Pathfinder Battles Preview: Something Evil This Way Comes

Three figures to show off this week from the upcoming Legends of Golarion set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic miniatures! This time I wanted to show off some of the set's more... eeevil antagonists, in particular those associated with my personal favorite nation of the Pathfinder world: CHELIAX!

Yes, the great Empire of Cheliax, ruled by an aristocracy of devil-binding loons and kept safe by the march of the highly regimented Hellknights. We've already released one Hellknight in the Skull & Shackles set, but for Legends of Golarion I wanted to juice up the faction with three new models.

Here we have the Scourge Hellknight, based on one of our very best Hellknight illustrations. This fine gentleman makes for a great fully armored flail-focused fighter, or as the backbone of your Cheliax-faction group of Pathfinder Society characters. The Order of the Scourge roots out crime all over Cheliax, and when they sentence you to lashes, they're not talking about seductive blinking. This Medium figure is slated at the uncommon rarity.

While most Hellknights tend to be warriors of various stripes, their many orders also feature large numbers of arcane spellcasters ready to apply their unique talents to rooting out chaos in the empire. Here we have a Hellknight Signifer pictured mid-casting, cleansing enemies of Cheliax with a nerve-wracking spell. This figure has an amazing sense of flow and dimensionality to it, and it really shines in hand. This Medium figure is at the uncommon rarity.

This Thrune Agent finishes off the Cheliax trio in Legends of Golarion. His heavy mace suggests that he might be a cleric, or at least a big fan of sickening splatters of blood from the heads of his enemies. With the symbol of Cheliax imprinted on his cloak, the Thrune Agent makes a good cleric of Asmodeus, the perfect companion to a group of Hellknights literally out looking for trouble. The Thrune Agent, a Medium figure, is slated at the uncommon rarity.

Last week I promised to reveal something we didn't show off at Gen Con, and I'm sorry to say that illnesses and preparation for PAX Prime (which kicked off today here in Seattle) got in the way of taking more photographs of Legends of Golarion. A thousand apologies for that. I'll make it up to you next week.

No, in fact, I think I'll make it up to you right now with a SUPER EARLY SNEAK PEEK at one of my favorite figures from the NEXT set, Wrath of the Righteous, which is currently scheduled for a December release. Keep in mind that this is a production sculpt shot, so some minor details may change, but I wanted you to see just how awesome this set is going to be.

So join me in a visit to the future as I reveal some shots of the demon lord Baphomet, designed by Wayne Reynolds and sculpted to perfection by our partners at WizKids!

Look for more information on the Wrath of the Righteous set next week, when I'll also finally get a chance to show off some brand new Legends of Golarion figures as well!

Until then, I remain...

Those look mighty nice, I'm impressed a Wrath set will be out by December.

Ha, I believe that Hell Knight is the cover of Hell's Pawns.

Between these and the couple in S&S I should be fine on Chelish minis for a bit. (unless I got a specific Count and his body guard)

Love Baphomet and his classic heavy metal album cover look \m/.

Making me wait until December, torturer!!

I will be honest that I really, really hope that Wrath of the Righteous gets delayed, because between S&S, Legends and that it will be really difficult to manage everything.

But back to topic...

All three figures are great for evil bad guys when you need them. The looks and the rarity are good for all three of them. I can definitely see uses for them all.

As for Baphomet, let me just say... Wicked.

Hell yes!

The Scourge Hellknight would be an awesome proxy for a Death Knight.

I think there was a delay with the S&S set, which explains the long gap between Shattered-star and the Gen Con release. I do hope it manages to normalize at 3 per year. The 3 in 5 months is going to be tight.

I'll admit, my first thought when I saw the Baphomet close-up was "They're making Jar-Jar?"

I think it's the grin.

Baphomet looks incredibly metal.

Now we have the prefect bulking out for hellknights and cheliax. 4 seems plenty with the shattered star extra. All of these are great and the common look once again triumphs in my mind, paizo/wizkids have done a great job in unifying the look of things. This is looking to be a great set - dare I say better than the last? Then you reveal...

Baphomet. Love, love, love the more traditional look. Scale, big tick; pose, awesome; creepiness, hell yeah (maybe abyss yeah is more suited). So much better than just a big minotaur, although a big fiendish looking minotaur would be good. However the close up of his face makes him appear a little like a startled goat in appearance rather than a cunning, conniving, lord of chaos. I almost have to agree with Cintra he does have a certain jar-jar look going. The first shot, however is amazing. If this is any indication of what's to come I want this set - make it come out now, December is like too far. Oh and when do we see Deskari?

Can you stop trying to "Push the limits of large"? That's a huge mini on a 2" base.

The Hellknight is gorgeous.

Baphomet looks cool, and he's standing next to a gug. What's the one on the left side? Holding a hammer. It's not Koschtchie is it?

I think that's the Troll Champion.

What will be chase figure, like the skeletal and green and blue dragons, for the WOR set?

I'm hoping for a Shemhazian, the only Gargantuan demon in the three bestiaries. (Though I doubt we'll get that piece of information anytime soon)

Not that I don't love my oversized Large figures (and my accidental mob of Gugs), but it's a bit off-putting when the Larges keep getting larger, to the point they're basically just Huge figures. I'm on the fence. I like the Baphomet posted quite a bit, but it looks like it's going to be as big as the Karzoug Statue from RotR. Now compare that to the "Large" figures like the RotR Yeti or the first Troll from H&M. I don't know. I just don't think it's fair to class them in the same group.

But I also get that this is an evolving product. Maybe the Troll was a bit on the small side. Maybe the Troll Champion was a bit too tall. The product evolves, problems are identified and sometimes they're learned from in future releases. I guess all I'm getting at is that it's pretty tall for a Large figure. I'm sure I won't be complaining once I have it in hand later this year.

Yeah, it was confirmed as the demon lord Deskari at Gencon. I hoped for a Shemhazian as well, but if the mini for Deskari can live up to the artwork it will an awesome piece. Can always hope we get a Shemhazian late I suppose - maybe a special Demon evolution set - Shemhazian, Nalfeshnee sort of thing. I'd buy a couple of those.

Yep it's an unpainted troll champion from the Shattered Star set. I'm really hoping we'll get 1-2 more demon lords in the set as well.

Well, I hope that devils will get a bit more love before there is another demon set/encounter pack/etc. There seems to be a bit of an imbalance between the two.

Although these larger "minis" do make great appearing figures, I also have the same concern.

Then again, "pushing the limits of Large" in this manner gets us sculpts that otherwise we wouldn't get expect as case incentives and as part of evolution packs due to the prohibitive cost of Huge minis. If the oversized larges really upset you that much, there are commercialy available bases for huge figures, just re base it.

If they can afford to do it as a large that's too big, I find it very hard to believe they couldn't afford the difference in plastic to make it a huge (since it's just a base difference).

Huge bases fit in the boost boxes, so just make it 3 small or medium and one large or huge.

Then you have to make a shell for huge of course, but the skull and shackles set had plenty of shaped large shells, so making more for larges of different shapes is clearly find.

I think that'd work fine.

People would cherry pick the Huges. In any event, the "problem" here is that Large is a very diverse size category in terms of height. Baphomet is not taller than the Karzoug statue. The H&M Troll is way too small on account of that being the very first set we did. I guarantee there will be Larges in this set that people will think are too small. Like I said, Large is a weird size category.

I wonder if Aroden will be in this?

I'm just surprised they are doing another mini set so close to the AP it is in. I thought Eric said never again after Shattered Star! :P

In this instance I have no issue with the pushing of limits - it's Baphomet! Although I have no issue with pushing the limit of largeanyway, I agree with Leo_Negri, without the limit pushing there are minis we just wouldn't see. Plus as Erik states there are those odd sized things that straddle the large/huge and large/medium border, to date I have been pretty happy with the scale (with the excpetion of the aforementioned troll, but still have a place for him). The limit pushing only seems to bugs me on medium and small minis (although the rate in H&M was a scale error I believe), can't tell you why.

Besides if I plonk Baphomet down on the table I want him to look grand!

As an aside when do weget to see Mr Reynolds artwork the figure comes from? That I need to see.

All three of the new figures look wonderful I can't wait to get my hands on them. As for Baphomet; I figure I can rebase it if need be. But in the end, it is a great looking sculpt and I want it. :-)

I still wish this set would be pushed back to allow some of us more time to recover funds enough to buy a full case. :-(

When one of the later issues of WotR gets its cover updated I'm guessing. So about a month before that issue releases.

I suppose they could cherry pick them, though I can already do that with the runelords huges. It's not hard to find the golem lol.

I hope that there will be many demons in this!

Looks great.

You know what else is a 'Legend of Golarion'?
A certain black-winged species native to Cheliax...
just sayin ;)

You folks are doing an amazing job with these sets! I freaking LOVE the Baphomet statue. I may get a couple of those, and stash one in a friend's cereal box or something:)

Sheesh, people. Griping about large larges. Are you kidding me? Would you rather drop $25 for a huge or ~$10 for a large that's almost a huge? I got my troll champion for $3 on ebay and I couldn't be happier with it. If you're so bent out of shape about it, why don't you center the mini over a grid square so it covers close to a 3x3 area and call it a huge, or as others have suggested, rebase it? I like the large larges.

I also agree that the larges are getting too large. Not only do they skew the sizes of the other miniatures I have, they are starting to get so big that they won't even fit in the storage containers I use. Instead of one "huge" large, I'd much rather have two "smaller" larges that could fit in that same space.
I also do not rebase. If I wanted to have to do any work to the miniatures, I wouldn't be buying prepainted.
