Here's Landis. Let me know what you want me to do about Background?

Landis' stats look good. Pretty much any culture from Avistan or Garund is fair game.

As for why your character is on board, it can be for pretty much any reason. There is a contingent of prisoners on board, so your character could be a prisoner. The party are a group of escaped convicts who jumped ship to get out of town. Plenty of free persons would have thrown their lot in with the colony for promises of their own land and the riches of the new world.

So is Landis in? If so I'll write up a brief background.

I am going to be moving this weekend and probably won't be able to post again after work today until the end of the weekend or the start of next week.

Landis, I was hoping for a brief background before deciding. Just a couple sentences to let me know what this guy is all about.

Landis background is now in his profile. Pretty much done, except I need to move one skill point around, to get a rank in Profession: Blacksmith.

Landis Thatch reviewed and approved. We'll have an introduction once the party gives up exploring for the night and returns to the ships.

Hey, Biter told me you might be looking for more players. Still true? I have a ranger I can adapt for the cause.

Mors, I'd love to have you in the group, if you'd like to come up with some sort of healing character.

That sounds great - I'll roll up a healer, then! I should something later today, or tomorrow.

Question for Nazard:
How do you run prepared spells? If I want to heal twice, do I need to choose 'Cure Light Wounds' for both of my Level 1 spell slots?

I assume from your question it's a druid, because if it's a cleric, you don't need to prepare it at all.

I've been going along with core for spell preparation, so yes, if you want to cast it twice, you need to prepare it twice (yet another reason why I don't like spell preparation at all, but suggesting getting rid of spell preparation usually gets people in an uproar).

I was planning for cleric. I must not be on the same page.

Cleric's have "spontaneous casting" which means you can convert any memorized spells to a cure spell of the same level on the fly. In other words you don't have to memorize 'Cure Light Wounds' but if you've got, for example 'Bless' memorized you can sacrifice your bless spell and convert it to cure light wounds. Note that you can't convert your Domain spell slot this way.

In addition you have the 'channel positive energy' ability which can be used for healing as well. Clerics are not just mobile MASH units anymore.

Gotcha. I guess Cure Light Wounds was a bad example.

I'm assuming that if I want to use a non-healing spell multiple times, I need to prepare it multiple times.

For instance, if we are traveling across the desert, and I want to use Create Water three times, I would need to use all my level 1 slots for that spell?

Again, not the best example, since create water is an orison. However, you have it correct that if you want to cast a first level spell three times (like bless, or shield of faith), you would need to prepare it three times. The mechanic does reward forethought and strategic thinking and management of resources, I'll give it that.

OK. Now I understand what you're asking. Yes multiple prayers for the same spell to be cast over again, except for 0-level spells which are unlimited.

Okay, here is my cleric's profile.

His name is Maenír - I'll be posting with him from here on out.

HP roll for level 2: 1d8 ⇒ 5

Looks good. Now that the players have been assembled, we can get things going. I'll do up some introductions later tonight.

Game = kaput.

Are we going to need mounts, pack animals, or any special equipment?

If I may make a suggestion, Maenir. I'm not sure how much good that extra gold will do you in this untamed frontier. Perhaps there are some other things that might be worthwhile? Perhaps potions and/or scrolls?

Animals are the one thing you can't have with you, as there was no room on the ship you both took. Any special equipment you think your character would think to buy is fine.

That's what I was thinking, too. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much more I can actually carry. I suppose I can lug a bit more in my pack, as long as I drop it for combat.

update: Turns out upgrading my bow to Darkwood helps me out in both departments.

I don't believe potions or scrolls would add weight. Antitoxin is also 50gp and no encumberance. Again, just throwing out ideas. Sorry if its coming across wrong.

Game = kaput.

No worries - that sounds like a great idea.

Game = kaput.

MarkofBane, thanks for the advice - I traded in a bunch of those heavy, shiny round things for some scrolls and potions that will keep us happy and healthy should my spells prove too taxed.

After all, "What good is a reward, if you ain't around to use it?"

Nazard:
I replaced Linguistics: Goblin with Use Magic Device - Makes more sense, anyway.

Landis and Maenir, if you two are ready, I can tell you a bit about your journey across the Arcadian Ocean.

You crossed on the smallest of the three original ships, the Cloud Climber out of Andoran. The captain is a quiet man who keeps to himself, but his shyness is more than compensated by the gnome priest of Abadar, Banker Harod Camder. Banker Camder is a typical gnome in many ways (if you know gnomes): full of zest for life and a little mischievous.

The journey itself is filled with excitement. First, your ship is disguised and joins a Rahadoumi merchant marine convoy to run the Chelaxian blockade at the Arch of Aroden. Second, you help your sister ship the Desert Rose fight off a pirate attack, though no pirates attempt to board either vessel, so that fight is more an exchange of arrows and ballistae. Then a massive storm hits, nearly capsizing your tiny vessel on several occasions.

Throughout your journey, you hear stories of an amazing group of warriors from the third vessel, the [i]Lady Rose[i], the fleet's flag-ship, who fought Chelish privateers at the Arch, and not only repelled an attack by the very same pirates who attacked you earlier, but boarded and took the pirate ship as their own (although one of them fell in that battle). Now, these heroes have been entrusted by Lord Brycen, the Governor, as the front line of scouts to secure this new colony.

While Banker Camder expresses nothing but appreciation and admiration to you about this group, he notes that it is a small collection of people and that it would be good to balance said group with individuals who have not had their status elevated by the Governor himself. You get the feeling that the gnome is concerned that Lord Brycen is securing these heroes' loyalties and then promoting them up into the colonial echelons, thereby expanding his own power base. He has already added them as a fifth vote that will go his way into the previously four-way council (and one of those four, Pathfinder Falcon Gray, is already known to be a supporter of the Governor). With three of the five votes favouring Lord Brycen, Banker Camder is concerned that the seeds of the democratic process in place for this colony will be trampled by the feudal weeds of ancient Taldor reborn in Lord Brycen.

To that end, he has selected you two to join this party of adventurers, not to undermine or corrupt, but to add a balancing voice, and, naturally, to assist the group honestly and valiantly. He does add, however, that it would be good to keep himself apprised if it seems that his fears of a Taldane take-over turn out to be justified.

As you're preparing to head to shore in a launch, word comes back that the group encountered a strange and fearsome creature, and that two native corpses have been discovered. The group seems to be setting up camp on the beach near the mouth of a rough-and-tumble river.

Landis, if you can see this, feel free to start posting away in the main thread here.

Sorry. Was in PR on a business trip, and the internet there can be a bit finicky. I'm back now.

Nazard, a headsup for you. There is a new DM in the Gamer Connection section who is taking input from potential players on what they'd like to play as well as what campaign. Just thought you might like to suggest Second Darkness for him... That's one I might be interested in joining in on as well.

Tempting, but I just joined a new game starting out. At the moment, I'm other running or playing in nine games. I suffer from the addict's view of old: one more can't hurt.

So maybe...

I totally understand. I am at six that I am playing in. Still, I am tempted by the thought of another Paizo AP. Currently I am in a Kingmaker and a Legacy of Fire, with the Kingmaker DM looking to run the next new AP for us as well.

Then go add your voice to the thread for Second Darkness too. Maybe we can start a movement!

Maenir/Mors, please, please, please, PLEASE let me in your new Second Darkness game (and Navior too, we've been looking to get in on a game together for awhile now).

There might be bonus xp in it for you in this game if you let us in that one...

Of course, I am just kidding. I totally understand about putting a party that has to work well together, so no worries or hard feelings either way.

The secret is out, I guess. What name is Navior posting under? - I didn't see him on there.

Oh, nm, I found him. A Pally/Ranger? I love it!

Grimara "Grim" Pondle.

I almost posted a suggestion, given that there are so many dwarven character submissions, that you go with a group of only dwarves, but then I noticed my friend had posted a half-orc. If dwarves only interested you at all, I'll quickly fire off an e-mail suggesting a quick re-work...

He posted two possibilities, the pally/ranger, and then the half-orc when you mentioned that pallies would have big difficulties. He submitted the second character when people (like me, sorry) were suggesting darker characters.

Sorry to be nosy, but did I miss something? Who is Navior?

If you want an all dwarf group, it would be quite easy for me to switch over Jawn Stagg. I'll work on it a bit; even if you run with another arcanist or the human Jawn Stagg, it is a fun exercise!

Sorry, I jacked my own thread. I'm trying to get into a Second Darkness game that Maenir is running, with a friend. None of those last few posts had anything to do with this game.

And I'm trying to get into the same Second Darkness game as a wizard. :)Is Navoir from your RL game that you've been trying to find a SD game with?

markofbane wrote:

Oh, sorry. I thought you were thinking we were switching Arcadia game over to only dwarves. That makes much more sense!

Yes, Navior is the RL guy. But like I'm saying to Maenir/Lekku/Draga, put together a party that makes sense. I won't really have Maenir's legs ripped off or get him level drained if he doesn't let us both in.

Edit: probably not...

Game = kaput.

Yes, I see what you mean. That creative 're-organizing' of our initiatives could easily be the re-organizing of my kneecaps. Message received, loud and clear! LOL

I've been using a google site for my other PbP group and it's proven very useful and effective, so I decided it was past time that I made one for this group. I need e-mail addresses to let you view it, so I need addresses for Maenir and Landis. You other three should have already received invitations to view the site, which can be found here.

I'm really hoping that I'll be able to swing getting my APG pdf soonish. If people wish to rebuild characters using archetypes or switching out for new feats, that's all fine, just so long as you aren't losing abilities you've already used to any significant effect. I would prefer if the changes fit thematically with the established character, rather than just cool new stuff.

Hi folks.

I'm moving, so I'll be awol for a few days. See you soon.

Hi all,

I'm back in business, mostly. Unfortunately, I'm also going away for a week starting Sunday for work. I'll be able to post on my phone, but won't have access to maps for encounters (right in the middle of this dungeon crawl too), but I'll try to get things going a bit more.

Well, folks, I'm not sure what to do about Rorse, as he hasn't posted in a fairly long time. I don't remember if he had said anything about going on vacation. I sent him an e-mail a few weeks ago and got no response. I'm thinking of waiting until I get back from the camp I'm working at next week and if he hasn't surfaced by then, of putting out a call for recruits (or just having Rorse ride off into the sunset and not bother to replace him, the party should do just fine without another melee person).

Thoughts?

Rorse's player was in a couple other PbPs that I play in and we haven't heard from him either. In the Kingmaker campaign, his character is just going to be sidelined until (if) he is able to come back. It's too bad; he was a great player with a really good imagination.

Didn't he say he was having computer problems...
does that leave me and Rommin as the only survivors of the starting line up then?

Male Daytona 500 DM / 12

I'm good with the GM ruling on the bludgeoning damage against tiny creatures, but it really can be interpreted two ways. Here is the sentence in question from the SRD.

"A swarm made up of Tiny creatures takes half damage from slashing and piercing weapons. A swarm composed of Fine or Diminutive creatures is immune to all weapon damage."

It really doesn't say that the tiny creatures don't take damage at all from bludgeoning weapons, so I had always assumed that Tiny creatures take full damage from Bludgeoning weapons, and half from slashing and or piercing...which kind of makes sense. A swarm of bunnies would be easier to damage with a big hammer than a blade or arrow, because the damage is spread over a larger area. I can't see why logically they would take damage from a knife, but not a sledgehammer.

Has anybody seen this addressed in a FAQ or anything?

Of course a 12 might have just missed, but it does bring up an interesting question.

That's a good point, actually. Makes me think Landis should have been able to affect the swarm after all (and as these are fast zombies, not standard, they don't even have the standard DR 5/slashing, so he'd do full damage, if he had hit, of course, a 12 does miss these guys).

If what I think is going on is going on, then you've got a pretty fascinating mechanic to explain some of the monstrosities populating the game world(s).

I don't follow.
