Darst nods, and his eyes seem to shine the same way they did the previous night. He stealthily moves down the tunnel.

"No issues Izbahn Douvark" says Amrunelara noting Izbahn's emphasis on the word team. "This is one demon that will soon be returning to the abyss."

She draws her exquisite curved blade in a long drawn motion letting the light of Naomi's amulet catch it at just the right angle. She looks around for Darst hoping to inspire a bit of fear into the goblin only to notice that has already stalked off into the shadows.

Damn. He could betray us at any moment! Must not loose sight of him! The tall wirey elf sticks to the shadows as best she can, unaccustomed to being underground and missing the light of the stars already she tries to keep an eye on darst as best she can.

Stealth1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Perception1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

The goblin soon dissapears out of Amrunelara's sight. Her grip tightens on the hilt of her blade as she expects to feel the cold steel in her back at any moment.

I don't believe anyone has a rank in knowledge(planes).

Darst:
Darst creeps slowly forward in the tunnel. While the tunnel is pretty straight and lacks much hiding spots, the goblin does his best to remain silent and unnoticed. After about half a minute of sneaking ahead of the group, the goblin scout finds something of note. There's a side tunnel that branches off on the left-hand or west side. This opening was bricked over in the past but someone punched through some time ago. Farther ahead in the main tunnel, almost to the limit of his darkvision, Darst can see another side tunnel. This one is on the right-hand (east) wall. The main passage continues its northeasterly direction beyond these two openings.

Izbahn's a wizard, why wouldn't people assume he knew about demons after how he was talking about how other wizards keep qausits as familiars?

That is why I relied IC what he has been taught about it, but no other details.

Male Goblin Rogue 3

Darst creeps back to Izbahn. He jumps out of the dark corners he's kept to right behind Moonlance, enjoying her inability to follow him. Anybody can tell that he loves the darkness. "There be's two sides tunnels up ahead, and a mains ones, too. Oh! One was bricked off, but smacked through."

Izbahn smiles at Darst, pleased at his skills. If Amrunelara wants to take care of Darst, she will have to find him first.

He whispers quietly to the goblin, "Darst, take us to that tunnel which was bricked off, I want to check that out."

The side tunnel is much like Darst described it. It's on the left wall of the main tunnel and heads west. At the limit of the magical light emitted by Naomi's amulet, the tunnel seems to slowly turn north. The brick wall was built at the tunnel's opening. Only the left and right edge of the brick wall remains, as well plenty brick and mortar debris on the floor. Since most of this debris is to the west of what remains of the wall, it seems that what ever destroyed it wanted to go down the side tunnel rather then head out.

Kortus:
From your expertise with stone and masonry, you can tell that neither the tunnels nor the brick wall are very old. A few decades old probably.

Izbahn points at Darst, and then points down the side corridor. Once he heads down there he motions for Amrunelara to follow him.

He will cast Light for Amrunelara if she requests it.

Male Goblin Rogue 3

Darst nods, though he seems nervous about going off alone (as I assume you intended). He sneaks off down the side tunnel.
1d20 + 19 ⇒ (15) + 19 = 34

Female Elf Fighter 2

Amrunelara jumps and brings her blade round to bear as darst reappears behind her, she snarls lowering her blade slightly as the goblin hops off towards his master. I'd like to see you try that under the stars you wretched creature she thinks to her self.

Upon sighting the wall Amrunelara's first thought is to the destruction evident here, hoping that it wasnt a single creature that did this. As Izbahn motions for her to follow she frowns, not about to follow an armed goblin into a pitch black tunnel. "Whilst my sight is exceptional Izbahn, I have no goblin eyes. I need light, at least a little"

Assuming Izbahn or Naomi complies she heads down the tunnel after Darst keeping a firm grip on her sword as she keeps her eyes peeled for the sneaky goblin.

Izbahn watches Amrunelara react to the goblin, and casts his light cantrip on her Let me know what you want it cast on please. and wonders if this was a good idea sending both of them down there together. Well it was too late now. No matter, they need to learn to work together, if not like each other.

Once Amrunelara has headed down he motions to the rest of the group, and heads down the tunnel following the elf warrior.

Darst:
Darst moves into the side passage, clinging to the rough wall as the tunnel slowly turns toward the north. The little goblin scout stops after about 150 feet when he sees two openings in the rocky wall to his right. With a quick glance, he sees that the closest opening widen into a sort of cave that looks about 30 feet deep. The room seems empty with little other then a few loose rocks on the ground. Darst didn't see any other exit to this cave so it would seem to be a dead end. The goblin would probably have to enter the cave to make sure of these two observations as the cave is full of nooks and crannies created by the uneven cave walls. Of course, he could also just go by this entrance to take a look at the second opening or simply continue his way north in the current tunnel. In any case, the shiny elfie is slowly coming up behind him.

The others follow Darst, from a distance, with the light enchanted elven warrior in front. As they all move further down this side tunnel they can't help but feel something that's hard to describe. It's a sort of dread, the fear of facing someone who's extremely angry and resentful toward you. Perhaps if you gave in to your own frustrations and anger, it would make you feel better ...

Izbahn creeps along, following Amrunelara passage along the tunnel passageway. He feels the fear growing on his soul, and thinks of his father, and how he was treated by him. His gaze flashes towards Amrunelara and her own reaction to his friendship to Darst. He remembers the look of rage on her face, masking her beauty as surely as if a bandage had been ripped off a pus filled wound. His own rage starts to build, and he starts to call forth a spell, to vent his...rage? Wait a moment, here , this is what Darst felt before!

He calls a halt to the group, and says in a hoarse voice, "Stop for a moment." He then starts to whisper a minor incanataion.

Cast Detect Magic and scan the passageway.

Darst stops. He glares at Moonlance. "Move it, elfy. You's too bright. You trying to gets us caughts?/ Or is you's dumber than you look?"

Female Human Cleric lv3

Naomi's knuckles go white as she clenches her mace tightly, trying to keep her emotions under control and stop herself before she releases them in a way that would hurt everyone. The image of Dramen with his throat slashed, being eaten by Nualia/Lamashtu...

Dammit, she had better control than this! She wouldn't give in, not yet, not here! She needed something to calm her down, but what? Two images overtake the previous ones: Dramen at the Last Home, looking well and unmarked by a blade. Then.. Izbahn trying to hide a smile and failing. That was earlier today wasn't it, when she'd been scaring Darst? Naomi's breathing slows down, returning to normal, as her rage fades away.

"This is a terrible place." Naomi whispers under her breath.

"You should listen to your master child of lamashtu" says Amrunelara quietly, the light from her sword sending shadows flickering down the passage. "Whats wrong? Afriad the light will dispel your tricks!?" her voice, and temper, starts to rise as an image of dark shadowy figures stalking through the forest flases into her mind.

Shadows creeping from beneath the earth, bloodied blades dripping with elven blood, magic as dark as night itself, the pain, the anguish, unstoppable evil, only held at bay by...the light? The elven warrior stares at her sword for a moment, confusion spreading through her mind. I have not been that angry for decades she thinks pondering the images, the sooner my eyes glimspe the open sky the better

Her sight slips past the pulsing sword and rests on the shadowy goblin as the fury returns. She continues foward seething with silent anger, until Izbahn voice echoes from further down the passage calling a halt. What now?! she thinks to herself as she stands still almost shaking with fury.

Izbahn:
Izbahn doesn't detect any clear magical auras but there are some magical emanations coming from somewhere in the north east. These emanations are faint here but the source must powerful if Izbahn is capable to detect them despite the distance and the walls. Even with his extensive magical training, Izbahn can't fathom what this source could be.

I'm gonna need a perception check from everyone. You all have a -2 distance penalty except for Darst.

"This is why I hate working with groups..." Naomi whispers as she scans the area ahead.

Amrunelara sways from side to side shifting her weight from foot to foot while thinking. You guys are too fast for me sometimes, hehe, but I'll just roll with it. Using the perception previously rolled for Darst, he doesn't see much more then what I revealed in the previous spoiler.

For Izbahn:

The tunnel goes toward the north now and the emanations come from the NE. The cave opening that Darst is scouting is on the east wall of the tunnel. Hopefully this clears it up a bit.

When the whole group advances and gets closer to the opening Darst's peeking into, Whisper raises his head and start visibly sniffing the air. A soft but continuous growl soon follows.

Venmirl:
Just before the cat started growling, you heard a sort of scuffing sound coming from somewhere ahead. It sounded like claws being drag on a stony floor.

Male Human Shoanti Inquisitor 3

Venmirl wishes he could be more of a moderator between their new attractive elf companion and the big-talking goblin. After a few more rounds of verbal sparing, he decides to move up to Amrunelara's position and reassure he that she is not alone, but the timing just isn't right. Just as he moves up a few feet he hears something up ahead.

He tries to get the group's attention by making a few clicks with his tongue, sounding somewhat like a squirrel found in the forest. Not sure his new friends would understand a common signal that his Shoanti brothers would recognize instantly, he repeats the alarm much louder once more. As a few of them turn to look at him he does a few hand signals to warn them that something is up ahead, sounding like an animal of some sort. He points towards the direction from which he heard the sound, I'm not sure exactly where that is.

Izbahn nods at Venmirl, acknowledging the Shoanti expertise in these matters, and allows him to move up next to Amrumelara. He takes his club out and grips it tightly, silently warning hte group of inpending combat. He then murmers quietly a protective spell, Mage Armor, duration 2 hours, yay! and pulls Naomi behind him protectively shielding her from the ambush.

Male Goblin Rogue 3

Darst shrugs, and decides to sneak into the opening. He hears Venmirl clicking his tongue, but assumes it's a nervous habit and so ignores it.
1d20 + 19 ⇒ (14) + 19 = 33

Unknown Reptilian

Just as Darst is about to sneak into the cave, a pair of two-legged creatures rushes out to attack the exploring group! These horribly deformed humanoids, hairless and emaciated, lurch out of the shadows. Their unnaturally long arms end in three-fingered talons, and their legs bend like those of a dog. A writhing network of bulging veins form dark blue patterns across their pallid skin. But worst of all is their faces. Their noses is little more than pairs of slits, and their eyes are bulging and red. The lower jaw splits in half at the chin into two wretched arms that end in tiny three-fingered hands to either side an open gullet with a lolling tongue (Yummy).

The first of the pair simply fly by the hidden goblin to advance on Amrunelara, apparently eager to rip her to shreds. The second creature, trailing behind, notices the goblin trying to hide by hugging the wall. It raises it claw to attack the surprised goblin.

In this surprise round, the monsters move forward while Venmirl try to warn all of you that you're not alone. His action will give a +2 circumstance bonus to the group initiative. Just a note, Izbahn didn't have time to cast his mage armor but he can do it for this round, if he wishes to. Also, the creature in front isn't aware of Darst but the second one is.

Initiative!
Yours': 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
The monsters': 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

The first creature lunges at the elven warrior, trying to open her belly with its sharp talon. It can't get through her chainshirt however, leaving her body unharmed. Unfortunately, her face isn't as well protected, and the horrible creature's mouth almost rips some skin off her face. The bite doesn't get a good hold in the flesh and the elf escape with 'only' a nasty cut on her chin (4 points of damage and see below*). The second creature likewise launches a series of attacks on Darst. Perhaps hurrying its attacks, the creature's blows are clumsy and only a claw swipe does some significant damage on the small goblin (5 points of damage).

*Amrunelara senses a great rage mounting in her after being wounded by that bite attack. She must succeed a DC 12 will save or be overcome by such a raging feeling that it disturbs the actions of her mind and body (she would be effectively sickened).

It's now your turn in round 1. Oh, and here's a map

Male Human Shoanti Inquisitor 3

Round 1
Venmirl lets out an involuntary guttural yell and pushes past Izbahn to stand next to the elven warrior. He has been waiting all day to swing his morningstar and finally gets the chance!

Morningstar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

You have to be kidding me! At least we're not playing with a critical fumble deck...

Male Goblin Rogue 3

Darst shrieks in fear and pain. He leaps into the air and stabs down at his attacker as he falls.
I jump over it and try to land on the creature, slashing furiously. I'm not sure how that would work rules-wise, but my Acrobatics roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15, damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1.
EDIT: Okay, that means I could jump seven feet into the air, but possibly suck once I'm up there.

Izbahn will cast the Mage Armor as indicated before for his round 1 action.

BTW, how can we tell if the monsters bite has affected her differently, as she was filled with rage since joining the group, he he.

Good thing Naomi has a good Will save. I can't say the same for Darst.

Female Elf Fighter 2

Round 1
Amrunelara's eyes bulge at the sight of the monstrous creatures. She feels the scraping of claws against her armour and thanks Desna only to feel searing pain course through her face. Her pupils dilate as she feels something primal coursing through her.

Yeah, real clumsy. Admittedly, the damage could have been better. :P

Unknown Reptilian

Venmirl moves forward, eager to enter the fight. He raises his weapon high to deliver a powerful strike but fails miserably when the morningstar hits the low ceiling.

Darst responds to the weird humanoid's assault with some more violence of his own. The small goblin propels himself on the wall to jump on the creature's shoulders before stabbing madly at it. The flip-knife does pierce the monster's tough skin but it doesn't leave any deep wounds.

Overcomed by a supernatural rage, Amrunelara rains blows after blows on her attacker. While most of them hit, her curved blade is a weapon made for precise strikes, not violent blows, and these leave the creature almost unharmed.

Finally, Izbahn activates his usual magical protection.

Naomi and Kortus (and friend) haven't acted yet. Rereading the handle animal and druid companion sections, I think Kortus could add one trick to those Whisper knows. The 'hunt' packages gives 6 tricks (which is the max for a int 2 animal) but lvl 2 druids get one bonus trick in addition to that.

Darst:
Or maybe it was the opposite and Darst, while fleeing, accidentally led the goblins to the brothers.
This one is the one that makes the most sense to me. But I'm not sure it is necessary. For one, I don't know how she could find out (except interrogate Darst maybe) since the two surviving brothers have left town. Second, just being a goblin, any goblin, will be enough to create some drama. Now, if you really want to add more drama, I can always make it so that Darst knows some of the goblins implicated in the raid and/or they know him/of him.

So it looks like the game is kind of slowing down. Looks like some new blood might be in order.
Dragonborn hasn't posted anywhere in a while, and on one of his other PbPs he said he was feeling down. Could be that he's taking a break and didn't get the chance to tell anybody.
Of course, his most recent post was only five days ago, so it could be he just fell ill or suchwhat. All the same, it might be best to NPC Naomi.
Alternatively, we could try Aubrey's strategy, where he lets the other players 'NPC' their fellows, since three guys is an awful lot for one guy to handle.
Of course, I'm just brainstorming here. This is a great PbP, but I've seen a lot of them die because players were leaving left and right. :/

Yeah, this happens in every PbP thread I join. *sniff*. I would wait for Reptilian for official notice, but bringing in new players would not be a bad thing, once we finish this encounter. Also the NPC for your PC partner is a great idea, I saw this in the Arcadia game Nazard is running.

Yeah, sorry guys, I should have updated yesterday but it's just a bit demoralizing to lose some original players. I'll try to do it at lunch time today. As for new players, I should probably get 1 or 2 once this encounter is over. Calla & Syeira will then leave to pursue other goals.

That's not uncommon. I don't DM much, because it's a lot of work, and when you feel less people are truly enjoying the game it just makes it harder.

Every PbP loses a few players, though (Aubrey lost about three in his Eberron Campaign in the first fifty pages). My only advice is to keep at it. As long as it's running, I expect you will retain at least a few of the original batch (and I'm pretty sure I'm not going anywhere).
This PbP is one of the few PbPs that makes it this far without dying down.

Female Human Cleric lv3

I didn't want to put this in the IC thread, but I think my HP and Skills are right(except for Perform, which I mixed up with Profession).

HP: 8(1st lv max?)+2(Con)+5(8/2=5)+2(Con)=17

Skill Ranks: 2(base)+1(Favorite Class)+1(Human)=4 points at each level, for a total of 8 at 2nd level.

Added Goblin, as my language, he he.

Naomi Fairchild wrote:

Yeah, you get 4 hp (well 4.5) at level 2 here not 5. Next level, assuming you take another lvl of a class with d8s, you'll get another 4.5, or 5 in that case since the 0.5 add up. Hopefully that's clear enough.

Female Human Cleric lv3

Ooooh, I see what went wrong with my thought process now. You said "0.5" and I read "50%" and got the math wrong anyway. My bad, sorry.

That's really the only one that might work with the 'learning a language in a week' issue. :P

First, welcome to the new players.

Second, don't be afraid to ask question about the character creation process. As for the starting gold, I've decided that you get the average starting gold for your class + 600 gp. This should put you somewhat on par with the group (considering what was just found on Tsuto).

I'll post more stuff later.

First of all thank you for giving me the chance to assist these great players.

I will get the equipment purchased asap, but wanted to ask if items in the Adventurer's Armory was allowed, or just the core book?

Also are there any unique animals to this region, or the standard druid companion choices?

I am looking forward to gaming with you all!

Adventurer's Armory stuff should be fine. I've already used one item from that book against the group. As for animals from the region, the RotRL player guide has a few.

With thick, mottled gray hides and forward-curving horns (reaching 2-1/2 feet in length), adult aurochs often weigh well over a ton. Aurochs have the same statistics as an advanced 7 HD bison.

Cindersnake: These giant red-patterned vipers hide amid the crags and fine silt of the Cinderlands, crippling prey with a painful, burning venom. Cindersnakes have the same statistics as Medium vipers.
Donkey Rat: Snowy white rodents the size of small dogs (in some places known as capybaras or giant guinea pigs), the donkey rats native to Varisia’s coast are popular pets (and meals) throughout the southern lands. Donkey rats have the same statistics as dire rats (without the disease ability) and are CR 1/4.
Fire Pelt: These black-and-red-furred mountain lions stalk much of northwestern Varisia. The color of their pelts changes from predominantly black to a range of autumnal colors with the seasons. Fire pelts have the same statistics as leopards.
Giant Lizard: Geckos the size of ponies prowl the moist sea cliffs and forests of southern Varisia, feasting on rodents, giant insects, and even the occasional goblin (see Pathfinder #1). Upon the Storval Plateau, aggressive horned spirestalker lizards hide among rocky outcroppings and fearlessly attack anything that comes in sight.
Storm Roc: Proud raptors with wings the color of thunderheads and crownlike crests of tousled feathers, storm rocs are said to live for hundreds of years and eventually grow to the size of the true rocs. Storm rocs have the same statistics as eagles.

Cindersnake are like Snake, Viper ; Fire Pelts are Small Cats ; the Storm Roc is like any other Bird. You can find the Auroch in the Bestiary (or the PRD if you don't have that book). A Giant Gecko or a Donkey Rat would be, respectively, a modified Monitor Lizard and a modified Dire Rat. Of course, most other companion choices are also perfectly fine options.

Thanks for the info, my fiance took me out for a birthday dinner and show last night, but I will get Kort finished today. It was a tough call between the Fire Pelt and Bear, but I think I will go with the regional animal and select Whisper, the Fire Pelt.

:) I lose a Dutch player but gain an English one, my game is still international hehe.

Anyway, just a few words on the background. It's fine but it doesn't really work with the little amount of time that has happen in game between the goblin raid and 'now'. I don't think your character could have made it all the way from the Mierani forest to Sandpoint. Instead I propose that your organization (that could be tasked with containing the dark menace* that looms in Celwynvian) had sent you to Magnimar, maybe to investigate if the 'menace'* is involved in a series of murders happening there. Once in Magnimar, however, you received a missive from another agent, a ranger named Shalelu, telling you that she could use help with her investigation of a goblin incursion in the Sandpoint region. Or you could have a better idea. I leave the choice up to you. It's your character after all.

*Spoiler:
It's the Drow but don't tell anyone ... It's the big elven secret :).

That sounds fine Reptilian I can't think of anything better right now and having a contact in sandpoint would make for more roleplaying options.

Writing up the character stats as we speak...

I think I am all finished with the Equipment and have included the spells I think he would have prepared with leaving the woods shortly after Jacob's death.

I am not 100% sure how long you want him to be in town, as I see him as being able to have just arrived, or has lived there for 10 years and worked as a quiet mason who went to the woods by himself in the evenings.

I will find the stats in the PFCB for small cat and get Whisper's stats up as well.

Also anyone who has a few minutes, please feel free to look over the sheet to make sure I haven't messed up too much.

Amrunelara is good to go and is ready and awaiting her other trait :)

Feel free to look over and check for any mistakes everyone.

You know Kortus, the PFRPG Rulebook and the PRD both have stats for small cats. Given the fact Firepelts are described as mountain lions though, maybe large cat stats should be used?

Well you made me doubt, how big is a mountain lion compared to tigers and lions? A quick trip at wikipedia tells me the biggest mountain lion/cougar/puma are around 200 pounds while tigers & lions (which are the Large Cats examples) can easily reach 500 pounds. So there you have it ... Small cat it is (small being a relative term).

Isn't there a medium option? That has to be around a mountain lion's size. After all, for an average human 200 pounds seems pretty reasonable.

EDIT: A big cat starts out Medium. So it could really go either way: An abnormally small firepelt who grows to normal size, or a normal sized firepelt who grows to an abnormally large one.

I have had the hardest time with choosing the animal that best fit with my view of Kortus' past. While the story part of me would have loved to get to include how the town mason's work wagon was pulled by an Auroch, I didn't think he would have a good time in narrow confines that we might have to go visit.

In the end, I chose the Fire Pelt as his pet and Kortus will see the animal as an aspect of mentor's spirit still traveling with him. While this won't have any stat bonus, it will give me some downtime material to include in the stray color posts we get to include.

I will copy down the listing for Whisper and then edit it to fit in the stat blocks.

Sorry for the rambles. :)

Meh, that whole size change is a bit like the language in a week with linguistics. The way I see it, unexperienced druids can only gain juvenile companions (or something like that) and they grow as the adventures progress (naturally or magically, depending on how fast the levelling goes). Anyway, a Big Cat would be fine too.

I've reviewed the two new characters and here's my usual rundown:

Amrunelara is mostly fine except 2 little things. XP should be at 1300 not 1000 and your armor (or as you say armour) check penalty should be -2. At least until you gain the Armor Training 1 ability next level or buy a masterwork chain shirt.

I got a few more things about Kortus but it's just normal since he's more complex and comes with a companion. Here goes.

  • Hp should be 18 (lvl1: 8+3=11 and lvl2: 11+4+3=18)
  • Your CMB is +2 like your melee attack bonus.
  • CMD is 13 not +12.
  • Skills are fine unless you want to transfer 1 or 2 ranks into hps.
  • Druids aren't proficient with bows, sorry, so you might want to change your longbow purchase.
Now for Whiskers, I mean Whisper.
  • I forgot to mention this but companions get average hps (like most npcs), even for their first HD. So, Whisper should have 4+5+4+3=16 hp.
  • His touch AC should be 17.
  • You can add '+1' (str) to his attacks' damage (ie bite 1d4+1 plus trip and 2 claws 1d2+1)
  • CMB is +2 (2(BAB)+1(str)-1(size))
  • CMD shouldn't have a '+'. It's just 18.
  • Perception is a class skill for animals so it should be +5 (assuming you put 1 rank there and 2 in stealth)
  • On that note, I'll give Whisper the +4 bonus to Stealth when in undergrowth that Leopards get (Darst gets competition :P).
  • Also, you might want to consider Weapon finesse or Agile Manouevers as one of his feat ... just saying :).
Hopefully this isn't too much stuff to take in :).

Thanks for going over the sheet and I will make the changes asap.

I added the Longbow as I read that all followers of Erastil were proficient with bows, but if you want to keep it standard ruleset, I will change it.

After going over the feats for Whisper, I think you are right that giving him both those feats would be useful, as they would allow him to maximize his Speed and Dexterity when combat starts. Great call on that.

I updated everything else and have pulled the bow to keep things easy. :)

Yeah, a cleric of Erastil would get that but I think druids have enough going for them as it is. That being said, nothing is stopping you from taking Martial prof. (longbow) as your feat.
