Sanitarium: where your fears are my playthings

Recruitment

You sit up quickly, your eyes wide taking in everything around you. your ears thunder with the hammer of your heart beating rapidly, like one thousand horses stampeding. You notice that your body is covered in sweat...well, you hope it is sweat.
Your eyes adjust to the darkness, or rather the limited amount of light that streams in from a small slit in the wall above you, casting a faint white light into your room. No, not a room, a cell.

you sigh and move your hands to wipe your face. Your hands feel heavy, clunky. you look down and see two iron bands attached to your wrists. Strange glowing runes, shifting from red to yellow to white to blue and back again dance upon the surface. You stare at the shackles, and see that not only are the colors dancing, but the runes themselves change shape.

You swallow, only to feel another iron band lightly choking your neck. you can tell without seeing that this collar also has similar runes. Looking at the rest of your body, you see that around your ankles you see two more iron bands with the same dancing runes.

Grasping at the shackles on your wrists, you already know how it will go. The dont move from your wrists, but they also are not attached to each other or to a wall. they just wrap around your limbs.

You look about the room now, your sanctuary. It is small, cramped, and smells horrible. Just over 6 feet in height, 7 feet long and 5 feet wide, it leaves little to the imagination. Coughing, you look down and see two buckets in opposite corners. One is filled with a foul smelling liquid and dark brown lumps...and the other one looks like it is used as a chamber bucket.

Suddenly, a scream fills the room. It takes your mind a moment to realize that it is you screaming, but you are not the only one screaming. Other screams, moans, howls, can be heard on the other side of the large iron door that allows someone entry to the room. Outside, you hear louder yells, someone screams NO, NOT ME! NO! NOOOOOOOOO! you then hear a faint wet thud, and the scream is silenced.

Your shackles suddenly flare blue, blinding you! you blink, but you feel sleepy, content, and unconsciousness creeps up on you, causing you to fall back onto the soiled hay that is your bed.
Panic fills your mind, as a surge of strength cuts through the desire to sleep. Frantically you look around...There! you reach up and stick your dirty finger into your mouth and bite hard, drawing blood! the pain clears your mind further, allowing you to remember one thing. One thing that you hope will remind you of who you are, and why you are here. As you write, awareness begins to fade, your movements are lethargic, wooden, and finally limp.
But, as unconsciousness over takes you, you sigh and let it flow over you, knowing now that you just laid a breadcrumb to follow.

Your Name.

seth86, looks like an interesting character.

Well, i hope it picks up interest. I like the idea of a smart orc with a smart black blade :P

I'll give this a whirl.

I am intrigued....I will draw something up this week.

Thank you for running.

This is Dorian.

I wonder if you would all this little--harmless--fella?

Unfortunately, my laptop died, so I am using my phone.
As creating a character by phone--well, we know--I am hoping that you wouldn't mind a retread?
I am fond of the duo, so I would make any adjustments needed.

Thank you.

Greetings Twiggy! :)

I played Gyro in our game that died

Definite dot. What kind of alignments are you looking for?

Hi Seth!

Hope to game with you again.
I do miss the goblin...lol.

Cucumbertree: any.

Tinder....hmmm. a goblin would make this..

Blood of Dragons Long ago, your ancestors' blood mixed with that of dragons. Choose one of the following: gain a +1 trait bonus on Perception checks, gain low-light vision, or gain a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against effects that cause sleep or paralysis.

Bonus CMD Grapple (2x)
Bonus CMD Trip (2x)

Bonus Feats At 2nd level and every 3 levels thereafter, a brawler gains a bonus combat feat in addition to those gained from normal advancement. These bonus feats must be ones that affect or improve her defenses or melee attacks. The brawler must meet the prerequisites of the selected bonus combat feat. Upon reaching 5th level and every 3 levels thereafter, a brawler can choose to learn a new bonus combat feat in place of a bonus combat feat she has already learned. In effect, the brawler loses the bonus combat feat in exchange for the new one. The old feat cannot be one that was used as a prerequisite for another feat, prestige class, or other ability. A brawler can only change one feat at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the feat at the time she gains a new bonus combat feat for the level.

Brawler's Cunning (Ex) If the brawler's Intelligence score is less than 13, it counts as 13 for the purpose of meeting the prerequisites of combat feats.

Brawler's Flurry (Ex) Starting at 2nd level, a brawler can make a brawler's flurry as a full-attack action. When doing so, a brawler has the Two-Weapon Fighting feat when attacking with any combination of unarmed strikes, weapons from the close fighter weapon group, or weapons with the "monk" special feature. She does not need to use two different weapons to use this ability. A brawler applies her full Strength modifier to her damage rolls for all attacks made with brawler's flurry, whether the attacks are made with an off-hand weapon or a weapon wielded in both hands. A brawler can substitute disarm, sunder, and trip combat maneuvers for unarmed attacks as part of brawler's flurry. A brawler with natural weapons can't use such weapons as part of brawler's f lurry, nor can she make natural weapon attacks in addition to her brawler's flurry attacks. At 8th level, the brawler gains use of the Improved Two- Weapon Fighting feat when using brawler's flurry. At 15th level, she gains use of the Greater Two-Weapon Fighting feat when using brawler's flurry. You can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action. When doing so, you may make one additional attack, as if using the Two-Weapon Fighting feat. These attacks can be any combination of unarmed strikes, weapons from the close fighter weapon group or monk weapons. You may substitute any of these attacks for a disarm, sunder or trip combat maneuver. You cannot use Brawler's Flurry with natural weapons.

Low-Light Vision (Ex) You can see x2 as far as humans in low illumination. Characters with low-light vision have eyes that are so sensitive to light that they can see twice as far as normal in dim light. Low-Light Vision is color vision. A spellcaster with low-light vision can read a scroll as long as even the tiniest candle flame is next to her as a source of light. Characters with low-light vision can see outdoors on a moonlit night as well as they can during the day.

Maneuver Training (Ex) A brawler can select combat maneuvers to receive additional training. You gain +1 to CMB and CMD to Trip combat maneuvers.

Martial Flexibility (Ex) The brawler can use a move action to gain the benefit of a combat feat he doesn't possess. This effect lasts for 1 minute. The brawler must otherwise meet all the feat's prerequisites. He can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 4. The brawler can use this ability again before the duration expires in order to replace the previous combat feat with another choice. If a combat feat has a daily use limitation, any uses of that combat feat while using this ability count toward that feat's daily limit. At later levels, when he gains multiple feats through this ability, the brawler can use those feats to meet the prerequisites of other feats he gains with this ability. Doing so means he cannot replace a feat currently fulfilling another's prerequisite without also replacing those feats that require it. Each individual feat selected counts toward his daily uses of this ability.

Martial Training (Ex) A brawler counts her total brawler levels as both fighter levels and monk levels for the purpose of qualifying for feats. She also counts as both a fighter and a monk for feats and magic items that have different effects based on whether the character has levels in those classes (such as Stunning Fist and a monk's robe). This ability does not automatically grant feats normally granted to fighters and monks based on class level, namely Stunning Fist.

Vagabond Child (urban) (Disable Device) You grew up among the outcasts and outlaws of your society, learning to forage and survive in an urban environment. Select one of the following skills - Disable Device, Escape Artist, or Sleight of Hand. You gain a +1 trait bonus on that skill, and it is always a class skill for you.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency A brawler is proficient with all simple weapons plus the handaxe, short sword, and weapons from the close fighter weapon group. She is proficient with light armor, and shields (except tower shields).

Tindertwig begins rubbing his hands together.

Rippit, agrees Dirtbag.

Tindertwig and dirtbag: goblin ranger
Stomper Haskson: human brawler
fireskorn: orc magus

Dots for interest:
Deevor
Dorian Grey
hedwick the worldly

ill keep recruitment open til Friday this week.

Apologies, but the Goblin is me.

what day/night will you be running this? And are the starting traits in addition to any racial traits you might have? What level will we most likely max out at?

How would you feel about a gunslinger drow? Part of an old line of gunslingers, but he was captured decades ago or was it centuries? He's been here a long time, and doesn't remember much else besides the feel of a gun in his hand.

Is the gunslinger class a possibility in this setting ot should I look to something different? I'm very intrigued bt rhe intro and your idea.

Dorian: ok. My mistake. No worries.

Voodoomonkey:its pbp, so its all day. Yes.for levels....hmmm. idk.

Keltor:sure. Base drow. Kind of like a jason bourne surrealness.

Sorry, I am new to playing online...if you want to discount me all together that's cool...but Im not hip on all the abbreviations and formats of online play but I am willing to play an AAsamir cleric if I know what sort of time frame I'm working with, I work during the day til about 3 pm central and have Thursday/Friday off...

I'm very intrigued. If this is open until end of the day tomorrow, I can hopefully draw something up; I understand if you'd rather get started quickly, though!

As far as a character, I've had an idea for some time for an asura- or oni-spawn tiefling monk who's trying to redeem himself from his ancestors' failings (either a divine accident as the asura, or a kami turned sour as an oni). This could be a good spot for that, perhaps, as he wakes up to a name and a vague sense of uneasiness. Alternatively, a Tortured Crusader Paladin trying to maintain sanity against the darkness all around (and within) him.

No problem. I wont start the game until tuesday

I will have him leveled up by then...

Are you ok with him as is, other than, leveling to 3rd?

Here's Loup Blanc's submission--after debating over options, I ended up going with a blasty sorcerer who's main games are fire damage and being absolutely covered in tattoos. I didn't do equipment because I wasn't sure whether you wanted us to do that ahead of time or not--he'd presumably start with his tattooed divine symbol (100 gp), but beyond that just an armored kilt and a greataxe is all he really needs. I can try and come up with a full list if you want, though.

Fire!Fire!Hehehe!

Rippit!, croaks a worried-sounding toad.

Silver Crusade

Is this a dead project? I have been working on this guy in case you are still thinking about doing this...I haven't ever done play by post before but if you are doing this and will give me a try, I would love to be involved...Its been a really rough weekend so this is a way-late submission....so I'm not holding my breath if you wanna go on to the crazy-house without me. Either way, thanks for posting this , as it gave me a chance to delve into online player creation...Happy Bouncing in your respective rubber rooms!

is Synthesis Summoner and/or Samurai ok?

Hey guys. I got behind on some stuff at home and couldnt get to this. I will have game thread up later today though

I had a rather interesting character, that might be well suited to such a campaign. He would be introduced as a chaotic neutral fighter 1/cleric 2 (of Lamashtu).

Canvy Mandrain's Background:

Canvy Mardrain was a member of the military in Forcastle Watch. He is an honorable man with a distinguished military career, making the rank of Sargent. He has always shown remarkable common sense for a fighter, though not greatly intelligent. He has several commendations and medals for bravery, taking the lead into affrays, although many thought him reckless in fights, he continued to be admired and respected both within and outside the force. The town might even have bestowed minor awards for his defense of the town.
It all went wrong after he led a mission against the knolls of Cairn Drathfell, to clear the ground of the gathering horde. The mission itself was a success, however since then Canvy has never been the same. In his recklessness he led the attack on the dread Witch Heirone Cutterbuck, Acolyte of Lamushtu, , but it went badly wrong for Canvy and an evil curse was delivered to Canvy's soul as the last breaths of life left that accursed witch. Those who saw the purple wrath of the witches curse envelope Canvy saw how close to death he came, with both the physical wounds bleeding into the soil and the supernatural eating into and draining his soul and life. Those who saw the fight saw the ghastly green breath of death leave the witch and encase Canvy before he fell. It was only with the constant effort from the priests of Sanarae that weeks latter he was brought back to life, or as normal a life as he will have from now on.

It was several months later that he was demobbed from the military, the stories are shrouded in mystery. Rumors have it that several times leading his men he madly and recklessly took them into situations that left many more dead or injured than would have been acceptable. His decisions were more and more irrational. Yet despite that, he is rational and lucid for 99% of the time, and his superiors had to think long and hard before medically retiring him from service.

Since then, the bottle has seen more of him than it should, he now searches to join adventurers and start fighting again. It was whilst telling the stories of conflict to any who would listen for the price of a drink, that he was introduced to our lady of madness by a cleric of Lamashtu. That began his conversion into the cult, secretly he has drowned deeper and deeper into Lamashtu's godly devine powers, until today in his other moments he is a total follower.

It was several months later after being demobbed from the military, that he came here about 9 months ago. He arrived and got employment with the local sheriff, but after a few run ins, mainly regarding his drinking habits, he overheard a group of young adventurers talking and introduced himself above his drunken haze. He offers to join and help them, as he is sure the tales of his past exploits will impress them and they will let him accompany them on a worthwhile adventure.

He still looks to join adventurers to sate his madness, lust for blood and craving for companionship.

Quite how he arrived at the sanatorium, is in the dark part of his mind, the part that cannot be breached or brought to light. If only he could remember...

If this guy is of interest, then I'll flesh out his stats properly.

Sounds interesting Deevor.
