The larger portion of the pack surges forward, brimming with anticipation. They charge at the group, slavering jaws open wide.
Hy4, moves to H3, then charges Tulgeikh. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 vs AC
Hy3, moves to J8, then charges Yuriel. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24 vs AC, damage 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Hy1, moves to H9, then charges Tulgeikh. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12 vs AC
Hy2, moves to O15, then charges Yuriel, 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 vs AC, Roedd you get an AoO when it leaves O8.
Most of them, grown soft from picking at corpses, underestimate their enemy. Only one even nipping Yuriel's thigh, just under his shield.
Anyone adjacent to a Hyena now provides combat advantage

Yuriel would probably be better at small squad tactics than I am, so please do suggest sensible placement for him. This'll be my first 4e encounter and I'm not proud...
Sensing the elf's apprehension, Jacen offers Yuriel advice on squad tactics by way of a sporting metaphor,
"Think of it like a game of fútbol, the most popular pastime in Evo Pezar…"
Remember that as a fighter you mark anyone you attack whether you hit or miss. Marked opponents take a –2 penalty to attacks that don't include you as a target. Also, whenever an opponent marked by you shifts or makes an attack that doesn't include you as a target, you get to make a melee basic attack against them (Combat Challenge).
These mechanics, along with your high Armour Class and plentiful healing surges, allow you to discourage attacks against the harder hitting, yet more fragile squad members, such as Armand and Booj (our forwards).
Yuriel Gard |
Well that last map certainly answers the question about where the hyenas are! Looking at my options, I can either use cleave to hit and mark two of the hyenas adjacent to me - probably O5 and M5. Alternatively I could use tide of iron to hit and mark one of them, and also push it further away from our squishies.
I'll wait and see what Tungeikh does, but minded to cleave this round. There are two more dogs to come before the rest of the group gets a go and tide of iron might open a hole in our front ranks.
Booj |

Except with a very fast group (and some exist), my experience is that pbp is slow enough without going strictly turn-by-turn. Of course, Aardvark may override this, but my impression is that you and Tulgeikh are both up (think of it as the second one to post is delaying until after the first).
That said, since I inferred a question mark in your post . . . I'm a fan of concentrating attacks. Since Tulgeikh is also up now, something like a Cleave targeting M4 sets up a chance to get one of these hyenas down in a hurry. Free advice, worth what you paid!
Yuriel Gard |
Booj Jacen OOC
Yriel grunts as one of the hyenas penetrates his defense. He strikes out, spear point first at one enemy then flowing back to attack the beast behind him.
Cleave attack on M4, additional strike to O5. Cleave attack roll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 v AC / 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 damage. +4 damage on O5. Mark M4 and O5.
Aardvark DM |
Just a heads up, there are numbers in the lower left corner of the Hyenas. They are a little hard to see, so I will prob try to make them more legible.
Yuriel stabs one hyena, only for another trying to take advantage of the opening to get hit by a well placed spear butt.

To emphasize a decent PbP speed, I will set a 24hr hard cap from your last post. If in 24 hours you do not post, you are delaying and will come back into the initiative either when you do post, or before the end of the round, whichever comes first. If you do not post before the end of the round, I will post for you, most likely with an at-will or basic attack. If this still seems to take long, the time may get dropped to 18hrs.
Armand Duvallier |
Aardvark
There's not a whole lot you can do about that, and I speak as someone who tries hard to keep games moving along as briskly as possible - the 24 hour cap being the basic. I try to learn player routines and make what effort I can to move things along so the overnighters (from my perspective) can get a look in before I make the morning rounds. It isn't always possible and doesn't always work, but I do try :) There's no perfect answer.
Tulgeikh |
Mark Hyenas 1 and 4 with nature’s wraith then attack H1 with Tempest assault.
Attack vs ac, 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25, damage = 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 if I hit H4 takes 4HP lighting damage.
Electricity sparks between Tulgeikh's horns and H4 as he smashes his hammer down on the H1's head.
Aardvark DM |
When Tulgeikh strikes the beast between him and Yuriel, a loud yip can be heard just over the crack of the warhammer. It appears to be favoring its side.
The last two hyenas, reluctant at first, are bolstered by their packmates attacks. They rush forward to join the fray.
Hy5 moves to I10, then charges Yuriel 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 vs AC, Damage 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 6) + 3 = 13. Roedd, you get another AoO as it passes.
Hy6 moves to H6, then charges Tulgeikh 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 vs AC, Damage 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 5) + 3 = 12.
With the mob press of Hyenas, the last two are really able to sink their teeth into the front line. The one manages to get a good bite on Yuriel, and causes him to bleed more.
Maybe they weren't reluctant at all, and just waited until the rest of the pack to give them an advantage.

Armand spins his dagger in the air in a gesture that would draw guffaws from any swordsman. The results however, are more spectacular than seem likely. A miniature whirlwind appears in the midst of the hyenas surrounding Yuriel and knocks them flat.
"Foul mammals. Fall and be eaten as you feed on the fallen. You disgust me."
He shifts prudently behind Jacen.

8 damage to H2, plus an additional 5 from flurry of blows for 13 total.
Also on hit, slide H2 to O6, where it makes a melee basic attack vs H3 as a free action at +2 to hit. Hard to narrate with a medium roll.
Aardvark DM |
Booj's strike to the hyena's head disorents it enough that it lashes at the nearest thing, thinking it was the goblin.

Move Action: Move to 05 (the space recently vacated by the drunken hyena) by way of P4 to avoid OAs
Bringing his longspear to bear on the hounds adjacent to Yuriel, Seljak cautiously jabs at the hyenas, seeking to split their focus so no one person is overwhelmed.
Minor Action: Mark hounds 5 and 3 (Battlemind's Demand - 1 pp expended)
Seeing an opening, Seljak strikes at the nearest Hyena.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 vs Fort for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 damage to H5 and an additional 5 damage to H3, H4, H5, H6 if that attack hits.
Seljak's spear strike digs a furrow into the ground, causing a wash of clods and rock and earthen hail to spray into the hyena ranks. The wash also serves to force the hyenas back, protecting the rest of Seljak's companions.
Standard Action: Earthen Hail - Everyone gains a +2 to Fortitude and Armor Class.

If that hits, both hyenas are dazed until end of Roedd's next turn.
"Gwallgofrwydd!, consume this beast!"
Aardvark DM |
Unaware of his own actions, the hyena possessed by madness strikes at the exposed neck of his packmate.
Melee basic 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 vs AC. Damage 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
He sinks his teeth into the soft neck and holds him in his grip, blood oozing from between his teeth.
Both Hy5 and Hy3 are Dazed until end of Roedd's next turn.

The hyena focused on Tulgeikh, bites at him, Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 vs AC. Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 and manages to strike true, drawing blood from Tulgeikh's meaty leg.
While the one that has Yuriel's attention can't reach him, and attacks Seljak instead, Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 vs AC. but is uncertain about his new quarry.
The prone hyena, however, merely manages to get his feet under him, and work on trying to break out of the other's grip.
