Paizo is pleased to announce the introduction of the Pathfinder Companion, a bimonthly 32-page book for players and Game Masters alike.
Each volume explores a major theme in the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting, with expanded regional gazetteers, new player character options, and organizational overviews to help players flesh out their character backgrounds and to provide players and Game Masters with new sources for campaign intrigue.
In August, we'll launch the series with Pathfinder Companion: Second Darkness, which serves as a player's guide to the third Pathfinder Adventure Path, including an overview of Varisia’s northern frontier, including never-before-revealed information about the mysterious elves of the Mierani Forest and the haunted ruins of Celwynvian, as well as a complete gazetteer of the scoundrel city of Riddleport.
We want everyone to give Pathfinder Companion a try, so we'll be sending the first volume FREE along with subscriber copies of Pathfinder #13, the first installment of the Second Darkness Adventure Path.
In October, we've got Pathfinder Companion: Elves of Golarion, which provides a comprehensive overview of elven societies in the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting.
December will see the release of Pathfinder Companion: Osirion, Land of Pharaohs, which provides a comprehensive overview of Osirion from its star-crossed ancient history, to its treacherous modern politics. A complete gazetteer of the nation’s teeming, monument-laden capital of Sothis provides a great resource for player characters from—and for Game Masters running campaigns set in—the pulp-inspired nation of Osirion.
Each 32-page volume is priced at $9.99, and an ongoing subscription is available. Subscribers will be able to download a PDF of each volume as it ships—a $6.99 value—for FREE! And, as always, if you have other Paizo subscriptions, you can combine them to save money on shipping.
Don't forget that Pathfinder Adventure Path subscribers get the Pathfinder Advantage—a 15% discount from MSRP—even on subscription products, so you'll save even more.

But if you're REALLY impatient, you can take a look at the product page...
You made me subscribe. Where's my tag. Hehe... j/k...
Me thought, I heard a voice cry, "sleep no more, Gary!
Gary does murder sleep" the innocent sleep...

We want everyone to give Pathfinder Companion a try, so we'll be sending the first volume FREE along with subscriber copies of Pathfinder #13, the first installment of the Second Darkness Adventure Path.
I just added a Companion Subscription, but I only need one copy. How is Paizo going to handle people with a subscription to both products in August?

We'll send you one copy, and it will be free.

Oh hell... That all looks so good, you have me worried now.
My gut tells me that this means you will be switching to 4th Edition. (Readers take note: I have no proof or insider information, but it would fit with my cycle of luck - for lack of a better phrase.)
And to be clear, I won't hold it against you if you do. But it is the kind of "tasty tidbit" that usually proceeds a bitter beer face for me.

Vic says they still haven't even decided yet. So thre's still hope. I think Companion and the Gamemastery name change were coming anyway.

I've added a subscription, but it doesn't show up under My Subscriptions...
Yeah, the list of possible subscriptions for that page is hard-coded. There used to be a comment in the code to the effect of, "Yeah, hard-coded, whatever. Wake me when we come up with a new subscription every month."
Heh.
PS: And now I go back to sleeeeep.

Well, I hope that you are wrong. I would like them to stick with 3.5 for a while longer (say, 2 or 3 more APs.). But if they change, I will stick it out with them.

I have faith, having seen what our friends here at Paizo can do for sheer production value and customer service, that whatever choice they make will be the one that provides for the best stories.
Also, signed on for the Companion. Because, like I said - Paizo's got Production Value, so it's sure to rock.

I´ve just subscribed to it but the first installment has appeared in my cart with the rest of the products to be sent with my pathfinder 7. I hope this is a mistake and this will not delay the rest of my subscriptions till august. By the way, very good idea!

Now this is what I'm talking about when I'm talking about player products. Nice. Small, simple, and useful. You've got a future subscriber (assuming 3.5).

Two questions: I just ordered a Pathfinder Companion subscription, but it doesn't show up yet in my subscriptions list -- is that normal?
Second question: If I now choose to have my products shipped with my Pathfinder Modules (or with my Pathfinder Companion, once that option is available), does that mean that I would be getting my orders bimonthly? And would that mean that I would be saving shipping costs, since I'm getting them sent here to Europe?
Thanks!

I can field this question.. The Tag for the Companion Subscription hasn't been coded yet. We subscribers will get one, but not until Monday (or until Gary Teter gets some rest).

This is -really- cool. The idea I'm getting is that the Companion is similar to the gazetteers we've seen in PF like Magnimar and Varisia, but "blown up."
You have my vote ... err ... money! :)
*** Question: Does this mean that the free player guides, as we have seen them, will no longer be an option?
*** How will this be different from the Pathfinder Chronicles? Like Into the Darklands, etc.

The free Player's Guide will no longer exist.
I'm not sure about your other question. Chronicles is the AP. My guess is the background materials are being moved to the Companion to make room for the sidetrek stuff in Chroncles, starting in Second Darkness.

Chronicles are not actually the AP, they are a line of supplementary books about the world such as the deities, the darklands, and absalom. I believe the companions wil be better for players than the chronicles (not exactly player oriented).

And where will be the difference between the companions and the gazetteer books?
Okay, the gazetteers have more pages, but is there any thematic difference?
The products that have been announced until now seem to fit into both lines (like books that focus on certain regions in both lines for example).
I don't really care as long as the content is good (I have no doubts about this), but there must be a reason for making these differences and I'd really like to know.
Are the companions aimed at players in the first place (and the gazetteers at DMS)?

Yeah, I'd also like to know what exactly will be the difference between the Chronicles and Companion lines...
| Ross Byers RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32 |
Sorry. I misread the question. (I had just woken up. Sorry.)
Pathfinder Companion is a Bi-monthly softcover book with a set page number.
Pathfinder Chronicles is a catch-all for products in the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting that are not part of the other lines. They have no fixed release schedule, no fixed page length, and are not even always books. Also, keep in mind that some Chronicles products were announced before Companion was decided on. Some Chronicles products would probably be Companions if they were announced today. (The same way the GameMastery Modules aren't getting renamed till July.)
I think Absinth is right that Gazeteers are aimed more at DMs.

Chronicles involves maps and the bigger more general books... it looks like each companion is on one topic (like how the gazeteer is the whole contenant or two, these will be more regional based- or how the campaign setting will talk about all the races the elves compainion will have more detailed information on just elves.)
