It's going to be tricky to have a heist team with only two people, that's for sure. I mean, just think of Ocean's 11. 11 people, each with their own specialty, that all need to work together to pull off a big heist. So, sure, we might have a stealthy person and a face. Or the brains and the infiltrator. But how you'd manage to be a team when you need someone to pick the locks, another to sneak inside, a third to keep the guards distracted, and a fourth to come up with the plan in the first place? But only have two people?

The poster below you describes it. You'll have to find NPCs to fill some roles, if you think you need them. So a nice social challenge as well.

Wonder when we'd see the good thief guy show up.

Allrighty, I think I'm finished building her. I made her able to cover most bases other than social situations on her own, though obviously her forte is infiltration. She isn't a fighter though and the shadow is sort of a mini-me situation, so I imagine some muscle would be the go to for a partner.

The shadow I'd like to think of as a character in her own right. Though since she is so heavily bound to Marina and I assume cant speak, just like a normal shadow cant, so most of her RP is going to be manipulating Marina's shadow to make a point in a situation. shadow puppet style.

Okay, but how about planners? Would we just present a plan and say that one of our high-Int allies came up with it?

I just assumed that after we gather enough information we're supposed to come up with our own plan. You know, stake out the guards to figure out they're scheduled, find out where they keep the keys and then figure out how much security we have to get past in order to get the mark.

I would hope that professional thieves could do at least that much even if they aren't very intelligent, I mean, its our profession.

It was a specialty opera house, it played opera based on the afterlife and all the wonderful and terrible places beyond this mortal coil. I was one of the main supporting dancers. i even once or twice got to play the part of hero or villain due to my agility with stage weapons.

I started to get cocky when noblewomen took an interest in me. it was 3 decades into my career there and once i had a taste i couldn't get enough. this went on for 7 years and my escapades got wilder and wilder. some women wanted me to sneak into their homes without letting their husbands know. It was one of these - a nobleman's daughter - that got me in here. she got 2 minutes away from her chapperone and gave me a map to her mansion and room and a few keys. I made my way into the mansion and got to her room. That was when the maid found us and went off to get a guard. She ushered me to the window, but i can't climb and i couldn't make the jump. the guards caught me and the father trumped up a thievery charge and threw me in here. Its been 5 years

Wouldn't be fair to the others, would it? Just use the standard one for your application.

Hey, GM. I am almost finished with my build, but I have few questions.

1. Can I use the "Bound to Golarion" alternate trait? It's not that big of a deal, but I would have to tweak my flavor a depending on your answer.

2. If I am feeling particularly inspired, can I post more than three NPC associates?

not for me, for the whole campaign. I'll make a separate thread and link it for you. I'll link it everywhere, but I will make my submission with the paizo one

This looks like it's gonna be fun. I think I want to toss my hat into the ring. I think that a vigilante would be easy to do it with, but why would we do things the easy way? Would you let me take the Card Sharp and Papercraft Tools rogue talents on an Unchained Rogue so I could make a Harrow thief? RAW you're not allowed to use those talents on an Unchained Rogue.

That sounds fine to me. Papercraft is always a neat little thing but I'll be honest and say I never really cared for the Harrow stuff. I'm ready to be impressed though.

Kinda weird right? Might be smart to take a level eventually though. Dual identity could be really valuable for people like our characters.

Chapel Ty'El wrote:

This is actually the way I'm leaning now. The investigator archetype that I was looking at looks cool, but it seems like it would be difficult to make a character that does much more than "be stealthy". Granted, very stealthy, but one trick ponies get boring quick.

I really like this concept, sounds like fun! I am working up a halfling overwhelming soul telekineticist for it, with a focus on rogue-like skills. I had a question - would you allow the use of a campaign trait? Specifically, I'm looking at Trap Finder from Mummy's Mask. It grants the ability to disable magical traps, which is something I'd like to be able to do. Currently picking up disable device as a class skill via Vagabond Child, but would love to swap it out if possible.

concerning my alternate progression: linky

and for comparison

to note the bonuses are exactly the same at level 4 and i didn't bother with any split bonuses for simplicity's sake

will finish backstory and collate character tomorrow. I also have some niggles for my character i would like to ask gm leniency/helpfullness on namely trading darkvision for a feat, a third party feat, and negotiating away my bardic verbal components as this is a stealth character with a dancing bardic archetype in a thievery campaign. this should be my most egregious minmaxing for the character

I think that's a bit of a quick progression. I mean, I would even say its better than WBL. I think we should just stick with standard ABP.

There was never any danger of me changing it for this game.

Not to mention that's a pretty powerful feat for basically no cost.

I was never expecting to get that. Maybe a +2 caster level. and the crunch is all ready to go for a blanket no from gm

darkvision traded for extra feat

no mandatory verbal components, because of my archetype, character theme, and campaign theme. willing to go the extra mile for this

Darkvision is not the same value as a feat. Feats are very powerful in Pathfinder.

As for changing spell casting, no. That is a really fundamental part of the system. Sorry.

i just can't leave it alone don't judge me:

I was only asking for the darkvision thing because i would've gotten it from shadowdancer anyway and i can live with no for an answer. but g+&#@$ are you underestimating darkvision. it's a whole sensory suite that most life on golarion lacks. its hard to overstate how badly a human martial is screwed by anything with access to a second level darkness spell and darkvision. it literally changes the game. very many dungeons take place in dark places populated exclusively by things with darkvision. I don't make a character without it. it gives access to really interesting feat lines. i believe the only reason you underestimate it is because it's so common. I dare any self-respecting min-maxer to disagree that darkvision is more powerfull than any feat that doesn't require darkvision(or any other uncommon sense), or have less than 2 prerequisites

for the spellcasting you misunderstand. there is a line in bardic spellcasting that says all bardic spells have verbal components, which implies that there are some on the list that don't normally

Hey GM, would you be willing to consider allowing Variant Multi-Classing? As it stands, I was in the process of rolling up a Warlock Vigilante, and I feel that the Magus VMC could be a decent choice.

Normally I'd say yes but I have had so many multi-class people apply, it seems unfair to change the assumptions now.

Hi Mowque!

The Chess here with my character - I'm sorry I took so long. Allyo is a vigilante, as I mentioned before :) He's an obscure artist during the day, and a quickhanded thief/unlikely hero by night.

All info should be in the profile, but please feel free to let me know if I have to adjust something.

Cheers

Why you are a thief?
Because I can. Because just the majority of my marks don’t deserve to own whatever it is I take away from them. I don’t mean that I have altruistic motives, I just mean I’m better than you. Life is a game, and the fact that I’m always two steps ahead of my competition means I earn what I take. What’s that saying…to the winner go the spoils? Well that’s me. The winner. Always. Ordinary people are just so adorable to watch, that law enforcement that dance through my hoops, thinking they are close but in truth, they are only so close because I allow them the illusion of a chance. Sadly I haven’t encountered anyone to challenge me intellectually in a very long time. Still, maybe that might be about to change.

Your favorite past exploit/crime/?
Once, I infiltrated the Azlanti Keep and stole the guard roster for the week. It wasn’t a particularly significant exploit, but the fact that I was able to walk into the Keep, the home base of the organization hell-bent to shut me down, completely unobserved, was a tremendous confidence boost. Of course, it helped that I was impersonating a guard at the time, but hey that’s a pretty simple thing for someone of my talents. One of my favorite exploits was convincing a noble that he lawfully had to give me the items from his house that I wanted. I had to do some high level forgery to fake documents that I was tax collecting on behalf of the government but the rest was just bluffing my way through the exchange. The fool actually had his servants help load my transport and I just walked away, free as a bird. Apparently some people really are born yesterday.

How did you get caught and locked up in the Black Whale?
Those silly guards thought they had me all locked down. Sure, they penetrated my organization a little more easily than I expected, and some members of my old friends were a little more susceptible to betrayal than I had initially planned for, but no matter, I had planned for the eventuality. In truth, I had expected this, planned for this, and I wanted someone intelligent at my side, someone trustworthy, someone my equal, and I knew the Black Whale would have just the person inside it. So I decided to be a little obvious, I walked into the oh so obvious trap the guards had set up for me and pretended to be surprised as anyone. How that impressed their little ego’s, thinking they had locked up the master criminal, but my plans are just beginning. This little tub will not hold me before long and soon, with a trusted operative by my side, I’ll unleash a crime wave unlike Absalom has ever seen.

What is a crime you've always wanted to commit? It can be as vague as 'I've always wanted to seal art' to specific as “I've always wanted to steal Margrave Rienhold's opera gloves”. Give me a window into your character.

I want to enter Lord Gyr's private quarters. Oh the fun I could have. The documents I could forge, the items of state I could steal. The recognition I could get from such a daring crime...oh, its one of my best fantasies.

That said, I'm a practical girl with practical goals, and my next target is clear. I'm robbing Dyrianna of House Avenstar for her religious relics. Risky, taking on a Calistrian with a penchant for revenge, but its unavoidable, she has something I require to draw my enemies out into the open and besides, way I figure, if I'm tricky enough, maybe she will be so impressed she calls it even. That's what your average Calistrian appreciates right, trickery? I'm pretty sure we can do the bygones be bygones thing, or at least, that's what I'm hoping for anyway.

And list three other NPCs your character is connected to, either through love/hate/rivalry/contact/blood. Be creative with these for they will be my main tools at first.

Amanda Tanner (Friend(?)): Amanda was the target of the Wasp Queens for allegedly foiling a prior mission, before Nyx joined the group. Nyx, disapproving of a revenge 'hit' taking priority instead of the heist the group was originally planning on, secretly intervened to protect her, a fact Amanda is unaware of. Amanda is very smart and capable, but lost her job at the bank, after the successful heist Nyx carried out with the Wasp Queens. Ironically, she is now hunting the persons responsible, which puts her directly against Nyx who is in the awkward situation of having made things worse by protecting her. Nyx tends to keep a very close eye on Amanda, and is uncharacteristically protective, but usually assists from affair.

Wasp Queens (Enemies): Nyx's old crowd that she used to run with. The planned attack on Amanda shook Nyx's faith in the organisation (that and the fact she wanted to stay in Absalom and the group is usually pretty mobile) and they parted on "good" terms, Nyx knows that they will return. Led by Arala Insifaal Nyx knows them to be utterly ruthless and plan long term like herself - its partly this threat that led to Nyx to make the decision to allow herself to be caught, to draw them back into the city and root them out.

Tyler Rex (enemy): Tyler is the insufferable investigator that has made it his business to hunt down Nyx. Nyx dislikes him, (although secretly has to admire his persistence) because he tends to "go far" and Nyx suspects that on more than one occasion, he threatened to threaten the loved ones of members in her old Absalom organisation (before it fell apart after her capture) in order to gain intel. Nyx considers this a breach of the gentlemens agreement between hunter and quarry but hasn't considered him a minor threat. With the Wasp Queens threatening to move into town though, Tyler is an irritant that Nyx can no longer afford, trying to stay two steps ahead of multiple enemies is rapidly draining her willpower.

Also I was bored and wanted to do the whole Wasp Queen Betrayal Scene so here's a short story I just casually wrote in my spare time. Its not a literary masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it provides a window into how she acts, reacts, handles situations etc.

The Betrayal:

Nyx stepped out of the safe house and into the chill air. It was approaching evening, and the close of the business day, so she moved quickly towards the bank, wanting to time things perfectly. As usual, Nyx was relatively calm about the mission, but today she had to fight to keep the frustration under control. She was furious that her fellow thieves had elected to eliminate Amanda, someone who hadn't really done anything so far. At worst she was a minor roadblock that didn't need elimination but she had been overruled. She needed some air, and so here she was, on a scouting mission again to pass the time and clear her head.

Nyx quickened her pace, checking giving herself a quick once over as she walked. She wasn’t impersonating someone today, just a standard disguise, tall, reasonably well off, business-like female. The approach was always the trickiest part, she reflected to herself, as she intently observed the bank, her dark eyes missing nothing. The Wasp Queen’s had wanted to know what sort of security was around the bank, which made approaching the bank around closing time the perfect opportunity to spot what changes happened.

Sweeping through the doors without incident, Nyx noted no less than four visible guards on the ground floor, and while she could not locate any of the invisible watchers, she knew they were there, and attempted to predict the location they might be by spotting what area’s the visible guards were covering and the area's that they were not. Smiling politely, Nyx approached the bank manager, a short man with a cute smile. They did introductions, and as usual, Nyx pretend that the man's name was a surprise to her. She had checked him out days ago, and knew that his marriage was on the rocks, that he loved his children dearly, and who his wife was cheating on him with. Nyx had long ago learnt the value of information and the advantages that it could bring.

Pretending to be charmed by his good service, Nyx kindly informed him that she wished to open an account, purely a medium sized safety deposit box that she could regularly have access to. Delighted to pull in a new client, the paperwork was swiftly completed and the man ushered her into into a private room with a elegant desk and chair, where the client could have the privacy to store whatever items he or she wished.

Seating herself in the chair, Nyx worked swiftly, but carefully. It was her fifth reconnaissance mission overall, and she was really just putting the finishing touches on her plan before the day of the heist. After making several notes and diagrams on a quick sketchpad, Nyx stuffs the paper into her pocket, and starts on a new page. One page becomes several as she quietly compiles all the information she has on the Wasp Queens, prior crimes and how they were carried out, strengths, weaknesses, physical statistics, known disguises, the works. Someone might have thought it odd to store a valuable document into a bank you planned to rob the very next day, but Nyx knew that the safe deposit boxes would not be a priority target – the main vault was. Besides, after the heist, assuming it went successfully, the bank would as a matter of course, upgrade its security, which would make it even safer than it was before. Nor would the Wasp Queens expect the documents to be located in a place they planned to rob, besides, Nyx had to keep her insurance policy somewhere and it sure as hell wasn’t going to tie it up as a scroll around her neck.

A small bell rung, signalling to the banks customer's that the bank was closing shortly, but Nyx had almost finished by then anyway. Putting the finishing touches on the file, Nyx placed it into her deposit box, and immediately signed up for an ongoing payment. Leaving the bank, she didn’t immediately turn back to her safe house, but instead followed the street deeper into the city, looking for her target.

The man’s name was Julian Savae, and Nyx knew him to be a corrupt jerk. A businessman with deep connections to law enforcement, the man liked to drink hard after a large business deal, and then go home with a prostitute. Rich, rude, and selfish, Nyx had him marked down as possible blackmail material but right now, she had something different in mind.

Nyx headed into the bar, and spotted Julian. Unfortunately, Nyx couldn’t see anyone in a good position to help her out, so with a giggle, she located a slightly tipsy patron, took his hands in hers and they danced and swayed in the music. Faking enjoyment in the dance, Nyx was able to steer the man into position before giving him an apologetic glance, and a ‘wait one’ gesture, sweetening the idea by handing him a drink from the bar as she quickly disappeared into the crowd.

Time was growing short, so Nyx headed straight up towards the room she had booked earlier that week inside the bar, which fortunately had rooms available for guests. The room hadn’t been booked for the specific purpose she had in mind now, but Nyx had been prepared for all eventualities in planning tomorrow’s heist, blackmailing Julian had just been one possible avenue that hadn’t been required. Ignoring her own room, Nyx leaned hard against the door to the adjacent room, and carefully used her tools to unlock the door. The room was empty – of course it was, she had booked both rooms separately under different names. Crossing to the window, she made sure it was wide open, before turning, and drinking her disguise self-extract, taking her desired form, changing shape from a woman to a man. Switching her clothing into something more masculine, Nyx closed the door behind her, and headed back down into the bar. Buying a drink, she turned towards Julian, making her way around past his sight line, waving through the crowd, pleased to notice that the man she had briefly danced with was still in position, craning his neck to see where his ‘date’ had gone.
Stepping up behind Julian, Nyx hoped she wouldn’t have to listen to one of his business stories for long, but luckily, she was spared having to eavesdrop on a tiresome exchange when Julian’s drunken swaying meant that he had to take a step backwards – right into Nyx. Allowing her drink to spill, Nyx gave a (fake) cry of anger at the loss of whatever swill the bar was serving, immediately retaliating with a swift jab into the mans gut causing him to collapse, wheezing, against a pillar. “Useless idiot”, Nyx cursed him, upending the remainder of her drink over his head. Still swaying, and high on alcohol, Julian rocked back on his heels and swung a fist of his own, a blow Nyx could have easily sidestepped if not for her plan of standing exactly where she was. Instead, she vertically crossed her arms in front of her face, side to side, taking the punch easily without effect. Without missing much of a beat, Nyx launches a counterattack as she punishes Julian’s retaliation with a crisp hit to the nose. Immediate pain, blood, and disorientation strikes Julian, as he reels backwards again, raising his arms defensively as he backs away. 'Two hits, three seconds' Nyx reflects to herself, wondering how she got so slow. Perhaps she needed to be doing more of the physical work than the planning preparations.

One of Julian’s hangers on fancies getting into his friends favor, and swings a meaty fist in Nyx’s direction, hoping to catch her off guard. Nyx however, had been waiting for it, counting on it. She’s already moving away as the fist whistles past her and strikes the man behind her, where he had still been waiting for Nyx to return and resume the dance. Stumbling backwards, he knocks someone else over, and the bar fight is well and truly on. Her work done, and exit strategy in progress, Nyx heads straight for the bar’s guest rooms, the bar fight hampering her assailants attempts to chase. The attacker backed off slightly, the guest rooms are down a closed corridor, and he feels satisfied that Nyx has nowhere to go.

Dodging the chaos, Nyx makes it to her room without further incident, knowing that her assailant wouldn’t know which room she went into, but would doubtless check. She drinks her extract, changing form again, back into the form of the female that first walked into the bar, as she mutters the magic command word to shift her clothing again. Fumbling slightly, she pulls the dress half off so that she looks in a slight state of undress, just as the man comes charging in.
“OUT” Nyx screams, acting every bit how a typical female responds to a strange man suddenly crashing into her room.
“I…ugh” the man stammers, struggling to articulate himself, so Nyx helps the conversation meet its natural conclusion by taking a stiletto off her heel and hurling the missile at the man’s head, causing him to duck involuntarily as the shoe crashes against the wall.
“OUT" Nyx yells again, and that seems to do the trick as the man leaves, closing the door and opening the next one further down. Nyx hears a curse as he spots the open window, clearly assuming his target has vaulted out and making a getaway. Listening patiently, Nyx hears him rush back down the stairs before she calmly collects her shoe and fixes her attire. When the barfight appears to be dying down, and the sounds of the bouncers moving in, Nyx slips out of her room and heads back out in the direction of fresh night air.

***

Julian winced as he pressed the cloth against his nose again, the bleeding was slowing down, but the humiliation still lingered, He wasn’t the kind of guy that gets into a bar fight, no, he was the guy you respected and let alone. Whoever that thug was, he needed to be taught a lesson and Julian was happy to assist. Lost in the moment of happy visualizing a revenge fantasy, he is suddenly dragged out of it as an attractive woman; wobbling on heels and clearly drunk, brushes against him for support, before giving a light hearted giggle and stumbling off. Julian watches her go for a moment, before mentally dragging himself to the here and now. Sighing, he rummages around for his purse, but comes up empty. Puzzled, he searches his pockets again, and comes up with a small rectangular piece of white cardboard. Squinting slightly, he is able to make up the handwriting.

‘I took your purse as recompense for you choosing to spill my drink like that. It’s not as if you would miss it with the amount of money you must have lying around, maybe you can use some of it to fix your nose? If you don’t like the idea of me with that purse of yours, feel free to take it back, however judging from today’s sorry affair, it doesn’t appear that I have anything to be afraid of.’

Grimacing, Julian flips the card over, and sees that the small handwritten message is printed on the back of a business card. An elementary mistake. The address is old, not even of this city, but the name is likely to still be correct, a Mr John Tanner. Julian almost screws the card up in a fist, before smiling to himself, signalling one of his drinking buddies to step forward. “Sandor, can I ask you for a favour…”

***

Nyx smirks to herself as she jiggles the purse in a free hand. A successful mission all around. Julian would call in his police buddies, and they would drag John Tanner in for questioning in a couple of hours, or first thing in the morning. Nothing would stand up of course, he wouldn’t have the missing purse on him, the business card was a fake (the business printed on it being entirely fictional with just the name being real) and his wife would alibi him out, as well as the several other witnesses at the birthday party he was attending. Julian would just look like yet another corrupt businessman throwing his weight around and John would get off scot free…and his wife would be at the station instead of taking her usual route to work, meaning the strike ambush planned for her by the Wasp Queens wouldn’t take place and the mission could proceed with the bank heist regardless. All in all, another win, and Nyx couldn’t be happier.
Making her way back to the safe house, Nyx is careful to keep her attitude more reserved as she knocks, before entering, glancing at her Wasp Queen sisters glancing at her re-entrance. There was a tension in the area that Nyx immediately picked up on, but she didn’t let it rattle her as she casually tossed the purse onto the table, making the coins inside jangle for a moment.

“Slim pickings out there” she remarks casually as she rummages around and pulls out the sheef of papers she had been working on at the bank, showing the diagrams of likely movements, guards, watchers or defenders at the bank, handing it to Arala Insifaal, head of the guild.

There is a long silence as Arala observes, as leader she had final say on whether the mission would go ahead tomorrow, and much of that depended on the hours of reconnaissance Nyx had carried out at the bank over the past week. “I do hope this plan of yours works Nyx…after all, it’s an awful lot of trust we are putting into this plan of yours, especially after our recent...disagreement”

So they had discussed it after all, Nyx reflected, not entirely surprised that the subject had come up while she had been gone. The emphasis was not lost, Arala wanted to make sure Nyx was back on board. It was also not altogether lost on Nyx that every Wasp Queen in the room had a weapon within easy reach.
Nyx gazes back into Arala’s dark eyes confidently. Once upon a time, those eyes scared her, but now she can meet that gaze head on without even blinking. Oh, how far she had come. “You needn’t worry sister” she remarks, before tilting her head to one side and showing a slight smile that could have meant anything. “I’ve thought of everything.”

Can't wait till the 11th. Just curious to see the pair that gets picked almost more than anything...

Waiting is always the hard part!

I am curious as well...

I've been checking the thread multiple times a day to see if anyone had posted anymore.

I've seen some really good submissions for this one. Or maybe it's because the idea is different than what usually comes up so different characters can be thrown in.

I'm not a huge fan of the weirder races. That being said, Iftit Bard (Dervish Dancer) is intriguing. Especially if we're to play up the ancestry. Research into Osirion and maybe efreet and style the character after that fashion.

You swapped out for Brazen flame and Fire starter. Honestly, I think the fire resistance and SLA are more useful than +1 fire damage. And giving up Fire Affinity for something else only makes sense but, I would take Hypnotic instead. Bards have a few decent spells that it would help.

I'm never going to tell someone to pick crunch over flavor though. These are just my recommendations.

Now, as far as the character itself goes, I think you need to expound upon things a bit more.

why I'm a thief
I'm not a thief. I'm a pretty boy circus performer.

But why? And how is this going to tie into heist jobs?

stuff

Iftits aren't really any weirder than tieflings, all six native outsiders pretty much have the same origin. as for the racial traits, I disagree

as to the fluff, hes a mildly unstable philanderer and devotee to Calistria. not everyone has to be complicated. he was probably kicked out of his hometown but that's not important to the character so i didn't put it in.

for the not a thief thing, you sir lose a cookie. he's a medieval carnie with ranks in sleight of hand. even if he wasn't he'll be taking 3 levels in shadow dancer for the invisible untraceable scout, HIPS, has access to the fascinate performance, and is very charming in any circumstance. what about this character isn't a thief?

and while I'm bragging I should point out that parts of the backstory are vague because everyone else named the bar their people hang out at. then someone else made a character with ties to Calistria. I work with everyone
