GM Notes:

Ah, forgot about that Narnel; thanks for the reminder.

Well, I'm gonna go ahead and move things forward, even though technically we should be able to retcon Cedany's action.

The three spiders that were after Narnel chase him down the tree and bite at him again!
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Narnel is much more ready this time, easily evading them all!

The spider from whose web Holly had just escaped lowers itself down a bit and bites at the halfling!
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Just missed!

The three spiders that had started to haul Crax upward lower themselves down a bit and retaliate against the strange new spider-rival!
Bite vs Pavel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Bite vs Pavel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Bite vs Pavel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Two of the bites pierce his exoskeleton and inject him with venom!
CON save DC 12: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
CON save DC 12: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

Spider-Pavel sways and staggers, clearly suffering! You have the Poisoned condition for 1 minute.

At last, Crax can get a turn! Then it'll be back to the top of the round with the rest of the party.

"Woah! Pavel's a SPIDER! Hey Crax, glad you got out of there. Did you see that Pavel's a spider?" As Holly's shield of faith deflects the attack of one of the spiders, she batters at it with her nunchaku and follows that up with a kick in its bulbous abdomen.

nunchaku attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

unarmed attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

I would use Lay on Hands to neutralize Pavel's poison, but I think he is out of reach.

Okay, so damage is 4, 2, and 4.

Corson rushes into the fray and swings a bit sloppily, but his charred target fails to get out of the way and is squished!

Meanwhile, Cedany mildly inconveniences a spider with a chilly draft. ;)

Holly is busy with her own spider, missing with her weapon but giving it a solid kick!

Narnel and Pavel, you're up!

GM Notes:

Narnel gives one of his eight-legged assailants two solid thumps, but misses with the finishing blow!

Pavel, you're currently engaged in melee with the three two spiders clustered by Corson and Crax, so moving over toward Holly gets a couple of AoOs.
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Crit damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Pavel changes targets, and is bitten hard(ish) by one of his original opponents as he moves to assist Holly. A whopping 3-damage crit.

As for scaring them away: they're wild animals, not mindless monsters or fanatical cultists or death-is-glorious Klingons, so scaring them off is a valid (if context-dependent) option. However, as a spider yourself, it seems more like Intimidate than Animal Handling. Even so, that's still a 14 after disadvantage, so not too shabby.

Spider-Pavel hisses and rears at the recently-kicked spider engaged with Holly, trying to scare it away!

Holly's opponent shrinks back a bit, hissing weakly in protest, then withdraws up its anchor-strand toward the treetops!

Narnel's trio keeps biting at him!

Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

*The spiders all clap along with the music.

The other two spiders focus their attention on Corson The Squisher!

Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

"Whew! Thanks Pavel. What's it like being a spider? Oh...that can wait until later."

Does Holly have any way of knowing that Pavel is poisoned? I'd like to use Lay on Hands on him to neutralize the poison. If not, maybe move over to Corson to do so instead?

to whichever...

Holly looks at the bite wound, "That looks like a nasty bite, friend. These spiders have poisoned you." She gently touches the wound and closes her eyes briefly. The poison coursing through her companion's body is neutralized by her supernatural power of healing.

GM Notes:

Despite the poison, Corson clobbers his target, nearly dropping it!

Narnel sends his injured opponent flying, then starts in on another!

Hm, hadn't really thought about how easy it would be to tell that somebody's poisoned... Well, if it's affecting your movements enough to give you disadvantage, it should be obvious that something is happening, and the context of "spider bites are the only thing going on" seems like it should make it an easy guess that poison is the culprit. So in this case, sure, you can easily tell they're poisoned.

Holly cures Pavel's poison!

GM Notes:

Narnel and Spider-Pavel spend the next several minutes climbing up and down trees to examine the woven pouches of webbing. Most of them are of no interest to you: a dead deer, a dead rabbit, a dead baloth, and so forth. One bundle seems to have a humanoid shape, but when you lower it down and open it, it becomes clear that the person has been killed and sucked dry at least a few days ago. From what's left of the clothing, you'd say it was either a traveler or a bandit (fortunately, not anybody from Wood Creek, it seems). The corpse has with it a shortsword and a healer's kit, though much of the kit's contents has spoiled. It has four uses left.

About 15 minutes have passed when something startling happens: Narnel and Spider-Pavel are up in the webbed branches again, and suddenly you hear hurried footsteps nearby and a female voice calls out:

"HOLD ON BROTHER WE'LL SAVE YOU!"

You look, and see a squad of elves, all armed, about 50ft away. They are all looking up toward Narnel and Pavel, and reaching for their bows.

Corson thanks Holly for the healing with a warm smile.

Corson looks at the elven warband, trying to look non-threatening, but ready to spring into action at first provocation, "Yes, we have chased off the spiders and the remaining one is our druid friend, Pavel, who chose that form to help us bring down the cocoons and traverse the web."

It is so interesting to see the world this way. Everything in mutiples. The smells. The way that walls are the same as floors. Ah, the scents.

Wait. What is that? Something is coming. My spidey senses are tingling.

Sorry about the really bad joke. I failed my will save

Pavel will duck behind the tree, hoping that his friends convince the elves to not attack.

Cheesy is my favorite flavor! ;)

Holly and Pavel are the first to react!

Holly tries to quickly explain the situation, but the elves only give her a confused glance, seeming to not understand to whom she's referring.

Spider-Pavel then rushes for cover!

The below attack will be against Pavel's AC +4, since it's pretty easy for him to cling to the other side of a tree for cover.

The elf leader start loosing arrows while she adjusts her position for a better shot!
Longbow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14, Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
The arrow hits a branch!

Crax then rattles off a slightly more detailed explanation, and something seems to "click" in the eyes of the elves.

Out of initiative.

The leader holds up a hand to halt her subordinates before any more arrows are fired. All four of the elves look quizzically in the direction of Pavel, then to the very unthreatened-looking Narnel, then to the group, and then back and forth a few times.

"Okay," says the leader. "Let's start from the beginning. Exactly what is going on with you lot and that spider?"

"You see, we are looking for trees to build a wall. There is this noble, Elegant Son-of-Something, he sounds very nice. He's giving us money to build a palisade. Some of us wanted to explore the keep, but others wanted to build the wall. We couldn't decide so Elder Yana decided for us that we should come out here..." Holly begins to explain, helpfully.

Watching Holly ramble on with the Elves, Crax'll speak up as well, "that spider is the noble druid, Pavel, he has the extraordinary ability to transform into creatures of all shapes and sizes," Looking around at the grove they are in, "As Holly said, we are here looking for the perfect wood to build a wall around our village, we hope to protect the future generations of our village by building defenses,"

Finally, making eye contact with each of the elves before continuing, "We'd welcome the aid of your people in the defense of our village, let me be the first to extend a peaceful hand of friendship to the Elves of the Northern Woods"

Narnel climbs down, and addresses the others,

Allow me to speak with my brethern.

He then turns back to the elves and speaks in their native tongue.

Elven:
Brothers, well met. We have encountered, defeated and driven off many of the denizen spiders of the area. This spider is indeed my friend, Pavel, transformed with his druidic abilities into a spider, to aid in the defeat of those that attacked. The overzealos halfling speaks the truth. We are here in search of specific trees to form a palisade around Wood Creek Village.

Do I recognize any of the eves from my upbringing amoung them?

Pavel descends the tree, visible to the Elves but clearly not threatening them. He then transforms back into a human

"As my friends have said, I am a druid and not a spider. I took this form in an attempt to scare the spiders off without killing them. They really are fascinating creatures.

One thing that we should make clear is that we wish to make certain that building a wall around the village will NOT harm the forest. We will use rocks wherever possible and will only take those trees that can be safely harvested from the forest."

Corson stands back to watch the scene unfold, having had run-ins with elves before. He tries to seem non-threatening, while staying aware of his surroundings.

You're more familiar than most with the stories of a reclusive clan which fiercely defends the forest against any threats, external or internal. You're probably one of the few who knew with confidence that they were indeed elves, but again, they're reclusive and fierce, so you don't know much in particular. These elves are not from your hometown.

The entourage remains impassive and on-guard while the leader listens to each of you, her eyes narrowed in suspicion. At least, until suddenly the spider is a human; then she seems a little more convinced.

"Okay," says the leader, "That solves the elf-in-distress situation I thought we'd happened across. However, a new matter is now raised. You plan to lead loggers into our forest? You are not the first to promise that no harm would be done. Those who harm this forest are not easily forgiven, and more than one settlement has fallen since our ancestors first took up the task of protecting this forest. Do you really expect me to trust you?"

Time for your best smiles, kids. ;)

Holly smiles at the elves, "Hi, I'm Holly Berrythwaite of the Wood Creek Berrythwaites. We promise we won't harm the forest. We rely on the bounty of these woods as well. It won't be more than one small group of loggers, and we only need a few hundred trees or so. If you cannot believe me — a paladin — nor our druid, Pavel, that we will tread lightly, perhaps you will believe our own elf?"

Now that I say that out loud, it does seem like an awful lot of trees.
