Aubrey:
With the one trying to back away, but the other so nearby, Arakan decides he needs to finish off the one lying at his feet. He stands, draws his widow's knife and attempts a reverse knife grip across the front of him to bleed the man. In his worried haste, he almost drops the knife while spinning it over in his hand, and throws his swing way off.

By 5' I'm guessing you mean adjacent? Move to stand, Minor to draw the weapon, Sly Flourish 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9 vs AC (CA for him being prone). Darn, I needed the extra sneak attack.

Captives:
Aubrey, can Calla use the same skill as Irivis? If so, then she will just keep her head down and plod onwards. If not then I will have to come up with something more creative.

Calla's normally quick mind is as slow as her plodding footsteps. She is lucky that her pale hooded robe reflects the worst of the sun. Over time her tears dry to a salt crust around her eyes. Soon her mouth is equally dry. Somewhere her trained mind notes numbers of captors, looks for weaknesses or signs of dissent in their ranks.

But her surface mind can do nothing other than walk and endure.

Endurance: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Captives:

Spoiler:
Irivis and Calla just stoically bear the brunt of the red suns harsh rays. Gorad, a more skilled desert taveller, makes the most of his experience. Around them, the rest of the captives stagger on.

Four successes, no failures.

Jareen? In case you are unfamiliar with the form, the skill challenge is where you each use your skills to achieve a certain end - in this case, not being frazzled by the desert sun. They can differ in format, but in this one you each need in turn to select a skill; if you can provide a reasonably convincing explanation of how you used it (that's quite important) and then make a check, hopefully you will roll high enough to succeed. Once everyone has had a go, we go round again until enough successes are racked up, or too many failures, when the skill challengs ends. If the challenge succeeds, the objective is obtained and xp rewarded. Failure leads to some less welcome outcome. You can, where appropriate (again, it is up to you to suggest something) use a power instead of a skill check.

Arakan:

Spoiler:
The nearest elf gets back up on his feet, drawing his blades. He slashes at Arakan in furious vengeance. The archer meanwhile fires again, trying to wing the half-elf.

The skirmisher makes 2 attacks:
Attack 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23 v AC to hit, damage 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Attack 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 v AC to hit, damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
If both hit, that's an extra 4 damage.

The archer fires:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 v AC to hit, damage 5

Ouch! I think that's an unconscious Arakan. Now that is what you get for being heroic!

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Aubrey:
Arakan looks worried as the elf draws his two blades. The first cut does a number on him, as the second aggravates the wound further, and the bard thinks to himself he may just have a chance to recover. It is the sting of the arrow that dashes the thought from him before he even finishes it. He knew there was a reason he should avoid heroics. He could have hid and found the beast himself, or made his way to the city alone. The possiblities fade into darkness as he hits the sand.

Yes, it's 2 points over. Those were some serious attack rolls. I need to stop getting 1's. A solid SA could have possibly dropped the first one (10-23 damage) with a decent roll right?

Not sure if posting two skills together is allowed or not, if not, count the diplomacy as the next "round" check.....

Jareen watches their captors as they move, looking for the one most likely to respond well, then begins talking to him to attempt to get some water....

Insight to find a likely mark: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Diplomacy to get a drink: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Captured:

Spoiler:
By looking pathetic, Jareen manages to cadge a drink from one of the raiders. The raider does it mainly to mock how useless Jareen is, but a drink is a drink and pride is for the thirsty.

A single check is all that was required. Your second roll was a fail, but your first roll was a success, so I'll take that and ignore the other. Five successes, no failures.

Arakan:

Spoiler:
Yes, he was nearly bloodied with the first attack, but it was still a bit of a long shot getting him down the next round. But you were unlucky with those attack rolls, both yours and theirs. Nice try, but...

Anyway, you can spend a healing surge to get back to positive hit points, and any others to recuperate.

The column stops for a brief rest. The land is rocky with canyons leading off in a maze, though the raiders seem to know where they are heading. A few minutes later later, two elves return from behind the pack, dragging the battered form of Arakan under the arms. One of the elves seems injured, and certainly pretty hostile-looking. But he looks better than Arakan, who is covered with crusted blood - most of it seemingly his own. They dump him in the dust with the other prisoners.

The injured elf leans over the half-elf where he sprawls and hisses, "The only reason you are alive is because we get paid for each living slave we deliver, irrespective of condition. After you're delivered, all bets are off." He gives Arakan a swift kick and stalks off.

End of spoilers. Arakan will be pleased to know he finds you all in the middle of a skill challenge, and it's his turn. The objective is to survive a march through the desert, so pick a skill (or, if you have one, a relevant power), tell me why it's relevant, and make a skill check. Also, I'm sure his companions would like to greet him warmly.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan coughs, spitting up the blood that keeps finding its way into his lungs, curling fetal as he receives a kick. With a limp arm he reaches for the elf as he walks away, grasping at one of the skins of water he has at his side. In his current state, he moves too slow and catches the strap of the skin, stopping the elf in his tracks. Angering further the man that beat him and receiving a punch to the jaw for his efforts. Arakan falls back to the ground, and spits out more blood. "Looks like my blood will be the only thing that wets my throat" he derides himself for his foolishness.

Thievery 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9, OH, COME ON! enough with the fumbles already.

Man, Arakan is going to priceless in this campaign.

Five successes, one failure, back to the beginning. Who's next? Don't be shy.

Oh, just to let Arakan know, you have had all your equipment taken except your armour.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Moving alongside the crumpled half-elf, Irivis hauls him to his feet and silently hands over some water. When he has drunk enough, she takes the skin back and regards him with an arctic stare.

"Just so you know, Arakan, I'm helping you stay alive so nobody can say I killed an injured man. From now on, you walk with me."

The sun continues to beat down, but she ignores it as best she can in favour of trying to overhear anything helpful from their captors about their destination.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 - Streetwise.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan drinks what he is allowed, giving Irivis a silent nod in thanks, but he does not look at her. He stares at the ground a heavy scowl disrupting his features. He speaks to her in a dry whisper, the water just enough to give him his voice back, "I care not one whit for your reasons. You can level all the glares you want in my direction, but I walk where I choose. If you think you need to keep an untrusting eye on me, you will have to hobble your best." At this he walks purposefully toward the front of the group of prisoners, putting on a cold blank stare, and almost successfully hiding that he holds his injuries.

Like always, purely IC irritation, nothing personal. I just like to make sure it's clear. If it is a new round of checks, am I able to try another? If so Endurance 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22 and add the following

His stubborness is the only thing keeping him going at this point. He's learned his lesson, and he wants it to be known that he needs neither help or charity to make it through the forced movement of the new slaves... or in his case the re-enslaved.

Aubrey:
Arakan is angry at himself, and will be bitter for a bit over his failure. He will most likely be taking it out on the others though, as he knows what they think of him and that he won't be able to convince them otherwise. Irivis' opininion especially bothers him, as he has grown fond of her, and she is the closest he's ever had to a true friend.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Arakan:
Completely understood and reciprocated.

"I can hobble fast enough."

Irivis proves the truth of her words as she stomps to the front to join Arakan.

"This is curiosity before the sun parches any speech out of us. Getting rid of the snipers was brave, but did you always mean to run?"

It's probably the closest thing to an olive branch she's prepared to offer. Against her own better judgement, Irivis is aware of liking Arakan despite herself.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

He doesn't look at her, just stares straight ahead and responds sullenly "Does it matter what my intentions were? They failed either way, and all any of us have to show for my actions is the sun over our heads and the sand in our throats." His voice cracks a little at this last, only helping to punctuate his point.

EDIT: Reminder to all. If you are within 10 squares of me you get a +1 to Diplomacy checks.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"That's all any of us have to show for any of our actions."

She says no more and passes the waterbottle again.

6 successes, 2 fails. Overall success, 50 xp each.

The slave coffle emerges from a canyon on to a ridge. To the north the ground drops away to the silty depths of the Estuary of the Forked Tongue. Closer to hand, a ruined tower, not much more than a circular shell of masonry, keeps watch. There are more raiders here and their camp, and a few more of the strange elves: pale skin and hair, almost totally wrapped wrapped in colourful silks, incongruous with the rough mercenaries. A flat area just to the north of the tower has a few items of strange apparatus, with the elves seemingly tinkering with it.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Irivis looks at the apparatus in the distance, her curiosity roused.

Might she be able to take any kind of guess for what this stuff is?

Arcana checks.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27

Jareen (and anyone else who gets more than 20):

Spoiler:
The area looks like a ritual circle of some kind, and the various bits and pieces seem to be for focussing arcane energies. Although it is difficult to determine what it might actually do, the set-up has the look of a very powerful arcane ritual.

Jareen (and anyone getting more than 25):

Spoiler:
So powerful, in fact, that it could well be fatal to be around when it is cast, given that it also almost certainly involves some serious defiling.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 - Arcana

Taking water to her companions, Irivis uses the distraction to murmur, "Try and stay together if we can. There's something bad going on. Very bad."

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arcana 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

In his new sullen state, Arakan almost ignores what's going on around him. He almost seems resigned to wait and see what the slavers have in store. He replies to Irivis' warnings snidely, "Something bad? You don't say? Was it the slavers that gave it away?"

Fumble! AGAIN! Karma better have something special for me to make up for this.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"That's right. I noticed we'd been captured."

Irivis sounds quite proud of herself.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Jareen stares at the works for a moment, then simply but very quietly says "Shit. No wonder they wanted the slaves in any shape or form. That thing will kill them. Wouldn't surprise me if its powered by them too."

M Mul Shaman 2 Elemental Priest

"I would rather die now than have my spirit consumed by such desceration. We have to find a way out" Eyeing Jareen suspiciously..."You seem to have a keen eye for such things..."

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Jareen looks down his nose a gorad, "Well, I wouldn't be of any use to anyone for my strong arm, would I boy? I have knowledge of historical events that would curl your toes and send you screaming for your mummy. But in this case, my knowledge is a little more, practical."

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

At Jareen's words, Arakan searches his memory for any tales he has heard about unusual devices that ran off the life of slaves. Suspecting, however, that there just may be a reason closer to his own for Jareen's knowledge, the half-elf measures each of the old man's words carefully.

History 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21, Insight 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Dark Sun info:
I'm not sure if this is how Aubrey is running it, but on Athas most Sorcerer-kings do not allow reading, and the Templars hoard their being allowed to do so jealously. They deal swift and immediate punishment to anyone caught reading. That being the case, even wizard's spellbooks come in other forms, knotted ropes, woven patterns, runic carvings, tattoos, or body scarring (branding) are just some examples of other means.

M Mul Shaman 2 Elemental Priest

Gorad glares at Jareen before relenting "I too have seen fabulous things one day I may introduce you to some of them, but this gets us no where. I bow to your knowledge"

At first Calla stares unseeing at the tower, and at the elves with their strange devices. Her eyes are open but her mind is still marching through an endless desert. Better that scorching emptiness than reliving the moment when her father's body spasmed around the raider's cruel spear. Much better to let her mind wander, lost, in dunes.

Irivis words break through, a little. Very bad? How can anything get worse? she silently agrees with Arakan. Jareen and Gorad seem to know something, but puzzling it out from their conversation is too hard. Anger rises in her.

"Speak plainly or be silent! Enough riddles, what do you see?" she rasps through parched lips. Her first words since the capture.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"They're defiling. It looks as if they need living slaves for fuel."

On the literacy thing, I'd assume that you can't read unless you have a noble or templar background. Calla's a bit of a marginal case. It's probably pretty hard to run a merchant house without records, so a mercantile background probably would lean towards literacy. I'd be very surprised if Gorad or Arakan can read.

Arakan, if you get 25 or more on an Arcana or Nature check:

Spoiler:
You have heard of them, but never expected to meet any. The stange "elves" could be an eladrin, the legendary inhabitants of the Lands Within the Wind.

The prisoners are herded into the tower. It is nothing much more than a shell open to the sky, with rough, slightly inward-sloping walls perhaps twenty feet high and a sandy floor. There is one way in and out: through the gap in the wall where the doorway has collapsed, which the raiders block with thorny brush once the last slave has entered. At least it is out of the sun.

Perception, DC 15. If any one of you makes that, you can all try Arcana checks. Now you have noticed what is going on, you can use your rolls to assist each other. If you get 15 or more on the Arcana check:

Spoiler:
You see three main arcane circles, rather than just one. The first is on the flat area just north of the tower ruins. Strange fist-sized crystals resting on stands of wood and bone ring this area, and interlocking sigils have been marked on to the bare rock with pigment around its perimeter. Just to one side of this, and slightly interlocking with the first, a smaller ring has been marked out, at the centre of which is another of these crystal assemblies. A much larger circle also interlocks with the first. This has been drawn around the tower, with crystals simply placed in a ring around it and linked by a simple painted line.

If you get 20 or more:

Spoiler:
The interlocking circles are probably intended to allow arcane power to flow between them. The first circle is probably where the ritual will take place, and where most of the energy will be wielded and consumed. The second circle seems to be intended to draw off some of the energy for some purpose other than the main ritual. The third circle around the tower is most likely to improve the efficiency of drawing off the life energy of those inside. This is unlikely, however, to limit the defiling damage to simply within the tower.

If you get 25 or more:

Spoiler:
The main ritual is hard to immediately define from the set-up. The energies would seem to be directed upwards into the sky. The smaller circle is a bit easier to identify - it looks like a teleportation circle.

Can I be a pain and ask for a diagram of the circles?

Irivis looks and absorbs what she can.

You can ask.

It's fairly simple: you have a big circle around the tower. Connecting to that (like a Venn diagram) is another, somewhat smaller circle to the north - the main ritual circle. Interconecting with this second circle (but not the first) is a much smaller circle.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Nope. Okay next is Perception to make Arcana 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Again, no, Arakan seems to not care. At least now I've managed to get all those single digit rolls out of the way... right? That's how it works, doesn't it? lol

Well, Arakan didn't need to make the Perception check, and his Arcana check can assist Irivis', so it's not all bad.

Schematic of the circles. The slightly odd reverse C shape is the tower, hopefully the circles are self-explanatory.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

Thank you :)

Irivis continues to ponder.

Check now up to 23 with Arakan's aid.

"Hmmmm, something to do with teleportation from what I can tell, I've seen circles like the smaller one over there before. That middle circle seems to be drawing energy off for some other reason I cannot fathom though. We need to be away from there though, this could defile a great area!"

Errmmm Arakan, I appear to be stealing some of yourdice-luck! Sorry about that......

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan looks to be getting irritated at the obvious statements, based off convoluted reasoning. "Right, thank you all for stating the obvious." he spits sarcastically "We are indeed in a bad situation. They are going to use us for something we don't want. It will be a great hardship on us, and could cause our death. Or I could sum it up simpler and say, we are prisoner slaves." He rolls his eyes at it all, begins to turn back away from the others, but can't help himself. "The information we need right now is a plan, nothing more. We can worry about what they plan to do with us, AFTER we are no longer under their yoke. For right here, and right now, we should be focusing on what WE plan to do with us." His eyes dart back and forth, obviously thinking "I can do this, for a start"

He conjures into existence a simple spade, made from solidifed psychic energy. It vanishes, before he summons a simple pole in the same way, which disappears, before he makes a small length of rope. "It may not be much, but I can make simple tools. Nothing too intricate. We need to figure out what we do have between us to use. We will need all of it." The talk of escape seeming to get him worked up, and his spirits lift a little.

Edit: Aubrey, how climbable are the walls? You said it was open on the top, right?

Open at the top. The walls are rough, but they tilt inwards.

Female Human Warlock 4 (Sorcerer King, Wildling) HP 46/46

"There's an exit, Arakan."

Irivis wanders casually over to the harsh brush barrier and tries to work out how many guards are around and if there's any patten to their movements.

How many other slaves apart from us?

About fifteen.

Perception check, DC 15 (people can assist if necessary):

Spoiler:
The guards seem to split into two main contingents - human and mul warriors mounted on crodlus, and elf runners on foot. There's maybe ten of the former and perhaps fifteen or so of the latter. There are five guards on the entrance to the tower. Of the strange veiled elves, there seem to be four of them.

Well, here we hit a conundrum. That info really isn't something that Jareen would notice In Character.... It's extraodinary luck that he has. So, if no one else notices, then he'll speak up, but if someone else notices first, well, it seems more natural that way.... :)

Well, if he made the roll, he made the roll. It could simply be he counted them on the way in, as an educated man versed in higher mathematics (i.e. he can count above ten). It's hardly outside the realms of possibility he would be interested - he is intelligent, after all, and knowing mow many people are holding him captive is pretty important information.

Gorad breaks his characteristic silence with..
"We seem to have 2 groups of guards, the non elves are riding on the crodlus and the elves runners on foot. We are looking at 10 or so riders and 15 or so runners. There are 5 guards by the tower and I see 3 or 4 of the veiled people.... We have at least 30-35 people not to mention the 5 guards we will have to get past... My abilities are extremely limited if I can't find something to focus through.."

Looking at Arakan "While we are captured you are one of us, here is your chance to regain our graces... Can you make a totem similar to what I carried before?"

Arakan scoffs at Gorad's statement "What do I care of you graces? I'm one of you, yet you stand there, telling me that I should create something to allow you to be effective." Turning to the rest, and stopping at Irivis "What does it matter that there is an opening right at the front? Haven't any of you ever had to escape before? You don't just dance out the front, out-numbered by more than there were when we were first taken, and we have less to use than we did then. Escape is a secret maneuver, under the cover of darkness, through guile, trickery, and skin of your teeth planning. It doesn't happen by pushing aside the door to your cell and walking out, while laying waste to anyone standing in your way. If we could do that, we wouldn't be here in the first place." Towards the end his voice begins to rise, but he drops it as soon as he realizes he could be overheard.

Calming down, he addresses the Mul "Let's not worry about what we can do only by having access to other things we may not find. I'm asking what can we do, with nothing, everyone has a little something, that takes nothing to do."

Arakan turns back toward the wall, testing the cracks and crevices, stability, and possible handholds. "I'm not the best climber, but it's important to know what we have at our disposal." At this, he tries hauling himself up the inside of the tower. His hands, however, find no purchase, and when they do the old stone crumbles under his grip. Frustrated, he clenches his fists, turns with his arms crossed scowling at the others as he flops his back against the very wall that denies him egress.
