Breaking the Bank (Inactive)

Game Master Mowque

1 to 50 of 132 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

Intricate planning, elegant solutions, coordinated assaults and, of course, the dashing display of panache, all are marks of the Absalom criminal. No vault is safe, no safe unbreakable, no purse beyond reach. Their arenas are many, ranging from empty misty streets, to ornate ballrooms, to busy bazaars. All places have have their targets, every object a price and no one is beyond the reach of the true thieving master.

Welcome to Breaking the Bank, a game of master thieves. I am looking for two clever, cunning souls willing to risk lives and limbs to perform heists of the highest caliber and earn fame, glory and of course, treasure. A potential career of glittering achievements and legend stretches out before you, people singing of your exploits in taverns, merchants cursing your name and lords buying heavy duty vaults at the mere mention of your coming.

That dream seems far off at the present, however. Both of your will start off locked up in the Black Whale, the infamous floating prison of Absalom For a crime of your choice. The two of you cellmates, you must hatch a daring plan to escape this place and get to work, for the call of ill-gotten gains reaches out to you. Absalom is a vast city with plenty of ripe fruit for the picking! Do you have the brains, the skills, the bravery to rob an entire city blind and get cheered for doing it?

So yeah, this is a game of robbing hard to rob places in daring ways. Think Ocean's 11 mixed with Robin Hood with a dash of the Great Escape. It will be episodic and character driven with many goals and targets provided, with you deciding how to go about them. We will start in Absalom but may move farther afield as you plunder the place.

Looking for a Pair of players so build someone who can play nice with others. Recruiting NPCs will be a big part of the game so social skills will come in handy. While you are master thieves I'm looking for lovable rouges not viscous cutthroats so no Evil, baby-eating characters, please.

Hoping for a game full of well-planned heists, criminal hi-jinks and staying one step ahead of rival thieves and the City Watch both.

Interested? Look below.

Things I want in your backstory:

Why you are a thief?

Your favorite past exploit/crime/?

How did you get caught and locked up in the Black Whale?

What is a crime you've always wanted to commit? It can be as vague as 'I've always wanted to seal art' to specific as “I've always wanted to steal Margrave Rienhold's opera gloves”. Give me a window into your character.

And list three other NPCs your character is connected to, either through love/hate/rivalry/contact/blood. Be creative with these for they will be my main tools at first.

Recruitment will be open for three weeks, until May 11th. Any questions, please ask! Look forward to some interesting characters

Dotting. This seems really interesting.

Would you consider a Kitsune? Their Realistic Likeness ability, combines with Fox Shape, would make for a killer thief.

there is some interest and some trepidation. Heist games are very difficult to run. How do you see this working?

I'll tentatively allow it. It does fit the theme of things, but I'll have to review the build (but that is true for everyone, I suppose!)

Philo Pharynx wrote:

What part has you worried, more then a normal game? I do find that PBP is far more forgiving then live games for unusual concepts and such.

But generally I foresee a 'target' being selected by the PCs (for whatever IC reasons), casing the joint, planning how to do it, hire/recruiting/bring various interesting NPCs, the 'job taking place, various plans either working or not, then getting to the hideout with loot. Cut to triumphant victory feast. Rather episodic, but a cast of various NPCs will probably build and some simple plot arise out of the various events.

I also plan on using some sort of very simple "Legend" system that , based on how daring the thefts were, earning the PCs street cred that can be used in various ways.

(I am perfectly willing to admit I have missed things.)

I'd love to try that with a Vigilante :) noble by day, thief by night. :D

The Chess wrote:

Look forward to your application.

Specifically, what I was wondering is how much detail we'd get about the target. In casing the joint, you potentially need a big amount of data to plan a heist. It's a huge investment for the GM.

Hia Mowque! Another chance to get in one of your (Semi)Solo Games, another day :)
I was also thinking of creating a vigilantie, the class screams "Good Fit" for this game :)

2 quick questions for this game, if I took the Renown social talent, could I set up my social identity after I got out of jail? It would take a while but that way my social identity wouldnt be tied up with being a criminal.

Second question, how powerful and specialized do we have to be? Is it ok to be middling-to-good in 3 or 4 areas or should we be taking Spell Focus or Power Attack or Skill Focus to be really good in 1 or 2 areas?
We can create the characters to be powerful, but often limited jn and of themselves or we can create the illusion of power by having everyone else be weaker in compairison.

I was thinking of taking Pull Into the Shadows as a Vigilante Talent without any extra investment as a neat tool in my arsenal but with only 3/4 BAB and no additional investment it probably wont succeed all that often in a high powered campaign :(

Renown wrote:
Renown (Ex): The vigilante becomes known for deeds and abilities regardless of his current identity. This renown grants him favorable treatment in civilized company and lends him an air of menace while facing down his enemies. While he is in his social identity, a vigilante can spend 1 week gaining renown among the locals of any community of no more than about 200 individuals (a village, if using settlement population ranges). This could be the entire community or a smaller neighborhood in a larger settlement. He must spend at least 4 hours each day socializing and making contacts. After spending 1 week doing this, whenever he is in his social identity, all NPCs in the community have a starting attitude toward him that is one category better, as long as each person’s initial attitude would have at least been indifferent (see the Diplomacy skill description). While he gains renown in an area using his social identity, he also spreads rumors and tales about his vigilante identity. Once he has gained renown in a community, he gains a +4 circumstance bonus on Intimidate checks whenever he is in his vigilante identity. This bonus applies only while he is near the community in which he has gained renown; he must be within a number of miles equal to his vigilante level. A vigilante can hold renown in a limited number of communities (normally one, with other social talents allowing two). If he gains renown in a new community, he must decide which one of his previous communities to lose. These effects are subject to GM approval. For example, the GM might rule that an NPC or monster has not heard any tales about the vigilante. Or, a foe may have a starting attitude toward him that’s one category worse, rather than one category better.
Pull Into the Shadows wrote:
Pull into the Shadows (Ex): As a full-round action, the vigilante can move up to his speed toward an opponent who is unaware of his presence (or who considers him an ally) and make a single attack against that opponent. If the attack hits, he can attempt a drag combat maneuver against that enemy with a +4 bonus and without provoking an attack of opportunity. If the drag succeeds, the vigilante doesn’t need to have enough movement remaining to move with the enemy. The vigilante can’t use this ability on a true ally or a willing target.

PBP is a wonderful thing. I am willing to give the blood type of the lumberjack who cut the wood for the front door if you want to do the research and take the time.

We'll have to RP it a bit but yes, I'm ok with that.

As for the next question, that is up to you. Mechanically, Pathfinder tends to reward relentless specialization but the plot will play to your strengthens (and weaknesses).

I see a couple of people thinking vigilante, which I am thinking about, that or playing with the unchained rogue.

Flavor-wise, I'm thinking of playing a reclusive author who's recently become quite popular with the young ladies recently. What no one knows is that she's actually a successful thief with a love of books. I'll have to work on that some.

GM Mowque, is it okay if my character has enough separation between her "public" persona and her thief persona that the guards don't have a clue who they've caught?

AdamWarnock wrote:

Sounds good to me, very intetesting.

Dotting for interest. I was thinking either a kitsune rogue or a gnome illusionist of some sort. Since Daedalus has mentioned the kitsune, I'll work on the gnome idea.

What are your thoughts on illusions as a GM? Are you a "interaction with illusions = looking at them" GM or of the opinion that until the npc tries to touch or affect the illusion, they haven't interacted and don't get a save?

Cool, working on it now.

By the way, How are we handling HP?

Dotting. This looks quite interesting.

My ideas are scattered at the moment, but I am currently considering a Vigilante, a Mesmerist, an Investigator, or a Bard. I have a question though: would you consider allowing a Fetchling character? The race's focus on stealth, persuasion, and intrigue seem like a good fit for the campaign, and it could be easily justified as a spy, thief, or other such individual from Shadow Absalom.

I try for a compromise. If it is something wildly out of place I'll often give the NPCs a save but if it is something normal they usually don't until they start interacting with it. I know it isn't perfect but it is a rules gray area.

AdamWarnock wrote:

Oops, missed it.

HP: Full for 1rst level, 1/2 for the rest.

I'm playing a fetchling right now in a campaign. They do fit thematically but they do have some strong abilities. I'll say yes (for now) but don't take some of the more OP alternate racial traits. Fair?

Dark Archive

What's the scope of this? 1 level? Longer?

I have a UnRogue/Bard with aspirations of the updated Lion Blade PrC that I'd like to submit.

Master Elodin wrote:

I'm figuring on one level 'a job'. Maybe one for escaping the Black Whale, if it is epic enough.

Chapel36 wrote:

Could be interesting.

I'll have the rest of the character sheet down when I get out of work, but story's the most important thing to me, so...

The Black Whale huh? The worst part about it, is I didn't even commit a crime for this one. Sure, I've pulled off my fair share of robberies. But it feels wrong being arrested for a crime I didn't even do. Worse yet, I was framed. That spiteful tiefling Jerrux - sellout. And all because he didn't get the Blackrose job, so he set me up on some fake score. He'll get his - when I get out of here, that is. I've never killed anyone on purpose before. He might be the first.

Guess, since I have time, I could tell you how this all started.
My brother was sick. Real sick. Like deadly sick. Some super plague or something. Not sure what it was. I'll leave that to the medics. Couldn't afford a doctor. Needed some money quick, so I decided the only way to come by some coins that fast was to take it. Slippery slope, this thought process is. The doctor was good. He was doing a good job, but my brother, Heihachi, couldn't quite shake it, so the doctor kept visiting, and the bills kept coming in. So it was back to the proverbial well. One thing I learned. Once you're ok with doing a thing once, doing it again ain't so hard.

Since then, Heihachi's gotten better, but now it's too hard to keep looking him in the eye, day after day. He'd be ashamed of me. Worse yet he'd speak some shame about dishonoring the family and whatnot. He's a good man, but sometimes he get's real self-righteous, ya know? So I had to leave.

It wasn't too long before I got "employed" on a job-to-job basis, after I arrived in Varisia. Once I proved my worth, I got involded in an unsanctioned "guild" (calling it that would be glorifying it greatly). I got a lead on a big one. A merchant in Korvosa was transporting some jewels from the bank of Abadar to a ship for transport. After weeks of planning, I made off with the jewels and the ship to go along with it. I thought I had done it all unseen, but some begger saw the whole thing go down on the docks. Said it was a fox-folk who done it. They started calling me the Jade Fox. I bet they thought they were cute, with me being Kitsune, and us coming from Tian Xia and all. Trouble was, the jewels were emeralds. Witless racists. Jade indeed!

So now my ship's brought me to Absalom, only I had to sell it to score a flat here. And now I've lost that too. Probably the rest of the load as well. Talk about some bad luck! From my own ship to sitting imprisoned here in the Black Whale.

First thing I do when I get out of this cell is hit the flat. See if there's anything left. Second is see if Lovely is around. She's my cut-out. I get all my jobs from her, and if I haven't got any work, at least I can get some leads from her. She should be somewhere around the Crimson Coin. Third is track down that no-good Jerrux. He's gonna pay.

Very cool, I like it so far. May I ask why a kitsune? As far as I can tell the story would have been the same had they been human or half-elf or something. It doesn't count against you or anything, just asking.

Hmmm...

I'm having trouble deciding between an Exploiter Wizard and a Razmiran Priest Sorcerer. Yes, they're both really powerful classes, but at the same time, this would be the perfect campaign for either of them. (Super versatile, really smart for the wizard, or charming con man for the sorcerer)

Picking a build, always the hardest part. Both sound cool to me.

Sure. It actually started with the idea of wanting some thief rooted in some sort of Japanese lore. I had an idea that i scrapped but the character was named Jade Fox so i thought why not make her an actual Fox. Then i thought the daring bravado seemed swashbucklery and when i thought about it the mechanics really made the idea shine. I don't have a problem having her be human. Just envisioned the disguise thing. Plus she probably spends more time in some fox form.

Why you are a thief?
Hmm, if I had to pick a reason, it'd be boredom. I don't really have friends outside of a select few that know about my, ah, hobby. It started innocently enough, a bauble or some piece of inconsequential jewelry while visiting another noble, but soon the rush from getting away with something proved too intoxicating to ignore. I began more elaborate and higher yielding heists, not for money, since between the fortunes from my mother's and father's families and the not so small one I've amassed thanks to my writing, I want for nothing, but for the rush, the pleasure of hearing your exploits becoming more and more well known. When you aren't the type to gossip or serve the greater good, that can be enough to keep you sane.

Your favorite past exploit/crime/?
The time I stole someone's entire library in one go. I'm not sure who it was, though I think they were a small-time merchant, but to be honest, I think I did them a favor. whoever it was had poor taste in literature.

Although, there was that one time I snuck into a target only to find that there was a secret gentlemen's meeting going on with lots of Calistrian ordained courtesans in attendance. Nudity was not optional and there was more than one time I thought I was going to be exposed. It's funny now, but not something I'd care to repeat.

How did you get caught and locked up in the Black Whale?
By using the bedroom for a set of twins that have a crush on my burglar persona as my entry point. They were awake and I didn't notice until they pounced on me. The commotion brought the guards, and their parents, who happened to be highly placed in one of the bigger merchant cartels.

After that, it was pretty much inevitable that I'd wind up here.

What is a crime you've always wanted to commit? It can be as vague as 'I've always wanted to seal art' to specific as “I've always wanted to steal Margrave Rienhold's opera gloves”. Give me a window into your character.
I've always wanted to rob the Gemstone Sisterhood of their dignity, but I guess that's not what you're asking about.

I'd love to steal a completed manuscript for an unpublished novel by one of the great authors here in Absolom, or even one from each of them. Not only do I get the rush, I'd get the chance to read the books first!

And list three other NPCs your character is connected to, either through love/hate/rivalry/contact/blood. Be creative with these for they will be my main tools at first.
Lalsa Arkant (Friend/Contact) Lalsa is one of the few people who knows the true identity of the popular young author Aela Zhan. In truth, she's the only one that knows that Aela, the reclusive heiress to the Maulsen and Ediel fortunes, Gwyndolin, and the mysterious thief that has become the ever more prominent topic of gossip recently, the Midnight Sparrow, are all the same person. Lalsa and Gwyndolin had grown up together, and when her father retired, Lalsa was the one that took over the management of Gwyn's fortunes. It's thanks to her that Gwyn has money left at all, much less the massive fortune that has only grown since Gwyn inherited it on her parents' death.

Lalsa is a careful, methodical person, in contrast to the often impulsive Gwyn. She doesn't really care that Gwyn's breaking the law, only that she do it in a way that won't get her caught and her secret busted. She's also the one that handles the publishing of Gwyn's manuscripts, and acts as her editor. Lalsa enjoys her work mostly, though she wishes Gwyn would settle down and not worry her so much.

Petros Wash (Contact) Petros is Gwyn's fence and her point of contact in the seedy underbelly of Absolom's criminal world. He has a mild crush on her and thinks himself a ladies' man, though he's far less smooth that he thinks. Working with a pretty, young woman is his dream come true, if only she would sleep with him. That isn't to say that his attention doesn't wander when other pretty women are around.

The Gemstone Sisterhood (Enemies) A group of debutantes that had, until Aela
Zhan became a best selling author, dominated the talk of any social gathering. All of them are skilled, formally trained, singers and musicians with their performances being the highlight of many social gatherings. Aela
's rise in popularity only ticked the divas off and it's become their personal mission to humiliate the young author and reclaim their status as the talk of the town.

Gwyndolin, though, doesn't have a clue who they are.

The members of the sisterhood are:
- Anna Amethyst
- Bella Beryl
- Dianna Diamond
- Emma Emerald
- Glynda Garnet
- Ophilia Opal
- Samantha Sapphire

The Scarlet Saboteur (Rival) Gwyn isn't sure how the rivalry got started, if a one sided game of one-upmanship can be called a rivalry, but she is sure that it's annoying. The Scarlet Saboteur is a loud, obnoxious rogue with a questionable fashion sense. Somehow, she manages to find the Midnight Sparrow every few weeks and challenges her to a duel, or some other contest to prove who's the best. Gwyn does her best to ignore the bratty teenager and leave before she draws a crowd that Gwyn would really rather avoid.

The Black Rose Earl (Unwanted Admirer) The Black Rose Earl is a self-styled gentleman thief that has been after the Midnight Sparrow's hand in marriage ever since they bumped into each other while on their way to different jobs. The fact that Gwyn has never once reciprocated those feelings hasn't stopped him from mentioning his plans at every opportunity.

Kroveld Blackflame (Unwanted Admirer) Kroveld is a young, handsome nobleman of very good standing that could have his pick of any girl in the entire city. He's chosen, however, to lavish his affections on the aloof Aela
Zhan. Where he differs from the Black Rose Earl is that while the Earl assumes that the Midnight Sparrow is madly in love with him, Kroveld recognizes that Aela isn't returning his feelings and makes grandiose, and frankly ridiculous, promises to change so that she'll love him, often missing the point that it's him she doesn't like.

Right now, I'm picturing Gwyn as a bookish person with a sense of humor and the unlucky propensity of attracting oddballs to her. She's calm in most cases, though she tends to get a case of twitchy eye around the last three people she was a connection with. She's a naturally shy person and only attend masquerade balls as Aela, which has increased their popularity among her fans since they know she'll accept invitations to them. As Gwyndolin Maulsen, she's a recluse that no one is sure is what she looks like, or even if she's real.

Okay, I think I'll go sorcerer.

Not that it makes the choice easier. I could still be the cunning heist planner if I go with the Sage bloodline.

GM, could I submit two versions of the character, one Cha-based, and the other Int-based (otherwise pretty much the same) and, depending on the other character, use whichever is needed (planner or face)?

does this remind anyone else of the 'Gentleman Bastards'?

GM Mowque would you consider two players applying as a team?

Whether the actual characters know each other before the imprisonment or not would depend on your preference. I think we could make it work either way.

What kind of posting rate are you looking for?

I hope this tides me over until Thorn of Emberlain. I do feel the last two wasted potential...

I don't really want people applying as a team because that limits who I can pick, since I'd hate to break up a team.

As for posting speed? I pride myself on replying very quickly. I'm not sure how a duo game will stack up to a solo game, but I'm willing to try.

Okay, I'll submit a Cha-based character.

Would you allow edits afterwards, though, should I be chosen, depending on my partner in crime?

Also, just to clarify; it would be the exact same character, just with a different key ability score. And maybe 1-2 words changed in the backstory (such as 'charming' to 'cunning' or somesuch)

Dotting hard. Tempted to make a Cipher Investigator. Just a plain looking person who blends into the background.

I'm very tempted by this, to go for an Infiltrator Investigator. Impersonates whatever individual she likes and forges papers or official documents with the Linguistics skill.

For the record: I am a huge fan of con artist movies and tv shows, and of the detective genre!

I am thinking a con man who prefers wits to violence, and in fact will avoid combat whenever possible. A man who trusts no one, and who likely shouldn't be trusted either.

Human Unchained Rogue 2 / Bard 2

Why you are a thief?

Silk didn’t choses to become a criminal. He was born in the streets of Absalom and raised by thugs, grifters, and thieves. His mother was a prostitute. And he never knew his father.

Lately, he has been working as a singer with the Street Performers and Actors' Guild…

Your favorite past exploit/crime?

The best grift is the simplest swindle. Silk stole a sizeable shipment of fine wines simply by giving the Ogrekin movers a false delivery destination. They transported the cases to the wrong warehouse, and when the subterfuge was discovered, it was too late: the warehouse was empty.

Ptarnex Dexarion suspects that Silk was involved in the robbery, but could never prove it.

How did you get caught and locked up in the Black Whale?

It is no accident that Silk found himself in the Black Whale. Inside, there is a prisoner — a priest of Norgorber — with whom Silk needs to speak. The man has secrets that are vital to Silk’s next big job…

What is a crime you've always wanted to commit?

Having grown up in Absalom and preyed on the rich, Silk has always seen the Vault of Abadar has the ultimate target. Robbing it would be his greatest achievement.

List three other NPCs your character is connected to (love/hate/rivalry/contact/blood):

Silk has carefully nurtured his relationship with the Street Performers and Actors' Guild, which is led by Nomarch Alain Always. He spies on them for Jostlin Ferqyr. He hopes to win her favour in order to gain entry into the Vault of Abadar. This is a long con, obviously. But Silk is a patient man.

Silk has friends in Diobel, among the people loyal to Scion Lord Avid of House Arnsen. These friends help him to smuggle goods in and out of the city, without any undue attention. Obviously, this means that the enemies of Lord Avid are to some extent, his enemies…

Having grown up in the docks, the patrons of the Grog Pit tavern are like family. This is perhaps the only place where he feels at home.

As stated above, he is distrusted by Ptarnex Dexarion, the owner of Ogrekin.

I will allow some minor edits, yes.

Questions:

Why you are a thief?
"Who? Me? How dare ya assume… yeah, I'm a thief. No point in denying it now, I suppose. Personally, I'm just a huge believer in redistribution of wealth. I mean, so many people have millions of gold, I think it's fair that I get some of that, too, ya know? It's my job. I stimulate the economy. All that money isn't doing them any good just sitting in their vaults, so I take it upon myself to keep things flowing. What do ya mean the smaller targets? Oh, the 'not super rich' folks? Well, a guy's gotta eat, don't e? And is it really thieving? I tell 'em I'll heal them, and I do! Oh, wait… you're referring to the jewelry, arn'cha? Well, to that I say, if you're not rich, why are ya buying my jewels in the first place? Eh? Oh, sure, I'll pass off the odd silver coin as platinum, pick a few pockets, but really, it's their own darn fault for believing me! I'm no less a criminal than the adventurers I took it from!
"You're also asking how I became a thief? Well, let me tell ya a story. You see, when I was a young lad, I lived on the streets. Not sure who my parents are, but that's not really the point. Anyhow, I lived in Ascendant. I made a tidy sum, ya know? Talk a gullible mark into helping me, lift their purse, and send them on their way. One day, though, my magic came into focus. Caught the eye of a Hopeful. He said that I might be able to help him out. We talked our way into everyone thinking he was successful, that he was a god, but that he simply elected to stay on Golarion instead a' him ascending inta the heavens. I did, and still do, a killer false priest, and we made a tidy sum. I helped heal folks, they paid us, it all worked out. Anyhoo, we got busted one day, so I left and started under a new name. Good times.
Your favorite past exploit/crime?
"Ah, now that's tricky…. Hmm… I gotta say, it's the same as how I got locked in here. So, how it goes is…
How did you get caught and locked up in the Black Whale?
"So, ya know how the Pathfinder Society is based outta Absalom, right? 'Course you do, everyone knows that. Anyhow, there's always a ton of treasure flowing in and out of the place. Lots of adventurers. So, what I do is I meet an incoming group outside the walls. I disguise myself as their senior officer, and say that 'This artifact is too sensitive to be brought into the city like this. I've arranged for a decoy to be taken in. You take this, I'll teleport to the headquarters. Be wary of the Apsis, they've laid an ambush for you.' Had ta try a few times, didn't get it quite right at first. Eventually, though, I talked a group into handing over their prize, and what a prize it was! A beautiful sword, made from polished glass, throbbing with arcane power. She would be worth a fortune, ya know? So, I managed to bamboozle them into takin' a plain sword as the decoy, while I 'teleported' away. That scroll was pricy, but it was worth it.
That being said, I was busted within a week. I wanted to teleport to Nex or summat, but I couldn't find a caster willing to ferry me or a scroll that could take me someplace I've never been (never left the island, ya know?). So, it took them three days afore their divinations tracked down the sword, and I spent the next three days dodgin' Pathfinders, Apsis, the city guard alike 'afore they caught me. Led 'em on a merry dance, too. Good times. They eventually got me, though. Never told me what the sword was, but I know whenever I looked for magic on it, it nearly knocked me out from sheer power. Personally, I think this is something of an excellent opportunity. Ya know how much street cred I'd get as the first to ever escape the Black Whale? I've broken out of prisons before, but this should be fun.
What is a crime you've always wanted to commit?
"Oh, like, my wildest dream? Well, that would be a massive one. My biggest dream would be to bamboozle the entire city into thinking that they needed to pay a measly 1% of their wealth in tax to... whoever, really. Mebbe an invading army? A vengeful recently-ascended god? Then, depending on who they paid to, rob 'em blind. Imagine… 1% of the entire city's wealth. That would be enough to keep me alive for centuries, and livin' in comfort the entire time. 'Speccially if I can pull it off a few times, or bump it up even higher. But 1%? That's more attainable, ya know? Gotta start small.
Oh, I suppose if I could successfully rob the Pathfinders (and not get caught), that would be cool, too. They gotta have priceless relics locked up in that there vault, ya know?
List three other NPCs your character is connected to:
"Wha? No way I'm gonna rat on my friends. You're not getting them, too."

Kael Drumaz, god of change: Human wizard.
Kael was a con man, posing as a Hopeful for the test of the Starstone, and was the one mentioned to take Herejio under his wing, posing as a living god. He's a powerful transmuter, and helped Herejio pose as many priests of his, faking divine magic skillfully. Herejio also helped with the illusion that Kael could restore youth, serving as a plant in crowds, then using his shapeshifting powers to change his apparent age. Eventually, Kael was arrested for bribery, and Herejio is unaware of his current fate.

Shaira the Silken; halfling rogue
Shaira is Herejio's fence, ensuring that he always gets the value of his goods in cash. She refused to take the stolen Pathfinder sword, though, as she's smart enough to know it would be impossible to hide. Herejio grew up with her, and she was another one of Kael's 'priests,' largely used for fleecing the crowds. The two have a love/hate relationship, seeing each other as rivals, somehow, despite not really directly competing for anything.

Sarajaoi; kitsune investigator
Sarajaoi is Herejio's sister. A seemingly law-abiding detective, she played a major role in his capture and subsequent imprisonment. She also played a major role in toppling Kael's false religion, after the false god unsuccessfully tried to recruit her to his cause. That was when their 'split' happened, and so far as anyone knows, the two are huge rivals, actively working to undermine each other and humiliate/bring to justice each other. However, it's nothing more than a scam. Every once in a while, they'll stage an escapade, which helps boost both of their reputations. She also sometimes serves as an informant for Herejio, telling him of promising marks. In return, Herejio poses as random criminals, which allows for her to 'bring in' lots of criminals. He always escapes prison eventually, though she's worried that he might have fallen in a bit too deep this time. She's never told anyone of her brother, so theoretically nobody knows he's anything but the human boy he's currently masquerading as.

Obviously, details of background to be discussed if and when. But given the build, I figure that Silk would have been involved with the Street Performers and Actors' Guild since childhood... Perhaps he is feeding information to the enemies of the guild, with the guild's approval? Perhaps he's a triple agent?!

In the meantime, here's a tentative build!

POWERS & ABILITIES:
Disappearing Act (Su): A street performer can use performance to divert attention from an ally. All creatures within 30 feet that fail a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the bard's level + the bard's Cha modifier) treat one creature chosen by the bard as if it were invisible. This performance affects one additional creature at 5th level and every 6 levels thereafter. If the targets take any action that would cause them to become visible, they become visible to everyone. The bard cannot use this ability on himself. This ability is a mind-affecting effect that requires visual components. This performance replaces inspire courage.

Gladhanding: A street performer earns double the normal amount of money from Perform checks. As a standard action, he may use a Bluff check in place of a Diplomacy check to improve a creature's attitude for 1 minute, after which its attitude becomes one step worse than originally. This ability replaces countersong.

Streetwise: A street performer gains a bonus equal to half his level on Bluff, Disguise, Knowledge (local), and Sleight of Hand checks, Diplomacy or Intimidate checks made to influence crowds, and Diplomacy checks to gather information (minimum +1). This replaces bardic knowledge.

Bardic Performance: A bard is trained to use the Perform skill to create magical effects on those around him, including himself if desired. He can use this ability for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + his Charisma modifier. At each level after 1st a bard can use bardic performance for 2 additional rounds per day. Each round, the bard can produce any one of the types of bardic performance that he has mastered, as indicated by his level.

Distraction (Su): At 1st level, a bard can use his performance to counter magic effects that depend on sight. Each round of the distraction, he makes a Perform (act, comedy, dance, or oratory) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by an illusion (pattern) or illusion (figment) magical attack may use the bard's Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform skill check proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the distraction is already under the effect of a noninstantaneous illusion (pattern) or illusion (figment) magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it sees the distraction, but it must use the bard's Perform skill check result for the save. Distraction does not work on effects that don't allow saves. Distraction relies on visual components.

Fascinate (Su): At 1st level, a bard can use his performance to cause one or more creatures to become fascinated with him. Each creature to be fascinated must be within 90 feet, able to see and hear the bard, and capable of paying attention to him. The bard must also be able to see the creatures affected. The distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents this ability from working. For every three levels the bard has attained beyond 1st, he can target one additional creature with this ability.

Versatile Performance (Ex): Sing (Bluff, Sense Motive): At 2nd level, a bard can choose one type of Perform skill. He can use his bonus in that skill in place of his bonus in associated skills. When substituting in this way, the bard uses his total Perform skill bonus, including class skill bonus, in place of its associated skill's bonus, whether or not he has ranks in that skill or if it is a class skill. At 6th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the bard can select an additional type of Perform to substitute.

Well-Versed (Ex): At 2nd level, the bard becomes resistant to the bardic performance of others, and to sonic effects in general. The bard gains a +4 bonus on saving throws made against bardic performance, sonic, and language-dependent effects.

Sneak Attack: If a rogue can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage.
The rogue's attack deals extra damage anytime her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the rogue flanks her target. This extra damage is 1d6 at 1st level, and increases by 1d6 every 2 rogue levels thereafter. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet. This additional damage is precision damage and is not multiplied on a critical hit.
With a weapon that deals nonlethal damage (such as a sap, unarmed strike, or whip), a rogue can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. She cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack—not even with the usual –4 penalty.

Follow Up (Ex): An investigator can roll twice on any Diplomacy check made to gather information, and receives the information for both results. This takes the same amount of time as one check. If the lesser of the two checks reveals false information, the rogue is aware of it. False information is not revealed in this way if the people she questioned do not know it to be false. This ability replaces trapfinding.

Finesse Training (Ex): At 1st level, a rogue gains Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat. In addition, starting at 3rd level, she can select any one type of weapon that can be used with Weapon Finesse (such as rapiers or daggers). Once this choice is made, it cannot be changed. Whenever she makes a successful melee attack with the selected weapon, she adds her Dexterity modifier instead of her Strength modifier to the damage roll. If any effect would prevent the rogue from adding her Strength modifier to the damage roll, she does not add her Dexterity modifier. The rogue can select a second weapon at 11th level and a third at 19th level.

Evasion (Ex): At 2nd level, a rogue can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If she succeeds at a Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the rogue is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless rogue does not gain the benefit of evasion.

Rogue talent: Coax Information (Ex): A rogue with this talent can use Bluff or Diplomacy in place of Intimidate to force an opponent to act friendly toward her. When the duration of the attitude shift ends, that opponents' attitude toward the rogue returns to its previous level, rather than dropping one level.

Yes, he is meant to be a master liar. The con man to beat all con men.

I'm supprised no one has gone for a spiritualist stealth focused character.

I had actually considered both Spiritualist and arcanist.

It's going to be tricky to have a heist team with only two people, that's for sure. I mean, just think of Ocean's 11. 11 people, each with their own specialty, that all need to work together to pull off a big heist. So, sure, we might have a stealthy person and a face. Or the brains and the infiltrator. But how you'd manage to be a team when you need someone to pick the locks, another to sneak inside, a third to keep the guards distracted, and a fourth to come up with the plan in the first place? But only have two people?

Sovereign Court

Well, I think that was kind of the point of the social aspects of the characters, right? Make contacts. Maybe pay off a guard or two. Build a team with some specialized npcs. Stuff like that.

Perfect archetype for a thieving spiritualist. Shadow caller

Think I forgot to mention that my character sheet is all set.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Her Crunch isn't completely finished but it's mostly just the shadow that needs stating.

Why you are a thief:
"That's a bit of a doozy of a question now isn't it? Well, I suppose I wouldn't call myself a thief at all, I would call myself a liberator. I take things that people don't deserve, need or are to selfish to part with willingly to help the people that need it.

Oh my that sounded a little preachy didn't it? Sorry, lets move on to the next question."

Your favorite past exploit/crime/?:
"Well that's as easy as asking me how many fingers I have. It was my first crime." Marina sneer's and puts up some air quotes ""Crime." Heh, but yeah, I escaped with some of my family and friends from Cheliax. It was probably the hardest one to date to, didn't have my little buddy helping me out." Marina holds up her hand to her side and after a moment a inky black arm shoots out of her shadow and slaps her outstretched hand.

How did you get caught and locked up in the Black Whale?:
"Carelessness mostly, I was looking into a passing convoy carrying some trade goods, "trade goods" to Cheliax. I suppose you could say I tried to bite off more than I could chew getting them out by myself. Should have just waited a little bit longer, might have gotten a better opportunity."

What is a crime you've always wanted to commit?:
"Well, the family I used to work for is one of the cruelest most slave extensive family's in Cheliax. I want to bring them down, I want to make it to where they cant afford to own one more person, I want them to be NOTHING when I'm done with them."

List three people your connected to, either through love, hate, rivalry, contact, blood:
"Let's see, lately the Bellflower network and I have been interacting a bit, they're the ones who got me the lead that got me thrown in the Black whale.

There's a little Pub in the puddles called The Soggy Pipper, the owner there gives me odd jobs sometimes. It's often really strange stuff, but it pays well for the kind of work it is and he seems to know something about every place in the city, I don't know how he gets all that money though.

Lastly there's another bar that I frequent, not for work, but for actual fun, there's a group of mercenary's there that for some reason took me in as there mascot. I tried to tell them that I'm not a very glib halfling but they where having none of it. I think they'd help me if I asked them, they seem pretty loose."
