Hey! I wanted to let you know I read the post/guide, and I thought it all sounded really informational and helpful. Awesome job, seriously. I think it's great to give back to the community in this way, and hopefully help out people looking to get their start. PbP could always use more great GMs. Hopefully your words and advice will guide others and help them get lucky enough to find their own PbP groups that are even 1/100th as good as ours :)

Hey guys, if you're interested, I've updated Wilmannator's Guide to Successful Play-by-Post Recruitment. Painlord also PM'd me (what is it about us that attracts stalkers?)

Big changes are:

  • I have included Jack's suggestion under the newly titled "Party composition" section. Thanks Jack!
  • I have added an "introduce and promote" section (can't believe I missed it, really). I think it ws so important, I couldn't imagine a GM not doing it! Anyway, in deference to its importance, I made it #2.
  • More fleshing out of "keep the thread alive" to include liking what other players do and a very interesting suggestion from Painlord.
  • An explanation on the Golden Rule (have fun), about improving or ending it if you're not having fun.

If you'd like to re-read, feel free! Otherwise, thanks again for your contributions and feedback. Legends.

Very Nice!

And we get stalked because we are amazing. and humble. Totally humble.

and amazing.

Lol.

It's probably ego...how could you possibly be superstars and not have me?! ;)

Ha! Methinks someone wants to be recruited... ;-)

The one and only mr. painlord?

To what do we owe this honor, sir?

Are you joining these adventures and shenanigans?

Lol.

Just joining in the snark and gaming, two of my favorite things. You guys have it good here, no doubt. Organization, passion, fun...all the good things.

Aw shucks! Careful, it does get mushy around here sometimes. Especially around the holidays...

Played a game on Roll20 last night using Google Hangout for voice instead of typing - what a cool interface. That was a very fun experience. If Jyri can pull an all-nighter, might be fun to run through although I think that the GM learning curve might be steep for the technology.

Roll20 can be good, but I found that the line-of-sight was very distracting when last I played. Would be happy to run or play one of those games! I think we mentioned it before, but there were too many "no" players. I'm up for a 4 player adjustment, though. We could perhaps play with a different set of characters even (or - gasp - not PFS).

I'd be up for trying it. We'd just need to figure out logistics

If anyone has some time for light reading Roll20 Guide

Liberty's Edge

It would be fun, but I would need a weekend sans the family. I'll let you know if such occasion would be happening anytime soon...

There are multiple reasons why we all play PbP. Ironically that was the exact condition that freed me up to play last night.

Male Human Engineer/4 (ding!)

I'm in the same boat. A PFS Scenario would be awesome, primarily because we could start and finish theoretically in one session. It would have to be a time that I could set aside, or have some free time away from the family. Not impossible, but would definitely be a challenge. If we want to try to plan on something, it is worth mentioning once in a while to see if at some point there is interest.

Speaking of that... Chris and I were chatting the other day, and he sparked an idea for a PFS scenario (if I were to ever write one) that I had. Perhaps if I ever write it out, and we can game over roll20, I can use this group to playtest it for me...

Sounds like fun! I love playtesting friends' work.

Well, I'm up for PFS on Google+ theoretically at any time, with enough notice. Just let me know. ;-)

Male Level 1 Human Commoner

I'm down for a google hangout/roll20 game, this is how I join in my weekly "face-to-face" game with PapaSteve anyway. Let's figure it out what works for everyone and set it up. I have no idea what my schedule is, but I assume my schedule might be a little more accommodating than most everyone else's, since I don't have kids.

Ayep. But I'm grumbling @ Sweetman's response.

I'm trying to find the words to politely disagree with all the things I disagree with. I only wonder if I will find them.

Well! Painlord, perhaps we will find a chance for you to p,ay at one of our scenarios, or maybe you'll want to GM the crazy bunch that we are. If you are going to be at GenCon, we could use a player or two to cover those of us that cannot make it (we are planning a face-to-face game there)!

That's funny because I had already asked Wilmann if any of you yahoos was going to go to PaizoCon. ;)

I don't know that I'll make GenCon (mostly because I need to find the right accommodations), but it's possible. (This old, cranky yahoo needs an extremely local hotel room and his own bed.)

And Silbeg, you run in Minn, eh? With the my Ryan boys? Boulduan and Blomquist, and maybe even Koelmann? Oh yeah, I know Dehning too.

And verdigris just posted our response to Sweetman.

Thanks guys. Almost had a flame war going on. I'll get some head space and respond today.

As for liking my own work, Painlord, I agree it is on the nose and I was reluctant - but I was just taking advantage of the favorites system because they act like bookmarks. Is there a better way?

I always find it odd when someone puts out a guide with options and if there is one option someone doesn't like, they have to point it out. Weird part of our modern culture.

Chris will have to go to Paizocon when he wins RPGSS. Look for his item in the top 32 reveal today...

I would like to go to Paizocon someday, but it is definitely not in the cards this year, or probably next year. The twist that makes it difficult for me is my wife does not like gaming.... pretty much at all. She rolls her eyes that I even play. So a trip like that would only be feasible if I included the whole family, and we found lots of family things to do, while I occasionally sneak off to the convention. Which truthfully, still sounds amazing, and I would totally do it. The next step is convincing her that a vacation to Seattle during a time that is close to spring break is better than Florida... Improbable, not Impossible :)

Hardy har har, that's pretty darn funny. I wish I had your confidence. I appreciate the kind words though.

I would love to go to PaizoCon, but I'm sure it will have to be on my own dime, as an avid fanboy. One of these years I hope to go, but i doubt it would be this year. Getting out to that neck of the woods would take some real, actual planning.

How about GenCon, is everyone who was thinking of going to GenCon still on board?

Liberty's Edge

Good job, Damien!
A flame war means that it's a topic of great interest!

I was looking at flight prices the other day, you know.. just for fun.. It's possible to get to US east coast pretty cheap, but I think the Con places are a bit further... Mmm... U.S. road trip plus a Con, that'd be a vacation :)

I certainly do! Also, Andy Christian, Ray Albrecht, etc...

Been active in the local PFS for about 2 years now (wow... only 2 years? that'll mean 100 table credits in 2 years...)

I've learned a lot from that crowd! Great bunch of guys - always a joy to play with and GM for!

Damn... you make me want to push to see if I could go to Paizo con now. :)

Gen con is in Indy, which is mid-west... Just south of Michigan where Chris and I are. Likely only one extra jump from an east coast international airport.... Who knows how much more they will charge for that though...

I am about 90% sure I will make it to gen con this year, definitely looking forward to a live table with this group. Still need to book my hotel room.... :)

So, I just brought this up with Damien, but if you all are interested, I would be willing to run Bonekeep 1 (and 2 when it becomes a 4-star exclusive) for you all. I can't run it until I have 4 stars (which should happen in a month), but I'd like to, if you are all willing to take a challenge!

The are VERY tough scenarios, but I am sure that you all would be up for it! I had a lot of fun playing my Conjurer, Angelo, through the first two, and am looking forward to part 3!

I think we'd want your characters to be at level 4 for the 3-4 sub-tier (or we'd wait for then to be at level 7, and do it at 6-7).

Who is interested?

Painlord and others who may want somewhere to stay...

Conrad Hotel

I've got a King bed room booked here (free cancellation! woo!). Anyway, I've asked for a rollaway also (8 months' notice should be enough time to secure one!). If anyone wants in, we could probably share the king or alternate on the rollaway.

It's $400 /night (incl. taxes), but after staying at La Quinta last year for $210 / night (incl. taxes), I am so through with sh*tty accommodation.

Anyway, the only caveat would be if my Australian friend changes his mind and heads to GenCon with me this year, he would share the King bed with me... but that still leaves the rollaway. :-)

Bonkeep sounds awesome. My preference is for the Thornkeep group to do it at level 4, since we've kinda got a PFS plan already for the other characters (and that's the group I regularly GM). We seem to be doing pretty well in the dungeon, even without any knowledge (arcana). :-)

As for GenCon, still having that discussion, regardless of the outcome, the best I could do is Thursday/Friday. It is only a 4ish hour drive for me, if I do go hoping to crash on someone floor and throwing some cash your way. I am quite Spartan when traveling and have excellent grooming habits.

I always vote for as many games as I can - so whatever the group wants. I still need to make a few extra characters.

Flame war? Oh no, we just had some interesting discussion. ;) I like that GMs will have some discussion and ideas and can make up their own minds and try things that work for them.

I was just snarking about the liking of your own post. I don't have a better way, save to link them in my profile, but I mostly do that so others can find them.

Hey, John, you'd be more than welcome to crash in my room. Just getting the hotel to confirm on that rollaway! ;-)

Painlord, I've just added it to a wish list - not a bad mechanism. I'll link from my profile soon, too. I like that idea most... and since I use it for my GM Damo alias, I don't know why I didn't do it earlier, really!

Ah yes! I think I've met AC more than once. Even bought him a beer once. I can't believe I forgot to mention him.

If you can, you *should* come to PaizoCon. It's dang fun as long as you don't get roped into running the entire time you're there (unless you *really* like running). Gotta find time to play and chat and socialize too.

Dark Archive

Human (Minnesotan) Rules Lawyer 4, GM 5!

We'll see. Jon Dehning is trying to get me to go, but I am expecting that while I'll get a pass to go to one summer convention, two would be too much for my wife.

If you make it to GenCon, though, I promise to share some Maple Bacon Bourbon with you!

Last year at GenCon, I was signed up for 8 slots (only 7 actually happened), and played both specials with tables that I organized. I got plenty of socializing time, though perhaps playing more would be nice. Of course, I am planning on doing it again.

As for Paizo Con, it would depend on how the tiers break down, and what they are offering. GenCon being a tier 1-2 GM got you a room... which is pretty sweet.

I've known Andy for years... through Con of the North. I used to run a Champions game there that he usually participated in. Then, I met him, again, at my second ever session of PFS (almost exactly 2 years ago)! He's a great guy (regardless of what his online persona can be like).

Damien Wilmann wrote:

That is very kind of you - I won't know anything until much later. How many sessions could I even get into on Thursday and Friday? I would probably miss the special events which stinks.

So if we decide to all make toons together for tertiary characters to apply the we be goblins sheet to, I've finally decided what I will make. I would still rather not create another character, but that is pretty much because I know if I do, my halfling cavalier won't see much action at all anymore...

Just wanted to say, whatever we decide, I am down. And excited. Cuz how could you not be? This group is awesome.

You could always switch to the cavalier when the new toon catches up on XP. What's the new idea?

Dark Archive

Human (Minnesotan) Rules Lawyer 4, GM 5!

Oh, on the XP thing... with Gunari...

I am thinking of sitting him out an adventure or two (if we aren't doing the 3-parter right away)... will bring in Trask to cover for him. Want you all to catch up to Gunari, I think.

Was the plan to start 6-09 By Way of Bloodcove next?

Sure thing. Bloodcove is indeed next. Ready to go when we finish Paths!

Dark Archive

Human (Minnesotan) Rules Lawyer 4, GM 5!

Cool. Will probably play this with Trask... Unless you guys want a "heavier hitter" for a scenario. Ok, she is halfling...with an 8 strength, I think. But her giant scorpion, Lord Snappy is a beast! Ok, vermin.

She is a level 5 druid.... Just throwing it out as an option, in case everyone is level 3 still.

I could really make a few people here uncomfortable... Maybe Dierdre would gain a love interest ;)

Miro? Cyrus?

Heck , maybe a certain eidolon and a Scorpion would hit it off.

Its devious... and fun....

Barbarian-Alchemist. 1st level Barb, then nothing but alchemist after that. Statted properly, with full buffs, I can get up to a 30 strength at level 3 (18 + 4 for rage + 6 for feral mutagen with rage chemist archetype + 2 with enlarge person extract)

Then at level 4, I can use a bull's strength extract, getting me up to a 34 strength.

granted... My AC is that of the broad side of a barn... but when I hit, things die...

I can't help but cackle maniacally everytime I think about the build...

Maybe I can get Sheeba and Deirdre to fight over me... I would have to dust off some of my old "awkward around women" posts...

To get the true flavor of that little beauty, you need to scroll a bit up to here.

Male Human Engineer/4 (ding!)

Yay for flooding the boards with posts!

Random thought about bloodcove. Don't spoil it if you can't. Rumor has it that is where much of the Apsis consortium (probably botched that spelling) holes up. There is a big part of me that is really hoping to come across them sometime. Its all over in the field guide that they are kind of the pathfinder society enemies... would be really fun to have a scenario that deals with that.

Looking forward to.... everything!
