What sorcerer bloodline would you choose?

Advice

I'm theorycrafting a character and need to pick a sorcerer blodline and I'm having trouble choosing one. I'm torn between draconic (claws, wings, energy breath etc, rakasha nice shapeshifitng ability and starsoul this one really really pulls at me because of the flavour text and has some nice abilities for my tastes e.g. aurara nice colour spray style attack and imperious for the capstone abilities). Hard to decide which one though. Anyway this got me thinking do other people have a strong attraction to particular bloodline?

So here's the question if you got one of the sorcerer bloodlines which would you choose based on personal tastes rather than mechanics. That is please don't choose one because it gives you "Ultimate badass killing power" like most seem to base their choices on. Instead tell me which you'd pick because of the flavour text or the nature of the abilities conferred. For me I'm honestly having a hard choice but the 4 that appeal to me in order of preference are . . .

Starsoul
The flavour text is something I love, your born with a desire to bridge the gap between the void between the stars. It gives you the ability to create an shimmering auraura dealing cold damage and I love shifting colour spells. Finally it offers no need to breathe and a lot of night based abilities e.g. see perfectly in darkness and I'm a night owl by nature.

Draconic
I like the whole dragon magic is in your blood and the retractable claws, the wings are a nice flying bonus.

Rakasa
Really I like the shapeshifting assume any humanoid form and while I'd prefer a kitsune this gives me something and there's no kitsune bloodline sniffle. Anyway with shapeshifting spells this falls lower on the table than the draconic one.

Imperious
Nice flavour text your descended from royalty and at 20th level you cease aging (not clear if you still die eventually which would lower the value of this) don't need to eat, drink or SLEEP (all things I like) and are immune to death effects and energy drain (very useful). However this requires you reach 20th level in the class by which point you can probably find other ways to achieve the same results.

So those are the ones I want but choosing one is hard. Starsoul is slightly ahead then draconic and rakasha (if rakasha was kitsune it'd probably be number 1 and it only drops to 3rd because there's plenty of shapeshifting spells) and finally imperious. If pushed . . . I'd probably take starsoul but it hurts to miss out on the others.

Well, if I were you, I would take the Crossblooded Archetype for Starsoul and Draconic. This is by no means a "uber badass power combo", either. In fact, it may very well be the opposite of that in terms of being "OP".

But, for the flavor... well, you are the Star Dragon, of course.

(And while it isn't optimal, its not exactly a bad choice, either)

Mongrel: Now you can be all of those when you need them!

About the "no need for sleep" thing. I think you still need to spend eight hours avoiding mentally taxing tasks if you want to recharge spells. Otherwise Elves would be OP.

For me personally I'd go draconic out of these choices. I feel it's iconic, it opens up a PrC and it allows a versatile array of basic attacks and defenses. Starsoul seems like it would require a lot of strategy to make work and rakshasa just doesn't impress me. Imperious is good for the flavor but the powers are all just about annoying your foes without actually defeating them.

I'm not trying to min-max (or maybe I am a little) but if you're going to be a sorcerer you have to expect some of your fights will be physical and challenging. Draconic IMO gives you the tools to survive these threats from the get go. That's the way I'd go anyway.

Elves sleep.

I really like Fey and Sylvan. Other favorites include Serpentine and Umbral. I like the flavor of all of these, but it's also important to pick something that adds something in gameplay and has spells that you will enjoy using.

Just to be sure everyones clear I'm not asking what I should chose, I'm asking what you would if you got the choice based on the flavour/theme/abilities it grants. That is the you in real life. Some archmage popping earth decided to have a little fun and will grant you one of those bloodlines (bringing with it the ability to use magic if you want).

The 4 I listed are the ones that appeal to me personally, now I want to hear what appeals to you.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My top favourite is Imperious.

Because it means I'm HUMAN. (which is different from merely human) I'm so human that I'm more human than other humans. In fact, I HUMAN so hard I gain magic powers from it. I'm the humanest human who ever humaned.

Second would be Efreeti (Wishcrafter Ifrit archtype) Although I would ask the GM to jigger it to Djinni bloodline instead.
*sing You Ain't Never Had a Friend Like Me* pop culture references would abound in this game...

Third, Harrowed bloodline cos I get to be all dark and mysteeeeeeerious.
Also, seriously, you get your own portable mansion. How cool is that?!

Fourth, the Impossible bloodline. And use mostly pattern, mind affecting and transmutation spells. Expand your MIND man.... *puffs on hookah*

Draconic is my favorite. Big surprise there.

Wait, for ME IRL? Oh then of those 4 DEFINITELY Draconic. Are you kidding me?

*In line at Caribou*
Barista: Next!
Me: I'll have...
*Guy in a suit on earbud cuts in front of me* Gimmie a large Americano
*Claws and wings* Me: BY THE HOARY HOSTS OF HOGGOTH THIS SHALL NOT STAND!!! *shreds 3 piece suit while cutter flees in terror*

Of course any sorcerer bloodline gives you spells that automatically do the same thing, but to be able to proudly say that the blood of DRAGONS runs in my veins? Yes please!

Again clarifying your not limited to the four I like, pick from the entire list of bloodlines available the one or ones with reasons for preference order that appeal to you. Like El-Jefe and Natan did with their preferences of fey and harrowed or efreeti.

Also I've seen all the wishmaster movies that's a disturbing archetype to aim for although I do feel he cheated when he shoved that girl into the rabbit cage.

You would make a character just so you could make pun out of character references? *Slow clap* Bravo my kind of player.

If you're willing to use non-Paizo stuff, there is a Kitsune bloodline with both Bloodrager and Sorcerer variants in the Kitsune Compendium, which just came out last month.

There's a kitsune bloodline? I'll have to take a look at it in the SRD.

In the game I'm playing now, I went Maestro with my kitsune. It's not the most powerful bloodline mechanically, but I didn't want to be another Fey or Serpentine Kitsune. I loved all the flavor text -- Music in the blood -- love of performing -- beguiling voice -- and the perfect voice at 9th level. I'm playing an opera singer who probably has a higher skill level in perform than most bards these days. :)

In real life? I'd have trouble choosing between Raksasa -- shapeshifting, yeah! Arcane -- familiars -- yeah! I don't think I'd go Sylvan, even though I would love a pet tiger, because I'm not that much of a nature girl.

Hmm

I was considering playing a stone mystery oracle with the deafness curse, just so that I could be "stone" deaf.

Hmm

In real life? Undead. Nothing is quite as cool as just going incorporeal and "ghosting" through walls. And I'm really partial to the skeletal arms attack :)

Nobody else likes the Mongrel Mage? Picking and choosing bloodline abilities when you need them, to me, makes that easily by far the best sorcerer to come around in a long time.

I like it a lot but well..the op is mostly going for flavor so while mongrel mage is perfect for someone who isn't sure of what bloodline to pick or want a lot of flexibility...not really what the op is looking for.

As for personal taste, Serpentine Bloodline Between Orochimaru and Voldemort, you have plenty of strong representation of serpentine bloodlines people out there and it's a lot of fun. You can even mind control, magical beasts, monstrous humanoids, animals while transforming into a snake and still able to cast spells (well peak ability but still).

I have a sweet spot for the Dreamspun bloodline or the martyred bloodline, both have some really cool powers.

Do we get ALL of the bloodline powers? 1-20? If so I would either go Verdant or Harrow

Verdant:
Vine whip :D
Never need to eat and I barely need sleep :D
I can be the big shot in rural areas by goin BAM plant growth! Or you make me mad? Watch you crops wither away this year
Instant wound healing, just add roots!
And the capstone even gives me Tophlike tremorsense

Harrow:
Make assailants stop in their tracks confused!
Be better at surviving life!
Free instant stat bonuses!
Free extradimensional mansion that freezes when I walk out the door!
Immunity to curses! DR! Stat bonuses are now infinite!

Not really in the scope of what I was after (how much power you get that is) but if its the capstone abilities that draws you into a blood line that's fine.

Based on flavor of bloodlines I have a few….

Draconic, cuz well dragons. Need I say more?

Starsoul would be also an obvious choice personally. "You come from a line of stargazers and explorers who delved deeply into the darkness beyond the stars. In touching the void, the void touched them, and your mind, spirit, and body yearn to span the gulf between worlds." Yea that sounds like me, minus the whole void touched thing…..

Interestingly, and finally, Infernal. I like the idea personally of having powers granted from a pact with the devil. Especially if those powers are not used for evil and malicious purposes. I enjoyed the character and development of Spawn…
