Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

And our inability to work out what we've got ourselves stuck with continues unabated :)

"I've no real idea, Jareen. I've never seen or heard of anything like it."

Honesty seems the best policy here.

She greets Safier serenely, and hopes the newcomer can help more with the identification of the mystery object.

Male Thri-Kreen Barbarian 5 :: HP 53/53 +0 temp; Surges 10/10 [ AC 20, F 20, R 19, W 13 ]

'Kal watches the others ponder over the magical items. Understanding that is not his role in the clutch, he trusts that the smarter members will figure it out. Instead, Th'Kal does his best to stand guard for the group without being obvious about it.
Bluff(?): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (10) + 0 = 10 -- to try and NOT look like he's on guard duty at the table and instead fit in with those around him (he doesn't want to draw attention to the importance of the items being discussed)
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 -- to try to keep his antennae alert to danger

Edit And clearly he cannot bluff his intensions...

Genetically, Th'Kal finds it tough to sit and relax with his fellows; his clearly uncomfortable stance gives away his anxiety...

Oh, I wasn't saying I succeeded, just that I thought I had rolled. But saying that, I realize that at least a day or more has passed and I think we can try again each day. So I'll just roll for each. Also, thought you were talking about the cloth armor and older stuff. Just noticed the other stuff.

Gart tried to help and got a 20, not sure if that matters. He will roll to help on the other things if asked, but was mostly just curious about the things found in the dungeon that had that strange ghost that entered his head.

I'm afraid I need my book to let you know what the treasure items do, so that'll have to wait. Re the orb, what are you trying to do - just find out what it does, or something more profound?

Jareen peruses the scrolls:

Spoiler:
A couple seem like ritual scrolls (I'll let you know which sort when I have my books) but most of the rest appears to be correspondence of some kind. Zavox was clearly a literate man of some education - probably a former templar - as the letters are addressed to him. They are from a single correspondent, someone signing themselves Hedriann. Hedriann doesn't give much away about himself but he refers one or twice to "here in Tyr". They also refer obliquely to "the undertaking" without explaining what that might be, and both Zavox and Hedriann appear to be part of some wider group or organisation as they refer to themselves as "loyal sons". It would appear that Zavox was exploring under the Red Needle for something that might be useful to their schemes, a primal entity that they could harness and bind with defiling magic. There is also a curious reference to "friends from within the wind".

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Apart from what it does, it would be nice to know if it has any history of prior use. Anything really.

History 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Irivis scrapes around for any clues for anything she might have heard about this or similar orbs.

Inspiration strikes - I don't need my books, I have THE COMPENDIUM!

Between them, the group work out what the items they have collected do.

Spoilered for space.

Veil:

Spoiler:
Alluring Veil, Level 7, Uncommon, Head Slot, 2,600 gp

This gossamer veil conceals your features and augments your glamour.

Power (Illusion) Encounter (Minor Action) You assume the appearance of a member of any humanoid race of the same size category as you. Your clothing and equipment alter appearance as you desire. The illusion doesn't alter sound or texture, so a creature listening to you or touching you might detect the illusion.

Power Daily (Free Action) Trigger: You make an attack roll using an encounter or daily attack power that has the charm or illusion keyword and miss. Effect: Reroll the attack roll and use either result.

Dagger:

Spoiler:
Wyrmtooth Dagger +2, Level 7, Uncommon, 2,600gp

Carved from a dragon's tooth, this dagger can strip away a creature's elemental defenses.

Enhancement Bonus: attack rolls and damage rolls

Critical: +1d6 damage per plus

Property On a critical hit the target loses its resistances (save ends).

Power Daily (Free Action) Until the end of the encounter, sorcerer attack powers you use through this dagger ignore the resistances of any enemy within 10 squares of you.

Fruit:

Spoiler:
Standard healing fruit.

Scrolls:

Spoiler:
Scrolls of (1 each) Magic Circle, Object Reading and Arcane Lock.

Orb:

Spoiler:
Orb of Darkest Defiling, Level 8, Uncommon, 3,400gp

When you draw on life energy to power your magic, fiery veins just beneath the surface of this black translucent sphere glow and pulse.

Enhancement Bonus: attack rolls and damage rolls

Critical: +1d6 damage per plus, +1d8 damage per plus when you use a power with arcane defiling

Property Whenever at least one ally takes necrotic damage from your use of arcane defiling, you gain temporary hit points equal to twice the orb’s enhancement bonus.

Power (Necrotic) Encounter (Free Action) Trigger: You use arcane defiling. Effect: One enemy within 20 squares of you takes necrotic damage equal to half your healing surge value.

History of the Orb:

Spoiler:
The origins of these items are lost in the dim mists of time, but an orb of darkest defiling is created of the darkest, most abominable arcane magic imaginable. They are sought after by ambitious defilers to augment their power, but owners of these items often suffer from their proximity to such vile magic, being driven to insane and ultimately fatal hubris. This doesn't seem to prevent defilers trying to obtains such items, given that many are insane already, nor prevent the damage they do to the land. As a consequence, they frequently change hands as they are claimed by new owners as the previous holders perish.

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"So, that orb's pretty nasty. Wonder what our bosses want with it."

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"To destroy it, they say. I'd agree with that, but I want to see the destruction myself. If they're sincere, then taking it to them in pieces should be just fine. If not, well, at least we're not handing them an instrument of defilement."

Irivis's voice is slightly muffled as she chomps on a dried locust snack.

Alright, so what's the plan?

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"The question is, do we trust them to destroy it, or do we think we may have to fight to make that happen?"

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan scoffs, "I didn't trust them in the first place. I really don't with something like this in their hands. We need to know what they intend to do with it, and if they say they're gonna destroy it, we need to be able to ensure that they do."

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"Let's just break it for them."

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"I'm good at breaking stuff. Arakan, you gotta make up a story though; you're more the gift of gab type.
I don't know why, but everybody always thinks I'm fulla crap."

MAP 42/42 hp

"I don't really know them that well, but that thing seems dangerous in any hands. I don't think any good could ever come from it."

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"Jareen?"

Irivis takes a leaf from Arakan's book and quirks an eyebrow at the only person likely to know more about their patron's motives.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"Do we have the resources to destroy it?"

Out of interest, is that scroll of Object Reading going to tell us anything more?

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"I was just planning to drop rocks on it from a distance."

Jareen wrote:

On destroying it, no. It could tell you other stuff, depending on what you want to know. A perusal of the ritual description should tell you how it works.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Irivis takes the scroll from Jareen (rather rudely) and scans it for information.

"Probably best to have some idea what we're doing. It would make a change at least."

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"I agree. I would also like to know if this Hedriann is one of those who asked us to steal it, or some other faction before we do anything."

I don't have books, I'll read over the descriptions tonight when I get home and see if anything occurs. Anyone else have any other ideas?

Not that anyone else knows who Hedriann is...

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"Who's Hedriann?" Furio grabs a fistful of locusts and stuffs them in his mouth.

"And,......well, I'm prone to giving them the thing, because they were going to give us money, right? I like money."

just looked to refresh myself as to what my alignment is, and seeing none, i will have to fall back on my mercenary theme

"He does make a very valid point. And if they do do something bad with it, someone would probably pay us to kill them."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I don't hold much with alignment. You default to Unaligned / Neutral.

"Perhaps, but I seem to remember them saying they wanted it to destroy it. I just thought we'd save them the effort and still get paid. Also, who is Hedriann and should we know him?"

Jareen is old and more than a little forgetful....

"Did I not say? Most of these scrolls are not spells, they are letters. It would seem our bandit friend was literate. Most of them are from a person named Hedriann who alludes to being in Tyr. They discuss their plans a little but nothing that get's us anywhere except some reference to "friends from within the wind". It occurs to me that Hedriann may have been double crossing the bandit and we are the pawns in the way. If this orb is the elemental thing they were searching for beneath the spire, which I hope it was, then there may be some connection to air elementals as this has a connection to cold elementals it would seem. This is just my conjecture."

Looking at Gart, Jareen says "It may look like a piece of glass, but I doubt this would break if you dropped it from a high tower. Of course, if you want to give it a try?"

If they want it so they can destroy it, we don't know that they will and not use it for themselves instead. What if we collect the reward for finding it, and bringing it to them, but make sure they know that we wish to be the ones to destroy it. That way we know it's destroyed, and they have reason to tell us what we need to do in order to do so."

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"He does have his uses."

Irivis nibbles another locust.

Do I see a plan of action dimly emerging from the murk of debate?

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"Yeah. Let's do what Arakan just suggested. I'm full of crunchy locusts now. I want money."

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"Let's give it a try. After all, we can always resort to violence."

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"Violence is the first resort of the awesome!"

"I've always found a well placed staff between someone else's toes starts things off nicely."

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"Exactly. And for that you're called unimaginative, or incompetent, or worse. I tells ya, the violently inclined get a bad rap."

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

So I guess we should be off to go see our employers.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

*nods agreement* to both statements

MAP 42/42 hp

"Agreed," says Gart, smiling at the antics of the gregarious mul.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"That does seem like the most sensible course of action. One of these scrolls will help us see some of the history of the thing, but I'm struggling to find a way that will help us destroy it."

With that the adventurers, still dusty from their travels, head to find their mysterious patrons at the tavern. It is getting dark by the time they arrive but the drinkers are still there and torches in sconces provide a flickering light.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"Straight upstairs I think."

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

"After you,...." Furio heads up the stairs first.

As Furio heads for the stairs, the muscular barmaid the others saw at their last visit intercepts him. She scowls and blocks his path, arms folded. "Private function. You can't go up there," she growls.

"It's OK, let them up." Kamzar, the group's mul contact, emerges from the shadows at the top of the stairs. "I heard you made it back to town. Come on up."

male Mul Fighter 4 EXP 3873

Furio grins at the barmaid;
"if it's okay with you, ma'am;"
