Hi forum-goers!
With so many new people joining the forums due to the humble bundle, I will be running a game of Hell's Rebels for new people who have recently purchased the humble bundle and are maybe new to Pathfinder or to tabletop roleplaying altogether.
This play-by-post is open to anyone who has recently purchased the humble bundle and is either:
- New to the pathfinder system; or
- New to TTRPG gaming altogether
As the first three chapters of Hell's Rebels is attached to the Bundle, I'm hoping that the players will get a chance to play the campaign by play-by-post and then take it away and GM it in person with your friends/family having already experienced it and having a feel for it. Given this, I do request that if you make it into this Play-By-Post that you avoid reading ahead until after we've finished up the campaign.
Understanding how delayed downloading on the website is at the moment, I will keep the application process for this game open for quote some time, to give everyone a chance to get books and start having a read through. In addition, I'm happy for people to discuss character creation in this thread so that new players can get their heads around how it works :)
Some quick notes:
For creating your character, the only resources you are allowed to use are those that are available in the bundle:
- Core Rule Book
- Advanced Class Guide
- Advanced Players Guide
- Inner Sea World Guide
- Strategy Guide
- Ultimate Magic
- Ultimate Campaign
- Ultimate Combat
In addition, you should get a copy of the Hell's Rebels Player's Guide, which is available free from this website.
We will be using the "20 Point Buy" to generate your character stats, as this is the standard format for playing Pathfinder Society (PFS) games. This way, if you wish to play PFS in the future you will be well equipped.
Your character needs two traits, one of which must be from the Player's Guide.
Starting gold is 150GP for each player's character.
Your character starts at level 1.
Given that people may be new to the world of Golarian (the setting for pathfinder) and in particular Cheliax (the particular nation that this Adventure Path is set in), I will be endeavouring to provide links and suggestions for forming your characters backstory. The Hell's Rebels Player Guide really is an excellent starting point for understanding the campaign, but if you have any other questions feel free to ask away.
Welcome again to Paizo, and good luck with Pathfinder!

For those having a tough time finding your way around the website, here is a link to Hell's Rebels Players Guide. Another useful resource is the Pathfinder Reference Document -- it has most everything in the Available Resources list in a handy web format for easier searching/referencing. Finally, check out the sticky threads in the Online Campaigns forum for some helpful guides on play-by-post as well as some browser extensions to make your life easier. Have fun everyone!

Hello there! My name's Caleb and I just purchased the bundle--I've been involved in role-playing games for many years now, with the most experience I've had in D&D 3.5. I've been wanting to try Pathfinder for a while now, but because I have so many of the 3.5 manuals (and I usually GM campaigns instead of playing in them), the usefulness of having so many resources as opposed to having very little by switching over to Pathfinder was enough to keep me with 3.5.
But oh my, when I saw the bundle, I knew I had to give Pathfinder a try and I am so glad I did. Though I haven't been able to download many of the books due to the server business, what I've seen in the Core Rulebook is great and I'm excited to GM the system. But I would also love to play in it as well. And so here I am haha XD
So, all that to say, I'd love to play in this! I had a few questions, mainly what the "application process" as you described would be, and any other info you could give me on the campaign and how the play-by-post would work would be fantastic.
Thanks so much!

Hi Caleb, welcome! In many ways you should find pathfinder pretty intuitive coming off 3.5, it's sort of the next step in that progression.
So, all that to say, I'd love to play in this! I had a few questions, mainly what the "application process" as you described would be, and any other info you could give me on the campaign and how the play-by-post would work would be fantastic.
Good questions!
(1)Application Process: For Play-By-Posts on the Paizo forums, the GM will give a set of character creation requirements, and often ask for some kind of backstory. I'm running another recruitment for this campaign at the moment, and I'm requiring applicants to answer a few questions to get a feel for their roleplaying style. Players will then build a character sheet and a character backstory and submit it to the forum as an Alias. The GM chooses the number of players he wants from the pool of characters, and away we go. Some play by posts can be very popular (i'm looking at you Way Of The Wicked) and can wind up with 50+ applications for a 5 player game.
For this game, I'll be looking to have five players, and if I get enough interested people early, I may just close applications so that people don't get disappointed.
(2)Info on the campaign: Hell's Rebel is an adventure path, which is a campaign from level 1 to between level 13 and level 20. They're released in 6 parts, one chapter per month, and each campaign has a different feel. I've played or run a few of them and most are very well written.
Hell's Rebels his set in the city of Kintargo in the diabolical empire of Cheliax. Cheliax is ruled by Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune. The country is a decaying empire that has seen much better days, but the nobility of House Thrune hold tightly to their power and impose strict law across the country. However, recently rebellion has been stirring through out the nation, in part prompted by a group of religious crusaders known as the Glorious Reclamation. The Glorious Reclamation are followers of the Goddess Iomedae (google her). The recently recovered an artefact of significance to their deity by defeating an order of the Hellknights (the harsh law keepers of Cheliax), and in doing so have started staring up discord throughout Cheliax. In response, the nobility of thrune have put the nation into a state of martial law.
At the start of the adventure, the player's characters find themselves assembling - each for their own reasons - at a public protest against Thrune and their martial rule in the city of Kintargo.
(3) How Play-by-Post works: There's a well regarded forum post here which runs through a lot of the basics of play-by-post, but typically the games run like this: There is a gameplay thread and a discussion thread, which serve as the in character and out of character game. In the gameplay thread, the GM will present information to the players, and the each of the players have a chance to post their response. Different GM's run at different paces, but typically the posting rate is one post per day. That means the GM will post something, and will wait

Interesting. I'd love to try this, but I think I'd need a little help building a character...I usually build characters with, essentially, custom classes in order to get the concept I have in mind. PFS rules are so much more restrictive than the rules I usually use!
Hi Alyksandrei, welcome! I don't know how much you've read of the Pathfinder books yet, but you'll find that there are a multitude of Archetypes that allow you to narrow down a class so that it closer fits your specific idea for a character. Perhaps this well help you a bit?

Welcome to the fold, and good news, most of your 3.5 books are compatible with pathfinder with very little updating.

@Rhentyl: You can use online resources to create your character. All the OGL content is available on various sites. Though the players guide might be harder to get a hold off with downloads not working. http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ (this might also be unstable due to heavy trafic though), http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ and http://www.archivesofnethys.com/

I've played various games for years now, but I'm new to Pathfinder, never having actually played it. I have however, thoroughly enjoyed the Pathfinder comics by Dynamite.
I'd love to give this a try (and have done some PBP in the past), so I'll give you a thought regarding a character once I have a better feel for the world if that's okay.
Thanks

Gilen Reidford |

Greetings! I'm interested in trying a play-by-post game, and I've wanted to give the Pathfinder system a try for quite a while now. I'm not too familiar with the setting, by which I mean that I know it's high fantasy, so I'm not sure if a viking-esque barbarian suits the world. If it does, I'd like to submit Gilen, a young raider who was left behind by his crew and wants nothing more than to get home. Given the militaristic lock down if the city, I've got a feeling that's going to take some work on his part.

Cool, then i think i'm all set. Printed out the character portfolio so as to have a written record of my char and it's actually confusing a little. A lot of info on there i don't really understand yet. Thankfully tomorrow and tuesday are my day off so i get to read the material i've got and finish it off
Are you planning to run through all 6 modules, or just the 3 in the Humble Bundle?

I'm aiming to hit the first three at a minimum. We'll see after that :)

I've played PF before, and have heavily used d20pfsrd.com, so I know about the Archetypes. The thing is, I've only played one-shots, and when I built characters for those I usually end up using an adaptation of "Custom Characters" (originally for 3.5) that I found online...(if I knew where I'd found it, I'd link to it). So...Not sure if I can build the character I'm envisioning while staying within PFS rules.

Renvil Ratarion |

Renvil Ratarion, the soon-to-be-famous Kintargo playwright, would love to be a part of this game!
I have to get some of the character details updated in the profile here (skills, equipment, etc.); I'll get that updated soon.
Full disclosure: I've played TTRPG, including Pathfinder before, but tabletop only. I'm new to the Humble Bundle and I've never done PBP like this before. I hope you'll consider me in light of that!

Wow, play by post D&D (err Pathfinder)?! I never knew this existed. I will roll a char and follow up when I am done. I am very keen to give this a try.
FW
The son of wealthy merchants, Belthomas of Nix attended the Arcanamirium of Absalom but had difficulty with their Universalist vision; from an early age he was drawn to Evocation and now seeks a mentor to expand his magical knowledge.
A typical Vudrani, his curiosity drives him. Wanderlust has placed his feet upon the path of the unknown and he eagerly looks to a future full of exploration, no matter which trials and tribulations may come.
He is very bright, but otherwise quire ordinary:
Lvl 1 Mage (Evoker): 12/12/12/18/12/12 9HP
His parents have provided him with a tidy amount of coin (900g) and he must set out purchasing supplies. His only question is to how he acquires is arcane bonded amulet...

Ietsuna's monk alias for this. I have been tweaking it for a couple days now, as I read and understand rules better. There are most probably errors in it due to my being new. Let me know if there is.
Armour Class should be 14: 10+1 (Dex) +1(Dodge) +2(Wis misc)

That’s fine, happy to have you!
Another question, would it be alright if I played a tiefling?
Yep, Tieflings are fine, especially in cheliax.

I'd be interested. I've done up a Halfling Rogue here. I should be able to adjust the description easily enough to fit into the campaign.

I've created a char using PCGen v6.04.01 and can export to pdf, but I can't seem to attach the file for your perusal.

I've never used PCGen myself, but other people have talked about an export feature that gives you something in plain text, that's nicely formatted for pasting into your character profile here in the forums. If you poke around enough, I'm sure you can find it, or maybe someone else here knows better the specific steps to do that in the software.

Aleksis |
OK, alias created and draft profile posted. Will clean up and format as I have time, but this should give you the basics. Note the correct spelling of her name (Aleksys) - I'm reusing a character concept, including the name, so there's already an alias from a 5e game I'm in. Thus the variant spelling.

Hello, I would be interested in applying for this game or any others that are run by a separate GM. I played v3.5 many years ago, but can see that there has been a decent number of changes (such as the skill system). Let me know if I should fix something. (For example, does the +1 skill point for favored class apply to 1st level?) I might also make a couple minor changes after I thoroughly read the Player's Guide for the campaign.
