GM Notes:

Sorry for my absence yesterday. It was a rough day.

Anyway, that 2/4 ratio isn't looking good. The road ahead will be difficult.

The elven leader seems unimpressed and unconvinced. Nevertheless, she speaks:

"I don't trust you," she says flatly. "At all. Even so, I will give you one chance to prove yourselves." She gestures upward toward the webs, then continues. "This isn't typical territory for giant spiders. My team, and some others, are looking into why they've spread through this area. There's probably a nest somewhere, and finding out where will likely shed some light on the situation, even if it just suggests a next step of investigation. Help us out with finding the next and exterminating spiders, and I might give your request a second thought. Understood?"

GM Notes:
Pavel the druid wrote:
"Of course we'll help. But do we need to exterminate the spiders? Perhaps they can just be relocated?"

The elven lady shakes her head. "I'm not talking about exterminating all the spiders in the whole forest," she says. "That would be disastrous, even if it were feasible. However, it's similarly dangerous for them to be in this region. It's disruptive to the harmony of the forest, and could have far-reaching consequences. Let me clarify: the goal is not to hunt down all the spiders. The goal is to find the nest. Along the way, dispatch any spiders which threaten you. If they decide this area is too dangerous to claim as their territory, they will move elsewhere; hopefully to prior territory, once we find out why they left in the first place."

She gives a little sigh of impatience at having to explain so much to outsiders, then says, "My team and I will head east. You go west. I'll make sure someone finds you before the day is out to see what you've uncovered, if anything. Now," she says, clearly trying hard to be patient, "Are there any other questions?"

GM Notes:
Corson, the Green wrote:

In the many, many years she's lived, she's been through this exchange many times, as she said. It's a long-simmered impatience.

The skeptical elf and her entourage head off to the east, and you begin your search toward the west. Narnel keeps to the trees, checking the "cocoons" for survivors, but to no avail.

Knowing now that spiders could be lurking anywhere in preparation for an ambush, you all keep a sharp eye out, proceeding cautiously.

Bunch o' Perception: 6d20 ⇒ (15, 11, 5, 10, 9, 7) = 57
/facepalm

Cedany alone spots dark shapes ahead in time to react!
In Round 1, everybody but Cedany is surprised.

Cedany: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Corson: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17
Crax: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Holly: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Narnel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Pavel: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Li'l Spiders: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Big Spiders: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Cedany sees four smallish spiders (same kind as before) up in the webbed branches, and two much larger spiders (like, big enough to kill a horse) lurking on the ground, hidden among the trees and underbrush up ahead about 30ft.

Cedany can act; everyone else is surprised.

Order:
Cedany/Crax/Corson/Holly/Pavel

Are they swarming down at us at once - and can I color spray them as they do, to catch at least 2-3? If I'll only catch one before they're upon us I'll Witch Bolt one of the big ones instead

Attack?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 dmg: 1d12 ⇒ 11

or

color spray: 6d10 ⇒ (6, 2, 1, 2, 4, 8) = 23 hp blind for one round

Also second the question that's been posted in Discussion, have we had time for a short rest?

Cedany shouts a warning to the others as she unleashes magic at the approaching spiders.

GM Notes:

Since you spotted them and beat them in initiative, it's more like you realized they were about to pounce and reacted quickly enough to get in a preemptive action before they actually spring their ambush on everyone else.

Cedany fires a bolt of magic at one of the bigger spiders, but misses!

The rest of you then see the spiders as they spring into action!

4d3 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 3) = 8

The four smaller spiders skitter toward you along the treetops, then drop down with ensnaring webs like before, though due to closing the distance they can only reach the front rank (which I'm speculating on): one at Corson, two at Holly, and one at Narnel.

WebPounce vs Corson: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
WebPounce vs Holly: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
WebPounce vs Holly: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
WebPounce vs Narnel: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Only Narnel manages to evade! Corson and Holly, you're Restrained.

The two larger spiders charge forward!

2d3 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3

Bite vs Corson (ADV+4): 2d20 ⇒ (18, 16) = 34=22, Damage: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Bite vs Holly (ADV+4): 2d20 ⇒ (12, 7) = 19=16, Damage: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Corson is bitten hard, but Holly narrowly evades harm in spite of the webs' interference!

Okay, that's Round 1. Everybody's un-surprised now, and we're back to the top. Everybody except Narnel can act!

Scowling at the ambush, Crax will weave a powerful spell that hopefully will give his group an advantage.

Sleep, 5d8 = hitpoints affected, starting with lowest: 5d8 ⇒ (5, 6, 7, 3, 3) = 24

Its a 20 ft burst from a point I choose, I imagine I can only get the 2 big spiders, so I'll target them, hoping to put one of the big guys asleep, assuming they have less than 24 hitpoints. It looks like there is no save, I copied the spell rules right from the book and I'm not reading anything about a save.

"Its an Ambush!! Look alive,"

GM Notes:

You're correct that there's no save; it's sort of like a pseudo-damage spell that only works if it's the final blow, so to speak. Anyway, since all the spiders approached from the front, you can actually get a couple of smaller spiders in the same area as well. Which is good, because you're 1HP short of sleeping a big spider. :/

One of the spiders in front of Holly goes limp, dangling from its silk strand like a pendulum!

Cedany, Holly, and Pavel; you're up!

Pavel healed me right? I think that was his action...

Sorry, I've been busy and only checking in once a day or so

Is there an area where Pavel can cast Faerie fire and get 3 or more spiders without getting his friends> If there is, he does so
(Ref save DC 13 or attacks on them get advantage)

If not, Pavel will throw a sling stone at the small spider by Holly
sling: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 for damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

And the great dice rolls just carry on :-(

GM Notes:

You could get both big spiders the big spider that hasn't been blown away, plus the two small ones in front of Holly and the one small one in front of Corson.

4d20 ⇒ (16, 16, 17, 18) = 67

Holy balls. Sorry, I guess you're all fated to die on the altar of the RNG.

Pavel casts a spell that spreads soft-glowing flames in the area, but the spiders all manage to keep from getting marked! EDIT: Forgot one was asleep. That one's glowing now. Yay...?

The spiders keep up their assault!

Small vs Corson: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
/facepalm
CON DC 12: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Phew.

Small vs Holly: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Large vs Holly: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11, Damage: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
OMG THIS IS IT THIS IS THE TURNAROUND

Small vs Narnel: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21, Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
CON: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Corson and Narnel suffer minor bites, but the team's defense is much more solid overall. Meanwhile, the wind-blasted spider scrambles to its feet and approaches. Since standing costs half its movement, it has to use the Dash action to reach Corson again, so no attack this round.

Party up! We're basically just alternating between party and spiders at this point, so everybody can post now.
