I'd rather take no death at all. Believe a fool on this, as it is half my craft: it is better to be shamed and alive than dead and forgotten." Franti poured the oil over his body selectively. Dabbles coated his skin, a bit on his commoner attire, but mostly on his demon's mask. A fool on fire was a crowd favorite, the last joke to end a memorable routine of jests and tomfoolery. But this wasn't to be a joke.

"Heal this one first," he says, pointing to Wenduag. He held flint and steel in both hands, and the arrow was at his feet, in front of the bound cultist. Franti raised his mask, kissed his symbol of Picoperi and tucked it beneath his shirt. He lowered the mask, breathed in deeply, and prepared himself.


Are there appropriate knowledge checks that Tauni could make to learn more about the sword or its background, or maybe guess at the initials in the note?

"I won't be able to heal only one unless we move the others," Anarya explained. "It grows harder to focus the light on a single person each time I do it without rest, until it becomes impossible."

Anarya stared at the sword with her sight enhanced to detect magical auras. The sword at first radiated strong abjuration magic, but the aura quickly dimmed and faded, a strange thing she had never seen before.

The scrolls proved to be too inscrutable for Anarya to decipher.

Aravashnial recognized it and said, "Yaniel was a paladin during the 4th crusade. She had a sword called Radiance, a great weapon that was, as I recall, made to look as if it had a golden blade. Perhaps it was an illusion or the gold was fortified with magic. Yaniel had an argument with the leaders of the crusade after Khorramzadeh invaded Kenabres and damaged the wardstone. She set off on her own into the Worldwound and was presumed dead until she returned two years later. She led another attack into the Worldwound, but this time, she was killed by a demon. Her followers returned with her sword, but the magic had gone dark. It was put on display in the Gray Garrison where it remained until it was stolen a few months ago. As for the initials, that would likely be Staunton Vhane, a vile traitor who once was a crusader who betrayed the cause and went over to serve on the side of the demons."

Anevia looked over the note and became agitated as she read. "We must get this information on the traitors' safe houses. Irabeth and the Eagle Watch will want to raid them!" Her face darkened and it did not take much wisdom to guess she was again reminded that her love might not be alive and the Eagle Watch may have been defeated as well.

"What safe houses?" Horgus asked, alarmed. Anevia gave him the note and he read aloud, "Nyserian Manor, Topaz Solutions, and the Tower of Estrod." Ellena took the note and after reading it, summarized it for Anarya.

While weaning the other rooms, Ellena heard the discussions about the note and the sword. She walked into the room with the golden sword. "Can I see the blade," she asked as she stared closely at it. if there was no objection, she picked it up, looking even closer at the hilt and the blade. "Is this the magical blade," she asked out loud as she held it up.

As soon as Ellena grasped the sword's hilt, the sword answered her question by glowing as brightly as a torch or light spell. As the light got brighter, the sword felt lighter.

In the hands of a paladin, the sword is +1 cold iron longsword which can radiate light as a torch on command. Looking at it with detect magic reveals a strong aura of abjuration magic.

"All those names sound familiar, though I don't seem to remember much about them. Estrod... That's that big gray tower in New Kenabres, right? Horgus, do you know anything about these buildings?" Anarya had seen Horgus's discomfort, and gently offered him the chance to open up about what he might know.

Karas blinked in astonishment as the blade exploded into light in Ellena's hand. "I um... think that answers our question?"

Seeing that Franti was setting up to interrogate the mongrelwoman, he stayed in the room with the desk. Interrogation? Torture? I've seen far to much of that than to want to do it myself. I'd rather just end them or turn them over to the mongrels and leave but I'm not leading anyone here.

He sat and watched. Keeping an angle to keep an eye on Anarya and the others out the door.

Wenduag was getting a private performance, something only Opaline had been given. "Wake up, friend. The two of us are going to get to know each other very, very well. "

Franti lightly dances the arrow across her throat. "This would break some of my dearest principles. Truth be told I don't even eat meat, knowing where it comes from." The fool sighs, withdrawing, gesturing towards his nearby Iomedae worshipers. "These are healers, my friend. They'll keep you alive, their God says they have to, and they will resuscitate you each and every time I push you near death's door. This may be over in a matter of minutes. Or we can extend our game for hours, maybe days until I eventually break you."

The fool pulled the bound cultist towards him, mask now directly in front of Wenduag. Franti prayed his eyes don't betray him. "So you'll either answer my questions, or we can start our fun with my earlier ultimatum:" The fool pushed the arrow lightly into Wenduag's throat, not enough to draw blood. He lowered the arrow, waving its head against her chest. "Across the neck, or through the heart?"

Ellena was captivated by the blade. It felt right in her hand, somehow. She smiled as it lit up at her touch. Radience indeed, she thought.

She was pulled out of her reverie by the Fool's interrogation. She had seen bad things on the battle field, so threats of violence to coerce cooperation weren't viewed that harshly by her. But she wouldn't allow any harm to come to be prisoners. That would be unbecoming to the Inheritor. She watched closely, ready to strike the Fool's hand away if he went too far with his threats.

Anarya was almost taken aback by the sudden change that had come over Franti, his aggressive posture, his fearsome manner. He's an impressive actor, she thought. She couldn't hear the words he was saying, but she saw him threaten Wenduag with the arrow, and pause as if waiting for a reply.

"You tried to kill us, mongrel." Anarya said from behind the bound prisoner. The light from her halo took on a different cast - a harsher light, not the soft illumination of healing from before. "That makes you an enemy. You'd be offered the protection of a prisoner of war... if that was all you did." She leaned down close to her. "But... you threw your lot in with the demons. We don't take demon thralls as prisoners. Not after we found out what he does to them. If they'd just have cooperated, we'd have been allowed to protect them from him."

She sighed, and stood up, circling around to stand next to Franti. "I don't think this one's smart enough to save herself." She smirked at the bound mongrel before turning to Franti. "Get your kicks in quick, though... Karas is busy cleaning the blood off his claws. If he gets out here and sees you hogging the prisoner, I think he's going to want to add another mongrel eyeball to his collection, and we don't want that kind of mess."

Then Anarya spoke. The angel twisting words of hate. It was hard to believe. Then she spoke of him collecting eyes and he knew this farce wouldn't draw blood. Still. It never sat very well with him.

Wenduag revived, tugged at the ropes binding her enough to know they would hold too well to justify an attempt at escape when others held weapons at the ready. She watched Franti with little emotion. She did glance around to see that Hosilla and Uziel were still alive. She looked a bit more, as if hoping to see the fate of her fellow mongrel men and women, but did nothing further.

When Franti finished his threatening and Anarya added her portion, the mongrel woman sat with her back straight and said nothing. She did not seem afraid of torture nor did she welcome it. Perhaps she would cooperate. It would take an actual question posed to her to know for sure whether she was persuaded to cooperate.
