Jareen:

Spoiler:
That is not a valid use of Insight. Insight is 4e's version of Sense Motive. You may try again with a different skill.

Everyone - back off spoilers.

The group of four can see Arakan running after them, pursued by mounted warriors.

Arakan - we are in the middle of a skill challenge: the "run very fast for the canyons" skill challenge. Please pick a relevant skill - just to let you know: Endurance isn't valid (this is about speed), nor is Insight.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Irivis rolls her eyes slightly at the all too familiar sight of Arakan pursued by a plan gone wrong.

Jareen - a thought occurs: to get the result for your attempt above, you could consider either Nature or Perception.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Ok, go for Nature: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

M Mul Shaman 2 Elemental Priest

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 Nature

I will try and avoid any slip sands, sink pits etc. While getting as close to them as safely possible to hope I get riders to run into them

Two successes, one failure so far. Calla / Arakan.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

The half-elf, knowing that he will be the first target as the rearmost runner, uses his natural graces to overcome whatever terrain-borne obstacles that may slow him. He deftly spins to avoid the small rises of sand, tucks and rolls while diving over the small boulder, to come back to a standing run.

Acrobatics 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Three successes, one failure.

Wow, Calla really sucks at everything non-social! Okay, I'll go with Perception to try and spot a route that is easier on foot than mounted. Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 12.

Calla sees Gramma bravely fighting the mul, giving her a little more time to escape. She knows that the image will haunt her forever. I'll make it worthwhile Gramma. I promise.

She tries to focus on the twisting route of the canyons ahead of her.

Though maybe I should've taken the do-over!

Calla sees Arakan closing on them quickly. At least there's someone who keeps coming back.

Ah, OK - three successes and two failures. Back again - skill checks please.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 - Perception with +2 from Know Direction.

Sweat pours down into Irivis's eyes as her vision blurs.

And provides us with another glorious failure.

M Mul Shaman 2 Elemental Priest

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 Percp

Looking for a clear path for us through the canyons that might make it more difficult for the riders.

Frowning at the predicament Gorad looks around to try and even up the odds.

"Speed up! Speed up and run damn-you-all-to-darkness-everlasting! Arakan, move those skinny legs. Irivis, hobble faster! Come on Jareen, Gorad, or do you want the pale ones to feast on our lives?"

Calla tries to motivate her companions to greater speed.

Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3.

Yup, you blew that one.

The group, with Arakan rapidly catching up from behind, nearly make it to the canyons. But then the two riders following Arakan whoop as they get close enough for battle.

Roll initiative. You are largely weaponless, although some of you may have grabbed thorn-daggers (if you said you were) and there are plenty of rocks lying about you can hit people with.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Who is closest to the riders?

Init: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Are either of the riders the ones Irivis cursed earlier?

Init: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

Arakan is closest - I'll knock up a map tonight. No, neither of them is the ones you cursed. Just to remind you - you haven't had an extended rest yet.

I think I still have one trick up my sleeve. :)

M Mul Shaman 2 Elemental Priest

1d20 ⇒ 17init

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Init 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12. I'll reserve Calla's speed of thought power (immediate action on rolling init) until I see the map.

Nightmare evening last night. I'll get the map up tonight (hopefully).

OK, created the map - now Google.Docs is down. Hopefully I can upload it tomorrow.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

It's fine. With our current rolling, any delay on the map just means a little longer to live.

Total denial of service at home this morning - hopefully it will be better when I get home. Of course, tonight will be another late one at work, so maybe tomorrow...

Map.

OK, the pale yellow is just the ground. The deep yellow are boulders, rock walls and so on - effectively impassable without an Athletics (Climb) check or something similar. The pale green is brush, much like the stuff used to hem you in - difficult terrain and with an penchant for attacking.

Please place yourselves. Arakan is somewhere in L8 to Y12. The rest of you are somewhere on line 12 to line 20. The gap you can see between the rocks to the south is the mouth of a canyon.

Initiatives
Rider 1 17
Gorad 17
Calla 12
Jareen 9
Arakan 5+
Rider 2 5
Irivis 5-

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

H14 please.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

The coward in me says L12

M Mul Shaman 2 Elemental Priest

j16 please

Jareen? Calla?

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

L16 please.

Calla?

Sorry. Calla starts in K-18. Immediate action to move to N-14

"Arakan, everyone, get behind me and start clearing the bush. I'll hold them here."

Any sign of anyone else following these two riders? Dust clouds in the distance, that sort of thing..?

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

There'd better not be, or we're toast.

Not immediately...

By the way, Calla, remember - you don't have your weapons.

The first rider urges his crodlu forward, leaning from his saddle as he tries to stab the fleeing Arakan in the back with his spear.

Crodlu claw attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24, damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Rider spear attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 1 = 16, damage 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Gorad.

Two fully armed and armored warriors, mounted on war-beasts. Me, armed with wits, speed, and - at best - a fist sized rock. Where was the training for this scenario?"

Calla looks for a suitable rock, of a size to fit the hand and hopefully crack a skull.

M Mul Shaman 2 Elemental Priest

As Gorad mutters to himself Sandswimmer materializes at M11.

Sandswimmer lashes out at the Rider prot strike
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24vs will
1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 if hits Arakam gains 3 temp hps

Gorad's spirit fetch emerges from the sand and lashes at the rider. The man rears back, injured.

Map updated.

Calla.

Calla leaps forward as Arakan is trampled beneath the claws of the first crodlu, and winces as the cruel barbed spear of the rider finds unprotected flesh.

She gathers her mental energies and lashes at the ground with both fists, sending rock and sand flying into the crodlu's face, trying to knock it prone.

Move to N11. Standard action Concussive Strike Augment 2. (Hit: 1[W] + Constitution modifier force damage (1d8+5), and you knock the target prone. You push each enemy in the blast other than the target a number of squares equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier.) Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16; damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8. Minor action Battleminds Demand to mark the rider.

Note, I believe that Calla can use her 'weapon' keyword powers with an unarmed strike, but gets no proficiency bonus and does only 1d4 damage.

Calla reaches out with her mind, and channels her rage and fear. The crodlu is knocked off its feet and on to its side, and the rider is pushed from the saddle and rolls away to avoid being crushed.

Initiatives and conditions:
Rider 1 17+ (marked by Calla, prone)
Crodlu 1 17 (prone)
Gorad 17-
Calla 12
Jareen 9
Arakan 5+
Rider 2 5
Irivis 5-

Jareen.

Map updated.

By the way, I took the liberty of pushing the rider the full three squares. Let me know if you want to do something different.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Jareen Concentrates on the Crodlu, forcing it to accept that it faces only two opponents.

(Encounter Power) Excise from site 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 vs will, for 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 psycic damage, minor to slide the beast 5ft North. Then move to K22.

Well that didn't work right well....

Jareen concentrates.... And nothing seems to happen.

Arakan.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan barely standing on his own two feet, propped up by the defensive posture adopted by Gorad's elemental, decides to regain his composure as he takes a step backwards further behind the creature. Contrary to what seems reasonable at the moment, Arakan decides to then proceed to mock the incoming rider, trying to get him to question his own ability. "You... shouldn't... attack.... or we're tougher than you." He manages to blurt out oddly, disoriented by the hit he suffered from the previous mount and rider. Shaking the cobwebs from his brain, he tries to move back amongst the safety of the others.

Minor, Majestic Word on self, get surge+4 and slide 1 sq to M12.
Standard, Vicious Mockery on Rider 2, 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 vs. Will (range 10).
Sigh, the real vicious mockery is when the die roller keeps giving me 1's.
Move, back to I18.

That's great thanks Aubrey.

"Please tell me someone is clearing that brush out of our way!" Calla calls back over her shoulder, not looking round from the enemies in front of her.

Two 1's in a row - I would say that the gods mock you, only there aren't any in DS.

The rider is unimpressed with Arakan's attempt to demoralise. He charges at Calla, spear levelled.

Rider 1 charges Calla:
Crodlu claw attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 1 = 23 to hit v AC, damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Rider spear attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 1 = 28 to hit v AC, damage 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Ow! Seems my guys are getting all the luck. Crit with the spear, so that's a total of 14 damage to Calla.

Map updated.

Irivis.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Curse Rider 2
Hand of Blight (Fort) v Rider 2
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Looks like a miss.
Move to H22 and gain concealment.

Stumbling around to look at the riders, Irivis curses with deep feeling and drives her rod into the sand. Sweat pours into her eyes and mars her aim as she staggers towards the thorny growth blocking their escape.

The world of DS is a harsh world, but it's got nothing on the Paizo dice roller.

Calla is almost buried under the charging mass of the crodlu and rider, but as the dust clear she still stands strong and unbloodied.
